Also - gonna add antibiotic stewardship program, critical care involvement, thoughts on COVID and treatments.

I start with BIDMC on Tuesday. I feel like a lot of my questions are going to revolve around work-life balance, the clinical experience (good variety, reasonable numbers, diverse patients), research protected time and funding, program priorities, global health opportunities. I interviewed for research pathway programs several years ago and I found that a lot of institutions have these instructor positions to allow time to apply for extramural funding. In that role you are an attending physician but not full faculty and they give a lot of protected research time for a couple of years. So I will ask a bit about those options.

Also, I am Med/Peds and several of my interviews will be for a combined 4-year program with Peds so will ask questions about how they integrate the programs.
 
These are all great questions; Thanks for sharing. Will you specifically ask about call schedule and number of consults per rotation? Is this question better to ask fellows or faculty? Also, from previous years forums team structure seems important- i.e easier if there are medical students/residents in the team as well. For programs that offer MPH/MSc in the third year, I would ask to talk to fellows who are doing it to get better feeling how manageable it is. Update on virtual interview process.

While obviously missing the personal element of being able to walk the halls and get an unfiltered image of the program and fellows, I found the interview to be informative, tech ran smoothly on both ends and structure was comparable to an in-person interview given the circumstances.

Depending on the program and their interview structure it will be a long day sitting in a chair so definitely prepare yourself for that. This particular interview was 6 hours, I had a short break for lunch and 5/10 minutes between each faculty interview/session to prep, go to the bathroom, stretch etc. Each faculty/fellow interview was about 30 minutes, no left field questions, very straight forward and they had obviously reviewed my application throughly and came prepared with questions specific to my CV, research/publications and future career path which really helped conversation flow and left little room for awkward silence. I also made sure I was prepared with relevant questions for each interviewer based on their background/research. Candidates were invited to participate in noon conference, which I did. I decided to engage and answer some of the questions asked, the PD noticed and mentioned it in my one on one, they seemed impressed with this so I would suggest if you feel comfortable and have the opportunity to do the same. The interview ended with all of the days candidates in a final quick wrap-up/Q&A so that gave me an opportunity to see how many others interviewed with me and from there, get an estimate of how many they were interviewing for the program overall.

Glad to have broken the ice and have this first one out of the way. Next for me is BIDMC on 9/8. Good luck to everyone with interviews coming up!

Has anyone has heard from Tufts, Cleveland Clinic or Brown? Looks as though invites have really slowed down this week.
 
I was confused why I didn't get an interview from Westchester given I live 10 minutes away. I didn't apply. My subconscious told me to gtfo of NY.

I am wondering if the programs which usually send out like multiple waves of IVs, wait till they’ve IVed a group to see if there is enough applicants they like that they can rank based on # positions and then decide how many more to send out etc...‍♀ just curious lol
 
Just declined an interview with SUNY Downstate - hope one of y'all gets it soon!
 
Interview at Stony Brook was great. Well organized and there was only a couple hiccups in the beginning. But overall I had a good time talking with the faculty. Fair questions.
Why ID
Future in ID - outpatient, hospital, research, etc
Interest in research - what type
Questions about the program (mainly what I've talked about regarding involvement in critical care, antibiotic stewardships, exposure to other areas of ID I don't get here - burn units, immunocompromised/transplant patients.

I heard from LAC-USC on 8/14.

Any utility in sending emails to programs that we haven't heard from yet? I figured there's nothing to lose, but don't want to seem annoying.

At this point? Sending an email expressing your interest in the program won't hurt. Worst case: they'll let you know they're still reviewing apps. Just don't deliberately demand an interview (not that you would). Just a simple follow up.

Not so much malignant, but I heard NYUs ID department isnt too great. Attendings there aren't too happy, can't say about being fellows there. But let me know if others have heard the same thing.

I'm gonna wait until later this week. I've had two but want to wait until the interviews this week.


And this is nothing about bad mouthing or anything. I just think 2 interviews is too premature to give impressions. So far, it's been good.

Also, anyone have an idea of how many IV to go on in order to ensure a match? I'm not sure if applicants will go on more interviews due to the ease of interviewing over zoom, also unsure if programs are offering more interviews this year or not. I heard one applicant ask that during an interview but so far I haven't had the guts to

I don't think that anyone will be able to give you an actual answer here. Based on the 2018 Charting Outcomes data, it looks like lines converge on 1.0 at around 15 interviews (depending on your status).

The problem is that this year is going to be really unpredictable. Thanks to COVID, there may be a significant increase in overall interest in ID. I have also heard that many hospitals have had to implement hiring freezes due to loss of income during the pandemic - this will probably shunt people who are current hospitalists (or would otherwise become hospitalists) to pursue fellowships. I would review the NRMP Charting Outcomes data here and discuss with your home PD. They will probably be able to give you the best sense of how many interviews you need.
