USMLE Official 2020 Step 1 Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got my USMLE and COMLEX in 2 weeks. I swear I have ZERO motivation to do OMM. I got a 593 on 102B and I'm like "I can live with that."

I don't know. Is anyone actually brushing up?

I am brushing up on it pretty hardcore for two reasons: 1) I am bad at it, and I refuse to let Osteopathic voodoo tank my score 2) It could be easy points come test day, and therefore, worth the investment.

That's a good point. I could probably do to just go over cranial and sacral nonsense. I've been of the mind that if I study anything else its going to get me a better USMLE score too. But I still don't have a sense of how much is actually on there.

Honestly the only subjects I have hit hard in OMM are cranial, viscero, the spine, sacral, and chapman's points. Cranial and sacral are high yield and chapman's points are free money.

Not testing till June/July. Crazy how every single post today on reddit was a 260+. Where did all these people come from?

The top 10% man. **** is kinda discouraging. I’m happy with my 230 on NBME 23 and I see “265 on nbme 23” but I guess that’s just how the curve works.

Lol there seems to be more 'you-know-what' measuring contests going on in reddit forums than here, thats why I roll with my crew here instead

Haha yea honestly this is a great group. No one is trying to one up each other, everyone is super supportive and happy when another succeeds, and everyday we cry together.

I wrote down the names of the bugs in one of the questions because I legit had no idea what 3/5 of them were.

Balantidium coli, torulopsis glabrata, trichomonas hominis. Um, what??
Stop making up words please, I already have to memorize enough of them

I'm a bit curious though. Has anyone else been using AMBOSS? Got it after I finished UWorld for this last week.

I was doing like 70 in UWorld and this thing is kicking my ass with like 55% and I swear most of the questions are so convoluted it's still putting me in a pretty high percentile. Wondering how good of a prep tool it really is. Most of this **** isn't in FA or Pathoma.

i think alot of the stuff is in FA cuz ive done it too. just random factoids from the text tbh

Lots of people here seem to like it, but I found their question bank to be on par with Kaplan’s, so full of useless low-yield minutiae.

I started using it at the beginning of the semester, and I stopped without even using 1/3 of it. I was getting 30-50% correct per block. It was too depressing for me. It teaches you to overthink stuff. Things have been much better with Uworld. When I finish Uworld, I might go back and check the 1-2 hammer questions out (3-4 hammer ones are ridiculous).

AMBOSS actually hurt me I think, I tried like... this free trial promo thing they ran and I wound up over thinking every question I did from other question banks for like the next two days after.

Also, I don’t think 230 scorers are racing to reddit to brag about their score. Super respectable performance, but you’re going to get a very targeted population when looking at reddit threads.

I agree. I understand why students may be shy about posting their score, especially when people around them are getting 250+ and acting upset about it (saw like 3 posts similar to this on reddit today...). However, if more students DID report scores around 230 or whatever, imagine how good the data will be for the "reddit score predictor" excel sheet. Also, I have yet to see someone be mocked for reporting their score of 230/220 etc, which is nice.

Amboss is notoriously really really difficult. I heard if you do the 1-3 hammer questions theyre actually pretty good. 5 hammer is a waste of time theyre way too hard and not representative of the real exam lol

Just thought I’d wander in.

I got divorced last summer between OMS-1 and OMS-2 (he found someone else, cheated, and left me for her) and it was so soul-destroying that in hindsight, I should have taken a leave of absence for a year. I feel like I learned absolutely nothing - I pumped and dumped for literally every single test during OMS-2, and I played a lot of video games. Good news is I have a bunch of new trophies on the PS4... bad news is literally nobody but me cares about my PS4 trophies.

Finally realized how far behind I was when I took NBME 13 on 4/3 and scored a 400/207. I’ve pulled it up some since then - 5/16 took NBME 15 and scored a 510/230, but I know I’m still not rock solid yet. Might have just been a lucky test.

I take another NBME on Saturday (starting the new ones now) so we’ll see how that goes.

I’m doing DIT so I can at least learn the high yields, with as much uworld as I can fit in (some days none), but I’m putting DIT first because I literally have major content knowledge gaps and at least it’s relatively comprehensive. Hoping to finish DIT at least a week before my tests but we’ll see how it goes.

Anyone else here doing DIT? I really love it, honestly.

Strong work! 230 on any NBME is really good and thats a nice climb from 207. PS4 trophies are dope btw

I’m attributing that 23 point jump entirely to DIT. I was 12 days in by then, which isn’t a lot, but they cover a lot of basic embryology, teratology, pharm, etc pretty close to the beginning of the course. Since I was weak on that stuff, the improvement was immediate.

I miss gaming a lot now that I’ve gotten serious about studying. I think the first thing I’m going to do when I finish step and comlex is turn the PS4 back on, grab some beer, and replay some of my favorites.

"Teaches you to overthink" seems like a good way to put it. By comparison NBMEs seem so much more knowledge based. Like I'm expecting these huge stems and it comes down to some really basic presentation. 'Do you know this very classic presentation or not'.

Meanwhile AMBOSS seems to really try to trick you in very deliberate ways. Its to the point its frustrating to do them.

haha sounds like kaplan. The questions they ask sometimes are absurd and frankly annoying af. I still end up doing them so i should stop complaining lmaoo

When only like 25% of people get so a huge chunk of their questions right, and how many from guessing at that, you have to wonder if the concepts its teaching are really high yield. Like I don't think anyone thinks UWorld is easy but most of what's on there 50%+ of respondents get correct.

262 on UW test 1, how much does this thing over predict by, because I have yet to even get in the 220s on the 2 NBMEs ive taken
It's hard to tell because people take it at different points of their studying. Some people take it as a baseline and then it's supposed to be more in line with where you'll be by the time you sit for the test from what I've heard? I've heard it can overpredict anywhere from 10-15, some people say by 20. Who knows. Either way that's a solid score.

I took it 4 weeks out, and it over predicted by 8 for me. I think some of the over/under predicted hype gets exaggerated for several of these. Congrats!

id say 15 points absolute max. youre def in 240s. my friend got a 266 on UW1 close to her exam and got a 253 real deal. Overpredicted or not a 260+ on anything is damn baller score bro

Yes AMBOSS is insane. I did like 1/4 on 3-5 hammer only before starting Uworld and I thought I was gonna fail step my average was in the low 50s. I will say I think it’s great for getting you to Decipher between conditions that can present similarly and picking up little details.

Thanks guys. Its weird how you can feel like you aren't doing good during it and end up doing well. Somebody remind me of this after I take the real thing

How do you guys feel about the new UWorld questions? Some of them seem absurdly vague.
They're rough lol. Some of them are fine but some are extremely vague like you say, to the point where I almost have no idea what they're trying to go for. Answers are typically all over the place for those ones though, like 30% picked one and 20% picked another etc so I don't feel too bad?

I’m getting all the 100% ones recently haha

Also, UWorld's "randomization" is totally not random lol. I always get several questions on the same few topics which is kind of annoying, I wish it was truly random. I guess they're trying to drive home a point?

Sometimes this happens to me and I dont even notice lol. One block wayyyy back in the day, like early march, I got 3 questions wrong and they were all about PCOS, but I never even considered PCOS when answering them.

Funny thing now is that its super easy for me to sniff out a PCOS question.

lol imagine going into the exam with scores like that. Knowing that your baseline score was already over 60th percentile, pre uworld. Jesus

Yeah, he's one of the few elite test takers that don't even need to finish UWorld and can still destroy step. It's crazy

My 95% CI is 225-265 , this spreadsheet predictor is like 'bro Idk what the hell youre going to do on this test'

Too real. My confidence interval is like 30 points. I’m taking four more practice tests before the real thing; hopefully it narrows some. Or there’s gonna be a lot of nightmares.
