*****official acceptance thread for the university of maryland*****

wait has anyone else heard that the atrium is ghetto?? The website makes it look really nice...

The atrium, seriously? 🙄 It's funny that of all the areas of the school, you would be concerned about the atrium, but no, it's not ghetto at all. The whole building is only a couple of years old, and was designed by the same architect that built Bill Gates' house. There is nothing ghetto about the dental school. (Baltimore is another story)

Yea I thought it sounded kind of weird that someone mentioned that in an earlier post. I'm glad to hear its reasonable though because I need to find somewhere to live!

*sidenote* I'm excited to meet all my future classmates 🙂 I think we made a great choice

I'M IN AS WELL!!! Now, all we need is snaggle... COME ON GUY!

wow, i haven't looked at this thread in a while, for those of you rooting for me 😍 i received the secondary about a week ago. now awaiting an interview invite!!! :xf: 🙂

Whats going on? I submitted my secondary as well, but no interview information at all.

Congrats everyone!!
I have a very random question, and I figured by asking you guys that you all could give an unbias opinion. 🙂
I am from a state that doesn't have a dental school, and I got accepted as an outstate dental student to UMKC, LSU, and Tennessee. I am having trouble deciding between them. How would you guys rank these schools? Which ones would you go to,and why?
I have talked to several people and at 3 schools, but, of course, there is a bias towards their school. I would really appreciate any input you guys could give me. Congrats on your acceptance! 🙂

An actual yearly budget for Maryland would be extremely helpful in my decision. From what I can find, only a list of general fees and such are provided on the website, plus the handout from the financial aid presentation just provides a "sample budget" for a year. So here's my question: Can we out-of-staters reasonably assume to incur the ~$90k per year cost of attendance each year? If so...I don't have to tell you that attending UMB from somewhere other than Maryland would be an extremely costly venture. 🙁

I'm pretty sure they were referring to the Atrium apartments (http://www.atriumapts.net/) NOT the atrium of the dental school 😳

Hup

Does anyone know when the second batch of acceptances go out???

I'm in!! I had the interview on Wednesday and heard back today..I absolutely loved the school. For those who have already received the official acceptance letter in the mail, how much is the deposit?

Congrats Bipster! When you interviewed did they give you any indication how long it would take to decide? Also are you instate or oos? Interviewing there this week.

Umm well they said we could hear back either in January, February or at the latest March or something? For me it took less than five days which was awesome. The interview was not bad at all just look over the interview feedback on sdn, pretty much all of my questions were directly off of it. I am out of state. Good luck on your interview! I'm sure you will nail it.

Hey Bipster10. Congrats! we interviewed on the same day, and I'm in too! YAY! I didn't get the packet yet, but I read on the website that the deposit is $750 and another $1000 is due in April.

congrats guys! can i ask how you guys found out?

Just got in too! Email yesterday afternoon. Out-of-state (sad) but still strongly leaning this way.

Got the email this week! Out-of-state but definitely accepting the offer. I've seen some discussion about apartments etc., anyone have any more suggestions? See you all in a few months!

Congrats to all of you guys who have recently been accepted!!!

Orientation is August 1st (or sometime during the first week of aug) if I'm not mistaken. I was wondering when you guys were planning on moving downtown? My wife and I are planning to visit some towers downtown this May in hopes of finding something reasonably priced and walking distance to the school.

For current dental students at UMD, do you guys have a rough idea as to how much the rent usually runs? I did a little bit of research and found one-bedroom apts anywhere between $1100-$2000 ... is it cheaper to go through student housing? ... and if so, do they allow someone who is not a student to reside in those buildings (ie. a wife)?

Thanks guys

Congratz to everyone who got in 😀
I'm still a freshmen in undergrad so hopefully i'll be class of 2018 haha 😀
Anyway, i'm posting here because i'm a maryland resident and this school is absolutly my first choice. I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing with me how they did in undergrad so that I know what i have to achieve in order to get accepted to this school in the future. Thank you 🙂

PS: A reply here or PM would be fine, just as long as I get help from someone and once again sorry for hijacking this thread!

go to predents.com and you can see the stats of a lot of the people accepted this year, and past years.

Hey!! Im new to SDN but I will be attending UMB in the fall but I havent paid my 1000 deposit yet!! It was between here and ECU for me. Im sooooo excited!!!!!😀

Does anyone know if the committee is sending out any decisions this week? I thought they said at my interview that after Feb. 1 they would be making decisions every 2 weeks. Just wanted to see if anyone had any more information on the subject.

Does anyone mind sharing their interview experience at MD? Was it formal? Laid back? etc

So I received my acceptance on the 1st of February but I think I might be passing it up for Penn at this point. So perhaps this will free up on OOS spot.......

Hey Killa, just wondering what your reasoning for picking penn over MD?

Are you instate for Maryland? I see that you put Bethesda. I am in the same predicament and do not know whether to choose Maryland (in-state) over Penn. Many would say Maryland because it's cheaper but I really like Penn. What is your rationale for your decision?

I'm actually not in-state but might be able to get it, even though I have been told it is very difficult to do.

I decided to go with Penn rather than Maryland because:

1.) Stronger academic curriculum: they are very medically-oriented even though we will not take classes with the med students.

2.) Specialization: They take Part 1 boards after 2nd year as opposed to 1st year in Maryland. Also, because I am heavily leaning towards specializing I know that they do a fantastic job of putting people in a great position to do so.

3.) Selectives Program: I thought this was very unique and can be useful for learning about unique aspects of dentistry that we could not get elsewhere.

4.) I liked Philly a little more than Baltimore. B-more wasn't as bad as some report, but I liked how Penn was on the undergrad campus, a big cool historic place that I never got to experience in Idaho.

5.) Clinic: I know Maryland are very good at this too but I liked how I will become a dental assistant in my first year at Penn. This will allow for great exposure to the "real" aspects of clinical dentistry as I will be helping out with patients and allow me to learn things from the older students. Maryland has better facilities though......

6.) Required externships: the 4-week long externships will make me go to places that i might be interested in specializing. This will undoubtedly only help expand my experiences in whatever specializing field I decide to go into.

I have lots more but it really didn't take me long to weigh out that Penn would push me beyond what I might get at Maryland. Again, this is all from my perspective and my limited experiences at the interviews.

You have required externships at maryland as well, just to let you know.

yes you do have them at maryland. You have one your D1 year and your D4 year either locally, nationally, or internationally.

Anybody know how full the 2015 class is for Maryland? I interviewed last week, but got the impression the class was pretty much full.

Anybody's 1st or 2nd deposit due this past week or in the next few weeks?

Anybody know how full the 2015 class is for Maryland? I interviewed last week, but got the impression the class was pretty much full.

I called the admissions office a little while ago and asked if they could tell me how full the class was.

No such luck, all they could say was that I am still "under consideration" (with an unknown number of other people for an unknown number of remaining seats).

It's so frustrating, but I understand that schools need to take some discretion in disclosing admissions information.

I don't get it. Every other school will disclose that information. That makes me think the class is full.

Based on previous years, the class is usually filled by the end of February and they send out waitlist letters typically during the first week of March. I would imagine the time frame to be rather similar to previous years. In regards to the waitlist at Maryland, I've heard some years only a few people made it into the class whereas other years saw a lot more movement. This is obviously pretty difficult to predict... wish you the best of luck!

They do not know how many people that have been accepted are actually going to the school. There is a $1000 deposit due April first, and I remember at my interview, they told me that there will be more acceptances after April, because some people don't pay the second deposit.

does anybody know if there is a facebook group for this class?? I looked but i can not find it.

I just withdrew my acceptance from UMB, hopefully that frees up a spot for one of you hopefuls 👍

Does anyone know if most of the textbooks are electronic? Or hard copy?

So, I got an offer of acceptance today from Maryland. I've already been accepted to Michigan. so, why should I pick Maryland over Michigan?

I'd say go where ever it's cheaper for you. If you're out of state for both, go to where you felt more comfortable on your visits. I've never been to the Mich campus, but I loved the Maryland campus. I really like the faculty I met at Maryland. I liked that we have to do the externships at Maryland. I liked that Baltimore is not too far from DC, Philly, and NYC. Maryland has an excellent reputation. And I thought that Maryland probably has excellent networking for after graduation.... Those are just some of the reasons I decided to go to Maryland over the school that I initially accepted with. Ultimately, you're going to be a dentist no matter where you go.

Has anyone received an email from Maryland yet? its almost 10:30, December 1st 2011, and still nothing I'm freaking out!!!

PS. did your status change on aadsas? Mine still says "Invited for interview"

AGAIN this is for 2011-2012 cycle........
