Disclaimer: I did not write this thread - it has been passed down through the eons by pre-allo staff.

It is that time of year again!
The AMCAS Application will be opening SOON! This is a place for all things AMCAS related so that we don't flood the first page. All threads created after this one will be merged into this thread. All previously created threads that are bumped will be re-directed here, and closed if bumped again.

Reminder: Each thread has a search function!! PLEASE use it!!.

Also, one of your first resources should be the source itself. Almost any basic question you have about AMCAS can be found by reading the AMCAS FAQ and the AMCAS instruction manual. Please try to find your answer before posting your question.

The AMCAS FAQ can be found here and the 2023 applicant guide can be found here.
This thread is brought to you by the Pre-Allopathic Volunteer Staff. Ask away, and good luck!!

AMCAS FAQ from 2012 through 2022; please let us know if there are any changes. Will be continuously updated as new information is brought to light.

General Submission/Big Picture Questions

1. When does AMCAS open? How soon can I submit?

The AMCAS application opens on May 3rd, 2022, and you can submit starting May 27th, 2022 @930am EST.

2. When can I start uploading my transcripts to AMCAS?
As soon as the application opens, on May 3rd.

3. How should I organize my information in the Work and Activities Section?
The Pre-Allo staff has created a new thread that compiles some of the best bits of information and contains a FAQ for the Work and Activities section. That thread can be found here. Please post questions regarding this section into that thread.

4. What about Letters of Rec?
Funny you should ask. There is a thread for that too.

5. What should I include in my personal statement?

Wouldn't you know....there is a thread for that too. Check out the Official Personal Statement Reader Thread for some great advice.

6. How is AMCAS different from prior years?
Within the activities section, hours should now clearly be separated between completed and expected. Explaination of New Traffic Rules

7. What is all of this about being a reapplicant?
AMCAS will only show you are a reapplicant to each of the individual schools you have applied to previously. No school at anytime during the AMCAS process can see if you have previously applied to any other school, nor can it see any other school your are currently applying to. No school except the individual school your are reapplying to can see any part of your previous AMCAS application, and only if they have kept it on file, which most schools do. AMCAS does not provide your previous application to any school, whether a reapplicant or not. Every MD school can see if you have been accepted previously at an MD school. While AMCAS guidelines do allow individual schools on their secondary applications to ask if you had ever previously applied to medical school, the question does not appear to be widely used. It is more common for individual schools to ask if you have ever been accepted previously matriculated at any medical school, which would include allopathic, osteopathic, or off-shore.

8. What parts of the AMCAS application can I change after submitting? If I change these things, will I have to wait longer?
You can add and assign LORs (Letters of Recommendation)

You can change your name, current address, and alternate names

You can add a future MCAT test date

Several other things that can be found here on the AMCAS official site.

No, you will not have to wait longer once you re-submit.

9. How long does it take to get verified after submitting?
It varies. Generally, the later you submit, the longer it takes. You can look at last year's verification times here.

10. When do secondaries come out?
This varies from school to school. If you are interested in a particular school, your best bet is to check out that school's specific thread in the "School Specific Discussions" forum.

11. What are some important dates that I should know?
May 3rd, 2022 -- AMCAS Application Opens
May 31st, 2022 -- First Day to Submit AMCAS
June 24th, 2022 -- First Day Applications are Transmitted to Medical Schools
October 15th, 2022 -- First Day Acceptance Offers Can Be Made
April 15th, 2023 -- AMCAS Suggests Narrowing Down to 3 Acceptances by This Date
April 30th, 2023 -- Date By Which Applicants Must Hold Only One Acceptance

Transcript/Coursework Questions

12. What about transcripts in general? Tell me everything!

Once the AMCAS application opens in May, you will be given an AMCAS ID number. You are also then able to add schools (and the dates you attended those schools) into AMCAS. When you do this, you will be able to print a transcript sheet that contains your AMCAS ID number on it for each school. When you go to order your transcripts, have your school include this sheet with the transcripts to be sent.

12a. I know this was asked in question 3 above....but do I really really really have to include every transcript?
Yes, you MUST include transcripts from all colleges you have ever attended. You cannot send the transcripts yourself (as in, getting a copy into your hands, and then sending it to AMCAS); they have to come from the school directly to be considered official.

12b. Do I have to include the AMCAS sheet when sending in my transcripts? What happens if I don't?
You should really include this sheet; giving AMCAS any chance to lose your transcripts is a bad idea. However, I can tell you from personal experience that one of the 8 transcripts I had to send was done online, and I was unable to include the sheet. I gave instructions for them to write my AMCAS ID on the envelope, and it got there fine. But again....making more work for AMCAS employees or giving them an excuse to lose your stuff is never a good idea.

13. What about in-progress courses or courses I know I am going to take over the summer? What about Pre-reqs I am taking over the summer?
There is a chance for you to list all future courses on the AMCAS application. No, you can not update these grades later in AMCAS, but you CAN update individual schools later with these grades. This is actually a perfect opportunity for you to send an Update Letter to schools telling them again how much you love them and telling them what you've been up to.

14. I took a class at a community college while I was in high school. Do I still need to report that transcript?
Yes. If you don't, you are risking being found out and having a school revoke an acceptance.

15. My spring grades don't come out until May/June/July/Whatever. Should I wait until I get them to submit my application?
If you decide you want to apply as early as possible, your spring grades would not be on your transcript. This is a judgement call. If your spring grades matter a LOT (they contain 3 prereqs, all As, and this is the first time you've taken a full load), wait until they come in before you send your transcripts in.
If not (they result in a minimal impact to your GPA, have only 1 prereq, and don't show anything special), go ahead and submit and plan to send updates to schools. Sending them some good grades is a good reason to contact them later if you've had a lot of silence from them. You are at a greater advantage being early than having more grades that will barely impact your GPA.

I would also suggest "rushing" transcripts whenever possible. The peace of mind is worth the extra money.

Also, keep in mind; you can submit without transcripts. The problem is that you will not be verified without them.

16. Does AMCAS begin verifying my coursework once they receive my transcripts?
No. AMCAS only verifies coursework once you submit your application. AMCAS will send you an email notifying you of the date they receive your transcript and the school that sent it, but that doesn't mean that your coursework is being verified.

17. Do I need to send in my transcript again, even if I sent it in last year?
Yes. See here AMCAS® FAQs

18. Will medical schools notice that a class included a lab?
In addition to selecting the "Combined Lecture and Lab" radio button, it is recommended that you add "and Lab" to the end of the course name. The 2020 AMCAS instruction manual says this:

2022-23 Applicant Guide

If you disagree with a change that AMCAS made, then submit an "Academic Change Request" form found on the Main Menu of your AMCAS application, but be prepared to back up your claim.

20. Help! What do I do with my AP classes?
Read through the AMCAS instruction manual, particularly page 32. For additional information on specific schools that accept AP credit, see this thread.

21. How do repeat courses average into the AMCAS application?
Both classes will need to be listed when you enter your information into AMCAS, and they will both be used when calculating your final GPA. If you want, you can this of this as "averaging" the grade, with the full amount of credit being equal to both classes together. Example: 3 units of C, class is retaken for 3 units of A. The final calculation would be 6 units of B.

22. Can I have my school send in a digital copy of my transcript? What email address do I send it to?
AMCAS has started accepting eTranscripts from some institutions that have registered with them. Consult your pre-health advisement office to see if this is available for your school. Your registrar will still need to send the eTranscript directly to AMCAS (AMCAS does not accept transcripts via email from applicants).

This FAQ is a work in progress. Please feel free to make suggestions in this thread or via PM for its contents; both questions and answers.

If you think something should be added to the FAQ, you see something that needs to be updated, or for any other concerns, tag @chilly_md , @PapaGuava , @gyngyn , @Lucca , or @Moko, or @wysdoc in one of your posts (or PM us!). If you do this, it's a HUGE HUGE HUGE help if you post the link to your source in your post!

Thanks and best of luck everyone!

I need help for GPA input in AMCAS.
My school is quarter system school and each course is 100 'our school' unit.
In our School website: Our school 100 unit = 3 1/3 semester hours = 5 quarter hours.

I think we don't need to do any conversion when we add courses and credits into the AMCAS for quarter grades. so, putting 100 for the credit section is right things to do, right?

Since data transmission begins June 24, and assuming my application will be marked as verified by June 24, does it matter if I submit my application on the first day submission opens (May 31) versus just a couple days after that date?

I have moved your question over to this AMCAS questions thread.

Take the time you need to review and finish your app.

I am currently reviewing my completed primary as the pdf printout. Under Identifying Information, my legal residence is inputted: CITY (R)(U), STATE. Does anyone know what the (R)(U) stands for? I did not input that.

I know the AAMC says to input all courses exactly as they are listed on your official transcript, but the title my university puts on our official transcript is VERY ambiguous. For example, the title of my biochemistry class is "Biochemistry: Pathways, Mechanisms, and Regulation" but my transcript says "PATH, MECH, & REGUL". For cases like this, is it okay to include more information when I input the class into AMCAS?

AMCAS looks up your address and marks it as a rural and/or medically underserved area when applicable.

Hi all! I have a quick question on listing schools…

I did co-term at my university, which is undergraduate and graduate combined program. Do I list them as just one school, and select ”graduate program”?

Similarly, I took one summer class somewhere else in freshmen year, and went back to that school to do post-bacc years after. Should I list them as one?\

I would really appreciate any tip on this! Thanks in advance!

I have merged your question into the main AMCAS questions thread.

A community college I attended sent in my transcript by mail on 5/17 however AMCAS still has not marked it as received. Based on the transcript processing timeline, as of 5/26 AMCAS is already marking mailed transcripts as received that were sent on 5/25. I have never had a problem with this CC sending my transcript to my undergrad institution but I'm worried that the addition of the cover sheet may have gotten it lost in the mail. Should I attempt to resend the transcript or am I paranoid and should wait it out a few more days?

The fact that they sent it by mail rather than electronically probably accounts for the difference. Give it another week, good luck :)

I just discovered on my official transcript it lists all my AP credits as a lump number, even though on my unofficial one it lists them out by class. I have AP English & AP Math credit (so I didn’t take those classes in college). My university told me not to worry since I’m given credit for them on the transcript, but I am now seeing that I do not, in fact, get credit for the specific classes. Am I screwed, or is there a way to show AMCAS I really did get English and Math credit? I needed both courses for my degree and wouldn’t have gotten it otherwise but I’m sure that doesn’t really matter to them. Let me know if there is any solution other than taking both classes online :(

Asking for a friend:

My employer wrote a nice LOR for me that has been uploaded on interfolio. Unfortunately, I have to leave the practice in a very short notice (1 week notice) because my family outside the country is facing a health issue and I need to go over there to be with them. The practice has said they feel very sorry but would prefer I stay for 4 more weeks until a new person is trained.

I'm worried that even though this issue is totally beyond my control, they are pissed off and might try to retract their LOR? (and in all honesty, I don't feel bad. It's a minimum wage scribe job and I'm sure as hell not prioritizing that over my family, especially my grandma who is suffering a lot). I'm flying out to India no matter what next week.

Is an employer able to remove a LOR after it's already been uploaded on interfolio?

No, I believe once they submit the letter to Interfolio on their end, it remains accessible to the applicant unless the applicant decides to delete it.

If we want to send an updated transcript on AMCAS (new grades) is it as simple as just requesting and sending a new one? The electronic sending via my school completes in about 15 minutes, so I don't think there is a time risk. But I was curious if I have to email them to delete the current received transcript or if the new one would just take precedent.

Yes, they are supposed to use the newest transcript based on what another user found. This occurs prior to verification being completed. So, ensure you order the transcript and that they have received it before you submit AMCAS. GPAs are not re-calculated afterwards.

I took dual enrollment classes 2017-2018 at X University, and graduated high school in 2018. When I started dual enrollment, I was awarded AP credit by X university which shows up on my transcript.

When I enter the AP coursework, I selected 2017-2018 as the academic year. AMCAS only allows me to choose “high school” as the year in school. Because of that, it doesn’t allow me to choose “AP” in special course types.

What should I do? The AP credit video says I should select “freshman” but AMCAS is not allowing me to do that since I selected 2017-2018 as the year. I considered listing 2018-2019, but that's inaccurate.
I have moved your post into this main AMCAS questions thread. Did you matriculate to the same school for undergrad or a different university? I suspect you may have to call them regarding this as it could be a software limitation. Double check your years and maybe try deleting and re-adding the dual enrollment school. They may ask you to list it just once under the school you plan to graduate from.

Help me I can't find my high school on AMCAS! What do I do? The application system won't let me proceed without finding my high school, which is in the U.S. so I was under the assumption that it would show up on their pre-registered list of schools. I put in every detail about the school correctly, but the name of the school is not on their list. Please help

You can manually add the information for this usually if your school is not listed.

I have another coursework question -- in high school, I took AP psychology through Northwestern's Center for Talent Development. I checked the transcript I received, and it clearly states that I got high school credit from "Northwestern CTD". I checked if I received a Northwestern University transcript, and I'm not even in the undergrad system. Normally I wouldn't even worry about this since it's clearly a high school, not college level, course -- however, I realized that one of my college transcripts states I attended Northwestern University. Not even sure how they got this info tbh, presumably from my high school.

Could this slow down my verification, since it's on one of my transcripts? I don't really know what I can do, since there's not even a transcript to submit + I don't want to list a clearly high school level course

The AMCAS guide suggests that you list credit under the institution that gave you the most credits:

Include AP credit courses only once (by selecting Advanced Placement as the Special Course Type), even though AP credit for the same subject may have been awarded by more than one institution. AP courses may be assigned under the institution awarding the most credit.

Take note, the AAMC will fix minor errors as long as there are only a few.

As for the Northwestern class, if you did not receive a grade and it was for high school credit, then it seems you do not need to include it. I do not have experience in these scenarios, however. Their site suggests you can order transcripts:

So we don't specify what the AP credit was used for and just put all the credit in one 'class'? In my transcript it is listed as "general testing credit" worth 2 courses that aren't specified. Per the AMCAS 2018 video (is this outdated?) I was told to list it as two separate entries titled "Testing Credit: [Calculus/etc.]."

Is it okay if we just leave AP credit off if we didn't use it for prereqs or to graduate, even if it's on my transcript? This is causing a huge headache haha
Further down, they describe it as:

If you choose to omit your AP courses, AMCAS staff will add the credits to your application as a lump credit (even though the courses may be listed individually on the transcripts on file). For example, the University of Southern California awarded nine credits for three AP exams. On the official transcript, the credit appears as nine credits for AP exams, with no indication of the subject of the individual exams. On your AMCAS application, enter each exam as an individual course and distribute the credits appropriately, but do not exceed the total amount of credits earned.

What are ID numbers? (School assigned ID? )
Is there a way to find out whether my school has an ID?

You would likely know if your school used one. It should be listed on your transcripts at any colleges you attended and would likely be on a student ID card they give at orientation.

So school ID would be the student ID?

AAMC ID is your lifetime number for MCAT, AMCAS, ERAS (?), and all things medical education through AAMC.
Oh my, I should edit my post. I was asking about the school ID (where I could find it) and other IDs they were talking about.
Sorry for the confusion.

Hi SDN, I had a quick question about course classification. I took general chemistry at a different university prior to starting school in the fall (Summer 2018) and the credits were transferred appropriately. I wanted to double check whether the general chemistry courses should be counted as "Fall 2018" (like AP credits, they are designated as Fall 2018 on my current school's transcript) or "Summer 2018" since that is when I took the courses. I also wanted to clarify that I should just list these courses once as "Freshman" status under the university I attended during Summer 2018, since the courses are on both my transcripts . Thank you!

The AMCAS applicant guide says to put AP credit under the institution where you earned the most credit, which would be my post bacc institution. How would I categorize this year in school? Freshman or post bacc?

I submitted my application at 2 pm on 05/31 and am still not verified. Sent all transcripts on 05/17 and they are marked as received. I keep seeing posts about people getting verified the next day after submission and this confuses me as to why I am still not verified. Anyone in the same boat?

There are many people who applied on the first day. Those who were verified the next day likely submitted within the first 30 minutes it was open.

Has anyone that took their Casper test on Thurs 5/19 this cycle received their quartile score?

I have not yet and I'm curious to know when it would be exactly (I saw from the FAQ that it's usually 3-4 weeks post-Casper).

Edit: For reference, I got my score back on Thurs 6/16 at 8am. (Third quartile!)

can you share how you studied and the materials you used for Casper?

Hi! There are some schools that I haven't pre-written secondaries for. Would it be beneficial to wait to send them my primary app (which is verified already) and delay sending it by like a week or so. That way I can submit my secondary as soon as they send it to me?

I accidentally un abbreviated a couple course names from my transcript (think adding a vowel where they dropped one for space reasons) and didn't realize I wasnt supposed to until after submitting. I think I'm just being paranoid but this shouldn't be a problem and they'll just correct it during verification right?

I see that adding a LOR on AMCAS requires you to resubmit your application. Does adding a LOR if your application has already been verified by AMCAS potentially delay it while they "review" your resubmission?

If so, even if it only delays like a day so, I might want to wait till they send out all the verified apps on 6/24 before I add any new LORs.

I have a question about how to classify coursework. If we took a writing intensive course from a different department, like music for example, should we classify that as english or fine arts? I know a year of english is required for medical school, so I wasn't sure if I classified these as something else if they would still count towards my year of english.

Hey everyone,

I'm about to submit my first secondary to CCOM, but this same question will apply to my MD schools too. I noticed that despite having submitted my application early and being verified weeks ago, the school's portal still shows my LORS and MCAT scores as 'not yet received.' I have a question:

Is there a point in submitting my secondary essays before this information has been received and acknowledged by my school, or will they not look at my application anyway until everything's in?

Thank you!!!

Yes go ahead and submit when you are ready - someone at the school has to upload or match your supporting materials to your app and then they’ll check it off

Do admissions committees look at the time (clock time) that you submitted your AMCAS application? I ended up checking mine over and over and submitting mine around 4:45 AM the day after the application opened :/

Thoughts on mentioning alcohol in the PS? by no means in the context of addiction/abuse. more related to a storyline of enjoying a cold drink?

I think it would be okay as long as it's not one of those "I was so drunk that..." stories. Could you tell the story without mention of what you were eating/drinking, or is it somehow integral to the story?

thanks for answering :) It is not integral per se. It is in relation to a family member (wine lover and connoisseur) that had to forego consumption after a health related incident due to the meds they were put on. It might be an extra detail but definitely was hard to accept for them!

Sounds interesting

Does anyone know if the "course type" field is visible to schools in transmitted applications? I have a few courses that I received an incomplete in before receiving a letter grade, and I want to know if I should be mentioning the reason for this in secondaries.

I was verified middle of June and transmitted to all my schools at the end of June--I wanted to add a school, how long does it take for this to take place? getting it reverified, sent out again, etc...? it doesn't resend to the schools that have already received my application, correct?

I have a question about entering transfer credits into the Coursework section of AMCAS. I already sent AMCAS an official transcript from the school I transferred from and entered those credits in under the school I transferred from, but do I also need to mention the transfer credits under the school I transferred to? If so, how would I go about entering them in?

You will enter them under the school where you took the courses, and don’t enter them a second time on school #2 even though you see it as a transfer credit on school 2’s transcript

I submitted my AMCAS application a few weeks ago and it's still processing. If I add more schools now and re-submit, will it delay my verification time?
