Hey gang, most of us are on here because our beloved country has ridiculously high admission standards with so few seats and schools . Lets console each other and state where you are from, which schools have you applied to, been interviewed at, been accepted to, or waitlisted/rejected.

I'll go first- hailing from the tdot I have been accepted to NYU and BU. I've been rejected from several schools so it looks like just the 2 acceptances. At this time, I have yet to decided which school to attend.

Sorta hailing from the T-dot... Accepted to a bunch of places, still picking between Michigan and Columbia, leaning towards the former. If you can believe it, I got rejected at Temple.

Congrats prez_al, those are excellent schools...you can't go wrong with choosing either of them.

Thanks... those were my dream schools and I never thought I'd get accepted into either one. Your schools aren't bad either, NYU is huge on technology and the asthetics clinic has some of the nicest washrooms I've ever done my business in, lol.

Sorta hailing from Vancouver. Didnt apply to many, got interviewed at Minnesota, waiting to hear from them. If no go, I guess I need to expand my applications next year.

I am not applying this cycle. But I just want to wish those Canadians who are in or still waiting a good luck!

Good luck Nomar, keep us posted on your progress.

i didn't apply to american schools this year bc i wasn't sure what my chances were as a canadian with a 3.5 gpa...(3.6 if they drop my worst year!)
do any of you have suggestions for american schools i should try for next year if ubc and uoft reject me?!

Too bad you didn't apply because getting into a US d-school is much easier than getting into a Canadian school simply by the admission standards, number of available seats, and number of schools. Drawback? Tuition.

If you do a search in this forum, you can find which schools accept Canadian students. Most private institutions will allow us to apply and I'd list them out for you but there are too many. Just to give you an idea, I applied to 15 d-schools in the US. The d-schools with the most amount of Canadians are Tufts, NYU, and BU.

Good luck with your application.

I guess it depends on your situation too. I would apply to most of the privates if you can and definitely some state schools because out of state tuition is still cheaper than many private institutions. I just hate how BU, BYU and Tufts seem like cash grabs because of their outrageous tuition.

thanks guys.

i wish i had applied too.

as for finances, the one i have the biggest shot at is ubc bc i'm from vancouver, and their tuition and fees are over 49,000! so i dont think the states could that much worse...or could it?! lol.

Yeah I heard UBC is expensive. The most expensive d-school in the US is NYU (90g CDN due to living expenses).

I'll be applying to a number of schools in the states in the 2008 cycle.

I wish predents would work in an option to state statistically where international (possibly even limit it to Canadian) applicants are being accepted. I know you can check the demographics of those who have been accepted but a good number of people just put "international" and some choose not to even list their residence (let alone stats!).

I am more interested in an update on Canadian school application process. Just a few days ago, UT finally confirmed it received my application.

Hi shane, adea.org has a .pdf (I'm too lazy to search for it on this forum) that lists for each school the number of students accepted from each state including those from Canada. I don't know if you have look at that yet.

I'll make sure to check that out. Thanks.

edit: So I found a .pdf file outlining the number of Canadians in each schools class (not sure if its the same one you were speaking of) and the numbers are a lot lower than I had expected. NYU and Case seems to be the best options.

Here is the file... getting in from Canada isn't so easy after all. (2/83 at UMich?!?!?! in 2002!!!!!)

hey guys,

im a canadian applicant and Im from Tdot as well!

good to see fellow canadians stealing US spots! ahhaah

anyways, so i applied VERY late....submited end of oct and schools received my full application like christmas.

So i just got rejected from Uconn (maybe cause theres only 40 spots and its geared towards in-state applications) and i just got an interview at Upenn. Im still waiting from 9 other US schools....

Anyone in the same boat as me......with the extremely late applications. I had no choice since I had to write the november dat.

Also, any canadians here have above 4.0 GPAs? how do US schools treat that since we have A+s and US dont?

hey mymouthsmells;

can you share your gpa and dat scores?

Thanks

My info:

From toronto; attend u of t

GPA 3.19; sGPA: 3.12; american dat: 21/22/17

applied to 18 schools......many rejections, not interviews

hopeful for: nyu, bu, tufts, and detroit mercy.

Hey everyone

I'm also a Canadian (from the Hamilton area). I interviewed at a few places and got into a couple of schools. I'll probably be going to the University of Pittsburgh.

Gsman, do you go to York University? Anyways, don't worry about your GPA scale (which is obviously different for various Canadian universities), AADSAS has their own scale whereby you just put in your percentage grade in each course. But I assume you did that since you've applied to several US schools. Don't worry, considering you have interviews after applying late in the game, things are looking good for you. Good luck on them interviews.

KHANSAHAAB, hope all is well. My GPA is a 3.6 with a Canadian DAT scores are in the low 20s. May I ask why you took the US DAT? The Canadian DAT is less rigorous IMO (no orgo and math, and US schools do not look at carving). Good luck to you and let us know of your progress.

anyways, im sure there are ppl with 4.0+ avgs and I havent seen anyone with that and was wondering where all those people are.

Mind sharing you stats?

Hi Everyone!

I didnt know there were so many of us on these forums 🙂. Congratulations to everyone who got in!!!

I'm from Toronto in my final year of a BSc at U of T. Overall GPA 3.52 with American DAT scores AA22 and PAT19. I applied to 7 schools - and so far Ive only gotten one rejection and have not heard ANYthing from the rest. My application was completed by mid-October, so it was a bit late. Thoughts?

By the way - when doing the US DAT, it might be best to let the schools know separately that you are a cdn. applicant who did the US DAT - I got a letter from detroit mercy in december telling me to retake the DAT because I didnt have the minimum scores...turned out they had put down a 0 for carving. Ended up having my application on hold for a whole month until they cleared that up - grrrr.

Canadian from the West here.. Got into BU.

ps.. definitely should send in AADSAS app as soon as you can complete it in the summer.

Hey i'm almost in the same boat as you! Accept I've been in California for a year now finishing off my BSc at UC school, I went to UfT for 3 years prior.
I applied to the 6 Californian schools and UNLV, my app was completed late October too. Hearing from Upenn is a positive sign for you! I haven't heard from any of the schools and got denied by UNLV yesterday (even though i'm considerably above their averages! 😡)
I'm not sure how dental schools are looking at me, the private schools tell me they consider me a Canadian applicant, while the state schools are considering me out of state.
If there's one thing every predent should know is to never apply late! 🙁 But maybe with really really really killer stats..just maybe!

o n PS... I take responsibility for the lack of snow in the GTA in mid-Jan!😀 Brought the cali sun back with me for winter break 😎

ya, u dingus!

I spent 170$ at blue mountain and got 0 snowboarding done cause there was NO SNOW.

Meeeheeheehee :meanie:

Newhos, got updates on my status at all the schools I applied to. If you've applied (considerably late, post augustish) to Cali schools you're going be hearing nothing but crickets till the end of February *maybe*.. waiting sucks .. I'm going to go built a "sand" fort and have a "sand" ball fight out here in the "desert"

..but most of you others have only applied near the east coast i assume?

what is the latest date that dental schools offer interviews?

i've heard of interviews going until march/maybe april

Hey everyone,
I'm from Ottawa...I haven't applied to any d schools yet. I'm in my third year at the University of Ottawa and I was having some trouble calculating my GPA. My school doesn't go by semester hours they go by credits and i'm so confused on how to calculate my overall average...oh and another question for you guys is: i started off in chemical engineering (and did horrible..totally hated it) then I switched programs...do you think they will count my first year..or does anyone know how that works?

i don't know about calculating your gpa but they will count every course you've ever taken in the calculation

that really sucks...any ideas where or who I can ask about converting my credits to semester hours? Another crappy thing is that my Uni recently changed all my 4 credit classes to 3 for all the first year students...I don't know if that will affect my credits as well????

ask someone in the undergrad office to help you calculate your gpa. and no, the change won't affect you...hopefully that's a good thing 🙄

Hi all, I'm a recent UofT grad and i'm trying to head down south for my dental education! So far I've only been interviwed at BU and am anxiously waiting to hear back from them or any other school for that matter. I have a question for those Canadians that got in to an american school, are you planning on going back to Canada to practice? Is it hard to get a license in Canada after graduating in the states?
Thanks

depends what kinda dentist u r...i've heard that's you're pretty much a shoe-in as a gen dent going back to canada in terms of the licensing test but i think other specialties (i.e. ortho) may be harder. but no, i don't plan on going back to canada unless they socialize health care in the states

I actually talked to my dentists about that and he said it was hell coming back to canada to practice, they made him take 2 or 3 exams and just delayed everything and gave him a hard time! Supposedly if america trains you they want to keep you. But that was a couple years ago so i don't know if things have changed much since then!

To be licensed in Canada, all you have to do is to pass the national licensure exam taken in Spring of your senior year. It is all written exam and it is simplier than American licensure exams (as they have a clinical component to them).

Hey brother,

can you share your stats and when you interviewd?

Thanks

UofT student here! Graduating this year, applied to a bunch of schools and only got interviewed at UCONN and Nova! UCONN didnt respond after the interview and got accepted to NOVA! I was hoping to go to Buffalo or Michigan to stay close to home but they havent said a word yet. Nova seemed great and Florida weather is amazing! Look for me next year on TSN when the Leafs fly south to play the Panthers...I'll be the one in Blue and White😉 !

Goodluck to my fellow Canadians...will probably unknowingly bump into you at UofT or UWO interviews!

Thanks for the input, i've been getting pretty mixed answers. At my interview i talked to a 4th year who was from Toronto and she said it really wasn't a problem to get a license for Canada. But I guess i'll worry about that after I actually get into a school! 😀

Sure,
gpa 3.40
dat (american) AA 20/TS 21
I interview at BU in early feb.

Best of luck to all of you!

So far, all of the Canadian friends that I know of had taken the Canadian Licensure exam and passed and are all practicing currently in Canada. I have not heard of any failures from any of them. I think it is definitely easier than American Licensure exam (well, at least NERB/ADEC)

Whoa! Most of you guys have GPA'S above 3.3 !!!

Do schools in the states reject students that have say 3-3.3 GPA ?

Thanks

Naaahhh....it depends on your DAT scores...you kill the DATs, you're in for sure. Just apply early in the cycle as well...you shoudl file in your application in may-early june and write you DAT at the same time as well.

I might go to UBC dental school, but their tuition fees are ridicoulsy high.🙁
