An unrelated questions about the suit color: Is black or black with thin stripes the only thing that is in? or would a dark brown or gray no stripes would also do? ny advice from anyone?

any of those colors are fine....on the prelim trail EVERONE is wearing the same black suit...how dull!!

Would someone please tell me why I keep checking my email, even on weekends, every 30 minutes, in the hope of good news. Has someone actually received an offer on a weekend?
When does it all end? I agree with one of the posts that a finality, even if its a rejection, can be comforting.
I hear final Northwestern invites/rejects go out next week.

Because you are neurotic, like me. Get yourself a cell phone with GPS/EDGE so you can have it check it for you every 5 minutes. 🙂

Give this a shot:
Set up a filter on the account your eras emails go into. The filter should identify any email with the word 'interview' in it. Then have it send a text message to your cell. Here is what your text email is depending on your mobile carrier.

I've been getting all of my stuff this way, and it works pretty well. I do get some random messages from classmates since it sends any message with the word 'interview,' but it's not too bad🙂

This has worked pretty well for me, but occasionally an interview invitation will have a lot of attachments, and those will not forward to my phone. This leaves me still checking neurotically.
 
Thank you guys for the advice. Even with all the technology, I think I would still check my email every few minutes! I am but a creature of my habits 🙂
In support of this, I will say that once I got an email invite for which there was no alert in the ERAS.

Sorry N-Surge for not replying to your PM. I am debating if we should just try to guess each other's identity at the interviews we will meet at. I think someone mentioned in this forum that we should just go by our SDN identities at these interviews! :laugh:

I've heard most interviews come around thanksgiving early december, is this true??? Do schools normally give all their interviews at once or slowly send out invites?

Congrats! See you in Atlanta! Are you going to use the transportation service they recommended from the airport to the hotel? I called them, and they are going to try to group us together to reduce the cost. It's $50 if you get stuck by yourself, $25 for two, ect...Or do you know of a better way to get from the airport to the hotel?

I do not see any reason to be nervous if you have 5 interviews at this point, in fact, you should be proud of yourself! There are so many more interviews to give out, that I am sure at least 5 more will be rolling your way soon. Based on the charts, I am under the impression that over half of the interviews have not been given out. In terms of what is typical at this point, I don't know. I have an average derm app (good but nothing extraordinary), and I have 6 interviews out of 53 applications. In terms of how many interviews people get, I have heard most people are hoping for at least 7-10...but then again, it only takes 1!! So, congrats on the 5, many people I know would be so happy with that number right now! 🙂
 
I spoke with a program coord. yesterday and she said "so-and-so reviewed over 70 applications and picked x number of applicants from it and then we sent out those invites." So perhaps the reason there seem to be staggered interview invites from some programs is b/c they give their faculty flexibility of when they review and are required to submit their choices for interviews....
Which could mean that just because the list of schools that have sent out invites is roughly half full, that some of the invites from those schools still havent gone out. Also, it might mean that a late invite to a program doesn't necessarily mean that you are a 2nd tier applicant, just that the attending that picked you out of the stack submitted their list of invitees later than the other guy.

Ok, that is a waaaay too in depth analysis to try to make myself feel better 🙄

Nope, I think that's a pretty accurate analysis. At my home program, they try to send them all out at the same time, but our coordinator says that it varies widely from program to program.
 
For what I consider the top 30 academic/research places

Going through the 2007-8 list, here are programs that didn't send rejections at all last year, or sent them in January:

UPenn, Case, Emory, UWash, U Rochester, Colorado, UCSD, Pitt, Cornell, Duke


For completeness places that did send rejections:
Yale, Utah, Michigan, Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, Harvard, UTSW, Columbia, Hopkins, Jefferson, OHSU, Northwestern, BU, NYU, Wisconsin, UCSF, Wash U, Vanderbilt, U Minnesota

So maybe will give you an idea of which programs are worth holding your breath on.
