11:59 pm on February 26th.... The day we relinquish all control over our lives to a computer in Philadelphia.

Anyone else feeling a little nervous yet?

I know I am.

Tick, tick, tick, tick....

Dude I stared at my ROL last night for about an hour--I was hoping for some divine intervention... then all of a sudden... #8 skyrockets to #2! I call a friend and discuss it... he convinces me that it was a moment of pure insanity... it quietly slips back to #7. Then, I began to think "Man all these PGY-1 cities on your Supplemental blow. Maybe you should just hit Delete all ranks? Take your chances with the Scramble perhaps? It would certainly make life a bit more exciting!"

I'm totally confused. I had know idea this was gonna be so hard. All this trouble... and I'm probably gonna go unmatched anyway 😱 ...

I'm a little nervous, but I think the real panic will set in on March 16th.

Dr. Cuts, I know you are joking, but don't go with the scramble. It is much more painful than submitting a rank order list!

Yeah Annette you're probably right... today I felt much more mature and composed all day long. I didn't alter my ROL even once (grinning proudly).

Have y'all ever heard stories of someone getting a gem-of-a-program way out of his league through sheer luck in the Scramble? I'm not gonna bank on something like that... I'm just wondering.

Yeah, I do! And, he lost it! I don't know all the details, but apparently he got a great IM program during the first day of the scramble. He panicked, and called more programs. When the PD of the first program couldn't get through, he gave the spot to someone else.

Oh boy... Just realized from reading another post that we can only rank 15 programs. Otherwise, it's $30 per each additional program. Great, a new dilemma. Now I have to trim six programs from the list.

Hmm... who's it going to be? Who really loves me and who's just leading me on? What's more important, the way they look or the way they made me feel? Could I see myself happy in few years?

Dude, this is starting to sound like an episode of the Bachelor... or maybe Joe Resident (umm... not that I watch those shows or anything).

Dr. Cuts, I wouldn't recommend the option of not ranking some programs, and opting for the scramble. I'm currently an intern going into PMR (will start my PGY-2 in July this year), and didn't rank enough prelim programs, and ended up having to scramble for one. I was looking initially for a prelim Medicine spot in Chicago, but there were none available, and so I started calling up programs around the country....the medicine spots in California were all gone, and also in Seattle. I started considering other locations like Vegas, etc, with the idea of having a "fun" intern year, but found out from a friend of mine in the program that call was often q3...I ended up taking a prelim spot in pediatrics in California for the location (after 6 hours of making phone calls....a couple of people had to come back for the second day of scramble because they didn't find anything), but to make a long story short, the scramble was extremely risky, and you have to be very aggressive in trying to find a position early before the "good" spots get taken up....lots of PD's are on the phone lines talking to other candidates, and so often, the lines are busy....it was a scary situation to be in.

Just remember that if you're going for a scramble, you'll likely end up in a situation where you'll have little control over your locale, and you might end up in a program with a brutal intern schedule....another friend of mine was also scrambling, and he wanted to be in So Cal so much, he ended up having to do a year of Surgery....I talk to him every once in a while now during our intern year, and he's now working his butt off with hardly any time to enjoy being in So Cal.

If we could go back in time, we would have prefered interviewing and ranking more prelim programs. I know it's just a year...but it'll be the most brutal year of your life. If you have more programs that you could still rank that don't have brutal schedules, and are in a decent location for you to live in, I'd definitely rank them.

Good luck to you all in the Match!

Count me in on the "freaking out"....I am doing OB/GYN and have about 10 programs on my list. Each program has its pluses and minuses, but where I really run into trouble is how much weight I put on each and how important is each characteristic to me. Worse of all, I find these things change almost daily...

Ya know, my wife was due to deliver our first child, a daughter...and somehow stressing over my ROL was suddenly less critical. So, I gave my ROL a lot of serious thinking, reviewed my notes and the ton of handouts I received on interview days and then composed my ROl by gut feeling. I did not even log onto the NRMP site for 5 or 6 days. Then, I logged in, reviewed my choices...made one order change...certified and sent that dude. I followed the NRMP's & Dr. Kenneth Iserson's advice -- rank your programs in the order that you would want to attend them. Do not expend useless effort trying to predict what the program's will choose to do or trying to play the odds...simply rank them as you want them.

Once I had certified and sent my ROL, all of that "pressure" I perceived was gone. And, even more importantly, when my daughter was born @ 20:04 on Sat, 15 Feb...I could focus on loving that experience instead of fretting over my ROL.

Count me in.

I check up on my list every night before I sleep, just to make sure that it's still "certified". Today, the pressure started mounting. Number 3 jumps to number 1. I'm still not sure of my list, but I certify anyway, just in case I get hospitalized or something. This is all like something out of the DSM-IV criteria for OCD.

Congratulations, Dave, on the new baby! I did the same thing with my ROL

Hmmm... I thought that's the principle everyone follows to rank 😕 ?

And Dave, I'm glad to hear you feel relieved and unburdened now that you've certified your ROL but... you do know that you can very easily make changes to it anytime before the deadline right?

Congrats on the new daughter 🙂, and good luck to you!

Abu: royalties please 😉

That's what's starting to worry me. I ranked them so high, that there's a good chance that I'll be there in a year. I think their program is going to be excellent in a few years, but I'm worried about reputation and stuff. It might come into play if the job market tightens up. Well, too late now.

Hero, I'll buy you food if you cover the drinks!

P.S.

Urge to freak out... Fading, fading, fading, gone... rising, rising, rising...
