Hey,

I was just referred to this site by a friend and I saw the official class threads. I will be attending HMS this upcoming fall and wanted to start a harvard thread to meet my future classmates. I will be living in Vanderbilt Hall for the first year. Anyone out there joining me?

Why yes my good sir. I am Henry Rockefeller Merck the third, and will also be residing in Vanderbilt. We will have a jolly good time playing badminton at fair Harvard.
Past the stereotypes, I wish I was going to HMS.

Hey Peace,

I too, will be at HMS and living in Vandy this fall. Although, I'm sorry to report that I don't play badminton, or for that matter, croquet, I am really psyched to be living in Boston (big improvement over my current situation in hip and happening Buffalo, NY), and looking forward to meeting our classmates. Thanks for setting up this post 😛

hey Luna,

Are you doing the outdoor orientation in NH? I wasn't sure but decided to do it because I didn't know anyone in the entering class.

Hi Guys,

Living in Vandy too.. anyone into maybe forming a 1st year basketball intramural league?

The class hours seem short as heck (I realize we need to study on our own..) but I never had so much free time in college..

Peace - Unfortunately I'm stuck here at my summer job until august 20th, so I won't be able to make the camping trip =(

Bill - I'm definitely a bit too uncoordinated to play b-ball successfully. I tend to stick to running, which involves only 2 legs, as opposed to 2 legs and 2 arms. Still, with the court right in house, starting a league is good idea.

Hey, everyone. I am also going to be starting at Harvard next year and living in Vanderbilt Hall. I really wanted to go on the back packing orientation too, but work related obligations are keeping me in California until August 22.

I'm definitely getting excited/anxious about moving to Boston. It is nice to have a chance to talk to other people preparing to do the same thing.

By the way, do any of you get any weird vibes from other people about going to Harvard? Any time I ask a stupid question at work or make a mistake my boss always asks "And you got into Harvard?!"

Hey,

Another future HMS 1st year e-mailed me about this, and I wanted to check with you guys..

On the term bill they mailed, was Vandy charges listed? I signed up for a place, and got that info, but it's not listed on the charge sheet..

Maybe its for free!!

Hi,

Can't wait to meet my future classmates. When are you all moving in? I'm not doing any of the pre-orientation things. Not sure when to leave my summer job 🙂 See you in a few weeks!

hmm...must change my signature huh?

Hi Guys,

Did anyone get the oritentaion packets, and about the required readings.. I think I'm the oddman out, and never got anything..

lucky them put those stuff online.

-Bill

well, i've gotten packets from harvard in the mail 3 days in a row -- thursday, friday, and saturday. first was the packet with the readings, then a packet about health services, then a packet about primary care mentorships. it's pretty cool, though i am most looking forward getting the orientation schedule!

Hey, I just thought I'd let you guys know some information I found out that really wasn't publicized by HMS anywhere... if you are looking for a laptop for med school, you can get an IBM through Harvard at a discounted rate. For $1493, you can get a T40 with a 1.5 Centrino processor, 512 RAM, 40 GB, wireless, and a 3 year warranty -- a sweet deal! PM me if you have any questions about it.

Don't shoot me, but I hear that HMS' program ISN'T so great and that the students are unhappy. I guess y'all are a little biased, but I'd be interested to hear honest rebuttals/responses once you arrive in Cambridge...

Hi Merlin,

I'm moving in on the 22nd.. I think that's the first day.. I want a couple of days to hang out with some classmates and figure out Boston.

To everyone else,

Also, am I the only one who hasnt gotten the orientation stuff (readings, mentorships ,etc.) I've gotten everything else (term bill, health insurance), but the rest of the stuff.. arghh I'm going abroad in 3 days too..

-Bill

BlueJayBill,

I don't think that the bill includes Vandy charges...I too, got a confirmation from housing, but it's nowhere to be found on the billing statement. I'm sure that you will be getting your orientation packet shortly. I got 2 envelopes - one with mentoring info (just a scheduled meeting time in sept) + two packets of reading on current issues in health care, and another with health services info. The only thing impt there is whether to enroll in the blue cross blue shield plan that the school offers.

Merlin,
Congrats!!! I'm moving in on the 22nd. Wrapping up my job in a few weeks, and really excited about Boston =)

P.S. I'm looking into getting a cell phone plan for the fall....does anyone know which service gets the best reception around the longwood area?

Hi Luna,

When I was up there I had no trouble with Sprint and Cingular.. I'm curious if there is some kind of discount for Harvard students.. my old school was able to finnagle a solid 15% off..

hope it helps,

Bill
