OFFICIAL interview CANCELLATION thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got over my closing doors fear, cancelled:

UT-El Paso
Scott&White
Cook County
MGH
Kern
Orlando

Deciding which one I should cancel: UNM or Dallas

UT-El Paso is a 4 year undergrad college with no medical school.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso however has an EM residency. 😀

Ooooh! Don't really know your programs burn!!!

this one hurt to cancel. Maricopa 12/1. Hope someone enjoys as much as i would have.

Cancelled BWH/Mass General, which felt very strange doing so.

Cancelled Brown, WashU, UCSF-Fresno... kind of sad about all of these, but there just isn't enough time/$ to go on every interview...

Cancelled Jefferson 12/17
Christiana 12/18
Buffalo 12/23
Will most likely be cancelling UCONN 12/22.
If you are planning on cancelling a Metrohealth interview on 12/17, please PM me. It would make my life a little easier if i could squeeze that one on 12/17.

Canceled my interview @ the new Univ of Toledo program.

withdrew from NYHQ today. never scheduled interview

Canceled --

St V's Toledo
University of Rochester
Albert Einstein - Beth Israel

So..... I have to post this, because it has irritated the living **** outta me. If anyone is thinking about cancelling interviews, please do it in a timely manner, not the DAY BEFORE (or even a few days before). I am on a waitlist for somewhere I am really interested in going, and they contacted me literally 16 hours before interview time to see if I would be able to make it because "someone just cancelled". Of course, I couldn't. Now I have to wait, if the opportunity even comes around again.

I'm not saying you guys aren't doing the right thing, just making a point. Sorry for my crankiness, I just needed to vent.

i second that, and thanks everyone for making the effort and updating what's going on with you on the trail.
GoBukeyes, were you contacted via telephone? I got a call from an unknown number which i can't call back to, and I am nervously wondering if that's the awaited interview invitation from the program that put on on a waiting list... do they do this over the phone?

Exactly. If you don't think you're going to go to an interview, cancel now. Don't sit on your hands long enough to screw somebody else out of a potential interview spot.

I was emailed first, read it 15 minutes after it was sent (I have email notifier on my phone, so I know when new ones arrive in my inbox). After we played email tag and figured out I wouldn't be able to make it, they said they would call me next time with hopefully longer notcie. We'll see what happens.
The reason i was super irritated is because I'm in the geographic area right now where this potential interview is, and would save me $300 on a plane ticket.

I just cancelled Arkansas-Little Rock a couple days ago. It was for a date in late January, so that should be plenty of time.

I'm getting close to canceling a couple interviews...

Just out of curiousity, what is the best way to cancel (phone vs email)? I would like to just email places since it would save me time but I'm unsure of the way to word it. Maybe something like the following:

"Thank you for your interest in Future Doc B. He regrets to inform you that he will not be able to accept your interview offer at this time. He has received over X amount of interview invitations for approximately 10-12 slots. Unfortunately, despite the strength of your program, he is unable to interview everywhere that grants him an interview. Future Doc B would like to wish your program the best of luck in the future." 🙄

But seriously what does one say in the cancellation email.

🙂

I said the following:

Dear Ms./Mr. Whosyadaddy,

While I was looking forward to interviewing with your program, I regret that I will be unable to attend my interview day on month/day. I very much appreciate the invitation and wish you and your program the best of luck this match season.

Thank you very much again.

Sincerely,

Tybalt, Princess of Power.

Short, sweet, polite, though admittadly lacking in my typically amazing sarcastic banter.

C'mon, cancel those interviews ! - I'm crossing my fingers that a magic program/date combo happens to drop and makes my life infinitely easier.

Thanks Tybalt for the exceptional "break-up" letter! I made some modifications but otherwise...

So 1 down...

Yeah. Plus, it could eventually come back to burn you. Check out this part of an email I got from a program:

Should you be unable to attend a scheduled interview (weather, family crisis, found your perfect program, dead car, dog ate the invite, etc.), please let that program know ASAP. Many programs have waiting lists, and as a courtesy to your future colleagues, please give them an opportunity to take your place. "No-shows" are uniformly viewed poorly by program directors. Many program directors will contact a "no-show" student's letter writers and Dean's office.

Yikes!

How many students are really no shows at this point in time? Any applicant who does not have the courtesy to call if they are unable to attend due to weather, travel delays etc. also deserves to get nailed. There is no excuse.

There should be a two-week minimum rule for cancelling interviews. I try to give programs as much notice as possible and even got a thank you e-mail from NYP for the consideration I showed the program by cancelling early.

I received an email from a student in my class who was complained to by a program for a few people in my class this year who were unfortunately rude enough to no-show. My mom really just raised me better than that. (not much better, but better nonetheless).

I hear San Francisco is a filthy, disease-ridden city where everyone smells bad and steals your money. If I had an interview there I would cancel it immediately...

Northwestern, Brooklyn Hospital, Mt. Sinai in NYC, UPenn, and OHSU... all more than one month in advance of the interview! Good luck to everyone!

come on, you know you want to cancel that interview... 🙂
although right now I am feeling a little 🙁

but hopefully it will become a 🙂))

OK, maybe not hate, but jealous of all of you nonetheless!!

Reject interviews??? I am begging for some !!!! I've had like 8 offers, total.... that's it..... 8....... most from small programs that people have never heard of unless they check the list of residency sites... I've been rejected so much I should be on prozac prophylactically!!!

I like the way one student I met put it... if I don't get in, I'll consider law school, and learn to sue doctors, with discounts given to those suing alumni from their own school, double discounts if it is a faculty member, and free if it somebody who interviewed them.

Maybe I should have gone into FM, and become one of those poor and hapless souls who know neither happiness nor joy, having died in their spirit and mind from the endless torture that is primary care hell.

"Goose", from Top Gun:
Maybe I could be a truck driver. You got the number of that truck-driving school?

Settle, petal. 🙂

- I've only got seven so far, with a fistful of rejections as well. Its not the fourth-quarter yet. You can only realistically attend around 10 anyways, so let's not get all in a tizzy. I feel confident in my ability to match at my top-half.

Hey, that actually sounds poetic!

Don't worry, it'll work out... even with 8 interviews, you have a really great chance of matching, AND it's still not that late in the season so you're bound to get a couple more... hang in there, good luck! 🙂

Ouch...true I didn't really know this, I assumed Texas Tech = UT.... haha. No excuses, I'm ignorant about Texas programs, and Texas in general...ah well, they're cancelled anyway 🙂

I'm considering Denver, Yale, UCSF, Stanford, UCLA-Olive View and UCLA-Harbor for geographical reasons and expense (I'd like to be in the North East in a big city). Any reasons to not cancel these?

They're all badass programs, but everyone tells me that geography should be near the top of your priority list in terms of choosing a residency. Sounds like you've made up your mind on where you want to live.

That being said, I canceled both Denver and Yale due to the same reasons you listed. VERY painful emails to send. 🙁

I know, just turned down the same two and LA programs. I'm still debating UCSF and Stanford. I've never really been to the bay area, but it seems to me a bit too hippy-ish for me.... Would it be selfish to interview even if I'm pretty sure the location probably wouldn't work? Have you guys chosen/considered choosing a program that's so great it trumps geographical considerations?

I'm considering places whose non-ideal geography still trumps scrambling. 😉

But I'm a DO, and a bit paranoid.

I'm confused as to why wanting to be in the Northeast and in a city leads to turning down Yale, though. New Haven ain't New York, but it's still a city, and very much in the Northeast.

I want to be in a really big city in the NE area. NYC may be the only one that qualifies.... really should have applied to more than 2 programs there! 🙁

Cancelled my interview at St. Vincent's Toledo...

Just a reminder to those canceling:

Let us know WHEN you're canceling those interviews. Airfares ain't cheap, y'know.

Canceled a January 19th interview. I really wanted to go, but it was impossible... 🙁 I hope one of you can take that spot. It is a really cool program, and they just started a Wilderness Medicine Fellowship, too.

My dream is to be able to cancel an interview. At least I'm no longer in "probably won't match" land. Good luck everyone.

thanks hornsfan!
you are the second person i know that had cancelled...
I emailed the program coordinator saying I learned that an interview was cancelled, and if i will be invited for an interview. I think i annoyed her a little, but not sure.
do you think i asked a legitimate question?

thanks!

Total last minute, but I just canceled NY Presby for tomorrow. I think I have the freaking flu.

If anyone is planning on cancelling an interview at Cook, Resurrection, or U of I could you please let me know?

This is my first time on the Board (which is very helpful btw) so I'm not sure how this works but everyone seems really helpful here...
Thanks a million!
