Got over my closing doors fear, cancelled:
UT-El Paso
Scott&White
Cook County
MGH
Kern
Orlando
Deciding which one I should cancel: UNM or Dallas
UT-El Paso is a 4 year undergrad college with no medical school.
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso however has an EM residency. 😀
If anyone is thinking about cancelling interviews, please do it in a timely manner, not the DAY BEFORE (or even a few days before).
I was emailed first, read it 15 minutes after it was sent (I have email notifier on my phone, so I know when new ones arrive in my inbox). After we played email tag and figured out I wouldn't be able to make it, they said they would call me next time with hopefully longer notcie. We'll see what happens.i second that, and thanks everyone for making the effort and updating what's going on with you on the trail.
GoBukeyes, were you contacted via telephone? I got a call from an unknown number which i can't call back to, and I am nervously wondering if that's the awaited interview invitation from the program that put on on a waiting list... do they do this over the phone?
I'm getting close to canceling a couple interviews...
Just out of curiousity, what is the best way to cancel (phone vs email)? I would like to just email places since it would save me time but I'm unsure of the way to word it. Maybe something like the following:
"Thank you for your interest in Future Doc B. He regrets to inform you that he will not be able to accept your interview offer at this time. He has received over X amount of interview invitations for approximately 10-12 slots. Unfortunately, despite the strength of your program, he is unable to interview everywhere that grants him an interview. Future Doc B would like to wish your program the best of luck in the future." 🙄
But seriously what does one say in the cancellation email.
Exactly. If you don't think you're going to go to an interview, cancel now. Don't sit on your hands long enough to screw somebody else out of a potential interview spot.
Should you be unable to attend a scheduled interview (weather, family crisis, found your perfect program, dead car, dog ate the invite, etc.), please let that program know ASAP. Many programs have waiting lists, and as a courtesy to your future colleagues, please give them an opportunity to take your place. "No-shows" are uniformly viewed poorly by program directors. Many program directors will contact a "no-show" student's letter writers and Dean's office.
How many students are really no shows at this point in time? Any applicant who does not have the courtesy to call if they are unable to attend due to weather, travel delays etc. also deserves to get nailed. There is no excuse.
There should be a two-week minimum rule for cancelling interviews. I try to give programs as much notice as possible and even got a thank you e-mail from NYP for the consideration I showed the program by cancelling early.
...and become one of those poor and hapless souls who know neither happiness nor joy, having died in their spirit and mind from the endless torture that is primary care hell...

I'm considering Denver, Yale, UCSF, Stanford, UCLA-Olive View and UCLA-Harbor for geographical reasons and expense (I'd like to be in the North East in a big city). Any reasons to not cancel these?
They're all badass programs, but everyone tells me that geography should be near the top of your priority list in terms of choosing a residency. Sounds like you've made up your mind on where you want to live.
That being said, I canceled both Denver and Yale due to the same reasons you listed. VERY painful emails to send. 🙁
Have you guys chosen/considered choosing a program that's so great it trumps geographical considerations?
I'm considering places whose non-ideal geography still trumps scrambling. 😉
But I'm a DO, and a bit paranoid.
I'm confused as to why wanting to be in the Northeast and in a city leads to turning down Yale, though. New Haven ain't New York, but it's still a city, and very much in the Northeast.
come on, you know you want to cancel that interview... 🙂
although right now I am feeling a little 🙁
but hopefully it will become a 🙂))
thanks hornsfan!it may be your lucky day.... i just canceled uconn for 12/22. hope that helps you out!
