OFFICIAL Interview Invite Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just had my interview at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology (psyD clinical). There is one more interview next week, i believe for the early apllicants. They told us today that they will let all the early applicants know about a decision within the next 2-4 weeks. If you get a call, its good news. If you get snail mail, its bad news. Hopes this helps some people!

Let me know if you want to know the types of questions they ask.

I'm likely the only one who cares about Texas Tech University, but I got a voicemail from one of my persons of interest today who wants to do a phone interview. Now I'm paranoid to call her back! This is supposed to be one of my "safe" schools but after a number of rejections, one after another, as of late, I'm being pessimistic about all of them now.

They asked several questions about my personal past; questions like "give me an example of one time where you...". Some of them were kind of strange, but nothing too difficult. Be prepared to answer questions about particular theoretical orientations, and which you plan on following (if your program has flexibility. if not, be prepared to talk about the theoretical orientation the school follows).

I called Case today and they said they're doing a big review of applicants on Friday. Wisconsin-Milwaukee also said that they are reviewing applications this week and invites will probably start next week. As for Miami, I called and received a rude response on the other end. The lady told me she has nothign to do with the admission committee and cannot tell me anything about invites. I did not care for that response since Miami was my top choice! 😡

Here are very common interview questions for Ph.D. psych programs... I will post more later as I remember them-

**
-Why do you want to go to *this* particular program?
-Why do you want to go into psychology? How did you become interested in psychology?
-What is your greatest weakness?
-What do you see yourself doing once you get your degree/ what kind of setting?
-Why do you want a Ph.D? It is primarily a research degree....
-What has your research experience been so far?

Woo hoo! Today is my lucky day. I was invited to open house/interviews at Northern Illinois University on Feb. 22-23. My mind is somewhat relieved that I am not a totally incompetent student now! 😀

Cheers!

No your not alone. They are extending invites through the end of the week with an interview day of 2-9 based on the website. Congrats and good luck.

By the way, has anyone else noticed how many views this thread is getting? I bet by the time all is said and done we are up to 25-30k!

i'm responsible for at least 50 each day.. 🙄

I got a call today from my person of interest at UNC-Chapel Hill, it was kind of a pre-interview phone interview. He said that they were almost done figuring out whom to interview and that he would let me know if I will be interviewing in-person within the next 48 hours. The interview date is Feb 23.

Bugger...got rejected from Wisconsin-Madison...ugh...that was one of the top choices.

Anyhow, final decisions on who to interview (for clinical) are tomorrow (Jan 23rd) so presumably they'll let everyone know by then.

Hope somebody gets it🙂

hey tkj, how did you find out about this?
I have not heard anything from them so far.

How did you hear from NIU? I'm still in the dark here on my status....

I received an email this afternoon from them, right after I opened my rejection letter from Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln. T'was a nice pick-me-up!

G'luck!

Is this adult track clinical?

Humm...UNC's website still says interview notifications will be on 2/1. Hopefully your prof of interest is just really on the ball. Good luck getting that interview in any case.

I will update the list later tonight but I just got an interview invite from West Virginia University. Sorry, I would update now but I am TAing at the moment 🙂

Hey, I agree, I wasn't expecting it. I was in the lab and my phone rang with the '919' area code and I was SURE it was Duke, but it turned out to be UNC. I think he may have just been on the ball and partly wanting to make sure I was still interested in UNC... my person from Vanderbilt did something very similar, apparently contacting me way before people were generally contacted. So I would say that me being contacted was definitely an exception and to not worry until 2/1 about being contacted.

Hi, i was wondering how the USC interview was notified? mail/phone and when thanks

Congrats on the call, Hipinion!

FWIW, I applied to UNC Chapel Hill adult clinical and have not been contacted yet. But I did email them yesterday, and was told that the committee is still actively reviewing applications and "applicants who will be invited to interview should be contacted soon, around the 1st of February."

Joel (sleepless in Seattle)

I also have not heard a word and am an applicant at Chapel Hill. For some reason I view it as a reach and have not really been expecting to hear from them, but it would be a nice if I did 🙂. Congrats to Hipinion (I know, a bit early, but it has to be a good sign) as well!

My friend found out today that she got into UCSB. That's hot.

I went to UCSB as an undergrad (not in psych). So i would be happy to offer any info regarding the surrounding area. Of course that was almost a decade ago.... wow feeling old.

I got a call yesterday from the professor I want to work with at the University of Virginia (kind of a pre-interview phone call, I think). Apparently interview invites will be extended via phone over the next couple of days. 🙂

I was offered an interview when I called asking when interviews would be offered (who knew it was that easy?!?!?). It's likely interviews invites would be finished in the next couple of days, but I have no proof to back that up.

Interview weekend is 2/16-2/17, with the 16th being a dinner with current graduate students.

The professor I wanted to work with sent me an email. I talked with the guy for a very long time last night...really nice! I think you'd love it at Wisconsin, it seems like such an amazing place to study. It's very strange...I'm not sure if I'm being rejected or getting an interview invite. Anyhow, final decisions for clinical interviews are being made today. I guess we'll both find out what's going on soon enough...too bad I can't check my email at work!!!

I actually did my undergrad in U-dub Madtown.
let me know if "YOU" have any question about a particular professor.
good luck and let me know what happens

I got a call yesterday evening for an invite to Missouri-St. Louis.
The interview day is 2/23

Also have a phone interview today with U Oregon. I don't know if this is a "pre-interview" or the only interview. (Anyone else have any idea)

Trying to contain my excitement ...😀

I just got an invite from UNC. YAY! My prof of interest called me this morning. So...UNC is officially inviting. Good luck everyone- it seems like they are a popular school this year.

Congrats! It was a very popular pick this year so receiving an interview is quite a compliment! I hope you get much more than that, and I hope I hear from them soon 🙂.

Thanks Irish...same to you. I really appreciate you maintaining this thread. It really helps calm me down & make me feel like I'm still somehow involved in this process.

Do you think it is a problem admitting that you are a generalist at this point? I just got off the phone with a person of interest who described her research (which deals with a certain age group) and she was wondering basically if I would be open to that research. I was very honest in that I am open to all of the research in my field, but I as of yet do not know where my ultimate interests lie just because I haven't had enough experience in the field. I was honest but after I hung up I cringed a bit just because I know it may come back to bite me a bit.

What do you think? Is it alright to be a generalist at this stage? Say your interest is in ADHD...is it alright to say that you are interested in that but are not sure if you want to study children or adults at this point just because you do not have enough experience yet? I really hope so! Let me know what you think though!

Just when I got back fro my interview in Chicago, I received snail mail invite to an interview at U of Indianapolis. The interviews are either on Friday Feb 16th or Saturday Feb 17th. I'm probably going to the 17th. Also, they offer this cool reception with students and faculty on friday, and the Grad Psych Association for the school has another event planned after at a comedy club. Sounds so fun! Let me know if anyone else here is gonna go!

Interviews for University of Missouri - Columbia are 2/02/07. Phone invitations started going out on 01/17/07. 🙂

I have a phone call set up with my professor of interest at Emory. She said I made it to her short list of applicants, so I'm assuming it's some kid of pre-interview screening - I'm nervous!

Hi All,
Just got off the phone with my prof. of interest at University of Oregon. I thought it was going to be a phone interview but turned out to be an invite instead!!
Interview dates are 2/16 - 2/18 (it's a whole grand weekend!)

Good luck to everyone :luck:

Hey GA,

Is your Oregon interview in the Counseling or Clinical?

Thanks,
*Ella

irish- I think its smart to be a generalist at this point. It sounds like you phrased your response very intelligently. I don't think that its a bad idea to name some specific interests...but I also think its wise to make it clear that you are open to anything in your general area of interest. Anyone who penalizes you for being open to new ideas/ areas of research probably wouldn't make a good mentor anyway. So, no worries.

I got an interview with Yale (for their clinical program) today (Jan 23)!!!!!! Wow, I'm super happy because that was also one of my top choices. Apparently they do NOT do in-person interviews.

Wow, Yale- congrats. Do you mind me asking what sorts of questions you got? I would think they would have your prof of interest call first...that's an interesting approach.

Thanks Psychxiety, that is good to hear. The more I think about it the more I think it went alright, and i will stress during my interview that I am truly open to all of the research and want to be involved broadly.

I just e-mailed the UOregon secretary to find about whether interviews were offered for my specific PhD program (as I applied to the developmental PhD program there).

She replied saying all departments have interviews, as noted in an earlier post, the weekend of Feb 16th-18th, and that all interviews would be offered by Feb 2nd (likely by phone)

I received an e-mail back from the graduate secretary saying interviews are currently being offered, as confirmed by an earlier post as well.

Wheeee! Just got off the phone - it wasn't too scary - and she offered me an interview at the end of the conversation! It's on Feb. 9

OK, you can go ahead and add these dates which were collected via using my insanely low-tech espionage skills:

University of Vermont - Friday, 2/16
University of Tennessee - Friday, 2/23
University of Wyoming - Saturday & Sunday 2/24-2/25
