OFFICIAL Interview Invite Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey... I'm new here but I've been checking this religiously so I thought I'd join.

The question about anyone hearing from PsyD programs... I've heard from one. I hesitate to say where because I don't want to be put down for applying to the "professional schools" that offer Clinical PsyD programs, but it is Argosy University in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are allowing me a lot of flexibility in choosing an interview date (which is sooo nice!) so it will be in early March sometime, probably on a Thursday. And in my defense, these programs are all APA accredited and they cost just as much as a similar program at an established university. 🙂

Anyone else applying to California Clinical PsyD programs? My app deadline wasn't until January 15, so it is probably early to be hearing about interviews... but I'm still nervous!

Don't let the nay-sayers get you down about professional psych schools. I applied to the Chicago School of Prof. Psychology and I was skeptical at first as well. After I went there for the interview, I felt alot better about it. Also, like you said, the ones that are APA accredited are ont he same level as the other schools. Its all about taste. These schools may not have the same resources as a program that is associated with a larger university (for me, one of the drawbacks in no health coverage), but they are also smaller and may have good networks. Just weight the pros and cons of each program, and dont sweat the professional school title too much. Be sure it has that APA logo tho 😀

would you mind sharing what you were asked? Especially if there is anything you were not expecting..I have my first one friday and that would be really helpful..Don't worry too much about your bad interview..you never know and you still have one more and time to recieve more invites..just focus on what is next!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I was asked a lot of unexpected questions actually. I mean there were the standard "What are your research interests" although i was trying to stay general and he kept asking me for a specific research question. He asked me "With unlimited resources and time what study would you do?". I know someone had posted that they were asked that but it still totally through me for a loop. I couldnt help but think of a million things and had trouble thinking of one ideal study. He also asked me "What is your work style?", "How do you think you work by your self and in a group?" "What are your career goals?" and "Do you think you would fit with our programs" Since it is Buffalo he asked me if I thought i could handle the snowy weather. While i didnt expect some i had great answers in my head that becuase of nerves howver didnt come out right. LOL any way sorry for the long post. Hope that helps!

Congats to all who have interviews and invites! I am not sure if anyone else on this forum has applied to Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Psy.D. program, but I just talked with a grad student in the admissions office (Clinical student) and she said that invites will be extended in the beggining of Febuary. Interviews will be held every Monday and Friday during the last half of Febuary and the first part of March. You are able to pick which date you would like to attend. Strange, huh?

Good Luck everyone!!!

I know someone who got a call today from their person of interest inviting them to interview at BU. Interview dates are mid-Feb

Hey everyone just joined!! I applied to 15 programs this year... last year it was 13. Here is what I know/ remember abouta couple of my schools:

BU- interviews are going out this week
Duke- You will know if you have an interview by the end of next week
UCSD/SDS joint: interview dates are 19th and 20th. I am guessing they will go out next week or later
U pitt- website says you should hear from them by feb
American-- if I remember correctly last year their interviews were early March

Psy D. programs-- keep in mind MANY Psy.D programs have rolling admission meaning if the haven't contacted you yet... there may still be a chance.

Stanford is rolling admission and they are Jan 29 and a couple more dates through Feb and early March

Rutgers Psyd will be contacting people early Feb

Baylor- hahaha they had to relocate during this process and they haven't even reviewed apps yet. They said mid feb we should hear something

That is all I know as of now.

Did well enough? Mine was more like "Are you still interested in the program? OK, see you at the interview followed by some casual conversation. Didn't get the impression the conversation had much to do with assessing if I should be invited. Different prof's have different methods I guess.

As you said different methods for different professors. I mentioned previously that this was supposed to be one of my "safe" schools but I was somewhat concerned after the phone interview because the prof drilled me on research interests, why I'm interested in those things, how my interests fit in with hers, and "oh, give me a hypothetical study you could conduct using my research" . . . among other things. I was advised that I was a strong applicant, good numbers, great LORs, etc., but I should not take the interview for granted because I will have my master's degree after this semester. Doesn't seem like it would be a problem but they allegedly do not even plan on considering very many for admissions this upcoming year. We shall see!

Better you than me! I don't know if there are any safe schools in Clinical PhD land but I know what you mean. Tech had a huge increase in app's last year so who knows if that will happen again. See you in Lubbock!

Just heard from BU today! Interviews are Feb. 12th and 16th.

For the people who have heard from WashU - do you mind saying what professor/lab you were interested in?

Got an invite from temple this afternoon via email.

2/2 and 2/5 are the interview dates.

I just called a few schools and got this information:

Rutgers Clinical (PhD)- will extend interview invitations by Friday 01/26/07 at the latest.

UC Berkley Clinicial (PhD) - will finish extending interview invitations by the end of this week (let's just say 01/28/07) to be safe.

Harvard Clinical (PhD)- don't know when they'll extend invitations yet, but interviews will be in mid-February

Sorry to hear that you have heard nothing... where else have you applied?

Miami, Duke, Florida, Memphis, Case, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, VCU, UVA, and UMBC

I know most of my schools havent given all invites yet so I'm not in complete panic mode but still! Miami was my top choice and I havent heard anything and others have so I'm a bit disappointed.

Im thinking about applying to some Masters programs over in the UK. They have better reputations than programs here. I think I will apply to research methods masters programs - hopefully that will help me next year since my hope for getting in this year is getting smaller and smaller.

Congrats to everyone who got interviews and know that I am super jealous!

Don't give up hope just yet! I hadn't heard anything from the programs I applied to until this week. And I have about 7-8 others that are still reviewing apps for another week or two . . . or three. Yours could be doing the same. G'luck!

Anyone actually heard from Rutgers yet? Also anything from Northwestern (Evanston PhD)?

Geeze, thanks for bursting my happy 'lil bubble! I refuse to go through this process yet again, but who knows . . . third time's the charm, or so they claim, eh?

G'luck!

Has Anyone got an invitation from Drexel?
If that's the case.... I am doomed....

Feeling a little dramatic? There's always next year (that & margaritas 😉).
Seriously, I know I'm feeling a little stressed out...esp seeing all of the round II players on this board. That aside, being fatalistic really isn't going to help.

The only thing I have heard from Drexel was that they didn't get my transcript *rolls eyes*. They are giving people until Friday to get all the materials in. By this standard, they may or may not have started the review process yet. Don't consider yourself doomed just yet. 😎

Irish,
Where are you getting info on interview invites? From folks on SDN who have been invited?

If So, University of Pittsburgh is out, as of yesterday. Interview day is 02/17

The interview dates for ISU (school psych PhD) was 1/17 & 1/18 and they said they will give a yes, no or waitlist decision within a week or 2 (I currently wait in anxiety), if anyone's applying to school psych programs or is interested

I just got an email interview invite for the University of Wisconsin-Madison's counseling psychology PhD program for January 30th, a big shock to me since I considered it my biggest reach. It's a phone interview, and they hope to have final admissions decisions made by February 19th.

Got an invite from temple this afternoon via email.

2/2 and 2/5 are the interview dates.

hey sorg ~ was that email from your prof. of interest or a general one sent to everyone from the grad dept at temple?

aka should i give up hope?!

Psyhopeful, all the information I post is either posted on this board or are PMed to me through this forum. I try not to post information that I am not confident is accurate. If you have questions to the validity of something, please let me know and I will try to verify. I don't save my PMs very long because I am averaging about 25 a day (not that I mind) but I will try.

I got a call from Berkeley! They are inviting 18 people in for interviews but I don't know the dates yet.

Did anyone here get an invite to UCLA? Have you had trouble actually scheduling the interview? I called the coordinator so I could schedule with my faculty members of interest and she said that some faculty haven't said when they'd be available yet. I can't imagine that we are required to be there from thursday to saturday evening. I am trying to book plane tickets but don't know when to make them since I have no clue when my actual interviews will be! If anyone else is having this problem, what are you doing?

I just received an e-mail this evening inviting me to interview at Temple! The e-mail was sent from the chair of the clinical admissions committee, and it looks a generic e-mail that was sent to everyone invited. As someone else posted, interviews are either 2/2 or 2/5.

Has anyone received the mailed interview invitation from UMD-College Park? I have no idea what format the interview weekend will take and I am wondering if it is a panel interview or with just select faculty. Feel free to PM me if you do not want to post it on here. Thanks.

does anyone have the issue of having more than one interview on a certain day?? how are you handling it?

Yes! I don't know what to do about it really either, and I am totally stressing. I committed to Univ. of Hartford (Psy.D.) on Feb. 9th but I just got an email from UCSB (yes, I thought they were over also) to come Feb 9th so I have to figure out what to do... does it look incredibly awful to change Hartford to a later date since they are holding interviews every Friday in February???

Hey, I interviewed there a few years back. There were no panel interviews (I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. As in multiple applicants at once? or multiple faculty at once? I've never seen either). All the interviews were one-on-one, except sometimes multiple students would interview you at once. It was a pretty standard interview, with a presentation at the beginning and then individual meetings after that and tours after that. It was a long day- they served us breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I ended up being quite impressed with the program, although it wasn't the best match for me. :luck:

Just heard from BU today! Interviews are Feb. 12th and 16th.
do you know if BU is done with invites? (for example, if the invite came from your person of interest, there might still be some to come?
thanks!

Has anyone heard from BC counseling, UNC Charlotte clinical, Binghampton clinical, or Georgia State clinical and/or counseling?

Thank you in advance🙂

I heard from my person of interest (neuro, not anxiety), so I wouldn't give up hope just if you haven't heard yet. I think this was the first day of invites. Good luck!

I applied to Georgia State Clinical and have not heard anything either but their website says interview day is Feb. 16th or 17th..so either we both didn't get interviews or they are hopefully sending invites in the next week..let me know if you hear anything.

For what it's worth, I applied to Georgia State social, and I also have not heard anything. Can you get into their GoSOLAR system? It says they don't have my application, but I got confirmation from the grad secretary saying they had everything.

I just heard from the Virginia Consortium-the one PsyD I applied to. Interviews are Feb 16 and 23

thanks for replying! at least twice already i have freaked out because someone on this board said they got an invite and i didn't, and then i got one a day or two later. hopefully that will happen with BU as well.

I am wondering if GSU has contacted any applicants yet, because I applied there as well and I have not heard anything. I sent an inquiring e-mail to the admissions coordinator and have yet to receive a response. But as I said before I am considering no news as good news right now 🙂
Don't want a rejection e-mail at this stage of the game!

Hey guys...just thought I'd lay down as many of the interview questions I can come up that seem to keep popping up. Hopefully this is helpful for people that are trying to prepare for interviews.

1) If you had unlimited resources, what type of experiment would you design? (Seriously, this question is ludicrous, but they ask it a lot, so have an answer)

2) ^ - Sometimes to followup: If you had very limited resources and could only design an experiment to answer 1 question, what would it be?

3) Describe your past research experience

4) Describe past research experience that you initiated

5) What types of experiments / research do you plan on carrying out here?

6) What do you see as the function of clinical training? What are your thoughts on it?

7) What are your research interests? How do they blend in with what your professor of interest is doing (while being different somehow)

8) Why are you interested in studying what you want to study?

9) How would you improve upon some of the past research / experiments that you have done?

10) What type of research / working style are you looking for (i.e what types of research designs to you look to employ? Analyzing massive data sets? Small experimental manipulations? Etc...).

To be fair though, only about 2-3 questions seem to get asked in an hour + interview with the rest of the conversation being more along the lines of a getting to know you conversation. I mean, let's be honest, it's a feeling out process for both parties not only to see if there is an academic match but also a social one.

Anyhow, that's the impression I get...I could also have bombed all my interviews thus far so take it with a grain of salt😉

Thanks for that post. It is very helpful!

I applied to GSU and haven't heard anything either... last year they contacted people pretty late into the game. I think it was something like 2 weeks b-4 the interview... which actually is pretty standard

And just a heads up for you Rutgers clinical Ph.D people last year around early Feb you were able to call the psychology clinical secretary and she would tell you over the phone if you rejected, wait listed, or had an interview. I don't think the Psy.D program it as willing to do that b/c there a so many applicants.

Anyone heard anything or know anything about these schools?

U of Colorado at Boulder
Florida State
U of Iowa clinical
U of Albany
American U

One of my friends got an invite from U Kansas - Child Clinical. I think she said interviews are on Feb 5th.

I just got an email interview invite from UVA Curry school of ed for their Clinical program. So keep a look out for it if you applied!

Where were you asked the question about designing studys with unlimited or very limited resources? How did you answer and how specific were you? I agree that is kind of a ridiculous question! We are coming to grad school to learn and we don't know enough yet to give a really legitamate answer..

Just curious, does anyone have information about the U of Utah, Idaho State, or North and South Dakota? I applied to their clinical programs and am waiting for a reply. Also, has anyone received an actual invite for U of South Carolina?

Thanks!!!

😳 I know..... Psychxiety haha, but there is no next year for me (since this is my second time) so I guess margarita would be my only frined......😀

I just got an email interview invite from UVA Curry school of ed for their Clinical program. So keep a look out for it if you applied!

I thought their invites start tomorrow? Now Im even more nervousabout hearing from them! Oy vey!

I know the deadlines for most of the Canadian clinical programs were later than the US clinical programs' deadlines, but has anyone heard from any Canadian schools?
