OFFICIAL Interview Invite Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all, a question: my research interests have developed during the application process, and lately I've been very excited about a particular topic within my rather broad area of interest (trauma and resiliency). The problem is, I said nothing about this specific topic in my personal statements. If it still fits with the research of my POI, should I mention this new interest during my interviews? Or should I just stick with what I've already written?

Firstly, I want to thank you guys for posting. It has been so helpful to see where other people stand. I applied to seven schools and have only heard from one (yet)--so nerves have certainly been an issue. This may be have already been asked earlier in the thread, and my apologies if that is the case and I simply missed it, but how unlikely is it that a school that has already sent out invites will contact another round of applicants later in the process. Specifically (if this helps), I was burned by UConn, Drexel, Emory, and GSU.
Thanks so much and keep up the good work!

Question (as another assumed reject from UConn), did you actually receive something from them indicating your status? Or are you simply assuming because they have already extended interviews?

Cheers!

I am assuming because they already extended interviews and one person I met had received an invitation from my POI. Oh well.

Faculty are getting together today to discuss clinical ph.d. applicants amongst each other, according to a phone call I made up there a couple of weeks ago.

I got an email about a month ago outlining this:

- Invitations for interviews will be sent out via e-mail by February 9th
- The interview itself will be February 24th

good luck

Anyone else apply there on this forum besides me?

Also, anyone heard from Baylor University? Or is that the BU previously referred to in this thread? It wasn't on the "official list" on page 1...

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the previous mentions of "BU" refer to Boston University.

Thanks! I never received anything from them and was assuming a rejection for the same reasons but wanted to verify I had not missed some important piece of correspondence in my spam folder.

Totally off topic reply from me...but it's cool to see another Canadian!!! All the psych grad school hopefuls I know are only applying to schools in Canada so nobody seems to be sharing in the 'fun' of a lot of this craziness

Oh I know. At my university most of the honours students are taking a year off so there are only a handfull of us applying to the US. It's pretty crazy.

Why are the schools so quiet today!?! 😱

There were some but there wasn't much last monday either. I think schools meet today and then announce later in the week, or they meet mid-week and invite on Friday. I bet Friday will be hopping, which isn't good since I will actually be on an interview, lol, so the list will have to wait!

I applied there too (to UTexas Southwest). They have been very quiet. Maybe cause they're in a med school they operate a little differently. Good luck!

Good luck on the interview! And thanks again for keeping up with the list. 🙂

Is anyone else going to the NYU-Counseling interview on Friday?

Texas Woman's University has begun sending out interview invitations today for their Counseling Psych Ph.D program. I am one of the invitees! 🙂

The interview is on March 2nd with a student social the night before on the 1st.

I believe the interview for the Ph.D. School Psychology program at Teachers College is Feb. 19th and offers have been extended. They also extended interviews for their Ed.M. program in School Psychology and offered 3 dates starting at the end of Feb. The Ed.M. offer seems more like an orientation. This Ed.M. offer was made to applicants to the Masters Program as well as people who did not get into the Ph.D. program.

Hi everyone. Today was bitter sweet for me! I received a rejection letter from South Dakota in the mail, which is upsetting because it was one of my top choices. I also received an invite from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (PsyD). It looks like 53 invites went out for about 20 slots.

Does anyone have insight as to whether a morning or an afternoon interview might be better as far as admissions committees go??? I have a choice of 8am or 1pm and dates which extend from next Friday to March 9th. I have talked with students who have sat on medical school admissions committees and they have said that the begginning is typically more selective and they may chose someone at the end to fill remaining slots, making it less competitive. Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks! Good luck to all those still in the running for South Dakota, it is a great program!

would it be helpful to create an official rejection thread-- like a thread where we say we have received written confirmation that we have been rejected from a school so that others can see if they still have a chance? ie some people have received invitations, others rejections, but you have heard nothing so maybe there is still a chance?

I don't know, I think this thread handles that to an extent at least. Also, it is kind of a downer of a thread, lol. We can do it if you think it would be helpful, but it just seems depressing. This thread at least can be both depressing and encouraging.

i dunno, call me a masochist, but i kinda like the idea of a rejection thread.

I agree. I think for the most part people are announcing invites received and rejection letters as well so you can determine where you are with that school. A whole thread just for rejection letters would be quite depressing.🙁

It is encouraging to read threads about invites and see other peoples excitement so its not a total downer when you read about the rejections. Just my opinion!

I was Accepted to the University of Minnesota today - notified via snail mail about that and fellowships, etc. It's obviously a great school and I'm very interested in working with some of the people there, but for a few reasons I think it's likely that I'll decline this offer (99% sure).

oh you guys are pessimists ! 😛

I can see how it could be depressing to some though.

I'll list mine just in case it helps someone out or gives some hope to someone that hasn't heard anything yet- cuz you may be in the elusive second round!

I have received official rejections from U Georgia (email), U Illinois- Urbana Champaign (letter), U Michigan (letter), and U Virginia (letter).

Congrats hipinion, is that Clinical or a different Minnesota program. I know their quant has offers out, so I thought I should ask.

As for the rejection thread, if people want it...why not?

Damn it Damn it Damn it! ****... I was really hoping to get an invite from this school. I've heard nothing yet, but I figure, if I was in the running, they would have called or emailed right? Before sending out reject letters?

I don't know anything about the school, but the disaster psychology stream looked really really cool.

Has anyone else heard about South Dakota? More specifically, are there any interview offers?

Anyone heard from Central Michigan?

When are the interview dates for Loyola-Chicago?

Was the U Virginia letter for Curry or the other program?
Thanks! 🙂

Oh I love this thread so much. Somehow my impending year of nothingness is a little easier to take when I can read this thread and see that other people are waiting on the same things. lol

If we're listing rejections, so far my "official" rejection was from Nebraska and Alabama isn't inviting me for an interview but they're "keeping me on file" (whatever that means).

I may possibly die from a stress-induced seizure before Arizona contacts me. haha. It's so ironic that my last chance is also my top choice. I feel a rejection coming but I hope not because the research interest was such a perfect fit.

But, exciting news (okay not really but it's more exciting than rejections right now). I just faxed in my student membership application to APA. I've decided that if I'm really gonna have to spend a year not being a grad student, I'm going to go to the APA convention in San Francisco.

Has anyone heard from this school yet?

It's a tough call if your interests no longer match your POIs. As you wouldn't necesarily want to tell this to him/her straight up, but at the same time you wouldn't want to be kidding yourself about what you are really wanting to commit the next 5-6 of your life to.

On the other hand [and this sounds like your situation], if your interests have simply evolved/adapted, while still meshing with your POIs I think you should feel free to talk about your new interests. A deeper interest within the field should only impress your POI and not discourage him/her.

OK. South Dakota... Done with their invites 🙁

Hey, yes, clinical phd

I have received official rejections from U Michigan (letter).

When did you recieve this rejection, and what program were you applying for. I only ask because I applied there for the PhD program, and haven't heard anything yet.

I just checked their website, and on my application is says
"A decision has been made. Your program of application will inform you of the decision."
Do you think thats good or bad? I haven't heard anything from them yet. Now im nervous...:scared:

Anyone actually heard from Rutgers yet? Also anything from Northwestern (Evanston PhD)?

Sent out invites 1/30. Interview is 2/15-16.

Edited to add: this is for the PhD pgm.

I keep forgetting to add that I received a rejection letter a couple of weeks ago from Texas A&M University's Counseling Psychology PhD program.

I just received an invite for an interview with my POI at UNC-Greensboro 😀 . It was a personalized e-mail so don't fret if you've applied there and haven't received any notification yet.

Is anyone else interviewing at UNCG, and if so on what day. I was given an option of the 23rd or 26th. I had to pick Mon. the 26th because the prior week is going to be pretty hectic.

The U Virginia rejection was for the NON-curry one.

The Michigan rejection came in the mail today-- for the clinical phd program (check out the lovely new rejection thread, too!)

I received a recent invite from Drexel. So it appears that they are still in the invite process.

I know! I really thought I would at least get an interview as I fit rather well with the program and the disaster psychology portion. But, I guess they didn't see it that way! Well, hopefully you will not be receiving a rejection letter. Good Luck!

I've received official rejections from Yale, Northwestern (Evanston) and University of Colorado Boulder, all via e-mail. I agree this is depressing, but it may help some people!

How did you hear from Drexel? From professor or secretary?

not to beat a dead horse (even though that expression is incredibly gross and morbid), but if we haven't heard from UMass Boston at this point can we safely assume that we are out of the running? just curious...

Haha...I've been wondering the same thing--I think someone said in an earlier post that if we don't hear by Friday, we can take that as a clear sign??

lol...yeah, that was me who reported that...the ever-so-helpful person i spoke to last week said that if we haven't heard by the time of the first interview, then that's a surefire way of figuring out that we haven't gotten in...

it's just surprising so few people on this site have heard anything from there...

i was told that if you dont hear anything by 2/9..you can make an assumption..

but you never know..they have 2 interview dates and people may interview at the firstr one and then withdraw their apps...

i might also add that my POI didnt call me until sat night..so u never know!!

wow, and i mgiht also say that i WISH i could be as optimistic towards myself as i am with my friends and others..its so damn scary tho! 😱

I just got off the phone with the administrative assistant at Southern Miss and she said they are still reviewing apps and all invites will be extended by February 15th. That's "the goal" at least...

anonymousplease--would you mind sharing who your POI is?

I also applied to UT and have not heard anything. The waiting game is killing me. Good luck to you and hopefully we all will interview there.😳

I have been in contact with my POI via email for a couple months at UMass. So, getting the sinking feeling that I was not getting an interview, I asked her yesterday if she had already notified the students she was inviting for an interview. She told me yes. So, count me as rejected for UMass Boston.
