Hey there everyone! Figured I'd start this thread since I recently started preparing for the June 18th MCAT. For those of you who are taking the June 2nd MCAT, June 18th MCAT, or still considering one of those two dates, feel free to post here with any questions, comments, concerns, or support you have to offer!

Good luck to you all! Let's crush it.

Hi there,

I am currently registered for the April 23rd MCAT, but I do not know if I am prepared enough to take it. I have been studying slightly but not much, and now with only two months left, I am considering pushing the MCAT back to either May 20th or June 2nd. Knowing that I will be done with school, I will have little more time to review without any academic or other distractions; however, I will get my scores a month later, and primary applications are begin getting accepted at the beginning of June. I want to know if I would be putting myself at disadvantage by taking the MCAT at one of these later two dates considering that my primary application will not be fully complete until either mid to end of June to beginning of July. Any advice and input would be most helpful. Thank you.

MCAT>early application. Make sure you are prepared for the exam, it is exponentially more important than an early application. July is not late.

bingy95,
what did you not like about kaplan? I'm curious because I'm doing it now. Some of the online content is terrible, and I've actually been using Khan more. what was your impression of the practice tests vs the real deal, and how did scores compare?

I feel as if Kaplan missed the mark on a lot of the content. It was perhaps too comprehensive. The phys/chem questions on the actual exam were pretty basic. Also the Kaplan Practice tests were off the mark as well. The Kaplan Tests were unnecessarily difficult. My friends who got in this cycle DID NOT use Kaplan.
To be clear, I was short on time when studying so that definitely impacted my score but I would recommend using other resources. Hope that helps!

Hi everyone! I was originally set to take the test May 6th, but have rescheduled for June 2nd to give myself a bit more time to be better prepared! I'm in a Kaplan course but am somewhat disappointed at how little content review is offered as I mainly signed up for the course bc the last pre-req I took was over 5 years ago.

long time lurker checking in 🙂 Signed up for 6/18. Using Kaplan, TBR & Khan. Also taking biochem and physiology this semester. For those of you doing the Kaplan course, what are you guys doing to get the most out of it? I see myself using more of TBR and Khan, but want to still utilize Kaplan (beyond the FLs and AAMC materials) to its extent too. Thanks so much guys! Happy studying 🙂

Not sure if I want to keep this test date or not, I just took Kaplan full length #4 and got a score of 511 128/127/128/128.........full length's 1-3 were all 506 for me. Anyone else seeing this jump in scores with full length 4? I know of some others that did.....

Take it sooner, if you can!

Have you downloaded the Flash Card app? I think that is really going to come in handy and its included with the Kaplan course

Signed up for TPR course, heres to taking all 13 practice tests. Course starts 4/4, will be doing EK book questions / review until then

June 18th checking in. I am using Kaplan (1st ed of the 2015 mcat) and have the EK 8th edition. does anyone know if there is a big difference from the 8th edition of EK to the 9th for biology, chemistry and physics? would i still be ok studying those and studying my biochem from kaplan? also, what are y'alls thoughts on TPR psych? I'm thinking of purchasing it...

I have TPR psych/soc, and it seems very very thorough. My friend who didn't have a psychology or sociology background exclusively used that book to study, and scored in the 99th percentile, so I can only assume it's quite solid.

wow! Thats impressive! Thank you for your reply! TPR psych it is. lol

Checking in- June 18th!

I'm using parts of The Berkely Review, TPR and EK. Study schedule is a mix of a couple I liked and integrated into my work/school schedule! Good luck everyone!

Does anyone know where you can get more practice exams? I've used kaplan (but this was way back when) when i first started studying. And i recently took TPR (4) exams. Where's the real aamc scored exam? And anyone know where you can get lots of full lengths for cheap?

Word on the street says EK exams are great, you can buy em a la carte but def not cheap at 50 a pop. I heard Next Step is alright and more bank for buck at 25 a pop. I'm gonna be using mainly tpr but am thinking of supplementing some EK in there

June 18th, checking in. Following (mostly) NS 100 Days to Success plan (NOT MINE - I got it somewhere on this forum, but not sure where - Can someone reply with link to original post if you can find it? I'm new to online forums...) with EK, NS Practice and Strategy, and a few other things thrown in. Let's do this!

rescheduled test date to 6/18. Looks like to all the summer mcat test takers, this is a big test date ! 🙂

Is there anyway to create a group and purchase the exams for EK and we all use it ? we can chip in as a group, I have heard people have done it!!

Why would you need a throw away school?
You need to select at least one school to apply to on the primary app, and if you end up scoring poorly on the MCAT and having to postpone your application until next year, you don't want to be a reapplicant at any of the schools you apply to (because that decreases your chances of acceptance), so you want to make sure that the school you select this cycle isn't one that you'll want to apply to during a potential reapplication next year. So apply to a "throwaway" school this June, and then add the schools you actually want to apply to after receiving a satisfactory MCAT score.

So this throwaway school is primarily like top tier schools I'm assuming. Like harvard yale etc. Assuming the majority of individuals dont get in...

No, the complete opposite. You'll only complete that application if you get a poor MCAT score, so make it a low-tier school.

Okay so my mcat score isn't great right. But i plan to retake it and the scores wouldnt be released till july. When applying with my first exam score (i already have my score), when i submit my primary app in early june with the intent of retaking my mcat. I would apply to a low tier school? Why wouldnt i apply to a top tier school and just have my application verified without the worry of getting in or not into that top tier school? Is there sometjing I'm missing?

Applying to a top tier is just 100% throwing your money away. There's no chance of acceptance with a low MCAT, so why waste your time and money applying there? If you get a low score and need to take it a third time, you might as well still try to get accepted this cycle by following through with the 1 school you applied to in early June, so if you end up actually trying to get into that school, and that school alone, then you want to ensure that a mediocre MCAT score will give you a reasonable shot at acceptance.

Oh okay yeah yeah that makes more sense. I was just seeing it from the perspective of applying to the top tier school so my application gets verified. But assuming i do better on the next mcat then the ad coms will look at that and potentially give me a shot right? Is that right? Thanks for the advice!

Some schools only look at the most recent MCAT, while some schools look at all the scores you have. Either way, you'll have a better shot at getting accepted if you improve your score this June

By the way, what did you score the first time you took it?

Okay I have read through this thread and others, but I just want to make sure and have a direct explanation to my question.

I registered for the June 2nd exam. I know the application can be submitted the first week of June. Does anyone know specifically what date (not sure if this has been released yet). Are you guys going to do your app as you study for the MCAT or after you guys finish the exam? So basically when do you guys plan on submitting? You guys also plan on submitting the app to one school initially then adding schools after you get your score correct? How long does it take to get secondaries?

Basically I'm asking what exactly is the proper timeline in order to take the exam in June and apply early.

Thanks!

Also on a studying note, do you guys think a month of practice tests is enough? I plan on doing Berkeley Review and Khan questions until about the end of April, and then spending a month doing practice exams.

Checking in! Signed up for the June 18th date. I'm using EK, the 10wk study plan because I'm still in school, but was wondering what else is a good supplement? Or is EK along with FL exams enough?

I'm in the same boat and would like to know about this as well! I'm going to supplement with TPR.

I think you can submit the primary on June 2nd or 3rd. I'll be working on the app while studying for the MCAT over the next few months. I'm taking the June 18th exam, though, so in your case it might make sense to submit it after taking the MCAT, as long as you get get it in within a few days after testing. The amount of time it takes to get secondaries will depend on the school.

There's no specific amount of time of studying that will work for everyone, so no one can tell you if a month of practice tests is enough. The only indicator is what kind of practice scores you're getting.

Got it. Appreciate it. So you plan on submitting on June 3rd and waiting for your score which will be back around July 18th. Do you know when the earliest apps get verified and when do people usually submit secondaries to be as early as possible. Thanks.

Another predicament I'm in is the fact that I may possibly have a paper out for publication around mid to end of June which is after apps should be submitted to be early. Not sure how to update schools about this and if they'd care at that point.

Not sure exactly how long it takes to get verified. And not sure what to do about the publication, you might want to ask for advice about that from the adcoms on these forums.

Is there reliable data out yet that helps us convert the new MCAT scores into the old MCAT scores? I'm still a bit iffy on what these new scores translate to on the old scale.

Thanks

Decide on a throw-away school to apply to yet?

I have not, I applied to two one-year master's programs in biomedical sciences so depending on whether or not I am accepted into one of those will help me decide what schools I have an actual shot at and what schools are out of reach. I'm thinking MSUCOM since I'm a Michigan resident and its not even in my top 10 choices so I wouldn't be heartbroken over not applying the following year.

What do you guys use for verbal practice? I have the hyperlearning book from Princeton Review. Is that similar to the actual exam's passages? In those passages I'm stuck between getting 5 or 6 right out of 7. A rare 7/7. Trying to be more consistent.

Any other suggestions on the best verbal practice/how to improve?

493 TPR. Kill me. Highest in VR(124) and psych(125). I would have been better off guessing in B/S and P/S. ****. Length of test didn't even bother me, and I really felt decent about most of my answers. Time was only an issue on VR. Wtffffffffff

Edit: should also note that this is the TPR "Demo" FL. Probable serious score deflation on this but nonetheless disheartening. Time to kick it in gear.

Checking in for the June 2nd test day, retake from last year. First year applying and hopefully last time taking the MCAT! Kinda nervous about starting my content review/studying 2.5 months out (seems too short), but last time I studied for 3.5-4 months and experienced serious burnout, lost motivation. Fresh out of general physiology, genetics, micro, and social psych, so I'm hoping that helps as well! Using EK and Khan Academy exclusively this round and feeling pretty good about it. Anyone in the same boat?
Forgot to preface this post with "Someone please reassure me", haha
