Hey there everyone! Figured I'd start this thread since I recently started preparing for the June 18th MCAT. For those of you who are taking the June 2nd MCAT, June 18th MCAT, or still considering one of those two dates, feel free to post here with any questions, comments, concerns, or support you have to offer!

Good luck to you all! Let's crush it.

Took the AAMC unscored sample test today, and scored a 522! Feeling great! 🙂

My percentages were 92/91/85/95 for a total of 90.75%; all 3 conversion systems/formulas I found on SDN calculated 522 based on that percentage, so it's good to see that there's some consistency between the various conversion methods.

I still haven't touched the official guide or q-packs yet, so I'm planning to go through those before I take the scored AAMC FL during the week before June 18th. I feel like I may have gotten a bit lucky with this score, so I'm hoping that those extra ~1,500 practice questions in AAMC's MCAT prep bundle will make me less prone to a lot of variation when it's time for the real deal. Unfortunately, I'm on the quarter system, so I still have to worry about finals until June 9th haha :dead:

**** man, nice. You've always been scoring well though so that doesn't surprise me.

Oh okay, are you applying this cycle? You took the scored pretty early! But that gives you lots of time to review it 🙂

And do you mean the really hard, new AAMC section banks? or the old AAMC question packs?
Yeah, I'm applying this cycle. I took it this early because I saw that I was doing better on the practice sections (EK). So I just went ahead and took it to see where I stand AAMC-wise... I rescheduled because I was scoring so low and didn't think I'd be able to improve as much as I want to for the real thing. I hope this makes any sense lol

With an MCAT like that, you don't have a thing in the world you should be worrying about my friend.

So on all the section banks, the majority of the questions I missed were about question 65 and beyond, and I feel that fatigue could have played a part in this, considering I didn't take a break after question 50. Did anyone else get this as well?

Debating whether to buy NS1-4 (really 2-4 since I already used the free 1) or EK 4 (and 2)... Anyone have any advice? I like getting a scaled score by NS, but worry that I'm just doing this because the other EK tests have kicked my butt so far lol.

Well since each section on the real thing is only 59 questions, you should be okay. Did you simulate test conditions and take a break?

I took like a 5 minute break after question 70...I know I should have taken a solid break after like 60, but I wanted to keep going . Lol by the end I just wanted to be done.
I'm taking the scored tmmrw and praying that I do well, so I can have a confidence boost going into Thursday!

If you want a confidence boost I vote NS, if you want a challenge I vote EK. Also 4 NS exams for the price of 2 EK exams is more bang for your buck

If you have the funds do both though. More practice can't hurt!

@walloobi great progress 🙂 if I remember correctly you've been practicing with EK? Did the unscored feel a lot nicer in comparison?

Thanks my friend! Yep, I've taken EK 1, 2, and 3. Averaged 72-73 on those, and the unscored felt a lot more straightforward. One of the biggest factors was probably that I was able to finish the sections a lot faster on this one. I had 30 mins left on the clock after finishing the psych/soc section that I used to review my answers, and I wasn't under much time pressure on C/P which is usually a problem for me. Definitely didn't feel like I got a 90% though, so my score might be a bit flukey haha

I didn't exactly simulate test conditions, but I definitely missed more towards the end. On both B/B and P/S I found myself trying to figure out how much more I had left around question 55, and things kind of went downhill from there.

Next time have a study day and then have a solid practice test day and start early in the morning with breakfast

Exactly! I just wanted it to end, and I felt like I answered some of the later ones without really thinking it through. I'm worried about C/P though- I'm kinda hoping its calculation heavy as opposed to the section bank craziness haha

My hope is that AAMC somehow forgets to put C/P on the exam haha.

Finished the AAMC Unscored yesteday percentages as follows

C/P: 73%
Verbal: 91%
Biology: 76%
Psych/Soc: 81%

I definitely think I can do better on C/P because I felt really sleepy during that section that zoned a bit up in the remaining sections...then again I hate C/P so......

Dont really know what to make of those percentages. Gonna review my exam and take the scored tomorrow.

I'm currently spending my days going over the content lists and making sure that no point, no matter how small, doesn't make total sense. People have been saying how these last few test administrations have tested minor points on the content list. Don't get surprised by anything!

Iz_FtB do you want to start a tag game? Where you ask a concept out from the content list and we try to do our best to talk about it then continue discussing the concepts...I think it can open up some weak points for all of us.

That's predicted to be a 514, with a narrow range of 513-516, looks like you're in good shape!

Currently doing the scored, the scored CARS had quite a few interesting topics. But I felt as though the questions were a bit more complex and time consuming, definitely was rushed for time in the last three passages :/ not looking forward to seeing that score lol

Definitely agreeing with the consensus that there was a lot I had to guess between two on

At the halfway point of NS FL2. Damn the C/P really destroyed me, and i kept thinking about those passages during the CARS (which had some really boring passages). At least this will be good practice? ugh. Dreading seeing my score...

You'd be surprised at how you do, I felt the same after finishing C/P and CARS and was dreading the second half of the test, and ended up with 127s all across the board - not great, not horrible... but good practice regardless.

SPOILER FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T TAKEN NS FL2- I got kind of angry at the question on circular acceleration because EK explicitly said it's not on the new MCAT, so I was really thrown by that and wasted a ton of time trying to remember any equation that could help me. I also found that on multiple calculations that I did where I felt pretty confident in what I was doing, I ended up with a totally wrong number and had to go based solely on units which made me feel pretty nervous. :/ But yeah, on the first one I was thinking "if i feel this way on the real thing, i'll void it" and then ended up doing well, so hopefully this will be another instance of that (but I doubt it!). Nice job with your score, that's a solid score for the NS tests.

Anyone planning to relax and do something fun this Memorial Day? Or are most of you staying in to study?

100% studying, sadly. I also have a genetics exam the day after so no room for lake shananagins (not sure if that's just a MI thing or what but it tends to be quite fun around here)

SEROTONIN is an inhibitory neurotransmitter – which means that it does not stimulate the brain. Adequate amounts of serotonin are necessary for a stable mood and to balance any excessive excitatory (stimulating) neurotransmitter firing in the brain. If you use stimulant medications or caffeine in your daily regimen – it can cause a depletion of serotonin over time. Serotonin also regulates many other processes such as carbohydrate cravings, sleep cycle, pain control and appropriate digestion. Low serotonin levels are also associated with decreased immune system function

DOPAMINE is a special neurotransmitter because it is considered to be both excitatory and inhibitory. Dopamine helps with depression as well as focus, which you will read about in the excitatory section.

DOPAMINE is our main focus neurotransmitter. When dopamine is either elevated or low – we can have focus issues such as not remembering where we put our keys, forgetting what a paragraph said when we just finished reading it or simply daydreaming and not being able to stay on task. Dopamine is also responsible for our drive or desire to get things done – or motivation. Stimulants such as medications for ADD/ADHD and caffeine cause dopamine to be pushed into the synapse so that focus is improved. Unfortunately, stimulating dopamine consistently can cause a depletion of dopamine over time.

SPOILERS FROM NS4
Can someone explain the difference between:
Gender Dysphoria vs. Androgyny?
From what i understand, dysphoria is the behavior portion (stress) while androgyny is the physical portion (male + female parts) but I'm not so sure

Nice score!

Did you do the Section Bank questions? And if so, how do you think they compare in terms of difficulties? After doing both I feel that the Section Bank questions are a lot tougher than the Scored FL.

Thanks! Nope, this is the only AAMC material I've used so far actually.

How do you guys deal with random info questions? On the section bank I believe there was a passage question that required the student to know that all adipose cells have the same nuclear activation receptors for a certain fat gene or something along that line (as you can see I still have no idea). I never learned that in school or in the prep books I have. The people that are scoring 515+, do you guys just already know those answers or do you just guess well on those kind of questions?

Praise Zeus. Just finished NS FL2 and got a 508: 126/128/126/128. No clue what happened on B/B as I felt really strong about that section. Starting to feel a bit more confident (I'd be extremely happy with a 508 on the real thing) that maybe I can actually hit my goal since most of my practice tests have been around here. 🙂

I feel very meh about my scored, just finished. Hoping I can raise it up a bit, I have no idea how I did the best in P/S because I've always done poorly with those terms.
Updated scored:

Kap diag: 487
Kap 1: 497
Kap 2: 502
Kap 3: 502
Kap 4: 506
AAMC unscored: 64% /87%/ 75% / 76%
Calculated to 511(?¿)

AAMC scored: 126(69%ouch)/126(75%ouchhh)/128(80%)/129(86%)
509

Hoping to bump those C/P and CARS sections up a point each by test day

Good job! Are you going to focus on reviewing electricity concepts, since previous tests seem to really test that?

Thank you! Yes most definitely! I have noticed a commonality in the subjects I struggle with that are always on AAMC stuff and that is definitely one of them! Along with memorizing my AA's and their effects. I'm gonna do the section bank next and hopefully(upon review) I pick up a lot of the concepts that are reoccurring for me!

Also it seems according to that one study on here that my increase from Kaplan to AAMC was the smallest possible, not sure if that's due to sampling bias or Kaplan readjusting their scores but I was definitely hoping for more of a 5-10pt increase not 3 lol

:clap:What did you get on the scored FL?
Haven't taken it yet! So far my EK tests were both around 65% (hard to scale), NS FL1 was 512, and unscored translated to around a 508. Was considering using the scored today, but since I'm testing June 18th I want to review high yield stuff this week before taking it! Thanks for the cheers. 🙂

I Think that's a pretty solid score. C/P is a section that you can probably increase by at least 1 pt just by reviewing high yield stuff, and the CARS is just a crap shoot IMO based on the passages and your interests. I wouldn't get too down about it, just focus on what you missed and have confidence that if you get a 509 that's still a really good score. 🙂

Thank you very much 🙂 I guess you're right! Obviously I spend too much time on here too automatically get down on myself about a 509 haha. I guess the name of the game is grind out some high yield stuff until test day to aim for improvement and at the very least hope it doesn't go down. Thanks for the confidence booster!

I completely agree from what I've seen CARS is the ultimate crap shoot lol

Hey guys! *Spoiler for scored FL* But could someone help me with this question on the chem/phys section?
Only 4 more days till were free!!

EDIT: I was wrong hopefully someone else can explain it better lol I personally wanted to label to O on the OH of the carboxylic acid so idk

EDITED EDIT: actually I'll give this a shot. So the it's a substitution reaction where the ethanol attacks the carbonyl Carbon. The O attacks the C and the C forms 4 separate bonds by breaking the double bond with the carbonyl oxygen. Now the carbonyl oxygen has a negative charge and in order to stabilize it the carbon wants to reform that double bond so it kicks off the best leaving group the OH and the ethanol O stays. So if you label it you'll see that the newly formed molecule has the labeled O and thus can deduce that the carboxylic acid lost its OH group. Someone else might be able to explain this better haah sorry I'm not an orgo expert.
