**Official Maryland Class of 2021 Interview/Acceptance Thread**

NicoPresto what date did you interview? Have you also heard negative things about the school?

I interviewed 1/17. And yes, I have. I work with a few Maryland dental graduates who have dissuaded me from going. I also know firsthand that the area around the school is unsafe and requires utmost vigilance. I also know that the campus security will not drive you home after a certain hour so if you're stuck at the lib past say 11pm then you need to find alternate ways of going home that don't involve walking alone. I know that out of state tuition is quite expensive and matches most out of state rates. And I also happen to know that being a Maryland resident I am tired of being in Baltimore. The city "awesomeness" does get old. You can explore the entire city and Fed Hill bars in a day and it gets boring week after week. Not to mention that finding a cheap house with covered parking that won't leave you susceptible to broken windows or slashed tires or stolen vehicles is HARD to find. Parking spots in apartments are $150+ a month

If my opinion was only based off of the interview then that's a biased opinion because the school and administration and student guides for the day only show you the best of what there is. They tell you there at the interview that they are trying to sell themselves as a school program to you. So..... I'd rather hear what actual students that aren't pressured have to say

That's why you talk to a multitude of students during the interview day.

Thanks for the response. This thread is making me kinda nervous. I am instate too. If it was between UMD or Temple which would you pick?

So some dental graduates told you something, is that not "here-say" or "alternative facts" as you put it?

If you go on the website, you can see that police van escorts are offered until 1 am, and walking escorts are 24/7 (http://www.umaryland.edu/publicsafety/escort-services/)

Tuition isn't something isolated just to Maryland, so even though that's a negative it can't really be attributed as negative aspect of the school itself.

You know you're not forced to stay in Baltimore, right? Take a trip to DC or something, there's plenty to do outside of Baltimore that's still relatively close by.

I feel like we're beating the corpse of a horse that's been long dead. Everything ultimately comes back to location. So if being in Baltimore is something you really don't like, it'll be hard to convince you otherwise and you'll always have that distaste for the school because of it.

Let it go "doctor" d00m.

Already let go. I just hope I won't be as bitter as you in 3 years

Btw, name dropping me earlier..real classy. I figured out who you are, but you won't see me stooping to that level

You don't know me but your threat isn't well received either. Go back to the sandbox to bully someone else. For someone who has "already" let it go you still seem to be on some warpath. I hope you receive your DDS one day so your "doctor" name on here is actually legitimate. Personally I don't want to visit a future doctor that lies about letting go of grudges.

"Btw"... I've gotten several PM's from different members saying they've heard similar things about Maryland based off what I said and know that the things I'm saying are general complaints. Take what you will from that.

Name dropping or not the adcoms at Maryland check here and know who each of you constant posters are based on what you post about yourselves and what groups you are a part of. Thanks for confirming that your name actually was what I thought it was 😛:=|:-)::biglove:

See, everything you say comes off as combative. Did I ever say anything to threaten you? I just said I have enough decency in me to keep some information private even if I find it out. You're the one that keeps reviving the thread after a long period of no messages, so who's really on the warpath? If you didn't know, my username is based on a fictional comic character so step down from your condescending tone, I'm not trying to pretend I AM one.

Personally, I wouldn't want to visit someone like you either

So who's threatening who?

Doesn't change the fact that you dropped his real name like that on SDN.

Not cool man

Could those people please post in this general thread for the benefit of all applicants?

Finally caught up on this thread...

I appreciate everyone's passion when discussing experiences and viewpoints, it's really eye opening. I think we should all keep in mind that you should choose the school that you see yourself being happy in for the duration of your study, a place where you see yourself thriving and bettering yourself. hopefuldent6789 touched on it way back when, but at the end of the day, regardless of which school you choose to go to, you will become a dentist and nobody is going to ask why you didn't go to school A over school B. Go where you fit best!

So some dental graduates told you something, is that not "here-say" or "alternative facts" as you put it?
No because I work with them. I didn't meet them on a public Reddit style forum

If you go on the website, you can see that police van escorts are offered until 1 am, and walking escorts are 24/7 (http://www.umaryland.edu/publicsafety/escort-services/)
Walking escorts aren't available to walk you miles away and they have a perimeter at which they cease to walk with you

Ok....

You know you're not forced to stay in Baltimore, right? Take a trip to DC or something, there's plenty to do outside of Baltimore that's still relatively close by.
The school is in Baltimore, Murderland my friend. You will be spending a bunch of time near the school. You are really really offended by this aren't you? Wow! Next.....

I feel like we're beating the corpse of a horse that's been long dead. Everything ultimately comes back to location. So if being in Baltimore is something you really don't like, it'll be hard to convince you otherwise and you'll always have that distaste for the school because of it.
Location is very important but you're in denial. So good luck until you come here and see the light of the situation. You will be the first to complain I bet.

I guess he totally trolled us when he said he's going to Maryland lmao.

Just because he decides to respond on a forum doesn't make him a troll. He still probably receives all the lively BS updates from this one and who would blame him for wanting to join in the fun? It's not like anyone is answering pertinent questions here about the school because they're all still crying about how Maryland actually has some negatives to it to go along with the positives. It's like educating your kids on good vs evil. Yes children, even at Maryland, it exists.......

That's why you talk to a multitude of students during the interview day.

Yeah talk to all the interview day students they all give you the same cheery I LOVE MARYLAND ITS THE GREATEST IM SO LUCKY IM GONNA GET MATCHED SO QUICK AND WE ARE ALL FRIENDS AND FAMILY HERE schpeel they're trained to give. Good for you for being so gullible though

Already let go. I just hope I won't be as bitter as you in 3 years

You don't need 3 years... you already are. Quit being so blown since you heard Maryland has some aspects that aren't agreeable.

I think a lot of this is about perspective. At any school, there will be issues, yes, but it's how you approach it that matters.

I want to quote some wisdom that I remember my friend, the legendary dental student, @LaughingGas wrote in thread about Tips to the Class of 2020.

Lab/projects: get them done ASAP, but don't work when everybody is working on the project (if 10 people are waiting to use a machine, you are wasting your time).

How is this relevant?

I interpreted his quote to be about more than just lab. It's about perspective. There will be difficulties up ahead. But look and see where you can advance forward instead of getting trapped in a bottleneck.

In his case, it's about a machine limitation...so he decides instead to go and find another project to do in that time. That kind of mindset....of relentlessly attacking from all sides is, I think, key to a lot of problems that one may encounter.

Anyways, I just wanted to share that. Hope it helps.

Sorry, I didn't realize having some pride in where I'm going is the same as being bitter. My mistake. I realize Baltimore isn't the best, but unlike you I'm not hell-bent on trashing the school because of it

Save it. He isn't worth holding a conversation with

Ah, the classic "if he doesn't agree with you, what he says doesn't matter" argument

If you're already accepted and put your deposits down, then just roll with the punches. You get upset a little too easily about things that are out of your control. Hope you mentioned this as a weakness in your interview because dental school is a lot of criticism left and right and if you can't process it all without popping off then good luck

I graduated back in May, so I don't have the luxury of still being in school like you. I feel like my brain is turning into mush more and more as each day passes

August can't come fast enough

Sir I think you need to find a hobby because like you said, your brain is turning to mush, and SDN is contributing to that. Just because someone offers a different viewpoint on a situation doesn't mean they are "trashing" it. It's like buying a car. Some like it and others don't. Just move on and take it for what it is and stop wrongfully calling the negative opinion "bashing" and "trashing".[/QUOTE]

I've already taken the downsides of the school into account, and still decided to go there. Contrary to what you might think, I don't have this "Maryland is the best dental school in the world, and there's nothing wrong with it" viewpoint. I know all its faults, and I have accepted them for what they are

So no, I don't get upset too easily because you assumed you shattered whatever precious image of the school I had (which I never did). And yes, I will roll with the punches when I need to

Considering you've posted just as much on this topic the last day or two, I would recommend the same for you. You can share your different viewpoints without all the condescension and snarkiness, trying to say everyone else's opposing viewpoint is invalid. And taking that other post I made as something for fun that has no context with this doesn't make your point any more valid

This is the last I'll post on this subject, because it's honestly getting old. So like @hopefuldent6789 said, let's just let it go

lol please calm down it was a joke that flew completely over your head (sorry.. 🙁). Incis0r and I are as close as you can get to the term "friends on SDN," he knows I don't think he's a troll and I didn't even say he was one.

I'm very neutral in this conversation, by the way. I'm lucky to have a lot of resources to look to when finding out about the quality of Maryland so I don't need to rely on SDN for that.

Most schools actually don't do that. I was surprised how brutally honest students were at all the interviews I've been at. The only schools where I felt the students were artificially hyping up their school was Pittsburgh and Nova. Was pretty difficult to get those students to say anything negative about their school. A lot of other schools told me about the issues of getting a chair in clinic, issues with getting patients, not being able to graduate early, administrative issues, etc.

Not every pre-dent on SDN is stupid, it'd be best not to assume as much.

Well he was offended.

You need to work on understanding true condescension and snarkiness. These are two qualities which are not connoted in the slightest in any of my writings on this forum.

That's funny because in my interview a few kids said the Maryland interview day reminded them of their time at their NOVA interview. But you have all those resources so I'm sure you can figure it out for yourself without me having to put forth a viewpoint. Since you haven't interviewed at Maryland yet though I suggest you heed what I'm saying

Well yes, it would be stupid to just ignore the information presented here, I just want to get a viewpoint from every resource possible!

I have an idea, let's all say some positive things about the topics discussed here. Positive only! I'm not making light of any of the disagreements here, nor am I poking fun, I promise. My experiences with the school are limited, so I will do my best:

1. The crabcakes in Baltimore are amazing. Crime shmime, but the crabcakes.....
2. The paper quality of the school's official correspondence is phenomenal. Seriously. Not sure how many of you folks here are connoisseurs of fine stationery, but I have to say that I was impressed.
3. Wegmans.

See? Not so hard.
Anyone else want to try?

1. Crabcakes don't help you pass a micro exam
2. Every school can afford nice paper
3. The closest Wegmans locations are about 35-40 min drives. Did I miss something?

Baltimore is a great tourist-y city don't get me wrong but like someone said earlier, that all gets very old. It's not like D.C. or Philly or NYC where something new is always happening.

I can attest to the fact that Maryland and Nova have similar interview day styles based on one of my classmates who I just asked for clarification. They want you to feel welcomed so they only show you the best of everything. It's not a bad strategy

I don't think Nova and Maryland had similar interview days...at all. Two completely different ends of the spectrum if you ask me. If we are comparing interviews days based solely on feeling welcomed by the school then you're considering them all to be the same because you should hopefully feel welcomed at any interview.

Back to the whole point of this forum WHEN are the next round of acceptances going out? It sounds like a few other schools are sending rejections or waitlist today so does that mean expect Maryland the end of the week?

Also if I interviewed 1/17 can I expect to be in the dark til March

You can expect them to go out when they go out. No one here works for admissions, so no one will be able to give you an exact date. Every school and every cycle is different so it's hard to say when the next batch will be for Maryland specifically

The point of this thread is not to predict when acceptances are given out, nor to theorize whether or not you'll get one based on when you interviewed, but rather to share to others when you ACTUALLY receive them

If the waiting game doesn't seem appealing, I suggest finding a hobby to keep you busy in the meantime
