Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

YES! I was the wombat on Saturday. I also decided that day that the name of that shift is stupid for many reasons, so I am renaming it the Ninja shift. Doesn't that sound cooler?😎

I remember you saying that. obviously I was the med student on then. I still want to know how they came up with "wombat." My resident told me I was horrible for what I thought "wombat" referred to; I thought it was a fat (but not hairy) kid on the service.

No fat children were harmed in the making of that shift name. It was last years chief residents' poor excuse for humor. I think cause we have the St. Bernard shift as well they thought they should stick with animal names. I am not sure why wombat though - they seem kinda slow and not very interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wombat

Anyone know how to turn off the "Sucks" mode on my PDA?

Anyone heard anything on the Mayo-phoenix anesthesiology program? I wonder how it will rate from a resident's perspective.

Anyone know how to turn off the "Sucks" mode on my PDA?

Yes. It varied from PDA to PDA and sometimes requires you to use a dime or a screwdriver to set the function. You can find the directions cleverly hidden under the heading, "Remove the battery."

The vet just told my mom she thinks our last remaining cat has breast cancer. My mom's treating her with Abx for a week to r/o infection, but apparently, the cat has hard masses with ulcerations at each mammary gland. Seriously, this is lame... even though she's the demon cat, sounds like we're going to lose 4 cats in <1yr.

I am so sorry. It is hard to lose even the demon cats.

I'm very sorry, Ashers. I've learned quickly how even a demon cat can make you fall in love with them.

We should totally write a set of behavior rules that our demon cats have inspired. I'll start.

1. The existence of other cats in the household is not, in fact, an error on the part of the Servants and howling will not result in their removal.

So I asked my parents to send me baby pictures to figure out what to put in the yearbook. They sent me a weird selection. One probably just because my dad thought it was hilarious. I'm thinking none of these will make the cut.

awesome rocking horse!!! I have mine, somewhere.

How is everybody doin' on their 4th year schedules? I've been working on mine, on and off, for maybe 3.5 hrs total, and I've only got 310 "ranks" to show for it. I'm about ready to pith myself with the pencil sitting next to the computer out of frustration and uncertainty over whether I'm doing this right.

310 as you've ranked 310 or you ranked 31? I've ranked about 45. This sucks. I just took off all my away electives, so the list would've been longer, but I figure I could just add them on later, switch electives etc for them.

Sorry, ranked 31. (52 now) I've only made it through ranking the anesthesiology options I want for the beginning of the year, and the required courses. Still have to put on some surgical sub-I backups, and then I can do electives.

As of right now, i have no surg-sub I back ups. stupid ortho. I've also got a bunch of electives and integrated selectives listed. I thought last night I was just about done.

Haven't even started. Is that a bad thing?

Not really, it shows that you have better things to do with your time. I can do it for you if you do not mind!

Done and done. Have it back on my desk by Friday.

Splat, I'm bummed that Forensic Path only takes one student per month. I think it would have been fun to take with you. We would have been like a made-for-TV crime-solving duo. I could have played the straight man to your wisecracking yet street smart sleuth.

It took me about 30 minutes or so to work on my lottery, but I still have to enter it into Oasis. Worked it out on excel first. I have just over 100 ranks, but I'm only working with 4 months, so I listed a crapload of electives I would be okay with taking. The rest of my schedule is aways, vacation, research, and pfi.

I thrive on planning and organizing, so I've rather enjoyed making my list.

hehehe... awesome news story.

Horse thwarts Hawaii hospital's visitation rules
Animal rides elevator to drop in on patient before security stops it

LIHUE, Hawaii - A man hoping to cheer up an ailing relative at Wilcox Memorial Hospital hadn't considered one of the visitation rules: No horses allowed.

The man thought the patient would enjoy seeing his stallion, said Lani Yukimura, a spokeswoman at the hospital. He and the horse entered the hospital earlier this month and rode an elevator up to the third floor, where they were met and stopped by security personnel.

Security managed to get the man and the horse out of the hospital, with "just a few scuff marks," she said...

Yeah, they said they do allow certain pets to visit patients but for some reason horses aren't on the list.

do i also get to be eerily disturbed/tormented by inner demons like Riggs in Lethal Weapon? Would totally make it a very true story then.

Your inner demons must be confused, because don't you torment them?

hey! one of our own is the author of the article on the front page. i just noticed.

which front page?

not that i'm aware of. didn't know he made the that website either that his name links to.

So 2009ers, what will your schedule look like if you get everything you want in the lottery? Mine will hopefully be:

J - SICU
A - Anesthesia Sub-I
S - Anesthesia Research
O - Master Clinician
N - Vacation
D - Ambulatory Medicine
J - Vacation
F - FM Sub-I Columbia
M - Forensic Pathology
A - Vacation
M - PFI

Seniors, please chime in if you see any potential badness with this...not that I'm expecting to get everything I want in the order I want it, anyway.

No, I think he used to lurk occasionally, but hasn't really followed them recently. He and I were on the same teams for both months of surgery.
You'd think the guy who wrote the "SDN" guide to getting into med school would post here now and then.

He wrote the guide before having any association with the site, then was approached by the head of SDN.

Guy also has about 80 gajillion small children. We can probably float him a pass on engaging in our reindeer games, methinks.

oh, wow, you weren't kidding. I'd glanced at the Names & Faces book when this discussion started and thought I saw that he has 2 boys. He does....and 3 girls. And that was as of a year and a half ago. Wow.

SICU will obviously be useful for anesthesia but I think it's a fairly brutal month and I'm pretty sure you will be required to do it during your transitional year. Also, make sure to doublecheck with a resident or someone when the peak interview season will be for you and try to do vacation then (i.e. if it's December and January, you may want to do ambulatory in November) because although ambulatory is more lenient than other rotations about letting you go to interviews, they will be irked if you want to do eight that month.

Here's my schedule if all goes according to plan:

June - Ortho Sub-I
July - Ortho Research
August - MICU (fulfilling inpatient medicine) (also ranked neph)
September - Away Ortho (possibly Madison)
October - Family Med Sub-I at St Marys
November - Integrated selective - I'd be okay with any I ranked😛ain management, infectious disease in Racine, Women's Health, Sleep med, Trauma anesthesia
December - vacation
January - vacation
February - vacation
March - I ranked a plethora of electives. Top ones are derm, endocrin-metabolism, radiology
April - international elective in Belize
May - PFI

Here goes nothing!

BTW, the AOA residency info thingy tonight was great. Thanks m4s!

Keep in mind your away rotation will be too late to get a letter of recommendation. It will still be good as an "audition" rotation in the program, and interviewers other places will ask you about it. August would work for both maybe though.

S: Nodular Fever elective
O: Inpatient Phrenology
N: Circumcision Sub-I
D: Vacation

lol...ortho... complete quackery

You may mock nodular fever but, according to our lectures, it occurs in 5-94% of people who live near the moon.

I can't believe you're wasting your time that way. You're taking Ortho and completely neglecting Therapeutic Touch--the touchless touching!

I had a friend who read palms. She read mine then refused to tell me what she saw. yikes

My ideal 😉

August -- Anesthesia sub-i
Sept -- Peds sub-i
Oct -- derm HI
Nov -- vacation
Dec -- ambulatory
Jan -- vacation
