Touche. But, in my defense, I didn't realize we were counting Satan's spawn as a vehicle.

And this is what should be done to all Azteks.

I rented one once in California. I thought maybe driving it would make up for the external ugliness, but it didn't. It has an obstruction in the rear window, dumb a/c vents, and it just wasn't a good car to drive. I think I sat really low in it, even though it's a big car. The cool thing about it was the tent inside that I saw on commercials.

I had to call Avis at one point, and a guy I talked to asked what it was like to drive, he wanted to know if driving it made up for being ugly, too, and I had to tell him, no.

I think I should count my blessings for having awesome teams and attendings for all of medicine and surgery. And even me, who loathes internal medicine, had a fairly good time.

Sorry Splat.

Thanks to whomever sent me the Hug via pager today. You'll be happy to know I was in the middle of drawing blood on a patient and actually having fun. I got about 3 separate pages in rapid succession for some reason (Xandie, Funk, and mystery hugger) right when I was doing the draw. You're all dang lucky I'm not jumpy, or I could have missed my stick.

I love most of you. The rest just haven't renewed your subscriptions.

My page was work related... but I'll take the love anyway!

So who would you recommend for an advisor - Dr. Rao or Dr. Vetter?

Anne in the ortho department recommended either those two or Dr. Ninomya, but Ashers, I know you've got him.

Anne in the ortho department recommended either those two or Dr. Ninomya, but Ashers, I know you've got him.

My friend who went to ortho had Dr. Rao as his advisor. He said he was nice and a good advisor, but after his interviews and stuff, he said that he shouldn't've listened to some of his advice. Dr. Rao convinced him to apply to fewer programs, and less lower tiered programs. I don't know his exact Step 1 score, but I know it was really good, and I know he didn't do extremely well M1 and M2 year. His letter of rec from Schmeling also wasn't the best, and he might as well not've written one (he didn't say anything bad though), he said that Schmeling just said, "This student did well on the rotation."

He got 7 interviews, ranked all 7, got his last choice.

Edit: Can't advisors advise more than one person? I'd assume they can. The only thing with Ninomiya is that he'll probably also have Scott and Josh since we worked with him. You might want to email him and see... he's really cool... he wears galoshes into surgery. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend Rao, since Brock said he was good.

Yes, they can. Mine had 6 at one point, but I didn't pick a Urology specific adviser. I picked someone I knew and trusted, because he's a straight shooter.

A good adviser is important, but you have to take everything everyone (including me) tells you with a grain of salt. Take what they tell you, do your research, and then form your own opinion of what to do based on your situation.

You can also have as many "informal" advisers as you want. For me, these tended to be the most important.

Thanks for the advice Ashers and donnyfuego. Yeah, I assumed that Ninomiya can have multiple, but I figured he's probably got multiple advisees already d/t research. I'll be talking to him anyway cuz I'm planning on doing a research month next summer before residency apps.

I was thinking that Vetter might be good for recommended stuff specifically for females in ortho. I dunno. I also want someone who can advise on aways, where to apply, and will be realistic. And I think I've heard Rao is good before, but I don't remember where/when I heard that.

I hope I'll get my peds schedule soon so I can schedule an appt.

What kind of timeline are we supposed to be on for selecting an advisor? This is the first I've heard of it.

You have to select one by the end of January or February or some such. Talk to the chair/PD for your department, and they'll let you know who usually advises students in your discipline. I like using the PD as your advisor, since the chair will write you your chair letter, and then your advisor will (usually) write you a letter, and both of them read lots and lots of letters of rec so they know what a good one sounds like.

Plus, PD's know what they like to see in a residency applicant, which is really the main focus of your life by that time.

I'm only working on it right now cuz it's ortho.

and I wanna do a sub-I in June

I'm so excited about this paperweight I'm think I'm going to go buy an Apple notebook computer to celebrate.

BOO! Everyone's getting MacBooks.

Congrats on the paperweight though. Did Karen decorate and sign it for you? 😉

borrowed from another thread....

There's this girl in my class who was completely obnoxious. She'd come to school dressed in basically lingerie, then she'd have a grocery bag full of food that she'd hit people in the back of the heads with as she walked into class late, then she'd rummage through it for her food. Her food didn't generally smell bad, but she was highly annoying and distracting.

This other girl sat near me, and she'd eat cucumbers. I can't stand the smell of cucumbers.
is that the same girl that left a wheeled backpack out in the aisles? sounds like the same sort of personality

things that happened to me today:

1) threatened by a restrained patient that managed to tuck a dinner knife into the wristcuff of his restraint and later whipped it out to scare me.

and that's really all that's worth mentioning.

you see, stuff like this is why...i actually STAY in med school.

said patient was transferred somewhere "safe."

he was in fact taken there by a certain Prowler's ambulance company, and he should tell his coworkers there they need to cheer up, cause they were grumpy SOBs.

any notable physical characteristics?

and based on the contracts the aforementioned company has, I know where they were coming from

Grrrr, this day is sucking. Last Friday my resident took off before I could ask him what was up for Monday, since it's Columbus Day and the VA pretty much shuts down for any reason they can think of. My intern said she would page me this weekend and let me know if I had to come in. No pages all weekend, so I wake up on this morning and figure I'll just head down to the VA around 8 to make sure nothing is going on. As I'm heading out the door at 7:30 I check my pager and find out that my intern did indeed page me (at 10:00 last night after I was in bed) to say that I should be at conference at Froedtert at 7:00. ****! I dash off and, of course, get stuck in major traffic - not that I would have made it by the end of the conference anyway. I finally get to Froedtert and sure enough they are already gone from the conference room, so I start heading over to the VA while paging the 4th year on my team (whose pager number is the only one I know) to find out what's going on. He pages me back 5 minutes later as I'm getting off on Miller Park Way to say that we have a surgery case at Froedtert this morning, for WTF reason I have no idea, so now I'm all the way back at Froedtert, twiddling my thumbs until surgery at 10:30.

Sorry, that story was probably lame to read, but I just had to vent at how much this day has sucked so far. I went from potentially having an awesome day off with only having to be in for a meeting at 3:30, to being stuck here all day. AND, I didn't have a chance to let my dog out before I left the house, which means I will probably be coming home to a nice pile of doodoo on the carpet. Rarrrr!

PS: if anyone wants to swing by the library and loan me a couple bucks for some food, that would be great. I forgot my wallet at home and didn't eat breakfast this morning. That should make surgery an interesting experience.

Andy, are you on CPR or your elective?

By the way, the VA being closed makes me a happy camper, since I'm at home on the couch. Good times.

ENT elective. Apparently nobody missed me at conference this AM, so I think I'm in the clear there, at least.

You are not helping my mood. I wanna be at home on the couch! Waaaaa!

You're a junior, I'm a senior... call the waaaaambulance.

Your time will come, my friend... poor Donnyfuego is on his medicine sub-I.

one was an incredibly good looking woman with olive skin and dark wavy hair, probably Greek. She looked like all she had to do was swap her uniform out for an evening gown and she'd be all set. couldn't have been older than 24. Wheew!

The other was a portly fellow with near-white hair, thick glasses, and smelled of mothballs. Massive Milwaukee tumor action.

Didn't even realize it was a holiday until someone told me at 8pm that there was no mail. Columbus gets no respect.

and Yeah!!!! I have my sub-I in ortho set up for June. Just have to stop by the registrar and remove my plastics elective that is currently taking up space. Anne in ortho is awesome.

Sweet! I hope to have my sub-I in july. Did you get an advisor yet?

I'm pretty excited that I don't have to fight the lottery system. I hope you get your July sub-I. Don't know what service specifically it'll be on, but Anne contacted the registrar's office and told them that I get to do a sub-I in ortho. I'll really have to bust my butt that month. Not only is it a sub-I for what I wanna do, but also there are 3 JMSs scheduled for an ortho elective that month unless they switch out I think.

Haven't decided on my advisor yet. I was hoping to get my peds schedule this week before I call.

BTW, love the cat video.

okay, you're probably thinking of a different ambulance company. I'm quite sure that no one of that description works there, lolz.

The other was a portly fellow with near-white hair, thick glasses, and smelled of mothballs. Massive Milwaukee tumor action.
That's more like it....although the only guys with near-white hair are on the slimmer side. We've got a few 300+ pounders, but their hair is all pretty dark....

of course, I started in November '04, and the new hires are getting employee numbers that are about 400 higher than mine. New people alllll the time.

yeah, i'm either thinking of a different ambulance company, or I made up those descriptions. not sure which. but the lady did give me her number.

A-basin opened today in Colorado!!! Only 1 run, but still yet... I want to go snowboarding. I just don't want it to snow here.

Sweet.

I interview at U of Colorado on Nov 19th, with a whole weekend before that to enjoy myself in the mountains!!!

a classmate just mentioned A-basin to me today. I really want to go out west this year...

another new experience today: gangrene smells HORRIBLE.

try a month of vascular surgery at the VA. the worst wound i saw was chronic osteomyelitis of the tibia festering since WWII. ~8cm long and half-way through the bone. that was the first time all month (saw it the last day) i thought i was going to vomit.

you win!

yeah. it's been stable for the last 50 years - continuously deteriorating, but not causing systemic infection. he's old and some baseline dementia. him and his family declined surgical intervention. he was in the er d/t some increased pain and fluid drainage. in the end, it was kinda bogus. but nonetheless impressive to see. on x-ray, it was just a big gaping hole in his tibia.

Holy monkey. So what's it growing? TB? I thought you were kidding about since WWII.

dunno. he and his family didn't want an amp. we sent him on his merry way. end of story.

seriously since WWII. incredibly disgusting.
