Being able to see everyone's thoughts about the bad questions on the test lends itself much better to open discourse about the test material. Yeah, after they received over 200 complaints for 50 questions. I guess they didn't want to waste trees. I'm usually entertained by the forums.
 
I always look stuff up and question myself a hundred times before posting in the challenge forum. I really don't want to look stupid. I probably have though (I mean besides the average daily stupidity).

Like challenging something when it's been said repeatedly in class.

Might be time to check out the path forum and see what kind of craziness is going on. I'd love to see how they can explain how the infamous pancreatic cancer "painless jaundice" suddenly morphed into "jaundice with abdominal pain." I mean, is it me, or has painless jaundice for pancreatic cancer been stuffed into our heads more than the idea we shouldn't sleep with our patients? For all I know, it might have even been a Carvin' Marvin "Phrase o' the Day."

So some of us are going to turn board review into a drinking game tomorrow. I haven't gotten the details yet, but I know we're doing lung phys and path. Could get interesting. I'll let y'all know if it's a good study method.

However, a power hour is planned afterwards.

Awesome. It appears that the long-awaited showdown between the administration and the students over the availability and use of old exams is ready to begin.

My two cents: the administration is doing us a great disservice by eliminating the availability of ANY practice questions or exams in certain classes (pharm for example). I found that I learn more by doing a ton of questions in classes like path and biochem than by simply memorizing the concepts presented in lecture. It's one thing to passively hear something and quite another to apply it to a situation/question. If they want to ban old exams in most classes that's all well and good, but they should get off their rear ends and develop some practice questions that can guide us in our studies.

So there you go. It seems the administration is quite ready to label anyone who finds this rule unnecessary/overly constricting to be unprofessional. I, on the other hand, find the unnecessary restriction of educational materials (that are questions that are almost sure not to be repeated on current exams) to be a limitation on my education. Is that a professional thing to do?

thank God the USMLE has made sure there is no possible way of us ever getting ahold of any practice type question for the boards...old actual questions or review books or otherwise. any type of practice questions for boards would also be highly professional. oh, wait... there's about a million of the damned things out there.

seriously guys, I'm gonna f-ing lose it. i can't take this crap anymore. i hate med school with a raw, burning passion.

Honestly. I read through that e-mail (I assume all M2s got it, right?) and I was amazed at how insulting the administration can be to us. Assuming that because some members of our class overlook the old test policy (which, other than pharm has never really been spelled out to us officially) in an effort to learn the material really well using all available resources that we are going to go out and defraud the government, abuse prescription rights, punch babies, etc. is just ridiculous.

That being said, I think enough is enough. They only listen to us when we speak in numbers, and I think this is something that directly impacts how much education we actually get out of this program. I've heard no compelling argument on their end of things for why these old tests should be banned (and the new tests certainly aren't pulling questions directly from the old exams from what I've heard) and I think most of us who used old exams last year while they were sanctioned would argue that it was a great educational resource. We need to stand up for our right to get the most education as we can out of this gawdawfully expensive endeavor. If they refuse us access to old exams, then as I said, force professors to write a not insignificant amount of practice questions or useful learning objectives for each lecture. You know, instead of the really vague and overarching learning objectives they include now that essentially tell students they need to memorize everything in the lecture as presented to us.

I hate to incite civil disobedience here, but this is ridiculous. The school is coming up on their recertification and they really need to foster a more open dialogue with us as far as the usefulness of various learning tools. Last year I felt like they listened to us for the most part, but this year they are far too quick to dismiss us out of hand and label us unprofessional. Treatment like that is going to breed nothing but contempt for the medical hierarchy and is unlikely to entice any of us to join academic medicine or contribute alumni funds to the school.

I don't know what to do.

On my way home from school today, I was about to get to an intersection and the light turned yellow before I got to it.

So I accelerated lightly to get through, but it turned red when I was about 4/5 of the way through the intersection.

I'm POSITIVE this was very unprofessional of me, and that I will soon become the type of doctor that is cutting corners with patients to get done with them sooner...you know, skipping things like x-rays, sutures, controlling bleeding, giving pain relief, maybe "forgetting" they are in the waiting room...

I can't believe i'm going to be THAT kind of doctor. Wow.

Yeah, then you'll wake me up in the middle of the night for something that's minor when you've diagnosed it as a compound fracture, when all it was, was a bug bite.

I love it how our class is filled with whiners! I didn't even have time to look at the exam they posted online before the test. I don't think even 90% of the class has old exams like he seems to think.


Side note: I want to put in my ortho elective!!!! I hope I get it! Stupid oasis.

That's right -- by the time we're actually practicing, people will have invented thought transmitters. So you'll just sit at the ER (because the range won't be fully developed yet), and you'll beam your thoughts to a nurse to page me. Unless thinking that is too much work because you'll be focused on playing Xbox and winning against every kid that comes into the ER.

(I almost said "beating every kid," but that sounded wrong.)

i heard that the problem that is keeping the elective lottery system down is because one too many people tried to sign up for the ortho elective.

Ashleigh, I think more people have the exams than you might think. Probably not 90%, but I'm guessing maybe ~50%.

I'm sorry, I don't really see it as cheating. None of the questions are repeated, except for Devo and CTB, but that's just laziness. If they wanted to start using the same exam, then don't let us keep them. And honestly, the only way the old exams help you do better is to quiz yourself to see what you know and what you don't know. You could still forget something/screw it up on the actual exam. Whatever. When it was mentioned the first day, I really didn't take it seriously. I figure whatever's not sequestered is fair game, as long as I don't give it to people outside of our school. But what do I know. I apparently have poor morals and ethics and am likely to committ fraud in the future.

BTW, I parked my car outside the front doors for an hour and a half today. HA!

I just gave the 90% figure because of what it said in the email:
"I shared this with Dr. Haldemann and also added that I estimated about 90% or more of our class is using old exams in some way or another."

Personally I never cared if anyone has exams or not. I know people who have them and completely rely on them and some that have them and don't touch them.

I guess someone who does such things would be a Ho-Ho ho. I can't find any of the cartoons from the intro sequence to Elf though. A more scandalous version of Zooey Daschenel might be a good look for the Ho-Ho ho.

They also have those chocolate cookie striped things for a quarter there... good times.

Also, I think that it is important to note that there is a store on 78th and Capitol that sells "Ho-made sausage". Possibly the best sign ever.

Sounds like the VA is a great place... can I do OB/Gyn there? I think that'd be awesome. There have to be some female vets around.
 
my patient at the VA today would disagree about the food. said it was pretty good, until they stopped salting and seasoning it because of his problems.

reminds me of the large number of EMTs at the Wisconsin EMS conference a few years ago that openly admitted (by standing when asked) if they had ever used the bathroom in a patient's house when responding to a 911 call.
