Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm taking it on 7 June. I really wanted to schedule it for D-Day, so I could beat it down like the Germans were, but I figured Thursday would be better.

i don't know my WWII history really well, but is it safe to say the Germans really got the beatdown, or just safer to say the Allies "just passed?" What kind of Step 1 score would they get for taking Normandy?

D-Day we invaded the continent -- necessary for victory in Europe. Basically the Germans were caught by surprise. I think Hitler was taking a nap, and wouldn't be awakened (seriously).

...geek...😛

I try to be a little slimmer than Don... I've got enough issues under the coat in the general region of the pockets without adding more to it.

I tend to wear a heavily laden coat, but I use everything I carry. There are others in our class who carry next to nothing.

Whew. Is that part of an on-the-record H&P, or did you just have to write that up as a separate report? I'm scared of having to be able to do that next year...especially the part where you find literature to back up what you're saying. MIM didn't really do much for my horrible literature searching skills.

And the answer to all of your literature search problems? UpToDate and MD-consult. Don might have other ideas, but those two are KEY to me. UTD can be used on campus and in the hospitals, but you can get MD consult at home. Good times.

UTD is absolutely key for this sort of thing. DynaMed is okay, as is InfoRetriever. Try the Evidence Based Medicine page on the library "Clinical Resources" page. This is something we can go over when we get together. (By the way, Xandie, we should talk about this thing).

Only during OB, medicine and peds (Don can correct me if you need it for surgery). You do have a lot of busy work though... PBL during family, community health project during family, etc. All in all, it's still better than first and second year, I swear. 🙂

Surgery is generally pretty easy on the H&P's. You still have to do 16 of them, but often the residents will sign off on them for you, and (even better), they are shorter and more problem focused (and the residents may not give them more than a glance before they sign). The exception to the rule here is the CT (cardidothoracic) surgery service, where your H&P's are tied to your evaluation, and they want ~1/2-3/4 page discussion on a pertinent topic (angina, CHF, lung CA, etc).

And OMFG this is still so much better than the basic science years.

me three!... if it's cool with Don/Xandie (cuz they don't know me)...

😕 Who is this guy?😉

Sure. As far as I'm concerned, everyone is welcome.

You mean the breast fondling?

👍 (mayo)

Talk away, honey bunny. What falsehoods should we dispense to the poor, defenseless newbies?

I first assisted on the first part of a prostatectomy today (dissection down to the endopelvic fascia). 👍 Then the attending came to the room, and I was demoted to retractor/suture cutter. But still, I got to bovie (electrocauterize) stuff!!

I'm thinking good resources for H&P's, how to read labs, how to write a soap note, how to present patients to attendings, what to do when you pre-round, where the good food is, where the good hiding places are. Stuff like that, and generally sort of a Q&A session. BTW, I'm going to be on OB in June, but I figure I'll be able to find a night off somewhere.

We'll make it happen. At worst, your schedule will be q5. Not too bad. And you're off non-call weekend days. And you're out at 3 on Fridays if you're not on call.

I'll be q4, right?

First, thanks for the green light on the 3rd year info meeting thing. Second, I was just curious if either of you have decided on which area of medicine you'll be entering, or if you both are still making up your minds?

(And yes marcus aurelius, I'm still "around" my friend...)

We're both entering the "nether" areas of medicine, if you will. I'm going into OB/GYN and I'm pretty sure Don is going into urology... correct me if I'm wrong, of course, Don.

Also important: Location of single-seater bathrooms where you can take a dump in privacy.

I think we just need a new post to revive the thread after Gimlet's little comment there.

I think it's a valid point. I'll show you the ones at the VA next Thursday.

What, you would rather braid your TP with someone in the stall next to you?

Splat could set up a stand selling braided TP outside of bathrooms to those who enter, as a way to subsidize med school. Kinda like one of those attendants who hand people towels and get a tip. "TP braid?"

Yes, this is probably 95% true. I need to do the ER elective this summer to make my final decision on that (after all, I started med school with the intention of being an ER doc), but barring any soul shaking revelations, I'm headed to the same body region as Xandie, but with different intentions (I would say something about the sex of my patents, but female urology is a hot field these days).

I think it's a valid point. I'll show you the ones at the VA next Thursday.

There is a particular little gem on the 7th floor near the physicians work room.

I was just up there! Where were you, Mr. Urology Elective?

Can you explain this? I'm curious as to what women are presenting with...is it mostly kidney stuff, or lower in the urinary tract?

i'm gonna go with overactive bladder and perhaps also the unrelenting desire of women to pee standing up.

heh, both of which interest me, following EM. we'll see....

It's a pretty wide area, and is actually a subspecialty of urology. It covers things from female urologic symptoms, such as stress incontinence (women affected 3:1 more than men), and the increased frequency of UTIs, but also includes things like female sexual dysfunction (although there is overlap with OB here, which has the uro-gyn service).

I'm at Froedtert for the rest of the month. More fact time with the attendings.

I know you meant "face" time, so I'll let that go.

I was supposed to go out of town this weekend, but my flights got cancelled due to the weather on the East coast. 🙁

Also, I have this year's matchlist, if anyone wants it.

Um, yeah... face time.

It's getting to be worth it though. I spent some time with the Vice Chair today on rounds 👍 .

Real men (or women) don't use automated defib. 😛

just to be clear, I am, of course, kidding.

i use a regular household current rigged up to metal spoons.

Our sheriff's department at home had these nifty tiny AEDs...they were about the size of one of those old pencil boxes kids would keep all their school supplies in...about 8 inches wide by 5 or 6 inches tall. Then it became apparent that many of them had serious defects and the company went under, and any owners of said defibs were out the money because there was no company to return them too.

man, that sucks.

Yes, please. I'd like it.

Metal sporks would be better.

Taco Bell.

I think I spotted The Prowler. 😱

Indeed. The 'fro is too much to miss. 😛

Glad you flagged me down though - it was good talking to you.

anybody want to study respiratory phys for me? didn't you guys say that Forster likes to ask questions that nobody seems to know anything about? 😳

Hey Don? Marc and I managed to spend a few hours together today (alone, mind you), and there was no mayo spillage. What's your excuse now?

though I did lose control of my noodle at one point.

Spring break is no excuse to slack on these threads, kids. How am I supposed to entertain myself between crazy patients?
