Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The end of days are nigh. Repent, and dowse yourselves in olanzapine (would hate to have tardive dyskinesia at the time of judgment, after all!)

So with any reference to Alex P. Keaton on the pharm test, I crossed it off and wrote in Marty McFly or McFly.

-5 points for manipulating test material without consent. It's copyrighted, you know.

Is that why you started laughing during the test?

Yeah. Pretty much. And some of the questions I thought "huh, this is funny. Those words sound familiar, but did I really learn this?" Then on the scratch paper thing I wrote my "Just for fun -- Drugs I've been on this block" list -- maybe I'll get some sympathy points. 😉

 The Family Ties reference threw me off for a second, because I kept picturing '80s era Michael J. Fox and was picturing him a lot younger than 45 years old. Not that it changed my answer or anything. It's too bad they gave away the Parkinson's diagnosis in the question...it would have given those of us in the know a little advantage.

you mean those of you too busy watching television to know Parkinson's based on a description of symptoms alone? 😉

I am slightly annoyed the basal ganglia wasn't on the test, since I finally understood it for the first time in my life.

I didn't see the word "Parkinson's" until the 2nd time I read through the question, I had gone through and underlined the symptoms, then I saw that, and was like "Oh, whoops, guess I didn't really need to diagnose the person."

With Marty McFly, I just pictured him in Back to the Future II as his older self, so I thought that was better than Alex P. Keaton. As you guys can tell, I spent more time analyzing the person in the question than the question.

very pretty song.

very pretty girl.

very creepy video.

but you're a better person for understanding the basal ganglia now. I bet you scored major points with heaven!!!! or at least me. I think you rock! But also partially cause you gave me candy.

I don't get it. Someone explain this video to me.

That parkinsons question totally threw me. I skipped it and went back. First, the Keaton thing, then I wasn't sure of the best answer even.

I don't want to study. I've only gone through 1/3 of the lectures, haven't done anything yet today, and I just don't care. Ugh. I better go to Starbucks so I can concentrate.

Or maybe I'll just wing it tomorrow.

On the plus side, my dog and I had a very pleasant 50 minute walk this afternoon. It's nice out. Enjoy it because it's supposed to be extremely unseasonably cold the rest of the week.

A bird just ran into my window right in front of my face. That'll wake you up.

Who loves the chocolate?

April, you might want to make sure your dog isn't around if you watch this cartoon in case it scare it like one of the other toons i posted.

Seriously. Would it be so hard for them to just make one of these damned "pick a drug based on the vignette" questions clear-cut for once? The guy's fairly young, so I start thinking DA agonist (supposed to save l-dopa for old folks who can't deal with confusion). Then I read further and realize that cogwheel rigidity and postural instability might indicate that his disease is already advanced enough to go straight to l-dopa. Then I add in the fact that he is working and probably doesn't want to lose his job, so he probably wants the sure bet of l-dopa over the "maybe it will work, maybe not" and possible psychosis of DA agonist treatment.

Dammit, I want old confused folks with all sorts of hypokinesia. Is that so much to ask for?

This background check for the VA is unbelievable. Does this come with a top-secret clearance as well?

I received three separate emails, from three different people last week about some key I have to pick up for my psych rotation🙂barf🙂, talk about bureaucracy.

You just went through my exact thought process. I ended up going with the DA agonist because I had trouble coming up with a 2nd reason for levodopa. But in my answer that if the DA agonist doesn't work, then I'd go straight to levodopa. 45 years old vs. difficulty w/ symptoms. Crap, I dunno.

Wow. Y'all are smarter than I.

 My second reason for levodopa was such a load of BS...

Seriously. I think I said something like "it's 100% effective for all Parkinson's patients, which may help Mr. Keaton continue working longer." Such crap. I should have just started spouting off about how great L-dopa would be for him if he worked with heavy machinery or how I just like saying Levodopa better than bromocriptine. All about as valid.

I love how in those "give x reasons for your decision" questions they always ask for x+1 reasons to do something, with x being the number of things actually discussed in lecture. That really makes me think creatively, which is why I'm in medicine. :barf:

by the way, the answer to the l-dopa vs. direct agonist question was neither. you were supposed do nothing because the patient stole your girlfriend in high school.

But I didn't have a girlfriend in high school...

Conclusion: There is no right answer.

I hate school so much right now. Why didn't I just become a computer programmer like I planned when I was a junior in high school?

You're just not thinking fourth dimensionally.

i shoulda stuck with wanting to be a farmer. i think that was in 3rd grade. freshman year of college: snack cake delivery truck (aka Hostess delivery truck) driver.

Ooh! Ooh! I wanna play!

3rd grade: Author
7th grade: Paleontologist (like the dude from Jurassic Park)
9th grade: Something that would make me a lot of $ (doctor, lawyer, park ranger)
12th grade: Doctor (mostly because I didn't like the other guys in my class that wanted to go into the field and I can be competitive with asses)
College: Doctor, though I very nearly switched my English Lit minor to a major to become a Lit professor when I thought my grades weren't going to be up to the challenge--damn organic.
MS2: Paleontologist

If we're gonna go that far back, I need to add.

As a kid - didn't give a ****. Looking back, I really didn't have any aspirations.
6th grade - Marine biologist
7th grade to 11th grade - computer programmer/systems analyst
12th grade - athletic trainer
College - athletic trainer
5th year of college - hhhmmmm... don't want to do masters for athletic training to just end up with crappy hours and only $35,000/year to show for my hard work. I know! I'll add a few science courses, take the mcat, and apply for med school. You don't have to do a thesis for that.
M2 - veterinarian

I'm not very committal to anything. 🙁

Crap! How could I forget? Every option in my list up to about 12th grade was my backup plan in case the NBA went bankrupt before I went pro. I was convinced until at least my junior year of HS that I was going to be the next Larry Bird/Charles Barkley. Then I realized I was a white guy that, while tall for normal folks, is actually somewhat short for the NBA and have a nonexistent vertical. So now I have to be content with playing Mormon-ball with some of our classmates once a week.

Little known Funky fact: I actually declared myself eligible for the 2000 NBA draft. Too bad my roommates at the time were the only ones around to hear me.

eh, I've actually wanted to be a doctor since about junior high, and I've never really seriously considered anything since. I am really exhausted though, but because I'm so chivalrous, I dropped my wife off at work rather than have her drop me off at school so she wouldn't have to walk in the rain, but rather than going right to school, I came back home. NAP TIME!

Chivalry is exhausting.

Oooh.. my "What I want to be when I grow up History"
4 years old -- doctor (don't remember it, but I found something from preschool where I said it)
5 years old -2nd grade: paleontologist
2nd-9th grade: marine biologist with focus in working with Shamu/dolphins/other cetaceans
9th grade thru frosh year college -- biology research Ph.D stuff, just not related to medicine
soph year college -- international business (changed my major to German/Spanish)
jr year college -- biology research/micro emphasis
1st sr year college -- marine bio/considering medicine
2nd sr year college -- medicine with maybe considering doing immunology stuff between college and med school (that didn't work)
now -- marine bio/paleontology/professional bum scuba diving a lot

i've come to terms with something that's always been in the back of my mind since starting med school, and I will now accept it: I want to be a pathologist. And I specifically want to specialize in pathology of the kidney and reproductive organs. Nephrotic and Nephritic disorders titillate me in a way nothing else can.

You and me both, brotha! Maybe we can start a private path clinic together!

Update: New low in my medical school exam scores established today! Thanks Dr. Becker!!! 🙄

yeah. not a new low for me, but ouch. thank goodness this stuff has little relevance to my future specialty choice.

Not quite my med schoo low, definitely my new low this year, but very close to it. I didn't miss a Becker question, but I did miss most of the stupid female reproductive crap questions. Stupid ovaries.

Usually I don't let this stuff get to me, but right now I'm so angry I could punch babies. I just looked up one of the questions I missed (the calcium oxalate one for those in the know) and it wasn't covered in the notes or coop, and I'm sure he didn't mention it in passing looking at the other options. Oh no, it was on a random table in Robbins. Even more frustrating, the question wasn't even about the most common cause of these stones, oh no, it was like the 4th or 5th most common reason for them (that just happens to be the most common reason for magnesium stones so no one would just guess it from looking). 😡

Yup, new low here too. Low for all of the 2 years as well. I actually thought I did much better than that. 🙁

My grade was much higher on the old exams too.

i punched three babies so you and akpete don't have to.

off to the old folks home to rip off some fingernails!

ouch. got a 92, huh?

😛

sorry to hear, gang. I'm pretty sure my block 1 neuro score made sure I won't score any lower ever again.

Oh, and if anyone sees him, tell DrOwen that he needs to run a little faster when there are semi trucks barreling down Watertown Plank. I just about saw a smear on the pavement.

Yeah, not so much on the 92. Thanks for putting things into perspective though. Getting broadsided by a Path runaway train with Becker as the engineer is far preferable to getting creamed by a semi-truck.

I got a 52 on an exam once... my best friend got a 40 or something. It was first year, I think. We both passed the class, easily.

Umm... I have the flu and I'm miserable. Just thought I'd share.

Also, I'm going for a walk. Who wants to come?

Also, I'm going for a walk. Who wants to come?

I just got back from a walk 30 minutes ago. And holy cow, did my dog need a bath afterwards.

Good Lord, what did she (I think your dog is a she) do?

I wonder how well Mokey or Buddha would take to going on a walk with a leash... probably not well.

Ya know how the rain water collects along the curb? Well, Bryn insisted on walking in the water the whole 50 minutes. That or the muddy grass alongside the sidewalk. Her belly was soaked and dirty.

Tell me about Mokey and Buddha.

I'm pretty sure Becker hates medical students.

The good (great?) news is that you all never, ever, have to deal with him again (except for maybe a question or two on the final).

The other good news is that you kids are now a mere three months away from being bright eyed, bushy tailed, brand spanking new JMS's.

Most of you, at least. Sorry Prowler. But at least you get the summer off.

Hey, that makes me feel a bit better. I got a 55 once in gen chem 2, but it was the last regular exam, and I could drop one, so I didn't really study for it. And he made it really hard (seriously, who makes freshmen derive the Henderson-Hasselbach equation?).

And I got a 47 on an organic 2 exam, but ended up with an A- regardless.

Mokey and Buddha are my kitties... I posted a picture of Mokey somewhere around here. Mokey just turned 4, Buddha just turned 6, and I got them both as kittens. They are super protective of me and it's super cute. Gah, I'm such a mom.

Here they are!

Nice pic! They're pretty cute. I don't have a current photo of my dog. I should do something about that. Tomorrow maybe. Right now I'm drinking beer and eating penne rosa w/ shrimp from Noodles. It needs all my focus. 🙂

I would like to get a 2nd dog so my dog would have someone else to play with, but I can't imagine doubling the vet bill every year.
