I think it's a good idea to always have a passport on hand. In case you, ya know, need to get out of the country quickly for some reason...preferably to a country without an extradition treaty with the US. :meanie:
 
I've only been to 10 countries (counting Puerto Rico, because honestly, it's not the US). I feel ashamed!

However, it is 86 degrees *in my apartment* right now and I feel like I'm back in Australia... if only it was dry heat.

The study topic of the day: graft patency in CABG: why the IMA spanks SVG. I wonder if Dr. Almassi will appreciate my creative titling? Probably not.

Although he did claim to be teasing me one day. Except that it was in the form of criticizing me for not shaving that morning. He cracked a slight smile then, but I suspect he was just devising incredibly arcane pimp questions to ask me in the OR later.

Did you hear (did I post somewhere else, for example) that there's no resident on CT next month? Just me, Brandon, and Dr. Marla. Dr. Wizorek is there sometimes, when there's something "interesting" going on. How did I end up with such a beautiful pseudo-subI? Good lord.

So you guys will sort of run the service. Just hope the NP's don't take vacation. I'm pretty sure the service would implode if it wasn't for them.

Kinda sucks, too, 'cause you hide behing JMS ignorance as easily at this point.
(Sorry, rising M3's. That's not a jab at you. It is in fact one of the best things about being a JMS. You're not expected to know everything.)

At the beginning, you're not expected to know anything... well, not really anything, but really, the stuff you're expected to know is pretty minimal. That's why reading is sooo key. It's awesome to know things, especially when you're not expected to know them.

Hey Don, did you happen to get a book for CT? Lawrence is crap on thoracotomy/CABG, and I feel like some good reading is in order. And yes, I still have your medicine books and will return them when we get together--maybe for our little "teach the newbie M3s some stuff" session, unless you need them before hand. I'm happy to give them to Patrick, who I see a couple of times a week, if you want them stat. 😛

Side note, I just wrote the most beautiful 400 word discussion on left main disease. Six sources. Watch out, Dr. Almassi.

Don't need the medicine books stat, whenever is fine.

Hurst's The Heart (free at Access Medicine) is good, but is more cardiology focused. There are a couple of books (each one is a two volume monster) in the CT resident room that I used for reference as well. All supplemented with a healthy dose of UpToDate. I didn't look at Lawrence for CT at all.

As Sina said, a day without Wizorek is a good day.
He's just a grumpy bugger, but not the worst resident I've had (that honor goes to a second year surgery resident).
Don't let him figure out that you didn't read the patient's H&P pre-op. Oops.
 
Hey everyone.

Thanks for the info on the geriatrics rotation!

I know the 4 corner states, and vaguely remember being taught that in elementary school.

I recall 3 family vacations in my life. My 2 youngest brothers were not born yet for the first two, and then they didn't get to go on the other trip (cuz of $$).

I have a passport because I went to Costa Rica for high school Spanish club. Hopefully I'll get to go to Germany in the next couple years. My cousin is marrying a guy from there, and the summer after they get married, there's gonna be a party in Germany. (Wedding's here, don't know when d/t Homeland Security).

Bonus: My mom's dating a pilot.

I'm extremely behind on my studying schedule. 🙁 I was at home from May 17 til today. I had scheduled some days off for the partying I went home for, but forgot about high school graduation this past Saturday, and ended up going to grad parties with my mom for 2 days. Those were supposed to be my micro studying days. Didn't get anything done today either. 4 hour drive back, then cleaning my apartment. Before I left 2 weeks ago, parts of my ceiling fell down and was fixed while I was gone. So I had to put all my stuff away today and clean up all the dirt and dust the workers left behind. I'm thinking they cut the drywall sections right here in the apartment. Filthy.

Oh for the love...I knew what the 4 corners states were! And I'm well aware of the purported existence of the Chupacabra and his goat-killing ways. That's a Mexican thing, anyway, not west coast. Jeez, next thing we know you guys will probably try to claim that we've never even seen a jackalope or something.

Yeah, you should definitely get a passport (make sure your wife has one too, lest you find yourself in my prior predicament). It was all resolved though - I'm posting from a hostel on Lambeth Walk in London. It's pretty amazing to walk out of a train station and be staring at Parliament and Big Ben. The "underground" here is pretty awesome. I am completely jealous. I didn't sleep at all on our flight over, so until I took a nap this afternoon, I felt like a surgery resident or something.

I want to be in London. =( One of my best friends is getting married on 30 June. One of the days in June I couldn't go, since all the other Saturdays in June that I told him I could come were taken. =( Sadness. He told me if I were a guy, I'd be his best man.

Hoorah for speed rounds... I was done at work this morning before 9 am. That's lovely.

Now I'm writing a discussion on "The undiagnosed pleural effusion"... complete with interpretive dance, as requested by Dr. Tisol (I have to figure out how to work that in at the end). My other discussion for him, "The solitary pulmonary nodule", had haikus at the end, again as requested. I pretty much think he's fabulous.

You guys are soooo close to third year. You'll all do great on boards, and I'm sending happy/smart vibes your way. 🙂

If anyone is looking to bolster their confidence, I would recommend taking NBME form 2. I took it today, and was very happy with my correlated score...hopefully it will hold true. Now I just can't let myself get a big head about it and slack off the rest of the week.

I feel ya man. I took form 3 yesterday and was pretty happy. But today was a waste.
 
I thought the video was funny. I even was laughing out loud. I just didn't post. Sorry.

I'm so tired. I was supposed to do questions all day today and take an NBME tomorrow. I haven't gotten anything done. My cousin and a friend were in town this weekend, and I think I'm getting old. Went out Fri and Sat nights, and I'm just exhaused. Probably gonna postpone the NBME a few days.

Yep yep... that was one of the first carcinogen links made. Once they started actually bathing, the incidence of CA went down. That was in the lecture by one of the Jimmy Stewart sounding pathologists. I guess technically the other Jimmy Stewart sounding guy was an endocrinologist. Wasn't the dude who described it Pott who also described Pott's disease?

If only I get tested on my random knowledge, the boards would be great and fun.

Edit: However, I didn't realize that the autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease presenting as infants and later kids "also termed infantile polycystic kidney dz" in an 8 year old were the same disease. I thought they were 2 separate AR diseases.
 
Dammit, we had actually already learned that? Must've been one of the lectures I didn't listen to or attend.

Has anyone noticed that Dr. Sebastian is in one of the pictures that cycles through the top of MCW's homepage? I also can spot Dr. Dunning in one (he's who let me into med school!) and maybe Dr. Lough in another.

It was early in block 2... like 10 October or something. The only reason I remember is because it was a lecture I had to miss and listen to online. I missed it because I had an optomotrist appointment after pathology went and ruined my eyes, and I needed to get glasses.

If it makes you feel any better, it was basically at the start of the lecture, as an interesting fact type thing. There were slides on it, but not tested on. (Yeah, I looked at all the slides before the final.)
 
Damn gunners! I found the path final to be more exciting by not studying any of the old stuff and flying by the seat of my pants.

I baked a coffee cake the night before because I didn't want to study. I figured I should at least look at the notes once before the test. I probably did just as well as I would've had I not studied at all.

Wow, that brings me back. The English version was a hit at the time, too. The lip-synching is so bad they probably didn't need to bother to re-shoot for the English video. Or maybe they did and that's why she's so listless. It is pretty sad when the keyboard artist is better-synched than the vocalist.

I liked Dunning. Was he your interviewer? He seemed like he actually likes teaching us stuff. But he sure likes going by Marshall B. Dunning III, PhD, Director of this that and the other thing.

Yep. Easy interview, too. I think we talked about hunting most of the time. He's a really cool guy. I contacted him for advice when my sister had a pneumothorax last December and he took time out of his schedule to explain some things to me.
 
Goljan's HY notes say that OCPs are protective against gonorrhea, but not chlamydia. Anybody know the mech. behind that?
