Hey Don and Xandie, do you guys have any tips on "operation etiquette" type stuff? I've been in a few C-sections and gyn surgeries, and I think I'm doing alright with them, but I find myself second-guessing when it's appropriate for me to grab the suction or a lap sponge to help clear a bloody field and whatnot. I think I've pretty much figured out when I need to be ready to cut or tag sutures, but if you guys could share any hints you've picked up along the way it would be much appreciated.
 
My general advice in the OR is to not touch anything until someone asks you to... honestly, yes, they'd be impressed if you suctioned appropriately, but they'll be pissed if you lap something that shouldn't be lapped... and cutting sutures if you're not supposed is rather naughty. It takes a long time to really understand when you should do stuff in the OR. Don't feel bad if they have to keep telling you what to do. That's what they're supposed to do.

we are, except that when you do that for a standardized patient, they'll only offer up SOME information, wasting time in the 12 minute encounter you're allotted, and you get points off for not asking all the specific questions on their list cuz you asked in a different, open-end way.

I hate OSCEs.

Good news is that I did well on my EKG test. And I was a maven. I dedicate my EKG exam to Xandie. 👍

Now to motivate myself for the next week to pretty up 4 progress notes from outpatient to turn in and study for the medicine shelf exam on the 31st.

One more week of August, kids... then I'm on pretty pretty rotation time until March. *so happy*
 
Sh... I'm enjoying these last three days before I turn into an old, decrepit hag. (And no, I'm not calling you guys old. Just that Xandies are well known to shrivel up and rot when they turn 25. True story. Look it up).

I think I might actually have to start studying for the Peds shelf this weekend. Soooooooo hard to concentrate on anything for more than an hour right now though. Might need to start a coffee IV drip to get anything done.
 
Guys...what do i need to know about the neuro exam. It doesnt seem like a whole lot of info but i hear it sucks

You can study for a whole hour? Wow. I can't seem to make it past 1.5 minutes. On a good day.

The good news is that there's only one game left tomorrow in the little league world series. Maybe I'll be able to concentrate a little more then. Eh, probably not.

baseball. i guess i've never seen the softball world series on tv. and i don't have cable right now, so can't watch if it's on espn or espn 2. if i do see it on tv, i will most likely watch.

i'm very proud of myself. i made chicken on the grill, had a good supper, tied my dog up outside and read in the wonderful non-raining outdoors for over an hour. go me.

Anybody know any details on the diagnostic kit that we were allotted $500 for in our budget? I took out extra money for that, but I'm not sure when/what we're buying.

Also, any last-minute textbook purchasing advice?

Here's a detail: don't buy one. I didn't and it didn't affect my grades one iota (nor my examination skills, methinks).

Every clinic you'll ever practice in (barring free inner city clinics) will have scopes on the walls and hospital wards have them available as well. No point in keeping an extra set around "just in case". Even in CER we used them like twice and I only borrowed a set once (thanks Ash!) and never even used it.

I'm inclined to take your advice, because I'm one of those idiots that bought a nice BP cuff. Whole lotta good it's doing me now sitting on my shelf.

I'm tempted as well. If I do buy, it will be a low-end ADC or Riester. But if you're curious, you can buy the basic Welch-Allyn for $323 at the equipment sale September 12. I looked over the price list when I was helping at the M1 equipment sale.

Then I had a heart attack.

Then I started looking at cheap used crap on E-Bay.
 
Indo will not be employing the psych book. However, I did succumb to the 1.4 hour infomercial for the Robbins path book. woohoo.

Don't buy a diagnostic kit, but you will need a reflex hammer third year (which you can often get for free from a drug rep).

I used my otoscope during my peds outpatient rotation.

And that's it.


Oh, and third years....

Don't buy a Sanford guide. Wait until you get one from a drug rep.

I got a oto/opthalmoscope, but I was helping sell last year, so I got a big discount from the guy in charge. I admit it was kinda nice not having to worry about borrowing for CER. And I actually did use it for my medicine OSCE last week cuz they had the pan-optic opthalmoscope head, and I wanted to use my regular (I have both - you can see more with the panoptic, but its kinda odd for the patient cuz you have to plaster it to their head). Other than that, haven't used it. But, since I got the discount, I don't regret buying it.

I keep hearing to hold out on the Sanfords but after 2 months on medicine I have yet to see a drug rep with them. When will I see them?


I highly second the recommendation for Goljan's Rapid Review Path. I like Robbins, but it just takes so long to read. And everyone knows I do everything at the last minute. So if you can manage your time well Robbins may be worth it, as I did retain much of the info I read. I like BRS too, but Rapid Review I think is even better, and I followed along with the audio. I think over the course of M2 year and boards studying, I listened to Goljan ~4 times.

My M2 book recommendations:
RR Path
clinical micro made ridiculously simple
Lange Path flashcards if you like flashcards
Lange Pharmacology cards, supplemented with your own handcrafted cards

I guess that's it.
 
woo hoo! just got back from Rosie's on Water, and my brother just proposed to his girlfriend. She was caught completely by surprise, and the whole thing is on video. I'll post the YouTube when she posts it.

No, he actually proposed at Red Arrow Park (practically across the street), because that's where he first told her that he loved her (a year and a half ago). We went to Rosie's so that she would think that was our primary intent for going downtown, but we picked it because of its proximity to the park.

I hate packing. At least I get to get out of here for the weekend. I'm going to Portland to buy a snowboard without sales tax 😀 (Ok, so maybe the real reason I'm going to Portland is to see my parents who are visiting family friends, but they're the ones with the credit card and said we could look at Labor Day sales).
 
Ashleigh, I'm so jealous. I need a snowboard if I'm ever gonna get better at it. Mine's too big (160). But since I maybe make it to a hill once a year these last few, I really can't spend the money.

The medicine shelf just might kill me tomorrow morning. Oh why couldn't I have been more motivated to study earlier in the month. It's gonna be a long night - time to go to the store for a gallon of goldfish crackers.
 
This entire forum seems to slow down this time of year. This thread is a week old, and it's still in the top 15 or so.
