we had lots of ped vs car, motorcycle vs car and car going 100mph vs tree stuff in june. the most disturbing was the guy on a motorcycle sandwiched by a car. he ended up with a through knee amp. when we initially debrided his leg and had plastics operate with us, it was literally like picking apart a pile of bone fragments and dying muscle looking for nerves and arteries. Ironically, his neurovasculature survived, but there was nothing else. started with BKA, but progressed to through-knee.

the 100mph car guys were the ones with 4 broken extremities in multiple places. it was awesome.

ashers, nice work on the humerus fx!

the call at froedtert is different now too. some sort of team call, but not the whole team. i didn't get it, but i don't have to deal with it either. and apparently it's no longer a and b teams. just numbers.

i like MICU VA. No call.

also, on my peds ortho in sept at MN - no weekends, no call i have been informed. and it's only 3 weeks, so i have a 1 week mini-vacation.

I was delivered by one of the partners in his group practice. 😀 Great bunch of doctors...I think they're the strongest group, personality-wise, at Joe's.
The OB who delivered me also delivered my mom. It'd be cool to be a neonatologist or something and see your patients grow up into healthy adults.

Froedtert call is supposed to be just the like the VA, I was told.

i don't like the air freshener commercial with the elephant.

Things I strongly dislike and feel are incredibly overrated:
P. Diddy or whatever his stupid name is now
Amy Winehouse
Pants that require one hand to be holding them up at all times

Dammit. I think I've run out of reasons to stay up tonight.

I assembled a "Smokey Joe" Weber grill tonight. Because I was bored.

Will and Grace just came on. I think I'll go to bed.

theophylline.

There's always money in the banana stand!

Just wondering what the story is about the VA MICU, since I'm on it next month. Just got the e-mail full of exciting attachments, one of which says that we're expected to show up on holidays and weekends. Do they really want us to show up on Monday (Labor Day)? Also do they have anything like JMS call until 10? What's up with weekends?

Please tell me that my Sep. will be better than my busy-as-hell sub-I is this month...

The critically ill don't get their ET tubes taken out for the weekend OR labor day, so you better be there, buster.

Can someone tell me where this mythical 4th year disappeared to?

Hey yeasterbunny, did they make you buy a parking pass when you were on Forensic Pathology last May? I haven't heard anything from the course coordinator yet.

I was only there for half a month because it was May and I was graduating, so it was cheaper for me to pay day by day. You will not be provided with parking by the OME however so yeah, I would buy a month pass at the garage across the street.

BTW don't believe anything Dr. Poulos may say I did or said while I was there.

So, not a bad month. Occasionally we'd get busy (i.e. 4-6 patients), but we heal 'em and transfer 'em as quickly as possible. Today, we have 1 consult. Hopefully I didn't just jinx us. As for the calendar of events, we always had the journal club tuesday afternoons and case conference on thursdays, and usually the wed lecture here. Never went to anything at Froedtert. Sometimes went to medicine noon conference and most M&Ms here. We did have to cover weekends and we were always out by noon. As for holidays, I have no idea because there are no holidays in Augusts. No call. When we had a late admission and coded someone a couple days I was here late (7pm) but usually left by 4, sometimes earlier. Many team lunches in the Milwaukee/Tosa/Stallis area. We made oodles of appointments for application/LOR stuff and it was never a problem.

That about sums it up. Pretty laid back. Though it'll depend on your residents too.

Just found out I'm related to my intern, by marriage. Her cousin (an IR doc) married my second cousin (Dr. Otterson's sister, actually). Makes me wonder who else I'm related to in some way.

i'm pretty sure i won't be getting my yearbook page done. i'm a little more concerned with rocking the exam that's 1/3 of my grade for the EM rotation. oh well.

I enlisted my wife to work on mine while I finish a presentation tonight. She's finally putting all that money she spent on scrapbooking supplies to good use.

Just let haldemann know that you'll get it done late, she's ok with that (to turn it in up until like next Tuesday or something).

The picture of you, me and amie at REI wearing hats made it on my page.

Funk, I don't have any pictures with you to put on my yearbook page. =(

If you come take one of the three admissions that are en route to the hospital while I'm on call tonight I might let you take a picture with me. K thx.

No thanks. I don't need to do any peds admits, and I guess I don't need any pics w/you on my yearbook page. You may appear in candids. (I've submitted the majority of the candids 100 vs the previous 5.)

At some point this weekend, I will relieve you of my wii. 😉

Yeah, I was in Dr. Haldemann's office the other day looking at the 2008 and 2007 yearbooks, and I asked about the baby picture thing. She said I could even turn that in when I get back in October. The August deadline is so early because she anticipates people screwing it up and being late.

Gimme a call Sunday or Monday afternoon about the Wii as I''m post-call today and will be out of town tomorrow.

Don't worry about the pic, I think we both realize that pirates and ninjas can't let the world know that we can actually get along.

anybody have any thoughts on Surgery Recall? Is it good? Anyone have one to sell?

I thought it was pretty handy overall, although I would definitely try to find a used copy or borrow one. I also liked reading Lawrence Essentials of Surgery for a quick preview before some cases and discussion of perioperative complications.

You think the 1998 version - available for $5 online - is good enough?

yes. i had bought an old edition for about the same price.

i liked surgery recall for quick reading between cases.

that's one of the best parts about St. Joe's for surgery...."between cases" doesn't really exist. You have "before and after my case."

Can we do a September M3/M4 roll call?

I'm doing Forensic Pathology at the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.

ORTHO ORTHO ORTHO

At the dert.

Something tells me that gimlet will be the one organizing reunions. 😉

LOL...no, I just like knowing where I can expect to bump into people, I guess (not that I will be around campus very much this month).

Which ortho service are you on, Ashers?

you'll have to call the po-po and claim you're gonna kill yourself or have a manic episode with psychotic features to see me this month...emergency psych at the Mental Health Complex.
