Thanks Dodo! I'm not even remotely interested in neuroscience for the most part (the one exception being Robert Sherwin's research at Yale on glucose sensing in the brain and its effect on beta cell insulin secretion), but I am aware of Columbia's pre-eminence in this field.

As far as Ivy-ness goes, it's a non-issue for me...although the idea of it being somewhat of an uptown annex of The Penn Club or The Harvard Club is not necessarily tantalizing. I've never been one for old boys' clubs (which I have also heard Columbia seems to some)...but at least MD/PhD students tend, ironically, to be much more chill and less cutthroat than our MD-only counterparts (the Ivy Leaguers among whom I have such stories about!).

Anyway, thanks for your 2c! I have no idea if I'll like Columbia or not...and I hope that all of the confusion surrounding my invite (it turns out the original one went into my spam folder wayyyy back in September...one of life's merry pranks) does not adversely affect my candidacy in the post-interview interval...but I'll certainly keep an open mind!

I agree with you on the 'Ivy-ness' thing; in looking at a school I care a lot more that the student population be racially and ethnically diverse and have had a variety of life experiences, because then an oddball like me has a better chance of fitting in. :D That said, the Ivy undergrad institutions I'm familiar with are all incredibly diverse (in every way you could imagine) to begin with, so drawing med students from their graduates need not necessarily affect overall diversity. So I'm indifferent to the Ivy factor per se.

People (from my undergrad, no less!) had warned me about an 'old boys' club' at Columbia, but I didn't get that vibe when I was there FWIW and the mud-phud class is certainly a lot more diverse (in terms of the undergrad institutions they attended). So good luck on the interview. If they wanted to interview you way back in September, that's probably a good sign.

Does anyone know what the travel reimbursement procedure for the university of Washington (Seattle) is? Are you meeting at a 'bar' (I assume you mean a hotel bar - generally far nicer than a normal bar)? If so then by all means order a cocktail if you want a drink or a beer or a glass of wine. Alcohol shouldn't be seen as an evil - drink responsibly.

I know that at the Rhodes scholar interviews they provide alcohol - my friend (the one who ended up getting Rhodes) was excited because a glass of wine helped her chill....

Northwestern's last interview was Feb 12-14. Rejection letters are in the mail, if that's what you're getting at :(

I'm headed to OHSU in March (I was complete there in November). Interviews invites are still going out.

I'm off to Emory later this month. I like the interview feedback section, but I noticed no one has ever posted an MD/PhD review for Emory. Just wondering if the MD/PhD interview experience was similar to the MD (with the obvious research/ other MD/PhD differences). How were the days broken up? Thanks.

First day is driving tour of Atlanta, tour of Grady Hospital, tour of med school building and campus, a few MSTP interviews, one 3 on 3 med school interview panel (pretty chill).

The second day is just meeting with people whose research you are interested in (don't have to dress up).

Overall, I would say it is not stressful and I had a good time.
