*** Official Minnesota c/o 2015 Thread***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am going to e-mail the admissions office about it. An increase of $8k in tuition is a lot for OOS. Notice that the living/transportation cost is $6.5k more ($12362 on website vs $18894 on blue sheet). The total increase in cost of attendance would be around $14k.

How can you even live on 12.3k/year? i say the website numbers are off

Congrats to those who made it in. My AADSAS is still under review because I submitted pretty late. I am in 3rd year and this was my first time applying, so I won't be too disappointed if I don't get an interview or anything. I am wondering if anyone heard anything from the interviewers about what fraction of the seats are remaining and when/if more interviews will go out? Or even when MIN's cycle will be pretty much closed?? Thanks,
An Unresolved Applicant

It's hard to say for sure how many seats are available, but I'm sure if you check the predents website you may get a rough idea on how many people have been accepted, how many are attending etc.

I know we have to send our transcripts to UMN because AADSAS does not provide them with a copy.

Also, I'm assuming our LORs do not need to be resent? I am correct in my assumption? 🙄

And also the documentation of shadowing hours: they must only need that for people who did not satisfy the minimum requirement when initially submitting aadsas?

I'm excited to be joining you all as a fellow classmate in August! Guess it's time to dust off the ol' Gopher starter jacket from 3rd grade! 🙂

Yes, I believe this is correct. 🙂

I just paid my deposit yesterday. There's a large hole in my wallet now 🙁

I paid my deposit last week.

I feel your pain!

At least we know it was $1000 well spent! 😉

hey, did you get confirmation of payment received? I live in Canada and I had to send a bank draft, and I can't tell if it's been cashed.

I haven't checked yet, I'll look when I get home and I'll post back!

I get all nervous mailing important things through the mail! :scared:

They have not cashed my check yet.

UMN must have received my check, because I received the big packet with additional information in the mail today.

🙂

Hello all, I am not from the UMD area...do you have any apartment recommendations? Looking blindly online brings up too many results.

Thanks,

J

I believe the initial acceptance email said there would be housing information that may be able to help you out, provided in the packet that gets sent after we pay our deposit. Perhaps Mr. Beans could weigh in on this since he recently got his packet of additional info?

The package that comes in the mail after you accept your offer and send your deposit contains some good housing information/details.

If you send your deposit, your package with additional housing details should be on the way.

I'll also say that it is a feasible possibility to live in on the St. Paul campus in the Falcon Heights/Roseville area, as there is a reliable campus connector bus that runs from the St. Paul campus right to the door step of the dental school.

I have known some people that have rented/leased living spaces on the University of Minnesota golf course, and it worked out well for them to commute to Moos Tower every day. This is an option geared for those more inclined to exercise, as the distance from the house to the bus stop on the St. Paul campus is about 5-6 minutes by bicycle. (Just thought I'd mention this).

Thanks for the information. I hope to receive that packet any day now.

Anyone's check get cashed yet?

Mine has not.

What does the acceptance packet say about criminal background check. I haven't submitted my check yet and got that erroroneous e-mail from the criminal background service. Not sure if any of you guys got it or not.

Do we need to do the background check with Certiphi?

The erroneous email doesn't list Minnesota anywhere. By the looks of the acceptance letter, it looks like the background check form is something that's going to be mailed to us (item 5) that we have to fill out and send back in. Also waiting for the acceptance packet.

Minnesota does not use Certiphi. It should not be necessary to complete the Certiphi (CBC) application.

Minnesota will send out specific information regarding background check information.

I know this is a bit off topic but I am applying to the U of M next year ( I am a regional state resident) and was just wondering what are your plans after dental school fiance wise? Dentistry isn't in my family and I am kind of shy about joining the military. Does the state of Minnesota have an tuition pay back system? Indian Reservations or Rural Dentistry (I have heard of AppleTree but I am not sure what its all about) Thanks

I plan to marry her in july shortly before starting dschool. Can't wait!

North Side,

Start off checking with your home state's (and even other regional states) dental association, as many of them have information on loan repayment incentive programs to recruit dentists to areas of high need. Since you seem to want to steer clear of the army, other organizations that also offer scholarships and loan repayment programs include the USPHS Commissioned Corps, Indian Health Service, National Health Service Corps and the National Institute of Health. I believe some of the regional states also have funds set aside for reciprocity agreements with the U of M, to reduce the cost of tuition for regional students... but you will likely have to apply for this. I hope that's enough info to get you started!

anyone get an update on the actual cost for OOP? The website figures seem misleading.

Anybody know howsoon after the interview am I gonna be notified acceptance/ rejection? Mine is tomorrow in Moos

chriscyy,

That would be a good question to ask one of the people at your interview, or the admissions office after the fact. They will know best, as there are many factors that could impact the turnover time.

I think all the waiting is by far the hardest part of the application process, but the anticipation makes the payoff that much better. Best of luck at your interview! 🙂

Risking being too picky, i would just be aware of the way that you ask about the turn around time. You don't want to sound like you assume that you will get in. You and they both know that it is very competitive. If the question comes off as, "so when will I get in?" it may reflect poorly. Not unlike asking in a job interview, "when do I start?" If it were me, I would hope somebody else asks first. It's an important question to ask, I'm just saying be tactful in the way you ask it is all. good luck :spam:

Thank you for your advice assimilation. Should I talk to Dr. Lopez maybe? Also just wondering whether or not they are gonna rely solely on this interview. in other words, how important is this interview? i didnt know before that this was an "blind" interview until naty told us in orientation... i was a bit nervous at interview and might have not answered couple questions so well... so.... am i out?.....or should i still bear some hope..

I am out of state... international..... i am a biology major in the U of M though... would an average interview kill me? should i maybe start writing something to naty?

First, regarding how you think you did on the interview: After my own interview, I remember coming out a bit disappointed because some of the questions caught me off guard and I didn't feel like I had done my best. I was a little worried I had ruined the opportunity. I would be willing to bet that there are more than a few people who felt like this after their interviews, so don't feel that it's over yet 😉

As for how long you'll be waiting for a decision: I think it would be alright to call the admissions office and explain to them you've just had your interview and were wondering how long it might be before hearing anything about a decision. At the very least they may be able to tell you when the adcom meets next so that you have some idea of the time frame.

Hey! Did you find out anything as to when Minnesota will send out more acceptances? I interviewed with you on the 12th

Has anyone heard anything about acceptances at Minnesota?

Thought they'd have done a 2nd round by now.

I got my acceptance email yesterday for round 2!!!!
So happy!

This is for all my fellow canadians who were accepted. I found this on the website.

"International applicants who have been accepted must guarantee sufficient funds to meet all their educational and personal expenses for the duration of their F-1 status at the University of Minnesota."

I really hope this doesn't mean that the $360K needs to be deposited into an escrow upfront or anything like that. I haven't been able to get an answer from the financial advisor. Anyone have an idea?

Although I'm not an international student nor an expert in your question, I would assume that F-1 means only for Fall Semester of Year 1.

So, You would neek funds around $30K?

Again, don't quote me, but forking over $360K in one deposit seems like an unreasonable hurdle for many international students. 😕

Hey MrBeans. An F-1 status is valid for all of the four years, so it doesn't correspond to just 1 semester or year. It is the name of the visa issued for the duration of study at the school. The reason I ask is because I did a search on Canadian student funding and came across a few threads in med where accepted applicants mentioned that some med schools required the money upfront in an escrow. That scares the hell out of me.

Thanks for informing me!

Show's how much I know about international student affairs, I've got to work on that.

Yeah, that is pretty scary!

I hope you get to the bottom of your question, with a good solution. :xf:
