i m coming in august!!!!!!!!!!!!! can't wait to meet everyone!!!!

Looks like I'll also be there in August.

does anyone know what date the orientation is and when the classes start?

I'm fairly sure the anatomy immersion starts August 3. I'm not sure when the preCOM day is.

i'm still deciding between oucom and nova. i'm holding both spots. i'm going to take a second look in May and decide.

When you start here one key thing to remember is not to stress out over immersion. If they keep everything the same, you wont be tested on any of the anatomy stuff now (you will go over it again later in the year where you will be tested). The point of the immersion is to get your familiar with the muscles where you will be palpating during OMM. I think if more people knew that it the anatomy stuff wouldnt count toward a grade earlier, they would have been less stressed, at least for me.
Things do change every year though, so what we did this year may be a little dated for you guys. Either way you'll love it here! N e questions about this place, feel free to ask:-D

I sent in my deposit today. Do they send you any information on housing when they receive your deposit or should i start looking myself at this point?

Hey Guys!

For those of you that have been accepted, Congratulations! Deciding between medical schools can be hard however the terminal decision can be much easier to come by if you spend time talking to the students the medical schools you are choosing from. So, feel free to voice any questions/concerns that you may have to the students/administration/faculty of the school that you are considering. I would also recommend not just talking to 1st and 2nd years but also 3rd and 4th years because there is a MAJOR difference in perspective when dealing with students in the basic science phase of medical education and those currently in the clinical phase.

Gross Anatomy Immersion is a month long gross lab course for first year medical students to become acquainted with functional Anatomy. It does a great job of introducing medical students to clinical anatomy concepts. It's a humbling experience as will allow you to encounter one of the defining features of medical school - dissecting a human cadaver! The best part is, that it isn't graded so relax those sphincters! 😳p It's meant to ease you into the malignant life of medical school. Hope that clarifies a little bit about the Immersion.

Average stats for Ohio are ~27; and ~3.6

If you have anymore questions, feel free to keep posting or email anyone that goes to Ohio and surely someone will give you a response back! Good luck and Congratulations once again! 🙂

As the new school year encroaches, you will start recieving information about housing, however, you should keep checking your Orientation webpages as they do provide a lot of information on housing. Infact, I am looking at the "Future Students" section of the OU webpage and there is a specific link for housing:
http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/saffairs/housing.htm

Hope that helps =o)

Hello all! I just toured the school and spoke with Jill yesterday. What an awesome program on a beautiful campus! It appears that I probably won't get invited to interview for the April dates 🙁 (however I am keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed!) , but you had better believe I am going to reapply next year if I have to! Is there an early decision option? I am truly impressed by the level of support for students in such a nurturing environment, and the sincere dedication to education and community service. Great facilities too! Its no wonder you guys rock on the boards! 🙂

Hello everyone! As of now it looks like I am headed there in the fall as well! Where is everyone from?

Hey boys and girls! Just wanted to drop a quick hello to all my classmates/colleagues. In response to the last entry, my wife and I are originally from Trumbull county in NE Ohio, did our undergrad in SE TN and are back! It's good to be an Ohio-an again. From what I've seen OU-COM is one of the best osteopathic schools. We are truly in for a great experience. 😱 😱 😱

I always wonder why the other schools seem to have much more activity in the forums than OUCOM.
Well I just wanted to say congrats and welcome to everyone else that is coming to OUCOM. I should either be sleeping or studying for the upcoming test, not be on here so goodnight. If you have any more q's about OUCOM feel free to ask.

OMS1 OUCOM Class of 2009

Alex is right! This thread needs some vitality! Quick! Someone get the paddles... 200 Joules. Clear! 😀 Even Blackboard is kind of dead. I guess this is what I get for graduating in December: alot of free time. Well congrats to everyone on making it. Remember: the biggest hurdle is just getting accepted. 😎

Alex! Get back to studying young man! You have an exam in two days!! lol

This thread is so sad, where are all our classmates? Is anyone going to Pre-Com in a couple weeks?

I think sad is a little bit of an understatement. I think all of three people have posted something on Blackboard about themsleves despite the fact that half of the class was at the first PreCOM and activated their OAK accounts. Oh well. C'mon people... show some love for your schoooool. We made it into MEDICAL SCHOOL!!! It's not a funeral.
:hardy:

 C'mon peoples... 2 PAGES!!!! We can do it!!!!

OK so has anyone figured out where they planning on living yet? I am headed to Pre-Com on the 20th and hope to spend the Friday before looking around at a few options.

Hi everyone! My name is Meghan and I will see you at PreCOM on May 20th. I was actually supposed to start last fall...but took advantage of the 2 years tuition paid for and deferred for a year. I'm itiching to start now. I am really excited for the PreCOM day and am hoping to get some good info. I am going to be living with my sister (and my dog Ernie), who is finishing her undergrad at OU. We found an apt in the plains. I found most of the apts on the website through the OUCOM main page. Anyway, can't wait to meet all of you!

Welcome Meghan and congrats. Where at in The Plains are you living? My wife and I live in Beckford Place Apt's.

For anyone else interested: in addition to the OU-COM housing website my wife and I found the two local newspapers somewhat helpful as well. Also, some of the listings on OU-COM's site are dead ends that have either already been rented or the renters decided not to rent and the listing was never updated by the renter. Either way be prepared to do ALOT of apartment hunting. It will be worth it though.

What is the 2 years paid tuition thing? That service corps thing?

can somebody tell me what the five year contract thing is all about at OUCOM?

The five year thing is an admissions contract that you sign; I had to sign one because even though I am an Ohioan by birth, I applied as a Tenn. resident. By signing it you are saying that after you get done with residency you will practice for at least five years in Ohio. HOWEVER, they amended some new stipulations for the contract saying that if:

1. You do an AOA accredited residency in Ohio in primary care, each year of the residency counts as one and one half years off of the contract, and

2. You do an AOA accredited residency in a non-primary care field (radiology, surgery, etc), each year of residency counts as one year off of the contract.

Not a bad deal if you don't mind Ohio. I would like to my residency in Ohio so I don't mind. Just depends on what you want. Hope that helps, and if I missed/messed anything please amend me.

so if you are a non-ohioan and wish to practice 0 years in ohio, you can't go to OUCOM right?. you basically have to practice 5 years in ohio right? i have no intention of practcing in Ohio so basically i shouldn't apply to OUCOM right?.

Josh,

Thank you for the housing/newspaper links. My husband and I will be hunting around Pre-Com weekend but now I can plan ahead some. Thanks!

Bengali, like the stipulations state, if you go through an AOA residency that adds up to the five years then you are free to go. But if you go through a traditional allopathic residency then you will have to practice for five years after. If not, then you end up basically paying for another student to go to medical school at OU. The whole reason for the contract is to retain doctors in Ohio and also encourage students to stay with an AOA residency in Ohio by taking time off of the commitment. So if none of this sounds pleasing then no, you should consider schooling elsewhere. Best of luck either way.

Lisa, you are very welcome. If you or your husband have any questions please feel free to PM me. I check my email religiously. Good luck. By the way, my wife and I live in Beckford Place in The Plains (2 or 3 miles from campus... VERY convenient and QUIET... no drunken undergrads) and there MIGHT be some apt's opening up for June/July. We found it on rent.com. The property manager was very nice and waived our background check fee because I am coming to medical school and because my wife and I have good credit our deposit was half of what is listed. Worth a look anyway.

Hi guys -

I am going to PreCOM on the 20th too and I am excited to meet everyone. I think I am living at Carriage Hill Apartments because you are considered a commuter and can get a parking pass close to school. Sorry I am engaged too!

Luv2Dance said:
hey, how come every other person going to OU-COM is either married or engaged? Any single, male, good looking, incoming OUCOM med students out there? 😉

Although I am happily married (5 years), yes there ARE good-lookin', single guys that are coming to OU. Remember, our class has like 100 people; I'm sure there will be SOMEONE there! Welcome and congrats, you too Katiebug (have fun at PreCOM, my wife and I found it very informative).

They overbooked last year so they asked students to take 2 years tuition paid if they deferred for one year. Not a whole lot jumped at it, but some did take it🙂 I was itching to take it, but I am glad I am almost done with year one. Hope to see you guys soon! Maybe I'll swing by the precom to grab some free food, i mean to meet some of you.🙂

Wow! That was really cool of them!

is the only way an out of student can go to OUCOM is through signing the five year contract? do all students sign it, what if i want to do residency in michigan and practice in michigan, that means i can't go to OUCOM right because i would have to sign the five year contract which says that I have to practice in Ohio for five years.

I refer you to my previous post, ppormandoormd. From what I gather, you can do a residency in Michigan if you like, but you'll have to come back to Ohio to practice for five years after. Hope that helps. 🙂

Out of staters have to sign the contract (in-staters dont) but you can "buy out" if you really dont want to stay and practice.

what do u mean by "buy out"?

Has anyone decided which track they want to do yet? Why?

Thanks! 😛

CPC... even though my COMrade said that some of the lectures are worthless, I still like to go to lecture (the worthwhile ones). Also, I like knowing that today we are going to be going over "X". Just my preference though.

Katiebug said:

CPC for me! Medical school will require a lot of adjustment in terms of llocation, books, courseload etc....I wouldn't want to adjust my studying strategies on top of that. I like lectures because a lot of times I have to hear something in order to recall it and it is more organized. But again, to each his own.

For anyone who is still deciding, I was talking to some of the medical students at the interview and they said that each pathway has its own advantages and disadvantages. While many times lectures are organized and spoonfed there are other times when you have to learn on your own too. And while PCC is not as organized you have more free time and your schedule is more flexible. Something to consider....

Can you attend particular lectures if you are in the PCC, but think you might benefit from it? And do PCC students have access to the taped lectures as CPC does?

From my understanding PCC students have access to all the recorded lectures and can choose to sit in on any lectures they wish to hear as well. I hope that helps. It looks like I will be taking the PCC track 😀
