this so cool...its been 5 years since i posted in this thread...wow wow haha...well i am a 2nd yr med student now....time flies fast!
now that im finally in, im going to take myself off of all of those annoying as hell AMSA/AED mailing lists. God damn those guys are annoying. you know who im talking about.
Hey all, I'm an incoming student to Rutgers about to enter my freshman year. I'm taking pretty much your basic pre-med classes (Calc 151, Expos, Gen Bio, Gen Chem, and a seminar (What do Corporations Owe Society)).
I have a bunch of volunteer work... maybe not a bunch but there's still a lot going on here: River Road Fire Company (probably going to Fire School next summer), River Road Rescue Squad (about to get my EMT Cert), semi-active volunteer at Saint Pete's University Hospital.
I just recently got in contact with a doctor about ideally shadowing him throughout the year so if this goes well, I'll have that on my belt.
I'm looking to get into the BA/MD program that is offered jointly with UMDNJ/RWJ. What else can I do to ensure acceptance? There is a lab I'm trying to get a job with (~5-10 hours a week so it's pretty sweet for $12/hr).
I'm really scared about this. My parents are paying for my education by deducting from their 401k and I feel absolutely TERRIBLE about this (it is my fault for not working ot my potential) so I do not want to let them down again.
I must be a doctor. MUST.
Please counsel me.

I work at RWJUH right now and the volunteers don't do ****tt. From what I've seen they escort patients around and some are designated to sit at the nurses station on a floor and answer the call bell. Most of them are young though so it's possible I don't see what the older volunteers do. I think their shadowing program is pretty good though so I'm going to check that out next week after my summer class ends.Is that enough or should I perhaps try to begin volunteering at Robert Wood Johnson come September?
Rruuuuu. Exercise Phys Major
I'm taking orgo with Boikess
Physics w/ Gentile (I wanted to take Extended but the first session starts in spring and I wanna take the MCAT next summer)
Neuromechanical Kinesiology with Manfredonia
a Comp and Applications class.
and TA for Anatomy
I pretty much know what to expect but anybody have to take the kinesiology class? I can't find any ratings for Manfredonia.
orgo with boikess is a mistake. your definitely putting yourself at a disadvantage by not taking o'connor. i know hes hard to get, but therse a reason for that.
and btw...extended physics (the one in spring): brahmia teaches it...and w/o a doubt in my mind, dr. brahmia was the best professor i have ever seen. no teacher truly cares about his students more than he does...and i NEVER fell asleep in his class...hes VERY lively and encouraging. i remember he caught one of my friends "possibly" using the teachers manual for hw problems...he didnt get him in trouble, but instead told him he doesnt care..b/c the only person who's losing out is the student, and that he knows the manual is out there, but hopes students will take initiative and WANT to do good. also, when the dept. considered getting clickers to make kids come to class, he got up and said that its a bad idea...that the problem is teachers..and that teachers should be so good that students WANT to come to class. his class was one of the few that didnt have clickers...yet it was always packed. truly amazing guy. jus check out his ratemyprof.
I've heard about O'Connor but rumor was that he retired last year so he wasn't listed as a professor for Orgo. Then out of nowhere in like July his name was added to the list with Boikess and Roth. So it's possible all three may be teaching the class next semester? Or it's possible that RU is just trying to pull a fast one on the students because they know students prefer O'Connor so they just put his name next to all the sections though he may not be teaching them.
I've heard great reviews on Brahmia, both on rmp.com and word of mouth but with the plan I have that means I'd only have one semester of physics going in to the MCAT. I know it isn't purely knowledge based but it probably couldn't hurt to have both semesters under my belt.
Dude, don't go to Newark. The New Brunswick campus is much better - it's rated a lot higher and has better facilities, etc. I hate to say this, but if the Newark campus holds a better rep for admissions, that may just be because they have a higher percentage of URMs. If you're making a choice based on best shot at med school, DEFINETLY go to New Brunswick. Try to go to Rutgers College if you can (it's seen as the most prestigious).
Lotsa Luck

I think you misunderstood me. I gained acceptance to rutgers newark, new brunswick (rutgers college), as well as cook campus and have attended newark for a year now. I know that new brunswick has a nice campus, but newark really is a good campus as well (the only thing that sucks here is the social life). The teachers are top rate (for the most part) and actually the pre-medical facilities here are quite good. Dr. Maiello is wonderful, and a real asset to any ambitious premed student. I fully agree that perhaps socially new brunswick has a better campus, but academically I really wouldn't put newark down. Not to say I'm still not tempted to transfer due to social reasons. You also may be right about URM's as the newark campus is highly diversified, and that would not work in my favor as I am not a minority.
Okay, I dunno why I can't use the regular reply feature (it's shaded out for me) so I have to do this through quick reply.I work at RWJUH right now and the volunteers don't do ****tt. I'm really excited about shadowing this doctor, like, I can't even begin to describe it. I just have to maintain excellent grades and I think a position in this program will be guaranteed for me.
What do you guys advise for me to do in the meantime?
I don't think anything is guaranteed. You can never be too certain. With a high g.p.a. and good MCAT then with a good interview you'll most likely get in but if you're limiting yourself to those 3 EC's then you're really not making yourself the best applicant you can be... which is a necessity when you're competing against people that are anal about this process and spend every free second doing something that improves their application.
I'm not just sticking with those three (Rescue Squad, Fire Department, and Shadow) if that's what you're referring to. I'm really excited to join the RUBJJ team and also the Muay Thai team. So it'll actually be like 5, I'm hoping to get a job at Saint Peters (weekends only thank god) otherwise just stay unemployed to focus on my grades.
But I'm going for that 8 year BA/MD program that you apply for at the end of your sophomore year. Also next summer one of our family friends who works at Bristol Myer's Squibb is hopefully going to hook me up with an internship.
I'm trying extremely hard to make the appropriate connections while balancing my grades and such.
Also, opinions about Human Parasitology, by any chance? lol, ok I'm done.

I'm a transfer student from Newark to New Brunswick as well, and though I'm really happy to be going to NB, I'll wait till I've been there for a while to pass judgement. Newark definitely didn't sit well with me though, especially if you dorm.
Also, does anyone know about Taylor? I'm taking Prin. of Orgo next year.
Enjoying your freshman year while you can = Epic fail, in my experience. Too many people use that excuse to fail all their classes. If you can juggle everything, than good for you lol, you'll probably make a great doctor.
I'm going for the 7 year BA/MD too. Believe me, nothing's guaranteed. Every applicant will be just as good if not better than you. Good luck dude.
I'm looking to greatly expand my extracurriculars in New Brunswick (god I hated Newark's lack of ECs)...any recommendations? Is the Pre-Med Club actually useful in New Brunswick? because it was totally useless in Newark.
Also, I heard that local Rescue Squads will pick you up in their ambulances. Do any of you know which ones do this? I'm an EMT but I don't have a car and I would love to volunteer during the year...too far away from my home squad.

Anyone take Calc II in NB? I was going to take it this fall but ended up dropping it because of advice I got. And anyone know who the best professor for systems phys is? Does it even matter?
I actually face the same dilemma as you except I'm going to be a junior now. First off, orgo lab does take forever but it's only one semester and orgo 1 is a prereq so if you take orgo and physics with lab you'll know after the end of that semester whether or not you can handle orgo lab as well. You can't go wrong with physics though. If you decide to hold off on physics you should take extended as I've heard nothing but good reviews for that class. I'll be taking Physics with Gentile because my major prefers that I take for the Sciences and because I can't wait to take extended because I want to take the MCAT next summer. I don't know too much about your MCAT question, do a search for it. As far as I know unless you choose to cancel your score before the end of the exam when you apply to medical school all scores, however many times you took it, will be visible to them. So it is in your best interest to make sure you're prepared the first time around.hey,
i posted this before, but i figured it would be more helpful to get some advice from fellow RU students, given that you guys know the class structures and what not. So, I'm debating on whether to take orgo with physics (physics for sciences w/ Gentile), or whether to take orgo this year and physics next year. While I would like to get these classes out of the way and fulfill my major classes (i'm an Econ major btw), I don't know which path to take.
My decision of taking orgo and physics together is questionable, especially since orgo lab meets like 6 hours a week, and orgo lab combined with orgo, physics, and physics lab would be too much. But I've also heard that most of the time sophs. get the RU screw and orgo labs usually fill up around spring semester, so a lot of people are stuck taking orgo lab after taking orgo (usually junior year). With that said, can anyone please give me some suggestions?
Also, when would it be best to take the MCAT? In the event that I decide to take the MCAT next summer, would I have the option of concealing my score to med schools?
thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

YES IT DOES MATTER! you'll realize (if you haven't already) that it doesn't matter what class you take, but what teacher you have. i had two options. take it in the fall with auerbach/john-alder, or take it in the spring with two others (dont remember the name). The spring is ALOT harder, but the curve is much more generous (80=A). The fall is easier, but less of a curve. personally, i would rather have an easy class with the regular curve (90=A) than a harder class with a big curve.
plus, auerbach is the nicest guy and he tells the funniest sex jokes in class. you'll be like "did he jus say that" to your friends ALL the time. hahahaha
overall, i still stand by my opinion that system phys was my favorite class overall at Rutgers. i took it with auerbach in the fall. good luck.

Yay! Go Rutgers!
I know O'Conner is gone. But, I liked Boikess. He changed the entire way the course is taught...
And as for Bio, Transue was the best professor I've ever had.
Do you guys know what the mean numerical score is for Organic Chem with Boikess? Thanks in advance.
Not sure what it was for when he was the only professor teaching the class but this year the average the exam based on the chapters he lectured was a 57.
Oh and just to let off a little steam... ROTH BLOWS.
Have any of you guys heard about what kind of curve Orgo 307 has?
So I got my first A in college in expos!
Been studying very very hard for my Calc 151 final (that is tomorrow) and I'm feeling extremely good about it. So good actually!

Most likely, you're in that range. That's what I heard the curve normally comes out to be. I'm sitting right at the average . I need to do amazing on this final. I'm in Douglass right now... though it doesn't say much that I'm online.yeahh...my Total score for all three exams soo far is a 201 exactualy out of 300. The class average is about 165. Am I in good B+ range?
Um hey guys... I kind of messed up bigtime my second semester. I got a freaking B in General Biology. Does it screw me over a lot? I'm kind of worried, I figured I'd work harder and compensate but it's gonna be harder now than it has ever been...
I'm also thinking about taking Principles of Organic Chemistry (actually I AM taking it lol)... I'm taking it with John Taylor. His rate my professors thing was pretty good so the class can't be THAT bad can it ?
Thanks
lol he just got in B in Gen Bio II and you're saying get an A in it.
