Official: SDNers willing to read 2003-2004 Personal Statements

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well...for me, I almost never think reading other people's PS's is a good idea. When I was writing mine, I kept looking at other people's examples and it resulted in a very bad first draft. Looking back, it was only when I was able to approach it with a clear mind, that I finally put down thoughts that were my own...and without comparing it to others.

That said, I wouldn't mind giving mine out...but I personally think it's better for them to think about it in their own way.

For those who want to look at sample essays, check out

-Essays that will get you into medical school by Kaufman, Dowhan, and Burnham. (40 essays)

-Medical school admissions by Zebala, Jones, and Jones. (50 essays).

Not sure what adding bio will do for choosing PS readers... but here goes.

I'm with Sista, I would rather keep my essay pure of extraessay contamination. 🙂

feeling too lazy to quote, but I'm with Sista (and not just b/c she's a tarheel) about thinking that it's better to write your own PS before reading others.

About me...I'm 2 years out of school, bio major, chem minor, loads of clinical research, EMT, want to do rural primary care, low GPA, high MCAT, 5'8", likes long strolls on the beach...oh wait...wrong kind of info. 😉

Anyhow, it's best of you email me your PS as an attached word doc. Just make sure you include something along the lines of "personal statement" or "from an SDNer" in the subject line so I don't delete it. 😛

I just read my first PS and realized I need to add something to my "profile" below...

btw I will be out of town Thurs and Fri so please don't expect PS's to be returned for a few days.

Anyway.... I'm a senior, extensive research (MD/PhD applicant), EMT, volunteering, foreign applicant (at a US college)

Freak - hey, no prob. This thread was actually a duplicate of oldman's thread. We had a rumble in downtown Minneapolis, decided that my thread had a better name, so kept mine.

i think we should keep a tally of how many essays each person reads or maybe que info to evenly distribute the load or possibly give recognition to 'king/queen of sdn personal statement help'.

Okay...here's my status...

Soonerpillow and Hudsontc-- I should have y'all's proofread and back to you today (maybe tonight.) Sorry for the delay...I've been swamped at work.

Dr. Steve Urkel-- email my your PS and I'm more than happy to proofread it. I just don't like trying to make comments inside a PM (yes, I'm lazy, I know).

Still willing to read others...if it takes me a little while to get back to you it's not b/c I'm ignoring you...just busy!

😀

Hey y'all! I'm willing to read and edit your personal statements... I'm working in a boring lab all summer and have nothing better to do! Just send them via email ([email protected]) and I'll give you honest feedback.

As far as my "credentials" or whatever that entails, I've been accepted at 5 schools, all of my interviewers referred to my personal statement since they thought it was "fresh and interesting," and I got an S on that horrific example of a writing sample on the MCAT. More importantly than that garbage, I'm a living, breathing person with emotions and intellect and a sense of humor--- after all, that's who will be reading them on the committees! 🙂

Another volunteer reader here.
Some background info: nontrad, engineering major(U. of MI), worked on medical devices after college, applying for next year

ok, so i need someone to read mine...beware, i'm a bad writer, so please be patient =)

a little about myself:
Undergrad: UC Berkeley
30Q mcat (8v, 11 others) - 3.94 gpa
btw - retook mcat, but scared of results =)

really bad at writing good, nonboring personal essays - i'm a science-aholic

was going to apply md/phd but decided it was too long and figured mds can do research as well.

am applying to all california schools except loma linda as well as some out of state schools like oregon, baylor, and schools that aren't in states where it is really really cold cuz i can't stand the cold....

_______________________________

so if you wouldn't mind reading mine, please pm me...the list of people who are willing to read essays is really long and i have no clue to contact...so i figure if there is someone out there who really wants to read mine, i'd ask first =)
