Taking the MCAT on September 10th, who else?

Lets form an awesome support system!

If this has already been created (I searched for a few minutes) someone let me know and I will delete it!

Thank you 🙂

You did great too! Dude with your grades you should be fine! I heard schools are much much more lenient with the new MCAT scores than before. I think they realize we are limited in materials and aamc is still working stuff out. I'm telling you the psych section on my exam was so wishy washy everything was down to two, I was consistently scoring great idk what happened, maybe Princeton matierals aren't good. Bio and psych threw me for a whirl I think test fatigue is real when you don't sleep
Yeah honestly i was so tired throughout the whole thing that i'm surprised i even got such high scores in B/S and P/S. I'm really hoping my score is competitive enough while taking the rest of my app into consideration!

Congrats everyone! I don't feel comfortable sharing but I did not do as well as I wanted so I will be retaking it possibly in January, I am not giving up!

Don't give up! Be strong and fight this test one more time! I may retake as well but I'm not sure...I am still doing research for my 126-124-126-126 for Osteopathic! THAT STUPID CARS GOT ME AGAIN!

So happy right now, here is my tl;dr concerning my MCAT journey.

Old MCAT (2014) 27 [9/8/10] which put me in the 61st percentile.

Nearly three years later I decided to spend the summer studying for this beast...

Kaplan diagnostic: 497

Highest prep company practice test: 509

AAMC Unscored 74%

AAMC Scored 508 [126/128/128/126]

Actual MCAT: 510! [ 127/126/129/128] 84 percentile.

Slightly disappointed my CARS score dipped by two points (never got below a 128), but it still puts me in the 74th percentile. I'm assuming the scale was probably less forgiving in that section. Completely shocked by my increase in C/P and P/S. Also very happy about finally breaking the 50 question mark for Bio and getting that 129.

Congratulations to everyone else! If you didn't get the score you wanted/needed don't worry just buckle down and kill it next time! If I can jump up from being in the 61 percentile to 84 then so can you!

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU 😀

Second time taking it, I got a 507 (125, 125, 127, 130). The score on my first take was a 499 (126, 123, 125, 125). I'm going to be applying to MD schools. I wonder if I should just run with my score for one cycle or retake??

Thank you! That is the plan! I know exactly what I need to do to bring up my score 🙂 Ughhh I'm sorry CARS got you!

I got a 509 and have a 3.9 GPA...wondering if I should retake it? I'm scared I won't improve significantly the second time but I really wish I got 515+...Some of the schools I really wanted to apply to now seem way out of reach, even if I got a 4.0 GPA. Can anybody give me some insight? Should I retake?

What's your cumulative GPA? The jump from 509 to 515 is significant (much harder than 499 to 509). I would only consider retaking if your GPA is well below the national average for med-school applicants (~3.7 last year).

I'm not sure if I was anxious because this was the real deal but... I seemed to be running out of time on all the sections today and rushing at the end for each section other than P/S.

C/P is my best subject but it had a lot of calculations and way more biochem than the other practice stuff. Horrible way to start.
CARS was running out of time too but didn't feel super easy or hard.
B/B had some passages I didn't understand... similar in style to the official guide passages... hope I did okay.
P/S is not my strong suit and needed to study this more, so I can't really comment. Probably would have been hard to me even if it was easy.

Countdown to Oct 12th starts today... Hope everyone did well!

Did better on C/P and B/B than I expected due to their hardness... Believe in the curve everyone!!!
Also, I thought CARS wasn't bad but did worse than I was hoping for so I guess the curve hurt me there?

Hope everyone got what they wanted and if not, study hard and ace your retake!

I had the IPOD/JUNQ passage in B/B... still have nightmares from not being able to figure it out =X

Super stoked for my score.
Considering the amount of time I had to study, I'm proud of my score.

Jan 2016: 494 - 125/123/122/124
Sep 2016: 501 - 124/125/125/127

Applying DO. Already completed SMP with 3.7 gpa and already attended one interview. One more next month. Hopefully, I'll be considered now that my scores are in.

Highest score I ever got was 510 on the AAMC Scored. Ended up with a 514 (130/127/130/127) which I am ridiculously shocked about right now!!!

Feels surreal rn especially considering that I only studied from end of June to September test date. I legit felt like I scored below a 508 after taking that exam. I'm also once again shocked that somehow my strengths are in sciences, because my sGPA blows rn.

For everyone who scored to their desired goal, congrats! And people who may not have reached their goal, you can do this! We all believe in you

Should I retake? I'm applying for MD, not DO and I have a 3.8 GPA. Also, I took the MCAT after my first year of college and I self-taught myself Biochemistry and Physics. I'm graduating within 3 years instead of 4 for financial reasons and I had enough credits coming in to make this feasible. 506: 125 C/P, 126 CARS, 125 B/B, 130 P/S.

If I were you I would retake and try to get my B/B and C/P scores up; take it after you've at least taken first semester biochem (my biochem class really helped mcat practice scores go up)

507! Went from a 498--a year ago--to a 507. I cried so hard when I saw my score. Never before I experienced such an intense emotion. Say what you want, but I came to this country when I was 19 and spoke no English back then. Joined the US Army right after I got to this great nation, deployed to Irak (cavalry scout all the way!), got out of the service when I was 23, and decided to go to college without any previous knowledge about the US higher education system and began to pursue my life-long dream, which is to become a physician. I'm doing this for my family and for the people that I would be able to help in a not-so-distant future.

Many people told me that it was not possible. When someone tells you that you can't do something, tell that person that he or she can't tell you that. Never give up; never give in. Time for me to do my salsa dancing!
Breakdown: 128/125/128/126--76%
God is great. Good luck to everyone applying and for those planning on retaking it. If you need any help, please let me know.

May God bless this nation and every single living thing. At my command, release the secondaries.

Strength and Honor

So glad it's finally over!!
I used the three free TPR tests
TPR 1: 503
TPR 2: 505
TPR 3: 502
AAMC Scored (taken three weeks before exam): 518 (129/130/130/129)
Real MCAT: 520 (130/130/130/130)

If anyone needs TPR books/study plan thoughts...I've got both!

I would love to know some of your study plan thoughts!!!! Im using KP combined with BR for prep materials along with the NS practice for psych. Balanced and very amazing score!

I'm probably a big outlier here but to give people an idea of what I was scoring before my actual (taken in order):

NS Diagnostic:496 (122/125/123/126)
TPR Demo: 499 (125/124/123/127)
NS 5: 503 (125/126/126/126)
NS 2: 510 (128/128/128/126) *was 2/3 done with content review at this point*
TPR 1: 501 (125/124/125/127)
NS 3: 510 (128/125/128/129)
OG Chem (86%) CARS (76%) Bio (70%) Psych (83%) *Completely done with content review at start of AAMC material*

SB C/P 69%
SB B/B 75%

SB P/S 67%
AAMC SCORED: 511 (130,125,129,127) *one week before*

ACTUAL: 519 (132,127,130,130)

*I took the unscored but I took it once before studying (in hindsight was a terrible idea) so I don't want to put the score up cause the 1st and 2nd take wouldn't have any relevance*

Feel free to PM me about my study schedule and what I did the last week to bump my score up! (In short the last week I did nonstop verbal passages and memorized the 100 page KA notes for psych)

Hi guys! So I can give you a little run down of what I did to study and then feel free to ask any more specific questions you have for your own situation!

So the first time I took the test in 2014 I got a 28 (P8 B9 V11) I tried applying with the score but didn’t get in…so I waited a full two years to retake. I think I’m definitely a testament to how a good study plan can change the game for a retake given I went from the 67% --> 98%

When I was looking for help with a new study plan I came across this thread and stuck to it as well as I could:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/how-i-prepped-for-a-526.1146107/

So I studied for the test in four months instead of nine like he did. The big takeaway was using anki for content review following up with Khan Academy for more vocab and checking understanding. I worked full time except the last month before the test so it’s definitely possible to do well with whatever time you have. I also did all my studying on a budget since I was doing Americorps (where you make very little money) so I only bought princeton review books, used Khan Academy free online and bought AAMC materials. For contrast I bought a whole TPR study course last time…so clearly given the difference I’m not the biggest fan of courses haha

I found supplementing with Khan Academy very helpful. There was a P/S question on the test that I happened to have an anki card about from one random Khan Academy question I got wrong once. I did all of their passages and felt it was helpful practice.

Disclaimer: I would have needed more time to study if I was studying verbal, but I did very few verbal passages. Just the question banks from old tests, all Khan Academy passages, and practice when I took tests because I knew I had done well last time and would do fine this time and wanted to make sure I had other sections down better.

Also I felt like I failed after the test and started worried I got sub 500 the night before scores came out…so the feeling after clearly doesn’t mean anything haha I also thought I failed after every section of the test…so don’t let that bog you down!

Also feel free to PM me with questions about studying if you want!

It's sort of up to how you want the application process to go...If you hadn't taken Biochemistry or Physics you probably could do much better on a second MCAT after taking those classes which would open more doors. However you fall between a 28/29 area from old scale. It's certainly possible to get into an MD school with this type of score but there's also a good chance you won't get in. I know personally when I took the old MCAT and got a 28 I was so over the MCAT I decided to apply with it anyways (also had a 3.79 gpa so very similar stats) and didn't get a single MD interview. But I had to see that before I was willing to retake. Knowing how important the retake was, I was able to totally turn things around (got a 520 the second time) so it's definitely possible to make a big score jump.

If you decide to apply then apply EARLY (I waited till august which hurt me) and if it doesn't work out you'll definitely kill the MCAT next time once you have those classes behind you!

First off, congrats on the score! Thats awesome!
How much more time would you have given yourself if you were studying verbal? I got three months until the Jan exam, and if I were only tested on the sciences, I would feel very confident with that time frame. However, CARS is very difficult for me.

Thanks!
So I think it depends on how well you are doing to start with on CARS. The main thing I was thinking time wise is not necessarily more months but more of a given study day. I was also working full time so I didn't have whole days to set aside. But as long as you can put aside a significant chunk of each day's studying for CARS three months can definitely work... good luck with your exam!

Thank you for your feedback! I'm curious, how long did you study for the MCAT the second time around? I'm taking 18 credit semesters and probably won't have much time to study during the school year and am planning to retake in June/July. Do you know by any chance, if taking the exam on the 21st of July, for instance, would be considered too late and would significantly hurt my chances for admission? Is end of June much better? Or should I pick an earlier test date than either of the two? My dilemma is that I want to ensure that I have enough time to study without killing my chances. I studied for 2 months to get 506 and I don't feel that it was a sufficient amount of time. If I had another month, I most likely would have gotten into the 510 range.

Thank you! I honestly think I need to practice a lot more so I will be taking advantage of AAMC prep materials and doing more practice passages.

I'll be starting prep for my January MCAT tomorrow, wish me luck everyone! I'm not beating myself up about my score, its the not doing as well as I wanted that's pushing me to work hard for my second (and hopefully last) MCAT!

Ideally you should test in May (or earlier), that way your scores will report before secondaries are even sent. June is also OK. If you test in July your app won't be complete until August, which is a bit late.

Another SDN member posted this a while back (can't remember his/her username) and scored in the 90th percentile. Seems legit to me.

Honestly that's a pretty hard spot to be in timing wise...thats why I ended up just applying with my score the first time...I can't recommend doing the bulk of studying while in school because you need to focus on keeping up your GPA and it's hard to set aside time for the MCAT with that. However I think taking it in June or July is potentially problematic...applying first thing in June will give you your best shot with an MCAT retake but even if you took the exam in June your apps wouldn't be in (they aren't considered complete until they have your latest MCAT) until July. Also it's seems unlikely that you'd be ready for a June date with so little dedicated study time.

Your safest bet in my opinion is to take it next September...use the whole three months of summer to study and wait till the 2018 cycle to apply. I've seen a lot of people take summer mcats for that cycle and not get in. I've also seen someone with a 25 mcat get tons of MD interviews who applied June 1st. Applying early would really help...it's totally up to you and how much time you think you need to study and how many 'gap' years your willing to take.

Asking for a friend. He scored a 509 and has a 4.0 GPA from a top-ranked school. Plenty of extra-curriculars. Should he retake?

Depends on what he's aiming for. In general I would say absolutely not. That's a solid score and it sounds like he has a great background to get into some great schools. If he has his heart set on a top ten school then he would probably need a higher MCAT... If he's looking for an acceptance to an MD program I think he's pretty set.

Agreed.

This is what I said to him as well, that he would have a good chance of getting in. I'm applying to dental school right now and I wasn't too sure of the significance of his score, but I know he's not aiming for a top ten school as he just wants to become a surgeon. His thoughts on the 509 was that he feels like his chances of not getting in are quite low and he doesn't want to waste money applying twice when he can take the MCAT for only another couple $100.

Well to help soften the blow of my disappointing MCAT score, I got an interview invitation yesterday! Woohoo!
I got the interview invitation email 2 minutes after I got the email saying my application was complete!
I guess it really does show that schools look at applications holistically, and not just at numbers.

Nice! What school?

But didnt you do their masters program?

Yes. I completed their Masters program with a 3.7 gpa. I was originally waitlisted last cycle. They wanted a 501 MCAT score and by the grace of God, I was able to get a 501 to be accepted this cycle.

I had been out of school for 5 years and knew I needed a SMP to be competitive but then I scored that 494 in January and got waitlisted. Lots of rollercoaster emotions these past few months. So grateful to get in and never have to retake the MCAT again! This was my 5th time retaking it.
