EDIT 12/21/18: This thread is being retired, as the majority of posts (>80 pages) pertain to the old MCAT that is no longer relevant to current applicants. You can find the current "Should I Retake" thread here: Forum Members - Should I Retake the MCAT?

For those of you who are trying to figure out whether you should re-take, this is the thread for you. Post your dilemma here if you want advice from other SDN folks. Please note that you should take the opinions you get from SDN as one source of advice; you would be wise to also consult your premed advisor before making this decision. Here is my personal advice for those considering whether to re-take:

Definitely DO retake:
-if you scored below a 24. Some allopathic schools will screen out students with scores lower than 24, which is about the mean score for all test-takers.
-if you had some kind of major problem during the test that affected your performance (ex. you started puking or running a 102 degree temperature)
-if you took the test without completing the four pre-reqs (one year each of biology, chemistry, physics, and organic) and/or without studying for it
-if you left large numbers of questions blank

Definitely do NOT retake:
-if you scored a 30 or better, especially if all of your individual section scores were an 8 or better
-if your section subscores (the numerical ones) are all good, but you didn't perform well on the writing section (the letter score)

Gray area-it's not obvious what to do:
-if you scored 30+ but with one section below an 8
-if you had some minor nuisances (ex. a noisy test room) during the test and you're not sure if it affected your performance
-if you studied thoroughly for the test and you scored within the range of your practice exams, but your score is in the middle range (24-29)

You already answered my question about retaking in one way, b/c i don't fit any of those categories to retake. However, i got a 11 PS, 8 VR, 11BS, but I have a low gpa (about 3.4), and so i really think I should retake it, but for me i cannot seem to get my verbal score higher. I tried and tried when i was studying for it the first time around, I got 8's on the practice and and 8 on the real thing. So I was just wondering what i should do, but i got a very average mcat score. Thanks any help would be great.

I took the test on 8/7 and got a 29T....I've talked to several people and about half say retake and half say not to. I had a distribution of 10 in ps and bs and a 9 in verbal...im taking biochemistry now and human physiology and maybe genetics in the spring...

do you all think it would be a good idea to retake in maybe may or june? i have final exams the last week of april and i figure that if i study little by little from now until school ends then and then have like a solid month of stepped up studying to tie any loose ends then i should be ok...i took kaplan so if i retake then i will probobly take the class again during the spring semester, a semester in which i will only take the minimum of 12 credits.

sorry to bother you all, but I was wondering your opinion of whether i should retake:
(34Q)
12 bio
10 physical
12 verbal
Q

3.1 overall GPA 🙁
2.7science GPA 🙁

Since GPAs r so low..., I thought Id need at least a 36MCAT to have a dec. LizzyM (GPA*10 + MCAT)composite to even have my file looked at. I believe I can get the 36 but it might not even be worth it.
thanks for your time

I am a reapplicant with a 29 (B-10, P-11, V-8), a couple points improvement from last year. I have a 3.7+ Science GPA and tons of extracurrics- nontraditional and traditional.

Waiting on secondaries right now. Should I re-take the mcat and plan on re-applying next year?

Sadly I must now post in this thread...

So my average AAMC and Kaplan test were both around 37. I ended up with a 32Q.

I'm not applying this cycle, so taking the test again in, say, January wouldn't affect my application.

I obviously don't want to retake this thing, but a 32 is lower than any of the practice test I took.

Any thoughts/opinions are most welcome.

Any advice for 30R?

PS 11
VR 9
BS 10

I'm torn because I scored much higher for PS and BS on the practice exams (12-13), but I'm afraid my VR will go down. Yes, sadly enough, I was excited about the 9 in VR. After leaving the test center, I thought I had gotten a 3 or 4 on that section. Anyways, the schools I'm aiming for are Ohio State, New York University, New York Medical College, University of Maryland, and Boston University. Any one of those would be 👍.

I know these schools are competitive, so would 30R is good enough? My GPA is 4.0/Biology. Thanks!

Need advice guys.

Canadian citizen here. Master's student in engineering. Undergrad in engineering. Undergrad GPA around 3.62.

MCAT Last year August 2008
VR: 8
PS: 13
BS: 11
WS: Q
C: 32Q

Was an okay score. I thought I could do better so wrote again this year but...

MCAT August 2009

VR: 9
PS: 11
BS: 13
WS: O
C: 33O

I am satisfied with 9 in VR. I think that's pretty much my standard. But PS is supposed to be my strength. Also, I wrote the writing section in the same way as last time but it's not that important and I think O is okay.....

Does this count as an improved score? I went up in VR/BS but went down in PS/WS. Composite is up by 1.

I don't really feel like writing it one more time....

Hey all,

So I got majestic 23N on my MCATs and basically what I'm wondering is, is it even worth it to try and retake the MCATs and apply again next year. I've heard they average your scores and it may not even be worth it to retry. Here some points worth considering.
- I have about a 3.5 from top schools (which most admissions people I've talked to say is competitive considering where I went to school)
- A wealth of research and volunteer experience including publications
- I've traveled abroad for medical mission trips
- Some of my aamc practice test scores were 99th percentile, and the rest were well above a 23 (I guess I just get really really bad test anxiety..or something)

Thanks

DO NOT retake. You have solid scores on all the sections, and if you take the test again, your score might even go DOWN. Look what happened to this person who retook a 33:

FREAKING a.

august 2007: 10 B, 13 P, 10 V, Q W = 33
august 2008: 12 B, 11 P, 8 V, R W = 31

I'm freaking ticked off about Verbal right now. Retake? What are my chances do you think at UCLA?

I took the MCAT twice already.

27R .. exact score, looks like i didn't improve after studying for 1.5 months!

Should i even bother retaking again or just giving up completely?? I don't know what to do. VR is killing me.
Is there anybody or someone you know that improved significantly that retook 3 times??
any advice can help
thanks!

There are many people that got an amazing score after 3 times. A 27 is not a horrible score and you can still get into some MD schools with that MCAT. So, I guess it depends on how much you think you can improve if you can retake. If you think you can get a 30+ (with a 9+ verbal), I think it's completely worth it to retake.

August 2007

PS 8
BS 9
VR 9
WS R
Total: 26R

August 2008

PS 9
BS 11

I wonder if the adcoms are going to look down on this because it really isn't a huge increase from my first write

Comments?

Thanks for the reply! I'm from canada.. so that 6 in VR will just not cut it at all! I was thinking of buying the EK Verbal reasoning strategy book and as well as practice reading online articles. Do you think EK would be helpful?

EK verbal was weird i thought. They always preach main idea main idea and their questions were all silly detail questions.

I see where they are going, because the real test is more or less like that, but Ek goes overboard with their 'go back to the passage' questions.

Sadly I must now post in this thread...

Well so I just had a nice chat with my boss, chair of research at a department at Penn. He pretty much said that it's not terribly important where you went to school at his stage in the game. With my current stats, I should be able to get in somewhere good. However, he said if my heart was set on somewhere like Penn or Northwestern, he'd take it again and go for 35 (or higher).

Obviously not earth-shattering news, but figured I'd share. I'm leaning towards a retake, but I'll decide this weekend for sure.

^ I'm thinking about retaking in January also, and hoping I haven't been rejected yet so i can at least update my schools. My situation is a little less desirable than yours though... i took in August 07 and scored 8PS 9VR 12BS P--> 29P. I applied last year (VERY LATE) got one interview--> waitlisted--> rejected. I retook this year and scored 10PS 7VR 10BS L... I pretty much expected my first score walking out. My second score i was SHOCKED by (to say the least, i posted about it somewhere around here). Anyway, my AAMC average was 35ish. I never scored a 7 in verbal in my life, not even on last years diag. And bio was exceptionally low for me. couple that with having a strong writing background and i was convinced that was not my test being scored. Whatev. I'm still skeptical. Anyway my GPA is 3.83 science 3.79 overall. I applied early and broadly but i am so incensed by the discrepancy in my scores i can see myself retaking even if i'm accepted already just to appease myself  (I wouldn't really do this...i don't think...but sheesh!)

^ I'm thinking about retaking in January also, and hoping I haven't been rejected yet so i can at least update my schools.

My situation is similar to yours: despite consistently averaging 35 on my practice tests (10 PS 13 VR 12 BS), I have scored well below that on the real thing, twice. MCAT #1 (7/8/08): 30S (7-12-11); MCAT #2 (8/15/08): 31S (7-13-11). Both times, the problem in PS was not finishing the section (which I was always able to do in practice tests); the first time I left 8-9 questions blank, and the second time it was only 4. But the scores came out the same, which shocked me. I guess since the second MCAT was easier, the curve did me in even though I finished more questions.

I'm really frustrated, because I feel that the crappy PS score will destroy my chances at most of the schools I applied to (mid-tiers, with a few "stretch" schools thrown in). I would have been a solid candidate for my dream school with a 3.6 BCPM and a 35 MCAT, but they seem totally out of reach now. I'm seriously wondering whether I should even finish my last few secondaries.

Should I retake a 30R (PS 11 BS 10 VR 9)? My GPA is 4.0...but the reason I want to retake is because my top choices for OOS schools are University of Maryland, Boston University, Ohio State University, and NYU. They're all competitive/favor in-state, and their average MCAT is usually from 32-34. I'm not sure I'll have a chance with a 30R. Thanks for any advice!

PS: 6 🙁
VR: 12
BS: 8
WS: O
Overall: 26O 😕

I have never been any good at chemistry...any advice from those of you who did well on the PS section? I'll have to retake sometime I'm afraid. Not proud of myself at all right now. Any positive feedback would be great. Thanks.

You have an outstanding verbal score, but thats great, b/c the sciences I feel are the easiest to bring up, b/c that requries more memorizing and practice problems. The way I improved PS (i suck at chem too) was just go over the material and then practice as many physical sciences problems as you can, you will notice an improvement. I went from getting 7's and 8 to getting an 11 on the real thing. So its very much so possible. Same thing with biology, I cannot emphasize enough to just practice (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE REVIEWING FOR PRACTICING)....many people make this mistake). I took it recently, and the MCATS throws some curveballs at you, so its your ability to reason (not memorize) that helps...which can only be augmented through practice. I would definetly retake with your score, b/c you have a fixed verbal, and with 10's and 11's on sciences you will be a great candidate. I had the opposite problem, my verbal was bad....and that I feel is much more difficult to improve....

sorry to bother you all, but I was wondering your opinion of whether i should retake:

No i would really recommend that you do not retake it, you have a very good score and a difference between a 34 and a 36 is not big (if you get 34+ you are already in the elite category). If I were you I would do a post bac or SMP or MS and show them that you can get good grades, b/c from your application it shows that you are a good standardized test taker, but you can't handle science classes. Taking MCATs again will not prove any differently.

Hi! I just got my scores back today. I'm happy with the overall score just not the spread.

PS: 14
VR:9
BS: 12
Overall: 35P

I know that 9 is still a fairly good score it's just that I have a low gpa (3.4) and really need to find some way to compensate. Do you think that the spread and low verbal will hurt me?? And if so, is it worth retaking?

i'm one of the 8/22 MCATers...and ya got my score yesterday..and had about 30 something hours to soak it in...as i posted in the 8/22 Club, i'm not estatic about my score i'm also not saddened by it...11P/11V/11B/S...

my averages on AAMCs were around 13.5P/10V/12.5B/Q(from TPR)...i prepared for about 7 weeks and took the exam...

i know i can do better on physics and bio as my 8/22 score did not reflect my major (elec. engr) and my AAMC scores...

i'm in a dilemma rite now and i'm still tinking if i should retake...i started off at a 80% no retake..and now i'm down to around 50/50...what is everyone's take?

and if this helps...these are my goals...
top 1-20 schools...i'd be very very happy but not expecting..(ex: harvard, ucsf, upenn)
20-60 schools...i'd be pretty content (uci, ucdavis, nyu)
60-rest...i'd be a bit disappointed but i'd still go (it's a med school)

my stats...if i continue wut i'm doing..i'd applyl with 3.9ish from a UC...wut should i do, retake/no retake? also i'm one of those ppl who are very insecure..like i strive for an A+ so i can ensure to get an A- or A

muttley87 & confusedchild: Neither of you should retake the test. It would be a mistake and not worth your time.

muttley87: The only possible exception to the above would be if you're applying solely to Canadian medical schools.

confusedchild: Random side note, but I don't think UCI ranks that high. They had and still have, plenty of trouble. I believe they've also come close to losing their accreditation.

I'm gearing up for a re-take...thoughts?

11PS/10V/11BS, for a total of 32P

I feel like I need a higher mcat score in order to "validate" the CC courses I've taken.

I have a set of Berkeley Review books that I can use. I used TPR before (just the books, not the course). I was averaging 35 on my practice aamc's, but then again, those felt much easier than the actual mcat.

Complete waste of time. You have a very good GPA, solid MCAT, solid ECs and you probably speak Spanish. You shouldn't need to validate anything to yourself because you already have a great application. That should be more than enough validation. Plus, the inherent risks of retaking with that score could easily put you in a bad situation.

For those of you who are trying to figure out whether you should re-take, this is the thread for you. Post your dilemma here if you want advice from other SDN folks. total:30P
English is my second language and I've been to US for just two years. My AAMC practice score higher in PS and BS (~13), but same in VR.
I'm now in senior year, and my GPA is 3.97 (only got a A- in a history class, damn), good research experience, got a honorable scholarship in the state university, no volunteer and clinical exposure yet (planning to do it this year).
I'm thinking about apply for the 2010 cycle, apply for the state medical school (ave MCAT 32.82P, and accepts a lot of local residents).
So basically I'll have a whole lot of time before I actually submit my application, should I study more and retake?

I'm mostly interested in applying to Canadian schools... so I'm questioning if I should retake or not... is my score competitive enough?
GPA is just a 3.75 too.. any advice?

Thanks!

It somewhat depends on the state, but you might want to consider taking a retake specifically to bring up your verbal. A 7 is just a little too low. Check out the MCAT FAQ sticky for verbal help.

You should call the schools you're interested in and see if they have a cut-off or if a 9 would hinder your application more than usual. I believe some schools have a cut-off at 9 and some 10. Other than that, your score and GPA are fine.

Problem is obviously my verbal. I had the timing down but the passages were longer than any of the practice ones so I was a bit panicky. However the real problem is that a lot of the schools don't think 8 in VR from what the MSAR books is telling me or at least the ones I'm aiming for. GPA is a 3.8 but will probably go down because I'm taking Biochem this year.

Ah yes, my averages for VR were about 9 and some 10s here and there. English is my first language so this is kind of discouraging. I'm think even if I were to retake, would getting a 1pt increase in VR be worth all that hassle?

Hi everybody, thanks in advance for your replies.

So MCAT is 30P--VR:9, PS:9, BS:12, WS😛

I was scoring on average 35-36 on both Kaplan and AAMC tests so that's the only reason I'm thinking retake. Any advice on this would be really helpful.

Please check my MDapps for additional info on gpa etc.

my first choice med school is IU

.

I too was scoring an avg. of 35-37 on both Kaplan and AAMC tests and finished with a dismal 30P this past August. To make matters worse, I am applying this year and dont feel confident whatsoever with this MCAT score. If you have time, by all means retake it if you are not satisfied with your score. A situation you dont want to be in is being unsure about your MCAT scores and whether or not schools will think its good enough. However, if you're just trying to gain admittance to your state school or a school with about a 30 MCAT average, then you should be okay.

I am with alibai3ah. You need not retake the test but concentrate on improving your GPA through a SMP. Apply to smp.georgetown.edu

There is also an SMP at EVMS. There is one at Loyola. there isi one at RFU. There is one at NJMS. There is one at BU. There is one at USF. There is one at Drexel. These are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. there are others in NY area as well.

thanks everyone for the help. hopefully ill get lucky this cycle, but ill be applying to SMPs

Really not sure what to do...

30S: 10/9/11

GPA ~ 3.6

I reallyyy wanna get into a US allopathic school, preferably some state schools. I averaged around 29/30 on practice tests but I thought i killed the MCAT...I guess not...

I have time (only became a junior this year).

Would it be advisable to retake?

Hey everyone,

I am wondering if I should retake this coming summer and I am looking into Canadian schools.

I received a 10PS /9 VR/ 11 BS and an S for WS, composite 30S.

My GPA is 3.96 and I have extracurriculars, clubs, volunteers, 2 + years of research experience plus publications in scientific journals. I studied for the test during a full time research job so I am thinking I might be able to do better if I concentrate on studying for a solid 2 months instead.

Any thoughts? thanks a lot!

I know that the average MCAT score accepted to LSU-NO was a 28 this year. I got a 25 with a 3.85 gpa and good ECs. Does anyone have any idea what kind of chance I have? I'm just trying to decide if I need to start studying for the MCAT again.

Thanks for any help!

Hi everyone, i need help

Right now i'm in my last year (+summer) and will probably end up graduating with around a 3.25 (2.8 humanities and stuff, 3.4 science & engineering). I just got my mcat score yesterday which was pretty low compared to my practice tests. Practice tests were between 30 and 34 and i got a 10/10/9/M on the real thing. I plan on retaking in january and hope to get around a 33 at least.

My real question is what I should do, i am not going to apply to start in fall 09 but would like to start fall 10 or winter 10 if that is an option. I have had a few jobs and some volunteer hours, but my main ec is research where i've been for 2 years (just published my first paper last week).

So what should i be doing in that off year and until i graduate. Do you think a post-bac program would be helpful because of my low grades or is there something better i can do. Thanks

Why don't you study more and try to retake the MCAT and pull it up to a 30? It looks like you have the sciences down more or less, you just need to practice more for Verbal. Trust me, it's possible.
With an improved score and a 4.0 GPA, you could even get into MD.
