EDIT 12/21/18: This thread is being retired, as the majority of posts (>80 pages) pertain to the old MCAT that is no longer relevant to current applicants. You can find the current "Should I Retake" thread here: Forum Members - Should I Retake the MCAT?

For those of you who are trying to figure out whether you should re-take, this is the thread for you. Post your dilemma here if you want advice from other SDN folks. Please note that you should take the opinions you get from SDN as one source of advice; you would be wise to also consult your premed advisor before making this decision. Here is my personal advice for those considering whether to re-take:

Definitely DO retake:
-if you scored below a 24. Some allopathic schools will screen out students with scores lower than 24, which is about the mean score for all test-takers.
-if you had some kind of major problem during the test that affected your performance (ex. you started puking or running a 102 degree temperature)
-if you took the test without completing the four pre-reqs (one year each of biology, chemistry, physics, and organic) and/or without studying for it
-if you left large numbers of questions blank

Definitely do NOT retake:
-if you scored a 30 or better, especially if all of your individual section scores were an 8 or better
-if your section subscores (the numerical ones) are all good, but you didn't perform well on the writing section (the letter score)

Gray area-it's not obvious what to do:
-if you scored 30+ but with one section below an 8
-if you had some minor nuisances (ex. a noisy test room) during the test and you're not sure if it affected your performance
-if you studied thoroughly for the test and you scored within the range of your practice exams, but your score is in the middle range (24-29)

hey folks

I got a 34S, have a 3.65 GPA from a tough undergrad, am applying MD/PhD. I should have very solid lors, my essays (based on what people who edited it said) are great. I'm really passionate about doing MD/PhD, and hopefully I've communicated this across in my essays. I'm a CA resident, and my school list is this;

UCSF
UCSD
UCI
UCLA
UCD
USC
Stanford
NW
UChicago
UWash
WashU
Mt Sinai
Cornell
Columbia
Brown

I'd love to stay in-state (UCI,USC,UCSD,UCLA are my top choices at this point), but what do you guys think? Am i tempting Providence (not referring to Brown) by applying this cycle? or should I retake if I think I can do better (which I think I can)? My app should get verified sometime next week.

Congrats on the score! I like the Providence pun; that alone should get you an acceptance. I also got a 34, and I am applying to all of the Cali MDs, but I don't know how much more competitive the MD/PhD programs are. I would think you're numbers would at least get your foot in the door at most of the Cali Schools you mentioned (SD/SF may be difficult).

I know SD is tough because I applied to Mayo and got their secondary (they screen), but no secondary from SD (Not sure what numbers they are looking for, but I guess even more stringent than Mayo!). Hell, I even volunteered in the Burn Unit at the UCSD medical center, but still no love. I didn't apply to SF, but I am sure competition is very keen, but don't let me dissuade you from applying.

I don't think a retake is warranted, though others may disagree. I am just glad that you aren't applying MD, cuz then I would have to compete against you! Keep us posted on your progress, I am sure you will get an acceptance somewhere!

Hello everybody!:hello:
I'm preparing for retaking the MCAT and was searching for more practice tests.
I came across onlinemcatprep.com and took their short sample test. It seemed very good and I really liked the explanations to the question. Has anybody used them for MCAT preparation?

I have a 3.68 Cumulative GPA, and 3.74 Science GPA. I am a non-science major. I have 1.5 years of research and ~200 hrs of hospital volunteer. I also did some community service. I took the June 18 MCAT and scored 25 (9PS, 8VR, 8BS). I am currently taking the TPR course, but am consistently scoring between 24-27 on the diags. I already signed up for Sept. 5 date. Any advice on what I need to score, whether retaking will help, or anything.

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I first took the MCAT last summer and scored a 24O on it, which was unfortunately about how well I was doing on the practice tests at the time. I spent much time studying this summer and was consistently scoring between 27-33 and took the 7/31 test. The test seemed fine until I got to the bio section which was not at all what I was expecting. The first several passages were genetics experimental setups derived from journal articles, but were not necessarily hard as they were tricky. I spent way too much time on those several passages and had to rush through the remaining questions with no time left over (generally I have at least some time left over for the bio section). I felt terrible coming out of that test. Although my test scores won't be returned until Sept 1st, I signed up for the Aug 14th mcat just in case I should retake before the end of the cycle. I chose not to sign up for a Sept test bc once school starts I will have very little time to devote to the mcat, especially since I spent the summer studying for it. I know that I can simply not go to the test this Friday and that it will not show on my record (expect that I wasted a bunch of money...which in the scheme of this whole process actually isn't that much by comparison). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

thanks Segovia! your response makes me feel SO much better - my family had been really quite upset about my score, as I had been scoring significantly higher than the score I ended up with. Oh well, I hope things work out well for both of us! Anyone else care to chip in?

premed21: Hye man just to give you some support: i took the TPR course and scored between 22 -27... Then i took the real test right after and got a 33. The TPR tests are very hard compared to the real thing. I think you will do well. Good luck

can you do a dry run of the MCAT?

let's say I take the MCAT, I don't think I did well and I waver my score (i know you can do that with pharamacy). Will med schools find out I already took it once when I actually decide to submit my score?

and let's say I choose to submit the score the day of the test and it's bad (i mean like 24 or something). how do med schools view that even i I score, lets say a 30 next year

the reason I'm asking is because I have not had a lot of time to study the MCATs this summer and I'm taking it in a couple weeks. I've been doing medical research and I didn't realize how much time the job took up until I'm doing projects and writing papers. so Now i'm wondering if I should just drop the test, get a partial refund, take the test and not submit my score (just as a dry run). Or take the test and risk it screwing me over in the future

thanks for the help

if you can PM me with answers, that would be a life saver, I'm really busy with work and MCATs so I don't visit this fourm as often as i should

PS: if it helps to understand my situation better, I'm in Canada and are only applying to ontario medical schools, I have a GPA of around ~3.8. I have volunteer experiences, work experience and medical research experience for my character sketch

airbornemedic: Medical schools see ALL of your scores. You cannot pick and choose which ones they see. Even if a school takes only your best score, they will still know what you got your first time. If you aren't ready, don't take it. If you want to get the MCAT experience, take the test, but make sure you VOID. When you void, it's like you never took the test outside of paying the AAMC.

thanks a million, I was just scared there was no void option, I thought the med schools will know I already took the test once when I wasn't ready and can't back out because the deadline for rescheduling/canceling is passed

I will still know my score if I void it right? just it will be sent to me, not med schools

No, you will not know your score if you void.

Hi,
I just took the July 31st MCAT, and I really feel like I bombed it. I have sent out my primaries, but my mcat score doesn't come out till September 1st. I was wondering if I should retake the MCAT on sep. 10th?? I have a really high GPA , and a good solid app, and don't know if I should send out my secondaries till I've seen my score. Will a september mcat be considered for my application for 2010??? And should I send out my secondaries before I see my score? If anyone can please give me some advice that would be great. Thank you!

Hi (I hope it's okay to post here, I didn't want to make a new thread),

I started off with a 15 and have been scoring 17, 16, 17 with TPR practice tests. I took AAMC#5 last week and scored 24 (7PS, 8VR, 9BS). Now, I only have a month to prepare, is that enough, or should I postpone it until jan?

My GPA is somewhere around 3.5-3.6 range, if this helps. I was planning to aim for 30+. Can I do this within a month?

Thank you thank you!

Hey! I just took the mcats and i got 29P (9 verbal, 10 ps, and 10 bs)

generally speaking i do better in the ps and bs but i do worse in the verbal (in my case a 9 was a pretty big miracle..)

should i rewrite?

a few side notes... I'm Canadian, and i have a cGPA sitting at roughly 3.71
I want to apply both Canada and US.

Stop crying over your fantastic scores everyone you should all be grateful you didn't get this:

Series Test Date Verbal Reasoning (VR) Physical Sciences (PS) Writing Sample (WS) Biological Sciences (BS) Total * AMCAS Release 37 May 2007 06 08 J 08 22J Y

Yea, I know exactly how you feel... I got a 22O (8's in VR and BS and a 6 in PS)! And I was doing well on my practices, too!

I know Michigan State is considering the Sept. 12th MCAT as the last chance for the 2010 cycle, so maybe others schools have a similar cut-off date?

should I retake?
27L
VR: 4 🙁🙁
PS: 12
BS: 11
I don't know what happened with my VR.
English is my second language, so I don't expect too much for VR. But I think 4 is too low.
I usually got between 6-8 in my practice tests. Any advice for retake or not??😕😕
good job on the PS & Bio but i'd definately retake and try and make the verbal higher. It's impressive that you have a 27 when english is your second language. good luck to you 🙂

Again, I'm going to keep it brief.

Nimbly:
That MCAT is probably too low for OHSU and most MD schools. I suggest you retake.

wdhero: Unfortunately, your Maryland choices are rather thin and you really only have one option, University of Maryland. Actually, I'm not sure if U of Maryland is an option because it looks like they have cutoffs at 9 for all sections. However, you may have an okay chance at some other schools. If you don't mind going out of state too much, then don't retake. Well, you'd probably have to go out of state anyway.

Bmewriter: You might have a good shot at lower tier schools and possible a decent chance at mid tier schools. Everything looks good except your 28. If you are pretty sure you can do better, I suggest a retake.

clemson55: You'll have to retake if you want to go to an MD school. That score is also rather low for DO schools. Your ECs will not compensate for a 24. You should be aiming for at least a 30.

premed21: You'll have to retake. You need to analyze your your mistakes from your last study cycle and fix them. A 27 will not help you.

onebeautifulday: It's unlikely you'll hit 30+ consistently in a month. I suggest you delay until next summer. If you don't have school, then January is fine.

Kibou: First off, I'm not sure about Canadian schools, so take my advice with a large grain of salt. I think Canadian schools have cutoffs at 30. Furthermore, Canadian schools are pretty competitive, so you should probably retake. Lastly, a 29P will not get you far in the US, especially because you aren't a resident.

Curious what you all think. I graduated in '99 with a 3.33 in chemical engineering. Since then, I have volunteered an average of 10-15 hours a month, moved through the ranks pretty quickly in industry, and then started a healthy business. I ended up with a 30R (PS 12, VR 8, BS 10). My wife and I are grounded here in New England, so I'll be applying to the schools around here. I think I have a lot to talk about in an interview, but will a 30R get me an interview? I really wanted a 33-35 to make up for my GPA. Thoughts? Thanks!

zank: You face an uphill battle for the New England area. Most of the schools are far out of your reach. The other schools may favor in-state residents, but not by much. Furthermore, your GPA hurts your chances. Lastly, have you finished the pre-med requirements? If you haven't you must do so. Overall, if you're set on New England, you'll probably have to retake. You might also have problems obtaining the necessary letters of recommendation.

Just found out my score from the July 17th exam - 7 VR, 10 PS, 11 BS - 28S total. I have a 3.7 GPA, 3.6 Science. Should I retake the exam on Sept. 12th? Or should I just try and apply? English is my first language and I live in WA so UW is my only option for in-state schools. Even then, I'm not sure if I have much of a shot at getting into UW. What do people think? Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer.

11 VR, 11 PS, 10 BS - 32S

cGPA: 3.62, sGPA: 3.58

CA Resident, would prefer to stay in CA, but using the spreadsheet tells me I am in trouble for most CA schools, especially for low BS. I feel like I could maybe do better in BS, but am afraid of dropping the other subsections.

Score: 10 PS 9 VR 11 BS
Total: 30M

I am not sure if I should retake the Exam early in September. I was averaging a few points higher on the practice AAMC exams. I am also concerned about my Essay score.

Undergrad GPA: 3.44
Post Bacc: 3.89
Cumulative GPA: 3.54
Cumulative BCPM: 3.56

Have a lot of EC's and leadership both as an undergraduate and postbacc: volunteer work, varsity athletics, volunteer research assistant ect. Would it be worth retaking the exam in early september?? Not sure where I stand as far as getting into an M.D. program.

Should I retake after a retake?

First score 9 PS 7VR 10 BS 26S
Retake 9 PS 10VR 10 BS 29R😡
definitely lower than my AAMC averages this time around...I am not sure what happened. I felt somewhat confident and I thought I totally bombed verbal.

I only improved in one section GRRR!
Does that look bad?
If I retake, I will not be complete until October

I am a FL resident and plan to apply to 20+schools. My cGPA is 3.8 and sGPA ~3.7

What do you think?

Ugh. I have too many posts in this thread.

deck13: Your chances are pretty poor at getting into UW or any other allopathic medical school. I suggest you retake.

printer: Your MCAT isn't the problem here, it's your GPA. It's low for all CA schools. If your GPA doesn't show an upward trend, you may want to consider post-bac work to bring up your GPA. Again, your MCAT is fine. Also, you might have a shot at some lower-tier out of state schools.

Hpotter: US medical schools don't care about your WS unless if it's in the J-L range. I think you have a decent shot at lower and mid tier schools.

Ryler: Did you retake your old practice tests? If you did, that's why your score is lower than your practice test average. Yes, it does look somewhat bad to retake a 26 and get a 29. Furthermore, your GPA isn't high enough to compensate for the low MCAT. I don't think you should have applied without a solid MCAT, however, that's over and done with. Should you retake? ONLY if you are positive you can get a couple points above a 30. If you retook and got a 30, I doubt medical schools would care at this point and a 30 still leaves you below average for most FL schools.

I was wondering if I still have a fighting chance for DO school. I got a 25 L, unfortunately I fell asleep during one of my essay prompts, thus the low writing score. I also bombed verbal. I took the July second MCAT and got a 11/5/9 (PS/VR/BS). I have a 4.0 GPA and did plenty of EC. If you're wondering, English is my first language. Unfortunately, I was never good at English, even though I talk a mile- a -minute. LOL

Hi all,

I'm in an interesting situation because I went through undergrad (biochemistry) and never really considered medical school. After graduating in the spring I decided to write the june 18 mcat and scored a 32m... 10 PS, 10 VR and 12 BS. The low writing score is what scares me (I didn't finish the first essay which likely hurt a lot). I wasn't surprised by the low score though as it was a very last minute decision to take the test so my study time was limited. I have a cumulative GPA of around 3.77-3.8 depending on how its calculated and my major might be a little higher. I'm in canada and don't think the "m" for the writing section will be good enough for canadian schools. I'm wondering though if it would be worth applying in the states this year? Do I have a chance even though i'm from canada? I'm sure I could improve the mcat score a lot if I studied but if this is good enough I might just go ahead and apply this year. I have research experience and some volunteer as well. Thanks for the help!

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any particular med schools that average out the MCAT scores if the MCAT has been taken more than once.

Thank you!

Scrubs920: Unfortunately you will have to retake. Both your VR and WS scores are too low.

Renegade:
I suggest you send a PM to Vihsadas since he's a fellow Canadian. He should be able to provide you better advice than me. If you have solid ECs, you might want to try both Canadian and US medical schools. I don't think you have a great shot at Canada because of the M. This is one of the few times when WS score matters.

This is kind of a hypothetical... I recently took the 8/25, and feel like I bombed just the verbal. Lets say i hit my averages for the sciences which was 14/14. Whats the lowest verbal I could get without having to take a retake? I was thinking 8 or lower I'll retake. what do you think?

Hey guys!
Wanted feedback on my MCAT scores...

11 VR
10 PS
09 BS
W: Q
30Q

It seems like a lot of people consider retaking when they have scores above 30. Is 30 still sufficient if you have a GPA above 3.6? Thanks for any feedback.

BTW, I'm applying to schools in MD and ALSO mid / low tier schools OOS. Any recommendations?

August 2008:
PS 12
VR 7
BS 11
W P
30P

July 2009:
PS 14
VR 8
BS 13
W O
35O

Any thoughts? By the way, English is not my first language.

Thats not a bad score at all it depends what med shcool youre trying to get into though....i think itd be more ideal to have sayyy 12 12 11 so it doesnts seem like you have a week point if you want to get into those top schools ....8 and O are the averages for VR and W sections...but since youve already taken it twice and defintely improved, i dont think you should retake...youll definitely get into a good med school : )

I just took the test July 17 2009 seems like I scored what you just said...almost

BS :14
PS : 13
VR : 8
W: M
35M

Im defintely planning to retake.....really pissed at myself for doing soooo bad on the writing and the VR. I dont know anyone thats scored this low on the writing lol.

anyways

SOunds like ur trying to get into an IVY league school or something...Id say if u think ur gonna get a skewed score shoot for 10-11 as ur lowest section and at least 35-36 total and ull be ok.

Here it is

PS-9
VR-7
BS-10
WS-O

26O. my gpa is 3.72, and my science gpa 3.71. Ec are decent, and a year of research. I applied to allo and DO school, but I want to get into allo. what are my chances?

hey man i'm in a similar situation...

PS-10
VR-8
BS-8
WS-L

26L. i don't know how i got an L in the writing section...sounds like the graders were complete *******s. i guess the kaplan strategy for writing is a bunch of bull****. well anyways my overall gpa is 3.6 and my science is a 3.73. my extracurriculars include vp of a student organization, research for the past 2 years, free clinic work for the past 2 years, graduating with honors and research distinction, and other volunteer work in the community and in foreign countries. what are my chances of getting into a US or puerto rican MD school?

so i just got my mcat score and it is majorly lopsided

ps 14
vr 8
bs 11
writing Q total 33Q

based on practice exams and how i felt after the test i was expecting a 13-14 ps
10-11 vr
11-12 bs
N-P writing

science GPA = 3.1
non science GPA =~3.97
cumulative GPA = 3.51

I've got one major EC that I've been involved in all 4 years of college, one summer of hospital volunteer work with some other non-medical related volunteer work, I'll be third generation MD in my family, and I am a minority. I just don't know about that verbal score. English is my first language, so and 8 kinda stinks.

so what do you think? retake or not? It would suck to retake and not improve.

Just curious what you guys think. I am applying to mostly mid range medical schools.

3.55GPA, Science is around a 3.5

MCAT:
PS:11
V:10
BS:9
WS:R

I definitely went to an above average university and have good research and medical experience.

hi everyone - i would really appreciate anyone's input here. i posted this on another thread, but i hope to get more feedback here.

ok here goes: ive taken the mcat 3x in 3 yrs and here they are:

08/2006:
6VR, 12PS, 11BS = 29M

04/2007:
8VR, 9PS, 12BS = 29R

08/2009:
10VR, 9PS, 10BS = 29R

notice a pattern here? 29 is now my least favorite number 🙁

i can't seem to break 30. my cum GPA is 3.3 (3.2 science), got an MPH where one case study got published in a book and a systematic review is being presented at a poster session for the american dietetic association, have a patient safety fellowship and working on a medication reconciliation improvement project, lots of clinical exposure, research + 3 publications, a good bit of ECs, good LORs... i applied very broadly including DO schools

i have no idea why i can't break 30. can anyone please give me some insight? thanks in advance!

If you're averaging 14s on your sciences, you're def shooting for top-tier schools, and they typically want verbal scores of, like, 10-11. If you got a 9VR, even with two 14s, that's eye-raising. If you get an 8, I'd definitely retake.

Now for my question!

I got my score yesterday - 11VR, 14PS, 11BS, writing: S, and while I'm super-happy with the score, I can't help but wonder if PS is too different from my BS and VR, and if that'll raise a red flag or anything.
I could use some reassurance from a wise sage!

Thanks!

July 30th mcat score

bio-11
verb - 9
phys - 9

29Q

I go to UIC thats Univ. of IL at chicago

Science GPA 3.82 (possible community college inflation) but I do have a
overall GPA of 3.69 at UIC
overall community college GPA 3.82

3.74 over all

I have 2 semesters of research experience in a biochem lab, im a biochem major. I have 2 one week trips to hurricane katrina, 2 and 3 years after it happened tho. I have about 7-8 months of hospital ER volunteer experience.

My practice test avg for AAMC was a 33-34. so im dissappointed, but there is nothing i can do this cycle. so what do you all think??

thanks in advance

I'm in a horrible place right now and don't know what to do.

My score: PS: 12 VR: 9 BS: 11 (32Q)

I'm a non-trad, my bcmp GPA is on the lower side, so I really needed a great MCAT to prove myself. Everything else on my application is more than solid- I have a Master's degree, incredible ECs, lots of clinical experience (4 years EMT).

I wanted to apply MD/PhD, but that dream has come to an abrupt end.

I want to retake the MCAT, because I know I can do better (my practice test average was a 37, the lowest I ever got was a 35, so I am super shocked about my score).

At the same time, I don't know if I can wait another cycle, I'm already several years out of college. Don't know what to do. Try it with this score and plan to retake in January if things aren't going well (ie. no interviews/all rejections).

Don't bother applying now and just wait and re-take?

Wow, I really never expected to be in this position, it feels horrible.

I sat for the 9/10/09 MCAT and thought I was doing pretty good until 5 minutes before the end of the biology section. I was on the last passage and my screen turned white - I ran to the technician who restarted my computer - everything was ok but I had lost two minutes. Has anyone heard of this kind of situation before?
