***Official Temple C/O 2012 Acceptance Thread***

It's going to be tough going from an undergraduate school that won two national championships back to back in both football and basketball, to one that barely wins a game in their season 😀

On the positive note, at least the city won't be turned upside down every game.

Any Nebraska football fans going to Temple? We should take a road trip there to see a game, now thats real football. Amen.

Anti nebraska fan here. Last season when i was at the game nebraska got worked by CU. Yeah yeah. Damn that was a fun game. But i would be down to go see them play.

ok, so i was reading the packet that they sent us

i know for sure if someone brings a car we can easily be living in roxobourgh (sp?) either at henry at the park (4 bedroom, and rooms are huge) or summit park, summit gardens, woodmere, etc which is roughly $500-$600 a room and probably $40 bucks utilities plus we all pitch in for a parking permit + gas which i wouldnt think is much or we can look at Center City (Rittenhouse Square, Art Museum, Washington Square) and find a place there which I also think wouldnt be too expensive....

any takers?

I read through my packet today, and I thought the Roxborough area seemed really nice. I'd definitly be down to split a larger apartment.
A little info about me: 23 year old male from Tampa, Florida. Single, nonsmoker... dont have any pets. I like golf, tennis, hockey, snowboarding, working out. I'm clean, quiet, and respectful as a room mate. I will be bringing my car. I also like long walks on the beach....(Ha😛).

I went up to Philly the other day and went to a fair number of the places listed in the housing packet, so I thought I'd share my thoughts. Most of the areas students seem to live in are a 15-20 min drive (we timed it in 8:30 am traffic) or a 10 min subway ride (didn't verify that). I ended up renting a room with a temple dental upperclassmen in the northeast philly (Mayfair neighborhood), because he seemed cool and had a really nice place, but second to that I recommend the places right on Henry avenue in Roxboro or due north of the school up in Elkins park. Specifically, there are a bunch of places right where ridge avenue and Henry diverge, including henry on the park apartments and a collection of complexes called the summit hill apartments. These run in the 1200-1300 dollar range for two bedrooms places and are pretty decent apartments. Personally I liked summit the best, it felt like a fun place to live and felt more comfortable, though henry on the park had far more options for room layouts and had some really great two and three bedroom units in the rear buildings (they have seven in all I think) that have gas included in the rent for a pretty good deal. I've seen some online reviews that don't like the new management at henry on the park, but thats just hearsay so I don't know how much I'd worry about it. I think I liked Summit better because it had a more social feel to it, and everyone seemed really nice. They have a big clubhouse with a residents only bar that sounded nice, though we didn't see it.
The nicest place I looked at was called Brookview up in the Elkins park area due north of the school. Its right next to a regional rail station (116 dollars for a monthly pass), and it looked like an easy drive right down broad street. They have a few different layouts, but they're ally very nice looking and the grounds are beautiful to my eyes, with lots of trees and a nice organic sort of layout to the buildings. We looked at a third floor unit (top floor) with a vaulted ceiling in the den and a working wood-burning fireplace, as well as a smart two bedroom/two bath layout that seemed great for privacy. The appliances were good (though not as nice as the brand new ones at henry on the park), and the rooms felt more spacious that they actually were. It was a bit more expensive for the square footage and it didn't seem to be in a very "trendy" neighborhood like the places in manayunk/roxboro, but for someone like me who needs to feel a sense of space and open grounds, it was beautiful. If I didn't find that room to rent up in the mayfair area I likely would have gone with them.
I hope some of that is helpful, I should have posted right when I got back so it would be fresh in my mind, but I'm on spring break so I've been lazy. In general there seem to be plenty of options, though I didn't look to hard at center city or the art museum area so I don't know what its like if you don't have a car.

Looking forward to seeing you all in August!!

yea, im down to move to henry at the park also

their 3 bedroom 3 bathroom is 1400 sq feet and $1700 total ($566 per person) and from the brochure it looks very spacious

their 4 bedroom 3 bathroom is 1600 sq feet and $2200 total ($550 per person)...

seriously that isnt bad...even their deposit is cheap...i think it was like $99 dollars while compare to most other places they want 2 months rent + first month rent...imagine forking over $6k....ouch!!!

i think i am for sure going to CC. definitely want to check out the city first year and then see how it goes from there. I wont have a car so it will be easier also

Well, its settled for me. I move into Henry on the Park on August 1st.

Anyone else planning on moving in there?

I was looking at henry on the park too. Seems like a good fit for me. Do you guys have room mates yet?

as much as i want to live in CC, those the apts shown in the brochures seemed quite nice, especially with the gym. Then again, this might be just to attract students like us to sign up for them. I have a car so it make it harder for me to pick, where as if i didnt, i would live in CC. I really need to get over there and look at both places in person

Yeah i will have a car, but am thinking about CC still. Although im still down for roxy/manayunk.

Do you guys think having a car in cc will be a pain w/ parking (i would definitely rent a space from the place i live).

Also, i will be out there probably end of april if anyone wants to plan a trip then, we could meet up.

its so hard because we live so far away from each other and we all have different schedules going to philly (i am going mid june)....but please tell us which one do you like better....CC or roxo/manayunk

i also need a roomate. we should PM eachother our phone numbers and get in touch, maybe in a group chat or conference call and work something out. i am also planning to live in CC and taking a trip in mid june. what do u guys think?

Temple football is on the up and up. When they got kicked out of their past BCS conference, it really hurt them. They basically became a school for kids who didn't get recruited to play for one or two years, then transfer to a better school. Now that Temple is in a conference, they can recruit better, keep their kids, and (as is the case with all non-BCS conferences) you are playing for a bowl game, and a conference championship. And, weaker conferences are won with Seniors...that being said, now that it looks like Temple is able to keep their kids for more than two years, they should get better. They won a bunch of games this year, and even had two wins "stolen" from them by absolutely horrible officiating. So, while Temple won't ever compete for a national title, they should be a very competitive football team from here on out.

Shoot, there goes my idea of walking on.

Do dental students get free or discounted tickets? I'm down to go watch a few games.

Its All About The "u"!

Well, shouldn't your decision be based on the number of miles away from qdoba or chipotle? 😱😀

And this sucks.... im leaving University of Colorado who for the last four years sucked, but got better to go to an even worse team. CU just got the top recruit for RB (he will destroy) and we have a sweet red shirted freshmen who will now start for us (he is suppose to be amazing too)

Can grad students play collegiate sports if i still have four years of eligibility? Or woudl the schedules basically not allow this to happen. It would be fun to go to tryouts for the team and get worked (since i have never played a day of football in my life), except for catch and intramural.

I hate to break it to you guys, but I don't think you will have any time with dental school. 2nd year you barely have time to do basic bodily support functions (i.e. eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, ect). It's a struggle just to find enough time for sleep and food.

Umm... I can guarantee that given my lackluster physical state and the fact that letsfguad said hes never played football before... were not gonna make the team. I just thought it would be funny to try out and see how bad we get our a**es kicked.

LOL. I think you do have eligibility (there always seems to be some extra-ordinary athlete that is in a Master's program while in sports; ie Alex Smith), but I think I remember reading somewhere in Temple's student handbook or something that the dental school doesn't allow you to play.

I too am leaving my "wheels" behind. CC seems like the best way to be in Philly without a car. I'm told the insurance rates are pretty high. I just got back from visiting downtown and most studios I looked at were at least 1k a month, which might not be so bad without the additional car expenses. I looked at the Metropolitan managed by Historical Landmark Living. I think I am seriously considering signing a lease with them. They are offering July and August move in dates. I also looked at the packard and other places on rent.com. I am curious if other people in CC have found any better deals.

p.s. I hate searching for housing /rental agreements

What do you mean by insurance.... for your car. How would it be worst than it already is? Why would it go up? Just curious cause im going to have a car and i hope my insurance ownt go up.

Ok, but does the handbook say anything about TRYING OUT for a sports team? Thats all I want, just the try out, and the laughs (at my expense).

Hehe, we need to figure this out. I think im going for a safety or wide out position. Hopefully safety..... i can just see the coaches face when i make the team then he has to cut his !"BEST"! player (me) because im in d-school

Car insurance in Philly is INSANE. When I moved from FL, my car insurance went up 4X. I already had high insurance because of the nature of my car, but I could not affor $5,000 a year insurance. I had to sell my car 😡

I dunno, but if you do try out let me know....I need a good laugh in this city. 😉

If you watched college football u would know the "U" stands for university of miami!

The "U"... elaborate? U of U? If so there the best team in Utah but... come on now... Utah is pretty lame when it comes to college football.

We all know real college football takes place in the BIG 12. Oh yeah.

For those of you living at Henry on the Park. An easy way to earn some money:

Put me down as your referral and I get 500 bucks. When I get it I will promptly split the money with you. That will be 250 bucks and you didn't have to do ANYTHING but write down my name and apartment number as your referral.

PM me for my information and you can get yourself 250 bucks.

when is the second deposit due?

Are you kidding me? You better call the school fast.

Haha, sorry guys. I just got a call from Brian yesterday that i was accepted off the waitlist. Just wondering about the deposit since i did not receive the packet yet.

But thanks for your concern.

Do we have any other deadlines other than our orientation. I have both deposits and FASFA in. Just need to finish my last tax return and i will send those to them too.
