Thought every school should have one of these.
Feeling groovy bout starting Temple in the fall.

Anybody else on this boat know if there are health forms to fill out etc... I haven't gotten much except that password to the OWL net.

Still on CCL (out of state)

Anyone get off the CCL recently? I called them last week and they said that CCL applications are being reviewed daily.

I got in off the CCL (out of state) last month.

I thought I'd chime in on the Temple thread during my little study break (usmle step 1 - ugh.)

You should receive a big packet in July with housing, health and other information. You will need to have a physical exam (they will give you a form that your doc needs to fill out), proof of certain immunizations, and have a few titers drawn (Hep B, Varicella, ?others).

Congratulations on your acceptance, and good luck next year!

Does anyone know why Temple doesn't submit information to the USNews and World Report? I can imagine that it is a kind of protest against the ranking criteria used there. Temple received a pretty high rank on that Gourman or Gurman, whatever, report and the school would probably do worse in a ranking system that emphasized research... but does anybody actually know if this is the reason?

Well, unless you have evidence that temple actually does not report to the USNews, they're probably just not on the list as per the USNews methodology. For example, everyone used to presume the reason why Tulane wasnt in USNews because they "didnt report", but when the rabkings went out to number 69 as opposed to the standard top 50 schools this year tulane was in the mid 50s.

food for thought 🙂

Hey guys! Temple just called me this morning and I would ike a little feedback on it from ya'll. I don't know if I should accept the offer because I already have an apartment in east falls and I don't have a car. I liked Temple the best after interview ---- but it is going to be hard to go there without a vehicle, and I was turned off by the probation issues. I feel pretty confused and just want to see some different points of view.

Temple is 2 or 3 stops from the East Falls septa station - Cresson St. & Midvale Ave., on the R6 line. About a 10 minute ride max. You could also go from the Queen Lane station on the R8 but that takes about a half hour. Depends on where u live in east falls.

Shouldn't be a problem without a car.

Where are those stations in East Falls? I will be living very close to the MCP hospital --- The septa sounds good and short but I don't knw how far of a walk it is from my future apartment to there. And also --- how far is the Temple stop from Temple proper?

The east falls station on the R6 is prob. most convenient if you're living near MCP hospital - it is in the neighborhood btwn. ridge ave. and henry ave. west of route 1. The queen lane station is quite a bit farther away. Mapquest will give you a pretty good feel for where the station is. Personally i think it would be extremely do-able, especially if you have a bike.

As far as the temple station goes, it is literally on the undergrad campus, and it is extremely safe even at night. There are always septa police and city police patrolling b/c it is an extremely busy station (every single commuter line goes through there). I'm not THAT familiar with where the medical campus is in regards to the station though.

I live in the suburbs and i ride septa ALL the time. It is a little pricey in comparison to NYC and Boston, but it still gets the job done!! Good luck on your decision - maybe I'll see you at Temple in 2 years !! 🙂

Thanks for your replies - yesterday's and todays were very helpful. I took Temple's offer. I am excited about it because while I was interviewing it was my favorite place. So - Templeites, throw my name into this hat! Wohoo!

congratulations, jm! I don't live in east falls, but I know that about 1/2 of my class does. the administration sends out info (in the packet I mentioned above) for carpooling. that might be your best bet - I think a lot of people carpool.

check out www.septa.org for train schedules. the R6 goes to main campus, but we are about 10-15 blocks up broad street. if you wanted to take that train, you would need to get on the subway (orange broad street line) or take the temple shuttle. the broad street line is a 1-2 block walk. the R8 would take you to the north philly train station which is closer to the health sciences campus, I think you'd have about a 4 or 5 block walk from there.

Well - I took the offer, and I am really excited about it. (also a bump for others that are going there inthe fall to show their stuff)

If anyone going to Temple lives in your apartment, you might be able to make some arrangement with them for lifts - that's how I survived my first year without a car. 🙂

Is it at all possible to find a new apartment? I'd definitely recommend Center City, if you can find a decent and affordable place.

Hey Walker!!!

Cant wait to see you at Temple. Sorry i havent responded, the once chance i had to reply to your "congrats hopie" post... my computer failed. which also left me without giving my best left finger to the temple not being good enough for a thread comment... but anyway, i'm glad to see that you've chosen temple, now i dont have to rush to convince you.

I hope everyone is having fun this summer, its our last free one! I thought of looking into living at Manyunk (i know i spelled that wrong).... is that in center city? i have lots to learn about philly...

Hey chickie! We will be going to school together! How cool is that?? Wohoo!!!

Too bad i already signed that other lease - or I would room with you! Come visit me sometime

No, Manayunk isn't in Center City - it's a suburban neighborhood, pretty decent I think but I've heard it described as too yuppie. There are a fair amount of bars, etc.

East Falls is nice though I'm not sure there's much besides residences. Germantown where I am is rather bleh, but it *is* very close to school and I'm under a five minute walk from the R8 commuter train. Also there's no way I'd find an apartment as good (in a well-maintained building too) for the price I'm paying now!

Just wanted to say congrats to everyone really quick before the boards crash again!!! (j/k 😉

'Sup freshmens!

Just wanted to chime in as another SDNer in the class of '06. I know that you guys are excited (I am dying for the second year to start, what the hell is wrong with me?) and I want to give you guys a bit of advice as you look ahead to the fall, DO NOT SKIP CLASS! I missed more classes than I attended and even though I passed everything, I made things more difficult for myself. This is the one painful lesson that I hope you guys can learn from. You will be tempted to skip Dr. Marino's embryo lectures, don't do it! Lara, phlly, any other suggestions?

well, see, I think that class attendance should be evaluated on a per-student basis. For me it was as such:

First Semester

Histo: Avoid at all costs
Anatomy: Go to everything.
Embryo: Go because he'll say stuff that will be on the test, but otherwise its a waste
BS: Gag me.

Second Semester

Biochem: Really good profs here, but it really is in all of the handouts. Attend the 1st lecture by every new prof and determine if it will work for you. Ashe is the man.
Physio: GO. Fav. Dept thus far (with biochem a close second and anatomy an even closer third). Anything that is the least bit confusing in the handouts is easily made clear by these guys.
Neuro: do it like biochem. evaluate each lecturer.

Some people like lectures. Some others, like me, often get nothing from them. I def. was in class alot less second semester, and fared better overall. I still feel as if I learned a rediculous amount as well.

If anyone has advice on books, please feel free to tell. I ended upn buying most of them in the end because Im a shmuck. But Id also recommend getting the BRSs etc and using them now so that come time for boards you are really familiar with them. My roommate is taking them now and he has mentioned that to me several times.

Good luck kiddies!

USS, lara, et. al., how's your summers working out for you? 🙂

Ultimately Frank is right, do whatever works for you. I guess my problem was that I thought that home-study would work best for me (as it had in the past) but med school was a whole new ballgame. I agree with the BRS advice, I have them for BS, Histo, Biochem, Physio, and Neuro!

Frank,

Summer for me is 9-5 back at the insurance company that has supported me for oh so long. I am having a gastric bypass in 8 days (you know I need one!) and although I'm sure that you will recognize me when we start class, I am hoping that I will look way different by the start of the second semester. If I remember correctly you are summering in Filth-a-delphia, whatcha doing for the next 2 months?

USS,

What kind of bypass are you having, if you dont mind my asking?
Good luck with it! There is a chapter on that procedure in the book Complications, really beneficial procedure for alot of people.

I am in philly, doing some research at CHOP involving immune function in women with HIV, smae lab I worked in before going to school. Long hours at times, but i need the cash hehehe.

I am having a roux-en-y. What book are you referring to? Hopefully it's not one that we are supposed to have. Man, I wish that I could find work that paid the bills and I could put on a CV! I am making a decent buck, but I don't think that being an analyst is going to beef up my resume!

Congratulations to all the incoming freshmen! I'm a soon-to-be third year, and I wrote a few page guide to first year - what to expect in each course, which books to buy. PM me if you are interested.

ussdefiant, phllystyl and lara -
best books for 2nd year:

path - buy the "big robbins" - Pathologic Basis of Disease. the note are good for path, but the text is great.

pathophys - do NOT buy Lange Pathophysiology of Disease. it is useless. NMS medicine is good, but too detailed for the course. You will use it for 3rd year, so it might be worth buying. the best book is Pathophysiology for Boards and Wards. Focus on the notes for tests.

pharm - katzung is overkill. get lippincott. at the end of the year I found a great book of charts called Smart Charts Pharmacology (Lange) by Pelletier. You will need to annotate the charts with lecture not material, but if you like a chart format, it is worth buying. pharm cards are good, but I thought they were confusing to study, and had more detail than was necessary for tests.

behavioral - kaplan if you already have it. I used it last year, but not at all second year.

micro - clinical micro made ridiculously simple; don't bother buying the "cases" books they recommend. don't buy Sherris micro. I think lippincott is worth buying. I bought the recommended immuno text, and really liked it (actually read most of it). I would say hold off on buying it to see if you can understand the material with notes and lecture. there were a few questions on the exam which could only be answered if you had read the text, however.

epidemiology - I found a good book at the penn book store called Medical statistics at a glance by Petrie and Sabin.

good luck, and enjoy what is left of your summer!

Hi everyone,

I'm finishing up a three week clinical preceptorship program at Mayo, and will go back to Philly for a few days (I want my Temple mailbox contents!) before going home for the rest of the summer. I plan to enjoy my last full six weeks ever of freedom and *hopefully* come back a licenced driver. 😳

Here's my take on the classes...

Anatomy - simple, you don't miss class! It's a course which obviously requires a lot of effort, and you'll save yourself a lot of stress if you don't let yourself get behind. If you want honors you must excell in both the multiple choice and practical sections, which is definitely a challenge and exceedingly time consumming...so you have to decide if it's worth the fight. Definitely try to make the most out of all your lab times and conferences (which are usually extremely good with clinical correlations), and come prepared because the professors will ask you questions!

Histo - unfortunately very likely to be a least favorite class, but I honestly think you have to show up to lectures, take good notes and pay attention in lab (try to look at the CD slides beforehand) if you want honors. If you just want to pass, skip all you want (which I admittedly did, though I regret not having put more effort).

Embryo - if you want honors, show up to class for the pop quizzes which count for extra credit and review, review review the material that Dr. Marino posts online as well as his handout notes. However this is a class that's very easy to blow off in comparison to anatomy and histo, at least if the same grading scheme is kept. Don't make it more difficult than it has to be - chances are you're never going to understand everything perfectly, so just try to get the general principles...and don't freak out if you've followed very little in lecture!

Behavioral science - you can put in as much or as little effort as you like, so long as you don't expect to pass without some real studying. Again, if you want honors it's best to go to class and take good notes (see a pattern emerging?) 😛

Ok, second semester:

Physio - you can pass without going to class, but it won't serve you well. This is really not a subject you want to have a weak understanding of, and the handout notes aren't always enough by themselves. Definitely put in effort (comparable to anatomy), do as many questions as possible and avail yourself of the professors for help.

Neuro - just passing requires at least a decent amount of work, and honors is (at least IMO) more trouble than it's worth, unless you have an aptitude for the subject. Try to go to class, but it's not that huge a deal to skip as long as you know the handouts and look at the class slides. Hopefully you'll find conferences more interesting than I did. Basically it's a good subject that could have been taught better.

Biochem - if you can pick it up easily, there's little need for class. If not, or if you're a good auditory learner, go. The protein lectures with Dr. Grubmeyer are worth attending (he gives exam hints), and Dr. Masker's notes aren't very fun to go through, so going to class can help. But if you can't retain anything, there's no point in going. And DO OLD EXAMS!

Hope this helps! And thanks kcrd for the info.

As of today anyone else going to be atending Temple in the fall? Interested in knowing who some of my future classmates are!

I know.. I have this in the main threads also, but...

I emailed all of the schools I applied to that listed their chem requirement as "Inorganic" vs. "General". All of the schools (10) stated that "General" was acceptable or that it was the same thing. I realize that they are two separate classes at some or all(?) undergrad schools, but Temple is the only school that told me "General" chemistry does NOT fulfill the requirement for "Inorganic" chem.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

To those of you that were accepted at Temple, did you take "General" chem or "Inorganic"?

Well, I was accepted to Temple last year, but I assume that my info is still good. I have never taken inorganic in my life, I only had general and organic, granted I took them both at Temple during my postbac. Gastric bypass tidbit: too little protein can cause hair loss and impede healing!

I'll be in Temple's class of 2007!
Thanks dguy101, Lara, Scrubbs, jmwalker, phllystyl, kcrd for responding to my pm's and helping me decide.

Whoo oooooo hooooooo!!! The general will be at Temple. We can PM and have a drink. or 2. or whatever. We'll invite hopie too.

And thanks currents Temple students and grads for the great advice on this thread!

Wahoo! Drinks, i cant wait. thanks for keeping me in the loop Walker!

I'm still trying to find a place to live... its hard with work and such... but ill be there on time i'm sure. Let me know!

congrats everyone!

Hope

Hey guys,
I will also be attending Temple in the Fall. Cheers to all and enjoy what's remaining of the summer!

congrats for you guys! let us know when yer all in town and we can go get some lagers one night 🙂

Beer. Yummmmmmmmm. I bet you know some good places too.

not to stray the thread from beer.. but anyone have any ideas when the white coat ceremony is? will it be on the weekend?

thanks!

I do know some good places 😉 Best place for beer in philly = Monk's .... hands down.

White coat ceremony was on a Friday Afternoon for us this year and was held in a hall on temple's main campus. I thought it was quite nice.

Hey, I was accepted three weeks ago or so, and I was told that I'd be receiving info on housing and roommate listings after making my deposit. Did anyone find that helpful? And when did you get it? I've been trying to look online for housing, but I have no idea what is good . . . and I'd really like to find a roommate. Or, do you know of any good places that Temple Med students end up living? Know of any good properties to look at?

It's not too late to find a good place, is it? Anyway, sorry to be annoying about this. I know of other people who decided on their apartments way earlier than this.

Hey Guys,
I have the same concerns as the person above. Im married so I'll be looking for a 1-2 bedroom apartment w/o any roommates. Can you guys give us a list of good areas that are more safe than N-Broad street. Another thing, do you think it's too late to find a good place for a decent price?
Cheers-MEDADMSUCKS

Looking more at housing, I think thus far, without a roomie, germantown is reasonable for studios... Lara, do you find any problems there?

Unfortunately, I havent a lot of time to search for places because i'm wrapping up my research at the NIH.

Does anyone know where we can get an updated calendar of this year? I'm not sure how accurate the one they sent us is.

Oh crap - I haven't gotten any mail from them. Only the personality profile thing and the carpool list. I am going to call them. Ick. I hope that one secretary is in a better mood than she was when I was just an interviewette.

I think I am going to move in a week and a half before.

I think this needs to be on the front page again. What sort of mail has anyone gotten from Temple? I think they forgot to send me an acceptance type stuff packet or something.

They haven't sent much of anything yet. I got a new roommate list today and some stuff about orientation. I think the bills are coming soon. Yay. And call Matt McDonald. He's the student liason for student affairs or something like that. He sends the stuff out now.

By the way, are there any more females looking for roommates?

Wow - had I know this earlier hopie you and I could have lived together! You and I think East Indian dudes are hot too, lol.

I called him today. I called the secretary today. I called fin aid today. I still haven't gotten the health stuff. I go the carpool stuff though, and the personality test stuff.

I can't believe that I was in your shoes a YEAR ago! I know you guys are excited! We go back in just over a month.

Is the North Philadelphia stop of the R8 close to campus?

And jmwalker -- from info from that east indian dudes thread, i'm guessing that we'll have our share of men to ogle. And when there aren't enough at Temple, well there's always Jeff, Drexel, and Penn. =)

I'm really starting to get excited . . .

Its about 5-6 blocks south of campus... and those can be scary blocks after dark.

Already talkin about oogling men eh? hehehe
