And jmwalker -- from info from that east indian dudes thread, i'm guessing that we'll have our share of men to ogle. And when there aren't enough at Temple, well there's always Jeff, Drexel, and Penn. =)

I'm really starting to get excited . . .

I think R8 stops close, but I am not sure if it is r8 or r6. When gen lob and I were trying to decide we posted up on a Temple/Drexel thread - I think if you do a search there is some relevant subway info.

And there will be PCOMers to ogle. lol

Already talkin about oogling men eh? hehehe

We have to be prepared to ogle in full force.

darn it. forgot to mention pcom. yeah, it looks like the r8 stops about a mile from campus whereas the broad street line stops maybe 2 or 3 blocks away. well anyway, a car will be helpful no matter what.

I'm going to be attending Temple as well. I'm looking for female roomates and a place to live. Does anyone know the number of the person (people) in charge of housing/roomate information? Can someone tell me everyting that you have received to date from Temple so I can make sure that I get it all? Thanks.

silly, come be my roommate! i've gotten health forms, an orientation packet, roommate lists, and carpool lists. the guy who sends out the packets is a rising second year named matt mcdonald. his number is 215-707-7878. sorry to broadcast that, but i doubt anyone besides temple people are reading this anyway.

pm me!

Where's the love for this Quaker?+pity+ I drive from Hatboro to Temple, and while the commute is tolerable, be prepared to pay handsomely for the privilege of parking in Tioga West! As for the oogling, right now I am not oogle-worthy, but by finals I expect, not only oogling, but to hear inappropriate comments about how good I look!

Looking more at housing, I think thus far, without a roomie, germantown is reasonable for studios... Lara, do you find any problems there?

I missed this post till now, but hopefully it's not too late...

No problems at all. It's a pretty boring and not particularly wealthy area (I find Chelten Ave. to be on the icky side), but like I said my building is well maintained and fairly secure. With some exceptions the apartment prices are reasonable and you get more of a "deal" than in other locations, especially Center City. If anyone's still looking, PM me for details.

About the probation - I'm not worried because I can attest that the facilities haven't interfered with my education, so there's no way Temple should lose accreditation. My guess is that it should be lifted once there's sufficient proof that construction on the new school will take place...hopefully sometime this fall, but we'll see.

To be honest I'm not expecting too much in the way of current improvements, but if there's only a limited amount of funds it wouldn't make sense to spend a lot on a building that will eventually be obsolete. I only have a year of lectures left so it's not a big deal anyway, and the class sizes should be kept down in the future so seating won't be an issue.

Any new addy's since the last bump? I wanna plan a pre-orientation go out for drinks night. Any takers? I mean - I don't really know the city that well - so if a philly native could collaborate I would be eternally grateful.

Ill help, as long as I can be oogled.

lol

Sounds like the mon before orientation we may be having a little sdn get together. I will keep you posted - since that is like a month out.

I haven't gotten any fin aid stuff but hpie has - you can pm her - fullofhope. I got a laptop as a grad gift when i thought i was going to go to drexel. I wasn't planning on bringing it for the most part to clas s- but we'll see. It is nice enough to bring to the library though and work out of at home.

Bringing your laptop to school is mainly useful for histo labs - if you feel like reviewing CD slides for anatomy, histo or neuro, the library computers should be fine.

In addition to what Lara said I ended up dowmloading all of Dr. Marino's online Embryo lectures to my laptop and viewing them at various points during the day, although I didn't HONOR in it like someone I know who posts here!

awesome. i'm gonna leave my ol desktop here at home and get me a beautiful new laptop.

What books did you guys find helpful in Anatomy, Histo, embryo and Beh. Science?

Anatomy: Netter
Histo: Junquiera
Behavioral: Kaplan and BRS
Embryo: Netter for embryo (or nothing)

the same netter for embryo as for anatomy?

Sorry for the confusion, it is a Netter Embryo atlas. It is a separate atlas and much, much smaller.

Thanks
Did you buy the rohen photographic atlas? And do you know if high yield embryo is useful?

Netter is the only thing I bought for Anatomy. If fact, that is all that anyone in my dissection group used in class. I did subscribe to a site for a 6 month trial that had lots of photos of actual dissections that was similar to Rohen. Again, this is where the laptop came in handy as I could just go into a module (you'll see when you start school) and go online to study anatomy, or look at histo slides, or view Dr. Marino's online lectures. As far as embryo goes, if it is the same as last year, then all you need is the atlas (and maybe not even that). Dr. Marino makes a point to have a very user friendly, conversational, friendly learning environnment. Basically if it's not in his notes, then it's not on the exam.

Only get the Rohen if you feel you need the extra help in anatomy lab. If you're a decent visual learner who only needs to be shown the structures once or twice at most, it's probably not worth it. For sure don't bother with any extra sources besides the Netter atlas and Rohen at most. Dr. Schneck's class notes are excellent and I understand he's received publishing offers for them. They're more than enough for you to spend your time on!

Embryo is tricky because there really aren't any "great" sources. Same goes for histo (the Junqueira book sucks, but some EM images may come up in the lab exam). Behavior can be frustrating because questions come from all over the place - handout notes, class and the very large Kaplan book. You should pick up a review book (either HY or BRS) for embryo and behavioral at some point, but there's little use for the actual classes. Thankfully this will change come biochem. 🙂

Bottom line, for first semester focus on the material the profs give and don't expect honors without going to class (this is speaking from experience). Take good notes for histo (especially lectures NOT from Dr. Paavola) and behavioral, and just do your best to follow in anatomy conferences and embryo.

Thanks for the detailed replies! I was doing some book perusing on amazon and the input was very helpful!

Bump and Congrats to all the new 1st years!!! I generally stay out of pre-allo... but wanted to wish you all the best! If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to PM me!

-Scrubbs-
A Recent Grad Wishing She Was Still A Med Student 😉

Thanks scrubbs. I had Temple fax me the health information since it was never sent to me. Yay for innoculations! Since I can't find my health reconds - more yay! The more jabs the better.

Hey jm... can't you just get blood titers drawn? That way you only get one stick instead of a gazillion...

looks like i can do that for rubella - the rest read that evidence of the vaccination are necessary. I need Hep B anyway, so that one I won't mind - but tentanus diptheria, mmr and polio again, ick.

Tetanus you need to have current, Hep B is a 3 shot series (I got it at school), rubella/rubeola/varicella/mumps are all titers...

On a different note... I got an invite from the alumni board to go to that pool party... too funny! You guys should go... Summit has a beautiful pool with a bar outside and lots of hotties live there 😉 .

Whatcha doing your residency in scrubbs?

Emergency Medicine Intern - Bring on the Chisellers!

Hopefully you guys will have nice weather for your orientation outings - it was cloudy and rainy for my class, and I didn't end up attending the pool party. But Summit Park is a pretty nice place and you'll probably get some barbecues there throughout the year.

Lara, who'd like to prove that it's actually possible to have a greater social life in M2 than M1 😎

Good luck... I failed miserably with that one 🙁 Then again, I went out A LOT M1, so it would have been really hard to top my partying M2. 😀

A Chiseller is a patient who "chisels" away at your patience and sympathy... someone who is in the ED more for secondary gain (ie - drug seeking) than for pain...

eg - Damn doc... I have this HORRIBLE pain in my side... It feels like my kidney stones... The only medication that works for me is 6mg of Dilaudid with 50mg of Benadryl (this is a LOT of narcotics mixed with Benadryl which gives them a buzz)... oh, and I can't take Motrin or Toradol or Percocet or Codeine or Morphine (lesser pain meds)... gee, I don't know why you can't find anything on my exam or CT scan that proves I have a stone... but it REEEAAALLLY hurts! Can I have another dose of meds? I know its only been about an hour... but I'm still in pain...

Yes boys and girls, I am jaded and cynical... People do have pain, and I generally believe them, but I see at least one person like this everyday... and they're generally looking for a quick high.

I totally here you. I had to deal with one of them today. He had a toothache and he was allergic to Ibuprofen and he left when he found out that the doctor isn't going to perscribe him anyhting more than VIOX. By the way, he left without paying!
