so i'll definitely join you guys in the abysmal financial hole we're gonna be in. but i loved tufts, and it definitely will be a great education. some things that perplex me though: where am i gonna live? does tufts have its own rec center? do i need a car?

the fact that housing may have us all spread out makes me a little worried that it'll be that much harder to hang out with fellow tufts buddies. what do you guys think?

hi guys i just got it! and also joining the " in debt for life " club🙂) but i think tufts will be worth it! anywyas im from cali, went to berkeley undergrad and i have the same question. housing ???? , i dont think im going to have a car for my first year ?

yo calipaww

i went to berkeley as well (grad 2001). pathetically, i feel like next year we'll be able to identify each other as SDN slaves just based on that information alone. but congrats on the acceptance! i'll see you next year i'm sure

i'll see you all there, too! tufts is my first choice, and now i'll be a "double-jumbo," since i attended tufts as an undergraduate, as well.

there are some rather spartan dorm's across the street in "posner hall," and i've decided to continue dorm life instead of taking an apartment the first year. space is VERY limited, so look into it right away if you're interested. i'm kinda lazy, and like the idea of rolling out of bed, and going across the street to any classes that i decide to attend, rather than taking the T. i'm not going to have a car - it would cost $130/month just to park it, and driving around boston is insane. also, i thought if might be easier to get involved in study groups at posner.

here's a link to find local apartments in boston. remember, tufts medical is located in chinatown near the theatre district, so check out those areas:

hey guys...good to finally know some people have posted that they are goin to tufts...im pretty anxious myself....excited that im goin to med school but also nervous of the expectations i have to meet...anyways...im thinking of stayin at posner hall...sent my application to them a couple of days ago...i heard posner sucks...but for the sake of convenience i think its my best bet...i dont know anyone since im from southern cali so im a little skeptical of getting a roomate now....what do u guys think?😀

1. Posner Hall Dormitory (copied and pasted below)

Posner Hall, located at 200 Harrison Avenue, houses students enrolled in the School of Dental Medicine, School of Medicine, and the Sackler School of Biomedical Sciences. The dormitory, in addition to providing a convenient place to live, should foster an environment that promotes academic growth and personal development. Accordingly, students are expected to behave with mutual respect, courtesy, and cooperation. Although the university does not dictate lifestyle or morality, and encourages reasonable informality and spontaneity, the residence hall must be preserved as a place for quiet residence.

The dormitory encompasses four floors and only single rooms are available. Kitchens and single sex bathrooms are located on each floor. There is a lounge and courtyard on the first floor. Laundry, a weight lifting area, and study space is located in the basement. Individual rooms are approximately 11?x12? and have two closets. Rooms are furnished with a twin bed, dresser, desk and chair.

There are four Resident Assistants in Posner Hall, one on each floor. These individuals are employees of the Student Affairs Offices of the Dental or Medical schools. Resident Assistants are present to help students become acclimated to professional school as well as oversee and implement dormitory policies.

2. Access to a gym (very important to some of us!):

An agreement with city officials is being made so that TUSM students can join the local YMCA. More information will be available in the Office of Student Affairs this fall.

what up fellow tufts 07 ers..
okay i got my financial aid package today .. ahhhh this much money seems pretty unreal!!!! so im trying to estimate a realistic budget , any insight on transportation via the T and foos expenses etc?

thanks

Hey,

I am going to be a second year here at Tufts. I can give some information that might help. First, about Posner. I actually live in Cambridge, but I visit there and I also use the gym down there. It is decent and it is nice you get your own room. Also being next to the school is quite nice. It's not too bad.
Alot of my classmates do use the Wang YMCA and prefer that to using the Posner gym. The fees are not bad at all as someone already posted the price.
As for transportation, I use a car to get into school. If you own a car, it might be nice to have one. If you actually live in Boston, having a car might not be a good idea, especially if you live in Posner. I know someone who has a car and pays 100+ per month for parking! I only pay 8 a year for street parking. I personally don't think I could get by without a car. The T is okay, not as good as NY IMO. The monthly pass cost for a student is 27 I believe, which is pretty good.
I think that was all the quesitons people had, if you have any questions, feel free to email me. It is better if you email me rather then PM me, as I check my email much more often then here. Good-Luck.

what up fellow tuftsers🙂) anyone out there in the MD/MPH program i wanted to know what you thought about it and if it is worth it? and the pros and cons about it thanks

just bumping....has anyone gotten an apartment yet?....anyone thinking about buying??

Hey Armando: I was thinking about buying. . .am looking all around. . .www.realtor.com. . .www.newenglandmoves.com. . .www.isoldmyhouse.com. . .etc. are you thinking about buying? any sites you're using?

Anyone else think $16,000 ($58,000 - $42,000 for tuition, fees, etc) is a bit low to live on in Boston? It seems the ghetto apartments are charging $1,000+ per month; something livable is quite a bit more.

The fin aid staff didn't have a lot to offer in response to my questions; they seem like they're completely saturated with issues right now.

Thoughts? ttfn,

Hey all,
are there any other HPSP program participants out there? If so, shoot me an email, pm or post. ttyl,

Good luck living in Boston on that budget. I interviewed at Tufts and I remember the financial aid people telling me that they expected 4 people to live to an apartment to share the bills, with the amount of budget they alloted to housing. (don't forget food, entertainment, clothes, supplies, books, etc.)

LSU in New Orleans (I am an M2) had the same problem until this year. They made the cost of living budget based on the average student who lived in the dorms. This meant bad luck for the rest of us. Now they have seen fit to increase the budget $200 a month for living expenses. It's still not great, but it opens your options. Hopefully Tufts will do this also.

I'll be a second year at Tufts in August. You cannot live anywhere near Tufts for $16,000 a year... if you pay a grand a month in rent already, then you are down to $4000 for everything else in Boston for a year. Not happening. A more realistic budget is honestly over $20K, more if you have a car and you have to park it somewhere downtown... it is 130 a month if you get a spot, which they don't have right now, but more like 250+ if you don't get into the Tufts garage and have to park in another downtown garage. You don't need a car your first year at all, though, so if you can avoid it I would. Also, it is expensive but necessary to go out as much as possible, and at 5 bucks a beer most places in Boston, it adds up. I would advise you incoming first years to find a roommate or two and get together to find a place... you can get in touch with the student housing dude and there should be some sort of spreadsheet with people's names who are looking for places... it is a crapshoot but most people (including me) who found their roommates that way were happy about it in the end, and you save an assload of money in rent.

Happy apartment hunting, and I'll see you incoming first years at the bars during your orientation week. Enjoy.

just got the good news today...im officially going to be a double jumbo!....well a very poor one and in four more years hehe.

as far as housing...i have quite a few soon-to-be-2nd year friends and none of them live in posner. however, i think posner is a good temporary living situation until you get acclamated to Boston. but if you're looking for areas to rent/buy a place...i think that south end is the most convenient...but if you're willing to commute a bit on the T or a bike there's always the affordable allston/brighton area or cambridge/somerville area. any specific questions you guys can pm me and i can try to help out...jumbo pride baby!!!

bump - hey guys ! only a couple of more weeks left!!!! im getting pumped!

Ya, me too. In fact, I'm so excited. . .I'm going to go play golf! Beautiful day today!

blueskies...did u find a place to buy yet? me and the realtors go about once a week mostly in the south end but some in bay village and back bay....ive found some cool stuff...but havent found anythin that fits my parents 100 needs.....its really tough to find a good price, nice building, and good location all in one....i think the south end has the best deals though...especially since a lot of it is new construction

Hi Armando,
yes, we actually did find a place and I'm quite excited about it.

I hope this link works:
It's MLS ID 30730198 and we're scheduled to close on it on August 15th.

It's up in Chelmsford, which might be a bit far a way for most folks. But I'm content taking the commuter rail in to Boston--the Lowell station is only a few minutes away and the train ride is ~45 minutes. We were most interested in finding a property we like. This one meets our criteria. It's in a townhouse complex with lots of old trees and the Merrimac River is (literally) right out the back door.

If you're interested, it's the Williamsburg complex in Chelmsford. All the townhouses are on Wellman Ave. All the 200 series units are waterfront, as are the 185-199's, and a few 8/900's too.

Good luck and let me know if I can help--we like our broker a lot.

Cheers,

-bs
