Anyone considering the PSP program (pre-matric summer program)? I wasn't even thinking that way... we will get plenty of class for the next 2 years. However, the program is FREE. In fact, all of the students receive a stipend. So basically, you get paid to get ahead on gross anatomy and biochem. Hmmmm. Also, its only six weeks and we will have a month after to relax (i.e. get boozed up) before orientation.

I'm going to do it. Just wondering if any of you are considering.

anymore UMDers?

anyone going to that housing crap on the 11th?

I will prob. go to see what is available. I have been looking for houses in Ridgely's Delight but have been unsuccessful in locating anything good. It looks like I may have to do one of the apartments near campus.

And where are the rest of the UMders?

wazupshah/Davidson College- BS Bio/wazupshah/All over (including Gaithersburg)

I'm not for sure, but it's a great school and I accepted the offer.

Hey Rock, did you go to Watkins Mill?? ......or Gaithersburg??😛

0 for 2 on that one shah...went to Quince Orchard...where did you go? (if you stayed in gburg long enuf)

u guju btw? if you have no idea what i mean by that, then u arent 🙂

Hey all - i also accepted the MD offer but aren't sure yet if I'm going or not. It is a great place - almost too close to home!

fishface/Yale - BA History/fishface/bethesda

wazapshah - where else are you thinking about? i'm having a tough time making my decision. any insight into your thought process would be wonderful....

may go the housing thing....depends on the weather!

sup fish,
where else u looking at?

i got another offer and a buncha waitlists at other schools but im not sure its worth the extra 25k or so a year to attend them over umd

talked to my bro's friends who are doctors and they all say if they had to do it over again, theyd take in-state tuition and goto their state school (one went to hopkins undergrad and med and now has to pay ~$900 a month for the next 20 years to pay off his debt...but mind you he is raking in a lot of cash)

best of luck,
rock

Heh. I haven't decided which school / program I'd be attending yet even though I got into my first choice.

TMS ...or rather troy..it's interesting that you have the initials of someone in my fraternity ----> ax3...

haha, too bad I am an inactive member, I feel so bad.

Rock - I went to Watkins Mills my freshman year, then moved outta MD. And I've no idea what the "Guju" thing is, sorry man.

Fish - I'm lookin' at 3 other schools.
1) Baylor -b/c I loved that school when I went to visit. Absolutely amazing place!
2) Cornell - b/c it's Cornell, and NYC is...like...way cool, (great argument there)
3) ECU - it's one of my state schools and they've offered me a FULL RIDE+. It's hard to turn down a virtually Debt free Medical Degree.

I got waitlisted at Cornell, and I'm still waiting to hear back from Baylor, so my decsion will depend on what happens there. But the way I see it, Maryland great b/c its the entire package. It's got fun, down-to earth students that are amazingly diverse. I love the DC/MC/NOVA area too and I've got family here which makes it a huge plus. And UMD's got the whole classes-end-at-noon everyday thing going on(A huge plus in my book).
The drawbacks for me are 1) Out of state tuition, 2) Baltimore is bleh.

Where else are you lookin'? And what are you thinking.

Allright...6 down....about 144 to go!

This is such a tough call!
Back in september my 1st choices were md, nyu and columbia. i got into nyu and waitlisted in columbia. i'm still waiting on northwestern and pitt. So now I'm very torn. tuition vs. location/reputation is sort of what i'm dealing with. And maryland has grades! everybody at the pass/fail schools raves about how non-competitive they are. I think i'm going to have to go back for second looks and hopefully get hit over the head by something!

does maryland have a second look, or just a housing fair? sort of sounds like a nightmare if you ask me....but i might just have to stop by.

and no way in hell am i taking extra classes this summer! i am going to spend as much time doing absolutely nothing as possible (assuming my boss lets me leave at the end of june 🙂 )

that's what i'm thinking. and my mind changes daily! this is so hard!

Fish - I feel you on that Grade System thing. That blows.

Yeah I hear ya about the grades, but, lots of schools do that high pass, pass, fail crap or whatever and it is basically a graded system. Anywho, it can either help or hurt ya, cuz you'll have grades for years 1 and 2 and 3 as opposed to just in year 3 for many schools (so do well in all 3 and ull be fine for residency...screw up year 3, and maybe u did well in 1 and 2 and then it wont matter too much...or thats my logic at least...probably very flawed).

im waitlisted at a slew of schools and hopefully iwont get off any so i dont have to make a tough choice between umd (with its great in-state tuition) and a school with a better rep and location

ahh such is life

rock

I am almost positive that UMD doesn't have a second look weekend. I think it would be nice to have one after we have absorbed the application/interview/acceptance process. UMD was my first acceptance. After which, I withdrew from all the other schools. You simply can't beat the tutition vs. quatlity of education. And Maryland gains prestige every year.

I don't think it matters if there is a letter grading system versus pass-fail. My friends at Maryland study together quite a bit. I think it doesn't matter where you go, there will always be gunners. Also, if you have the option of pass/fail, are you not going to work as hard? We all have to prepare for boards.

This is my opinion...I could be wrong.

If anybody goes to that housing thing, lemme know...I'm seriously in need of an apartment, but don't know the area, and I'm probably gonna end up living on campus at Pascault Row. This being the first time I'm living on campus, I don't know what the hell Im doing. 😀

Hey- when's the housing thing? I didn't get an invite.

Invite says:

Housing Fair
Friday April 11, 10am-3pm
Baltimore Student Union
621 Lombard St.
more info 410-706-7766

btw, when are we supposed to find out about housing? I put in an application for Pascault Row on-campus housing, and am apprehensive that I should actually be looking for an apartment as well.

Notification for Baltimore Student Union and Pascault Road comes in April. Pascault Road apartments are a rip off compared to the other apartments in the area that are bigger and cheaper...the only good thing about Pascault is that it'll be easier to meet other students, closer to school, and it comes furnished. Pasc Apartments are like 3 minutes away from med skewl walking-distance.

Anyone need a roomate? I'm about 80% certain that I'll be at Maryland next year, and I'm looking for someone to rent an apartment with.

Trolls and Gunners need not Apply.

I just wanted to mention that for all you fitness buffs who are going to attend Maryland, that the workout center in Pratt Garage sucks....

However! Students attending Maryland professional school has acesss to the UMBC undergrad facility for free but you need to bring your ID 🙂 It has fitness classes and indoor tennis ....and the undergrad campus is a 10 minute shuttle bus ride from the professional campus....

okay, I need to stop blabbinggggg😀

I've heard that a large percentage of the current MS-1 class use the Pratt St. gym. I don't know what the consensus about the gym is...but I think I will just transfer my Gold's membership downtown. There is a location at the Power Plant (~10 blocks from campus). The drive to UMBC is pretty long.

Has anyone received their Financial Aid award letter? What a crock!!!

What do you mean? I haven't gotten anything from fin aid yet.

...just a heads up to let you know that the Pascault Row apartments aren't in the greatest of neighborhoods (meaning be extra careful and no walking alone after dark)...but, there is a free shuttle bus available.

yeah i got my financial aid award....for some reason the budget for an in-state student is 39K...i got 3K in grants and the rest is all loans

hey rock...

if i may ask...what was your efc...mine is $1,300.00 and i didn't get **** in grants...also...did you apply for the maryland prof. school scholarship...i did but it didn't show up on my award letter. 3K in grants, pretty sweet. do you know if we can only take out federal loans only up to the estimated cost of education. for instance, with your grants...do you have to reduce the loan amount to meet the estimated cost...

kaos...i just received the letter on Fri. I was told last week that i should receive it this week. Did you file your FAFSA before the priority deadline (March 1..i think)? Also, i live in B-more so mail may have made it here first.

I got my financial aid packet in the mail on Friday too, only to find lots of loans and absolutely no grant money. So much for the promised 3k grant if you submit your FAFSA in by the priority deadline! I'm going to contact them to see why I didn't get any love. Oh, and I hadn't heard about the MD professional school scholarship -- is that need-based or merit-based?

Ok, I'm officially freaked out about fin aid. I submitted FAFSA Jan 1st. Mine may come today! I need money! :scared:

Hey Kaos...don't freak out just yet...i called this morning and she immediately told me that most of the letters hadn't been mailed out (since i started out with the general I have a question about financial aid)...

the maryland prof. school scholarship is basically a 1,000.00 grant...you have to fill out a 1 page application at the fin. aid office. i not sure if its need-based or not...it seemed to me that it was 1st come 1st serve...

Downshift...I hear ya on the "promised" money...what about the..."We divide it all up and make awards, and if I (Jeff Edgerton) have some left over...ya get another scoop"...what bulls!t...ya know what's really gonna suck...when friends start getting their packages from private schools and the differences in financing is not as staggering as we thought it was....it's a good thing that UMD was my top choice for more reasons than money (although the money certainly helped)...well, maybe we'll see more when people withdraw later in the year...(fingers crossed)

PSP starts in two months...

Quick question...when did you guys get acceptance from UMD post-interview? Foxwell promised 3 wks afterwards, is that true? I'm an outta-stater.
Yea, the Pratt gym is pretty ghetto, but at least they fixed the AC (someone fainted from the heatstroke and hurt themself real bad).

I'm an outta stater too and it took 'em about 3-4 weeks to get back to me. One of my best turn-around times.

yo wangsta...interviewed 12/11...heard 1/14 (keep in mind that was over the holidays)

just got in touch with Jeff from fin. aid...

grants for 1st year are LIMITED...usually 50% of students get them at first (~2-3K)...HOWever, he still gives out scholarship money later in the year (around Sept. Oct.) this translates into gettin 2-3K in scholarships...he said that these students will receive mystery checks during the first couple weeks of school...also...the radar for need based aid is somewhere around 15K EFC...under that and you are allright. He said this CURRENT year (class of 2006)...ALL students under the radar got at least 2-3K....

Also...things get better 2nd-4th...

Md Prof. School scholarship hasn't been awarded from the state as of yet...the state makes one big award and then it is awarded first come first serve (FIll out your app now if you haven't)

[Deep Breath]

Also...you can take out total aid up to Projected Cost of Education (if you were awarded it)...you can onlyl take need-based aid up to the Total Need...after that it must be something else like Fed. Unsub. loans...this doesn't really matter to us as med students because we will have a rather large Unsub. loan

You can have your Projected cost adjusted IF:

your rent is over 750.00
utilities over 180.00
surprise medical or auto repair bills

Peace out.

TMS..

my EFC was $0. I sent my FAFSA in on Jan 30 because Jeff said the earlier u get it in, the more $ you get (i guess I was lucky). I didnt apply for the Professional Scholarship because I didnt know about it. As for reducing loans, I am new to this process so I am not sure how it works. Either way, a 39K budget seems a tad bit on the high side. I didn't foresee the whole year being more than 30K (assume 14k for tuition, 2k for laptop, 8K for living, 4K for books, microscope ect, 2K for food/transportation (in-state = get a lot of food from home 😉 ))

The new US NEWS rankings come out in 2 days. Any bets as to how much UMD moves up this year? I'm putting $10 down on
6 spots. (ie: #39---->#33).

Whatch U got??😎

whazup...

i'd love for it to go up 5...but i'll bet a round of drinks at orientation that it goes up 3 (research) and 2 (patient care).

i can't wait for orientation. my bud is an ms1 there and he said that it is the most fun you'll have first year...basically Bull**** and happy hours for a week...lots of opps. to get drunk at the local bars (ie Pickles, Wharf Rat, Max's, etc. etc.)

i'll also bet that i'm the first person who tries to take off their pants at some bar during orientation😉

hey...
so has anyone that applied for on-campus housing heard anything yet? i think we are supposed to hear in april....

erininseattle/Willamette University BS Bio/see alias/Seattle
I'm not from Maryland-so I'm in the dark as what I'm getting into moving to Baltimore- I've only been there once, for the interview. I'm holding acceptances other places but I like Maryland. However, will go to U.Washington if accepted off of the alternate list. Any suggestions as to where to live if I go to Maryland- I understand there are areas of Baltimore that are not that desirable.

Still haven't heard anything from fin aid! 😡 +pissed+

kaos...i would give them a call. talk to jeff edgerton

so last call for who's going to the housing fair tomorrow. sdn should represent strong.

i may go...but my pi is pushing me to finish a paper...

Tuvi...college park representing strong...

in the words of Ali G....Respec'....

F(&#$!! They said that somehow there was a computer screwup, and they didn't get my FAFSA! It's straightened out now, and I should hear from them next week! +pissed+

So did you guys learn anything interesting about housing in Baltimore that you'd care to share with those of us that couldn't make it out to the Fair?
