**Official** U of MD Class of 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys,

I will most likely be attending Maryland in August as well. I got pretty much the 3k in grants from finan. aid. I don't have it on paper, but I called Jeff and he gave me the run down. I am from Suitland MD, and probably will be moving to Laurel, which is in the middle of both baltimore and dc. I might attend the psp program if i get picked. I am sure about md, but I am also considering Case Western with the pass/fail and all. But the relocating is really putting me off and so is Cleveland.
Also is anyone interested in a second look since the Univ. does not have a formal one. Lil

i am definitely interested in heading up there to check it out again and also meeting some people so I can figure out what I am going to do about living/finding a roomie.

anyone know about scholarships? I think tms mentioned that they give some out later? (is this not including the professional one which I sent in hella late?)

also, how does one sign up for the psp program? and is it too late?

thanks,
rock

For the psp program you can call Donna Reynlolds - Office of Academic Development at (410)706-7662 and she should be able to hook you up with the info. you need.

hell yeah to my UMD SOM peeps...

Donna Reynolds is the person to talk to. i called her is january right after my acceptance and she assured me that i would have a spot, since i called so early. my soon to be roomate (currently and MS1) will be one of the students helping to teach the class. he assures he that it will be just like med school. we will dissect prolly 50% of what we will in the fall and cover some biochem.

the program is free. we get ~300/week stipend.

hopefully, i'll see some of you this summer.

Tuvi...ridgely's delight is just south of campus. very nice. the first two blocks or so west of MLK are ok but going further gets a little sketchy. federal hill is about 15 blocks south of campus and is really nice...but a little expensive.

fern...laurel is still about 25 min commute...do you want to put up with that every day. i lived there for three years during college, and it was only 20 minutes to UMCP...driving sucked. if you do move there, you can jump on the BW from laurel and it isn't that bad since it basically dumps you off three blocks from campus. good luck in your decision.

to whoever wants to set up a second look, i'm sure you could contact hermione hicks in the admissions office. i went on a tour with her and a small group from college park last summer. i'm def. down with meeting up with some people. i can drag along my friend and maybe he can solicit some other current ms1's.

When does PSP start/end?

psp starts june 2 and ends july 11.

has everyone found a place to live yet?

hey guys...
has anyone who applied for on-campus housing heard anything yet? and which areas do most med students live in? ( i figure i better start thinking about alternate plans, unless i want to end up at home 🙂)

Fish, XRock - Where are you guys in terms of the "Maryland Vs, Waitlisted Schools" internal debate?

Anyone know why there's about 27K/year set out in our yearly budget for cost of living. What's the break-up of that 27k?

Hello future UM Med Students!

I am a 3rd yr med student at maryland and thought I would give some answers to your questions.

1) I love it at Maryland and I know you'll be happy coming here. Everyone gets along great, we always go out together and have fun. The grades can be a pain, but I think they do help when you apply to residency because you can differentiate yourself from everyone else. Most people gets B's anyway with some A's.

2) The gym may seem crappy, but I've worked out there 4-5 x/week fort he last three years and so do most med students here. It has every peice of equipement you need to get a good workout, play b-ball, racquetball, run, whatever. And it's free. In my third year clerkships I go there when I have a long lunch or I'm waitng for an operation to start.

3) Fin. aid is a pain in the $SS and always will be, i still get the 3K per year. I think they offer you so much money just so that you can take it if you need, most people do not need $27000 for living expenses.

4) I taught PSP a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. The atmosphere is relaxed and everybody gets to know one another and have a good time. The students who took the class when I taught it went on to be some of the best in their class including the class president. You have two of hours of lecture followed by 2 hours of lab. Then you free to study or work in the lab in the afternoon (or have fun).

5) I live about 20 minutes away, but from what other people tell me on-campus housing sucks and your better off looking at one the many appartments/townshouses within a couple blocks of campus.

From what 4th years have told me, the med school you go to doesn't have a very big impact on your residency match. Maryland students consistantly match at great places in competitive fields. I'm glad I took the in-state tuition. I know going here will help me go into Emergency Medicine.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Good luck!

hey, i'm down with meeting some people to head up to umab one day. i'm still trying to decide on md vs. waitlist schools, so a second look would be nice. i also want to check out some places to live. anyway, i go to umcp right now, so hit me up if you want to go to umab. [email protected]

let's organize a date for a second look visit. PM me with dates you will be available and i will contact hermione hicks or kathie alascio and set it up. big ups UM SOM.

Damn. Finally got my money letter, it's all loans. Oh well...🙁

Also got my residence letter today, got my efficiency @ Pascault Row!

Hi guys anyone interested in attending a SNMA event on May 8th from 6:30pm-9:30pm. If you are interested and have any questions you can contact Barbara Robinson at [email protected]

Hi guys anyone interested in attending a SNMA event on May 8th from 6:30pm-9:30pm. If you are interested and have any questions you can contact Barbara Robinson at [email protected] . It will be an opportunity to meet and talk to students and it is before MAY 15th who are still undecided.

fern.312....i'm assuming that SNMA is student national medical association. do you know the topic of this meeting or any other information? sounds good to me.

i have contacted kathie regarding a second look visit. we are trying to work on something. there may be a few potholes...but i'm trying to work around them. i am, also, hoping to get it going before may 15. the problem is that the current students have exams coming up and the end of the year is obviously near, which may make it difficult to sit in on a lecture or observe "normal" student life. we'll see what we can put together.

holla'

Does anyone know that actual tuition costs for Maryland? I can't seem to find any info on the website and the handbook is from 1999. I haven't gotten my "official" financial aid info so I'm wondering if they overbudget for living expenses. The FA office said that the total budget (for out-of-state) is 55K (ouch). Does anyone know how much of this is tuition? Any other out-of-staters considering Maryland?

I don't have it in front of me right now, but I think its about $28k. I've heard that the rest is just overbudgeted. At least that what's I'm hoping. I'm not about to spend $27k on living expenses.

Looks like I'll be doing PSP too! Can't wait to get paid to study, make new friends, and get settled in!~!

I got the good news from Donna today. For those of you that still haven't heard back, her office is sending out letters tomorrow.

If you get the letter for PSP do you have to go? Reason being that I want to matriculate as late as possible. Maryland is a good school but I'm still hoping to get off the alternate list for my state school. Are there any otther out-of-staters that are planning on Maryland?

I know that there is a small alternate list for the pSp program. So if you get off the waitlist at your state school before June 2nd, you can always withdraw from the program. Personally, I wouldn't give 'em less than a week's notice though, so I'd say around the 25th of May.

erininseattle,

you don not have to attend psp if you do not want to. it's just a great opportunity. there are plenty of others who would like to take advantage of it. you can decline psp and still matriculate normally in august. good luck with UDubb. if it doesn't work out...then the rest of us look forward to meeting you in august.

Did you guys notice that we're representing well on the M-zero club list! We got the biggest roster so far:

w00t!

So basically, the second look i was trying to put together would have been no more than a repeat tour of the campus...didn't seem worth the effort. the first year students have a big final this week and then...they're out. sorry folks...

can't wait to see everyone in two weeks at psp (first round at pickles is on me). now, i'll go back to enjoying my two weeks of freedom (Just left my job at the NIH friday.) before the onslaught starts.

peace out...

any of you find a place to live already? i went looking around, saw the redwood towers (very nice but it all adds up to a pretty penny...parking, amenity fees and whatnot)

anyone looking for a roommate to find an apartment near the hospital?

lemme know

hey Rock...long time no hear...

try the atrium...an efficiency is ~750 if you mention you are a student..utilities are included...as well as free DSL...not bad...
a few psp'ers are living there and it was just remodeled so it is very nice...however, it is right across from lexington market, which can get a bit skecthy...but, what isn't sketchy around here...it not so bad...a few pan handlers but you see the campus pO-lice around all da time...good luck finding a place

anyone who really wanted to see the campus...you can PM me for a private tour...wooo-ooo. i'll be in psp all day but i can take some time if you are really interested in lookin around again. lemme tell ya...there's nothing like dissection and scooping fat out with a spoon. i think -0- and fern will agree.

peace out...got a "quiz" tomorrow...aka a normal undergrad exam's worth of material in 15-20 questions.

"3,4,5 keeps the diaphragm alive"

So how's PSP comin'?

hehe i sure hope there are some hotties

shah u going to baylor now? congrats man...i know one cutie from my undergrad who is going there

thanks for the info tms

Yeah. it's lookin' that way. I still haven't withdrawn from Maryland officially, but unless the Dean at Baylor was just F*ckin' with me on the phone, then I'm set to move out to Texas next month.

It's a bittersweet victory, though. Baylor was my top choice, but there's so much about Maryland that I like. It would'a been cool to meet y'all too.

U MD MSIII/MSIV here. You guys can PM/post any questions you have about the school here and I will try to answer them. I may be a little slow getting back to your PM's though, as I don't check my box that often. I know that they don't tell you guys very much about what to expect in the beginning, but that is something that you will have to get used to. Even during 3rd yr, they often don't even tell us where we will be doing rotations until the 1st day of the rotation. I had a post about housing a while back too that you can search for. I'm not the expert on housing though, as I will be living 3 out of the four years at home with my parents. Congrats on getting in, and don't worry, first yr is just like college. 🙂

where you psper's living now?

i checked out the atrium...very nice, and you are right, a little sketchy and more of a walk than i would like

bump (so I don't have to keep searching for this) 😀

Has anybody gotten anything but fin aid papers yet? Am I supposed to be expecting anything, seeing as I'm going to travel first week of August...don't want to miss anything big.

nah got nothing from them besides financial aid and some housing info back in the day

Oh yeah, I called them up and they said we should be getting a big packet of info soon!

YAY! Just got my envelope chock full of info about orientation! *excited dance*

got it today as well...better be some good laptops we are getting!

It sucks that we're getting the laptops on the 19th...What am I supposed to do for internet access until then? 🙁

could you guys post stats for us applicants out there? thanks....
