*OFFICIAL* U of Washington 2004 'competitive' list

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got such a scare today!! With all of the talk about "big brown envelopes" I panicked when I check the mail today. Laying next on top of the pile of mail was a small, thin, white envelope with "University of Washington School of Medicine" written on it. Oh man! I was going to cry. Turns out it was just financial aid info. I'm so shaken up I think I'm going to be disfunctional for the rest of the day. I just hope the next letter from UW is not also a small, thin white envelope. There's not much else I can think of that would arrive that way.

According to Dr. Hunt, Acceptance and rejection letters come in the same-sized envelopes.

Yeah, I remember him saying that. But he also said that they both come in small, thin, white envelopes. However it seems like people are getting large, brown envelopes. Maybe he said what he said so that people don't get depressed before they open the letter. Or maybe he meant that they come in identical sized envelopes if a decision is made immediately after your interview, as in you don't get on the competitive list.

I really can't imagine that you would get rejected right away once on the competive list. I can't remember when they rank you, but I would assume if you were to get rejected, it would be around then.

I got in right away without being placed on the competitive list, and my letter came in the big, brown envelope. So, yeah, I thought that was weird after hearing what Dr. Hunt said. I don't know anyone who has received a rejection letter, but I agree with hongspruce. I don't think they'll reject you right off of the competitive list. You would have to wait until April or later to hear that awful news.

Ixitil, what kind of financial aid information did you receive? I haven't gotten anything like that.

It was a reminder to fill out the FAFSA by Februrary 28th. There was also a bright, green sheet with scholarship information on it and notice saying that you MUST submit your parents' 1040 to be considered. You'll probably get it soon. I live so close to the U that I received it the same day. I checked the postmark on it: 9:17AM JAN 30. The mail was delivered to my place by noon the same day.

Competitive group............as of today...........
So sad...........Love UW..............
Keep your fingers crossed- I loved the school.

I was in the first cycle of interviews before the first excom meeting, late october I think. Still on the list. damn.

Did anyone receive competive list emails this Monday. I interviewed last week and they said they would be out on Monday....but I didn't get anything. Are they just late or is this really BAD or really GOOD news?....Dying to know whether I got in.

I'd say it's probably really great or really bad news....b/c it is the email as we know that conveys the competitive list info. Let us know what you find out!!

Mr. Postman,

Please bring me a big brown envelop from UW!

Just an FYI:

I didn't receive my big brown envelope until a week or more after people reported getting the competitive list emails. If you're in DC, even longer. Sit back and chill cause you still have a relatively long and painful wait.

Anyone know how often the excom is meeting now?

I hear they're meeting twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday.

Gotcha... I've been on competitive list since the first excom meeting so it's hard to justify not worrying a little at this point...

Yeah. I'm getting a little worried too. I've been sending letters like mad trying to get myself off the damn list. Are you in anywhere?

I'm having one of those really anxious days where the wait for news is killing me. Just wanted to vent to you guys since you understand.

Me too. I've checked the mail three times in the past 30 minutes.

I'm totally with you guys on this one. Man is this process evil! UW, if you can hear me, I love you! Wait, maybe that's coming on a little strong . . . let's be friends first and see where it goes. Damn, I really am going crazy. sigh . . .

Here I am camped out in front of the mailbox again. My neighbor, a UWSOM grad told me he was on the competitive list until well into summer. I don't think I can camp out by the mailbox for that long. Cursed anxiety!!

Wow, I thought I was having a rough time. ixitixl, you've got to step away from the mailbox. TravellinDoc, maybe you should send the UW a "BE MINE" Valentine. Just kidding.

It helps to know that I'm in good company.

It's great to know that everyone keeps their sense of humor throughout this ridiculous waiting process. I hope I get to meet you all in real life some day.

I interviewed 2 days ago, and I got on the competitive list today...

Welcome to the club.

Out of curiosity, has anybody ever heard of people getting rejected from UW post interview?

This wait is misery...

i believe 10% get rejected post-interview without enjoying the swim.

Still waiting. 🙁

Hey ixtixl....

sorry for the late response, I was at my dance competition for a week....

no, I'm not in anywhere else.... in fact, I don't even have interviews anywhere else... my numbers are very average, but I have good EC's (lots of patient contact and lab experience, volunteering, and some random things I'm really committed to like dance, choir, and soccer)..... who knows what it takes.... oh well, if I get into the UW, I don't care if I don't get any interviews anywhere else!

Good luck once again everyone!

What's the word? Let's keep talkin' about da Dub!

No word here, and I have the feeling ixitixl and TravellinDoc will post immediately if they hear something since they have been almost as dedicated to obsessing as I have.

I just recieved a financial aid letter. Is this sent to everyone on the list? Also, where did you all get a letter of intent to sign and send in? I would very much like to get my hands on one of those. Or is it the kind that you make up on your own, because I've done that.

I got one of those financial aid letters, and it about gave me a coronary. Damn I wish they'd stop playing with my emotions like that!

I interview Friday and I received one of those financial aid letters too. They might not mean anything but still good to read. Just think what a nice computer $3000 can buy. 🙂

I think the letter is sent to every potential applicant to make sure they get the FAFSA sent in on the deadline.

There is no LOI form. We've all just written our own.

Hope this helps.

still on the list

I'm on the competitive list as of 2/9/04. I just hope Dr. Samson realizes how sincere I am about UW being my top choice school. While the last year of my life was well-spent doing research, finishing a postbac, and building leadership skills in the workplace, I deferred an acceptance to try to get into UWSOM. The decision to reapply was easy though. UWSOM is awesome, and I knew I'd always wonder if I didn't try one last time. Hopefully my hard work pays off and I get one of those big brown envelopes.

Have you all turned in your FAFSA yet?

yep FAFSA went in as of last night.

I agree about the fin. letter- I almost had a heart attack too! I thought- Oh no, small envelope from my #1 choice. I was preparing to shed a few tears....

But hopefully that will not be necessary....

Sorry if this has already been answered-- is there a set date that the UWSOM reviews ALL those on the competitive list?? Wasn't it in March sometime??

do you mean washu or university of wa??

pawster... yeah, sorry about that one. a bit of a brain hiccup.

I think doomsday is March 15th. We're all supposed to get our final decision by the first week of April. I'm pretty sure the letters go out the sometime during week of March 15th.

Has anyone tried to "correct you" by saying "oh, you mean WashU" when you really do mean "UWash?" It's something that happened a few days ago to me while I was on the east coast.

No, but people on the East Coast always think I'm talking about the University of Wisconsin when I say UDub!

Is that the word from the admission's office or is that your estimate? Just curious.

Thanks! It's nice to know that the agony might end sooner than I expected.

I'm pushing conversation to over 100 posts for this topic. I get more nervous as March 15th nears. One month to get accepted! What can be done? Hmmm.

Update:

I just got of the phone with the admissions department and was told the adcom's meeting schedule for the next month. For residents of washington they will meet: Feb. 25th, Mar. 3rd, 10th, and 17th. The final meeting to determine final acceptance, rejected, and waiting list for all applicants will be Mar. 23rd - 25th. So everyone will know their status around the first week of april. She did inform me that no matter what the decision they will send a letter in the mail. Hope this gives everyone a better idea of what's going on. Good Luck to all, it won't be long now... unless you get waitlisted. 🙁

edit: they are currently focusing on the wwami schools as they are in town meeting this week and next.

Oh damn, so WWAMI applicants will know earlier?

Oh, come on big brown envelope....
