Not to rain on your parade, but aren't you in the class of 2015 or 2016, depending on how long you take to finish your PhD? jk. Grats

surely there are mosre ucsf'ers here....

i think ucsf students and will-be ucsf students are more low-key types than students attending or going to attend other big name schools. ucsf students let the school's reputation do the talking for them.

but when does orientation start..i assume it begins mid sept like ucla, no?

I'd check that date again sometime. When they mail us more stuff, most likely. I seriously dont think it's in Oct. Should be early Sept.

Sent in my deposit a couple weeks ago! Definitely there! I checked UCSF's website and this is the 08-09 schedule...

Fall Quarter 2008
Introduction to Dentistry (D1)
September 22-October 2
Monday -Thursday
Instruction begins (all classes)
October 6
Monday

See everyone there!!!!

anyone know whether there's going to be a 2nd deposit due may 1st?

Congrats on getting in. We had two weeks of orientation prior to starting class on Oct 1st this year and I think I was drunk during half the orientation. Although you will have some introductory lectures including some anatomy during orientation. I don't think you need to submit a second deposit either. Oh, and enjoy your summer because it's going to be hell once class starts.

I haven't sent my deposit in yet-- but I'm 99% sure I'm going. Anyone know where they are going to live? Also, I remember hearing at the interview that students have their first summer off... does anyone know if that is true? Thanks!

See you all in September!

Oh yeah, how much was the first deposit? I haven't picked up my mail yet.. haha

congrats to anyone who got accepted!

I am a first year right now and absolutely love love love UCSF!

And to answer a previous question, you do have your first summer off!

You know, I just interviewed at 'SC yesterday, more or less to make sure that going to UCSF was the best thing--and now I can honestly say that I CAN'T wait to go to UCSF, and see you all there! 🙂

I also agree with Sydney433. I have been to several interviews and my visits to other schools further reinforce my decision to make UCSF my 1st choice. Go class of 2012 !

How far'd you guys have to dig to find this thread? bah. Many more buried somewhere in the other school's crap, I'm sure.

Sounds like you guys had a good tour of SF. Mine wasn't too terrific, thou. Many other schools did a more polished presentation of their school. But regardless, I knew it's a killer school.

UCSF2012, you are right that some schools does a better job at their presentations and selling their school. But when you set and you really compare what they offer to what UCSF offers, UCSF is a winner. Here's my top 10 reasons the explains why UCSF is a winner.

1. Cost. It is significantly lower from the private schools.
2. They are the creator of the minimally invasive dentistry.
3. A lot of dental research take place in here and the good thing is that they teach that to their students. A good example of that would be the "[FONT=arial,sans-serif][SIZE=-1]Caries Balance", developed by the dean of the school.
4. Location of the school. School is located in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. People from all over the world spend thousands of dollars just to visit SF.
5. Their students get about 3,700 hours of clinical experience. Most school will provide you about 2,500 hours of clinical experience.
6. During your 1st year, twice a week your classes end at 12:00 PM. You have the rest of the time for yourself. If I am not making a mistake there's no other school in the nation that offers that.
7. They are able to place a significant number of their students into specialties.
8. Your classmates are the best-of-the-best. These are people with high GPA, high DAT, and a lot of leadership skills and many other good things. This is beneficial because if you don't get something or if you face a problem there will be someone in the class to help you. Been around this group of people, would naturally motivates you to study hard.
9. They have pass & fail system.
10. UCSF has the name recognition. The school has a world wide reputation.

Can you guys recommend some decent place to live ? Do you guys think I would be able to get a 1bed room apt for $1,500-1,550 close to school...like a walking distance.

The school lists an off-campus housing site for UCSF students somewhere on their housing website. Many are houses purchased by students and you'll be helping them pay their mortgage.

A few things...

1) Yes, you get a boring a$$ orientation for 2 weeks!! Although it feels like a month or more! Bring an IPod or a pillow!

2) Yes, you get approx 2 ISO (Independant Study Options)/week but they don't always happen in the afternoon. The D1's get those at that time(especially Friday afternoon....I hate you D1's!!!!) all year but after that, they get random.

And lastly, I saw a list of why UCSF was so great but failed to see that my attendance at UCSF was not on it!?!? Hmmm...I'm sure it was a minor oversight:laugh:

How about we say the part about the classmates being the best of the best, we dedicate that to you, TheDiz.

And did anyone ask the school about all the opportunities available at UCSF? (externships, out of country externships, community stuff, etc) I'm sad to say, but I think I know more about schools I'm not going to than the school I'm going to. I just didn't learn much on the interview, partly because I was still interviewing when Dr. Perry was discussing ....stuff I missed.

Does anyone know what exactly we'll be doing during these 2 weeks? It seems like it's a lot of time for just an orientation.

I dunno how UCSF does their orientation, but my bro's school also had a 2 week orientation. During that time, the school hosted lots of outside activities and easily spent a couple tens of grand. However, I do know that UCSF may be a bit strapped for cash since public funding isn't quite extravagant.

They could have easily done everything important in about 3 days, which is about what the other schools at UCSF have for their orientation(Medical, Nursing, etc).

Like I said, get some relaxing in and maybe even some sleep during it, you are gonna need it for your first quarter, which will suck!!! :meanie:

As for the content, I don't remember too much of it. I know we had to do a few group projects and listened to a truckload of people ranging from UCSF security to the dean(At that time, the awesome Bertalomi).

Good luck to all ye UCSF'ers.......

Does anyone know when we would be working in the [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Simulation lab, is it 1st year or 2nd year?
.

Both years, all year long. You have a handpiece in your grubby little mits from day 1 (I think you even drill during orientation!)

Hey PDizzle,

How's the SimLab? Do you get your own station? Can you go and practice at your free time or you have to be in there between certain hours? And one final question, on my interview at other schools the students were saying that UCSF Simulation Lab is outdated and because of that UCSF students have a lot of troubles in their simlab ...like sometimes things don't work properly. Is this true ? or they have no idea what they are talking about.

You actually kinda share stations with your big sib(The 2nd year student that has the same number as you.(you will understand when you get there). During your scheduled class, its yours and after that, its pretty much a first come/first serve basis. Lab closes at around midnight and is usually open on the weekend. Usually the D2's get priority at their own station because its real hard for a D2 to work at another station(endo, pros, etc), while a D1 can wax anywhere. This will make sense when you get here.

As far as the lab, it's functional to me. I mean, what do really need? A high and low speed handpiece and a head to put your typodont into! We all have LCD screens in front of us so we can all see the instructors' demos. Bout 5 years back they put a lot of $$ into it and it seems fine to me.

Cya in the fall:meanie:

I've tried really hard to understand what it is UCSF looks for in an applicant, and I'm not sure I really know. I thought research, but lots of ppl with research get rejected. I thought score, but many high scorers get rejected (as well as ppl with both). A few who have gotten in have gotten rejected to all other schools. Some get LA but not SF. Legacy doesn't seem to matter much. Now, I'm thinking I got in thru randomness.

I totally agree UCSF2012... I am feeling pretty lucky right now. I am pretty average across the board, average DAT, average GPA, some research... but I am seeing people with way better scores getting rejected! I'm not complaining at all... but really... what were they looking for?! 😕
The only thing I could think of is if they have some way of thinking or knowing you really want to go to their school. I would pick someone who loved my school with lower stats over someone else that might complain all 4 years... but I'm stumped.

The REAL reason we all got into UCSF............

We are all Dead SEXY!!!!!

Schools look fo two things in an applicant.

1. Are you/ are you not a *****?
2. Are you right for our school?

What is meant by the second one is a mystery.

Actually, there is a third thing....it's being dead sexy!!!!!!

I wouldn't doubt that. I noticed some schools had more lookers than others. UCSF DID take all our pictures at the beginning of the interviews. I think they pass those around at the adcom meetings and rate our teeth, amongst other things.

i dunno....UCLA looked like a model agency.... 😀

But I definatelly saw a couple hotties at my interview..hopefully they're in, too 😉

Dating within the class? Dunno about that. So V, not into hippies and lesbians?

Do anyone feel they did well on their interview essay and that might had helped in getting acceptance? Just curious!
