Hi everyone,

I thought this would be a good way to somewhat get to know everyone who is going to be attending the UMDNJ Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in fall 2007. Also I think maybe we could all mention which state we are coming from and if we are pre-med or pre-dental. I'll start, I'm from Maryland and I'm pre-med. Well, hope to see you all soon!

Hi! Long-time lurker, first time posting. I'm pre-med and from New York.

I still haven't heard from BU MAMS, but in case that doesn't work out I'll be attending the MBS program in Newark.

edit 7/9/07: looks like I'll be attending BU instead 🙂

hello

i'm from california and a pre-dent.

Minn pre-dent and looking for a studio apartment as close to campus as possible.

Hi guys, I am about done w/ the program at UMDNJ...let me know if you have any questions! I did the program in a year and am a pre-medical student...

PS- I moved out here from CA for the program...say bye bye to rainless, humidity-free summers! haha

Thanks peppy6 for your willingness to answer questions about the program. I have a few questions:
1. How feasible do you think it is to complete the program in 1 year?
2. What is the maximum # of medical school classes an individual can take? On the website it says 3, is this correct?
3. Did you apply to medical school while in the program?
4. Do the major of students end up getting into medical school and other health professional schools? Do you know of specific numbers?
Thanks for your help!!

Hello everyone!

Since most of you were asking me the same questions, I just thought I would create one long post for all of you to read. If you still have more questions, just message me again. Hopefully I answer most of your questions here.

To start off, my experience with the program has been a very positive one. This program is a true masters program, you take courses from the graduate school with other pre-health students, people from the pharmaceutical industry, students interested in teaching and PhDs, etc…because of this, it is very different from other programs such as the SMP at Georgetown because it is not geared ONLY to pre-meds. Instead of the program telling you which classes to take, you have complete liberty in choosing your classes and your direction. There are a few required classes: Fundamentals I (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Fundamentals II (Cell Biology), a seminar course, and a lab rotation. Other than that, it’s up to you. You can also get a concentration in a certain field and get a certificate in addition to your masters degree. These fields are bioinformatics, stem cell biology, and pharmacology.

In terms of medical school courses, there are a few offered: molecular and genetic medicine (MGM), medical physiology, and medical neuroscience. This past year, MGM was not offered to everyone, and I’m not sure what the requirements were for it. For pre-dental students, I think you are allowed to take Physiology and Biochemistry- but again, I am not sure if everyone is allowed to take them. So you may want to contact Dr. Ingoglia at GSBS or whoever you’re told to contact to find out if these options are available for you. MGM and Dental Physiology are first semester courses, and medical physiology, medical neuroscience, and dental biochemistry are second semester. Someone asked about taking undergraduate courses…to be honest, I’m not sure. I’ve only seen the graduate school side of things and I’m not aware of any undergraduate courses here.

The courses are all different in terms of difficulty level. I have had some very challenging classes and some that were pretty easy. I do feel that I have learned a lot more from all of my classes in general, and that will help you in the future.

You can definitely do this program in one year but make sure you plan accordingly from day one. I did the program in one year. I chose to do the MS program, that is, the masters with thesis option. You can do this, which is 25 course units and 5 thesis units, or the MSBS option which is no thesis, 30 course units.
I know a handful of people that applied during the year but have not really followed up with them to see if they have gotten in. Most people seem to apply after the program but I think it could work either way. Make sure to submit your first semester grades from the program if you’re applying this year and maybe go in and talk to advisors in the medical school/dental school deans’ offices. This can allow you to go over your application w/ them and introduce yourself as you apply.

Since this program is very new, I don’t believe they have tracked graduates to see if they have gone on to medical school and such. In general, however, students who do programs such as these greatly increase their chances of getting into their desired schools. Taking more classes, doing well, and getting more experience can only help, so I think as long as you work hard here, it will only help you get to where you want to be. I have talked a few students who did this program and are now at the medical school so it definitely helps!

One thing that may be considered a weakness of the program by some of you is that there is not yet a lot of guidance in the program. Many of you may have heard of Dr. Ingoglia, the associate dean of the graduate school. He is a GREAT resources and great person in general and I highly recommend talking to him. He is the main go-to person at the moment, but I know they are looking to make changes in UMDNJ in general that will make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. I have not had a big problem with how things are run b/c Dr. Ingoglia is great at pointing you in the right direction to get your questions answered. Get to know him!

Okay, now for living. I am from CA and had never been to NJ before this program. I got lucky and found someone on studentdoctor.net who was from NJ and is now my roommate here. I definitely lucked out in finding a great roommate, especially one who was familiar with the area. So ask around and maybe that will work for you. For those of you who have not been to Newark, it is a typical urban city that’s rough around the edges. It is a city in which you should be careful when walking around. I don’t mean to scare you, because things aren’t that bad walking around campus, but you need to be aware of your surroundings. There is new on-campus housing that is supposed to be very nice and I also know some people who live in a place called Society Hill, which is within walking distance of the university. They all seem to like it okay. I was told by some friends to not live in Newark so I took their advice and live in Jersey City. Personally, I am glad I live in Jersey City because we live within walking distance to the subway into NYC and close to grocery stores, target, staples, a mall, etc. The commute is also not that bad, w/o traffic it only takes about 15-20 min. The area, to me anyway, generally seems more secure and I just feel more comfortable living here.

One thing that made me decide to bring a car was that most of our graduate school classes are offered in the evenings between 5-9pm. There is a bus that picks up and drops off students between Newark Penn Station and campus but I didn’t want to wait around for the bus after class and make it a longer trip home. But there are trains and the PATH subway that goes into Newark which may be accessible to you depending on where you choose to live.

Okay, sorry for such a LONG post…I hope it helps you guys! And of course, feel free to message w/ more questions…Good luck!

thanks for all the help peppy. u def helped in giving me a good idea of what the program was about and how it was structured and what not. i'm looking forward to it.

i'm from nj and i'm pre med, for those who were curious.

peppy was there time to work part time?

Yeah definitely manageable. Since the classes are offerend mostly in the evenings you can do other things during the day. Also, most of the classes grade you only on exams, that is, you don't have other additional assignments to worry about very often so you don't have to be studying every minute of every day. I took the classes, did a thesis, worked at a coffee shop part time, took MCAT classes, and played on a soccer team...and I am by no means a genius so I have to study a lot...so it works out fine if you manage your time well!

Haha I just realized that I might be giving you guys too many side ideas...make sure to feel the program out for yourselves first. Difficulty levels really depends on each person and since this program is meant to help you get into professional schools, you really don't want to mess things up...so, with that being said, don't over commit yourselves from the start, wait to see how the program is for you and if you think you can add things on, go for it!

i just got accepted into the MBS program. i sent in my acceptance form last week. i was just wondering if anyone else received any information from the school about the program such as the curriculum, if there's registration priority on classes, immunization records, if there is a deposit, etc. any information would be helpful....thank you.

congrats on your acceptance! of the topics you mentioned, i've only received stuff about immunization records. they haven't sent me anything about classes, and i don't think there was a deposit.

is this the case for everyone else too?

Is the umdnj gsbs a smp or just a masters program?

I'm also going to be attending the program in the fall. I was wondering if anyone knows when we'll be able to register for courses? I got accepted into the MGM, but thats all I know so far?

How did you find out?

its a masters program...you take graduate level classes
~m~

I have a 3.2 ugrad gpa and high mcat would I be better of with an smp or this master's program? By the way, I am a nj resident.

You register for classes on the day of orientation.

pre-dent from new york

looking for apartments, thinking about jersey city, but just heard that jersey city isn't all that nice. "newark's little brother" as it was put. thoughts please.

Actually, it really depends where in Jersey City you live. I chose to live in Jersey City and LOVE it. The tougher parts of Jersey City include the area known as The Heights. I would recommend not living there. But the downtown and Newport areas aren't bad. I live in the Newport area, I pay more than I would've liked to but the apartment is in a good area, close to shopping (malls, restaurants, grocery stores, target, etc), near the PATH train into NYC, and only a 15-20 min drive to school. So there are nice parts of JC too.

I am going to the Stratford program - hopefully to stay for 5 years total 😀

Hi Xavier.

UMDNJ-SOM is my first choice as well. Does this program you're quoting specifically have "linkage" ? I have an undergraduate Degree (B.A. from Penn State '92 and J.D basically from Temple '97) what i don't have in order to complete an application are the pre req's so all I'm basically doing is taking whatever I'm missing ( 2nd Bio, Organic, a Physics etc) at Stockton which is closer to my home.

If there were some "specific" type of linkage between the programs, sure I'd consider a commute in the fall but otherwise, I would think I'd just take them at the closer school and see how the application process goes.

Thanks in advance,

BK

Hello. I'm starting gsbs this fall. I was wondering how did you find your apartment in jersey city. Did you go through a broker or through craigslist?

I think filling in the gaps at any decent U/G institution is fine. I was chem engr and had to do bio as it was not necessary in my u/g career.

whats up everyone..im getting mixed opinions about UMDNJ..some people tell me its only a good program if u want to go to UMDNJ for med school but not well recognized by other schools..i would think it would be recognized since youre taking a lot of good courses..but ne way, i was wondering what my chances would be to get into robertwood johnson or njms after kicking as at the ms program..and with a 34T (35T if you take composites)..and the regular extracurriculars..or if ne thing..other schools as well..thanks!

hey, i'm predent and am looking for housing asap. anybody have and leads on good areas to look around or any other tips?

also, do you think its necessary to have a car?

About the courses: You're right abyshaky, the UMDNJ program is not as well known as say the programs at Georgetown or Boston U but that does not mean that it's a bad thing to do. The program IS gaining more recognition, and in more time it will be better known...the important thing is that if this is one of your only options, you should really take advantage of it and make the most of it. While the program may not be well known, the difficulty of medical school classes in general is, so if you want to prove to schools you can do well in medical school, it may not be a bad idea to take a medical school class at UMDNJ while you're in the MS/MBS program to do just that. You have a great MCAT score and I am sure that if you do well in your classes at UMDNJ, you will have a great shot at both of these schools. While you are there, you can even schedule a meeting with the medical school Dean to go over your application. From what I hear from my friends, he is a great person to talk to and he will really guide you in what your application's strengths and weaknesses are. Don't worry about your chances so much, just worry about doing well while you're here!

Hello. I'm starting gsbs this fall. I was wondering how did you find your apartment in jersey city. Did you go through a broker or through craigslist?

Well I actually met my current roommate on SDN before I moved out here and she did the searching since she lives in NJ close to Jersey City. She went around to apartment buildings in the area and go lucky one day and found this one we're living in...so unfortunately, I can't offer you much advice about how to go about looking for one. Definitely try craigslist or maybe call places...I live in the Hamilton Park area of Jersey City which is close to the Newport area...these are both nice, safe places to live if you want to look them up specifically. Feel free to send me a private message if you have more questions!

See you all at orientation!

Has anyone heard about their financial aid? Seeing as how the program starts soon, I'd like to know if I can afford it.

Does UMDNJ usually give lots of aid?

congrats!

I thought you're suppose to register during orientation or something?😕

The financial aid office is really slow, but they reply to all email. I saw Ms Pentia (financial aid office) yesterday and she informed me that GSBS students would be hearing from her within th enext two weeks She says that we should check our email for award letters. She made it seem like I should not be worrying. I just hope she comesd through with the award letters.

They ave to work out the aid for matric students then work out the loan options for non-matric students.

As for registration, we do that at orientation

hope this helps

I know im really late but I just decided earlier this week that I am going to be attending the program. Have u guys heard anything from financial aid yet?

hi! i'll be at UMDNJ this fall..... I'm a pre-dent from NY btw.... have fun with what's left of the summer you guys!

(just a random vent..... move-in days are always on my bday.... cudn't they make it aug 16th? ugh)

A pre-dent here, and had a quick question. Is there a difference between the Stratford and Newark campuses ? I noticed in terms of curriculum, one capped the number of medical school courses at two, while the other makes no mention. Thanks for your time !

just wondering if there is any new data on the % of students who attend GSBS at neward and get in to medical school? I am trying to decide whether to do SMP at Boston University or MBS at UMDNJ-newark. if they are both good programs i would rather pay a lot less money at my state school's program. any thoughts. MCAT 29 P and undergrad gpa 3.2 (not good i know but plan is to rock the masters program)

I would recommend the boston program. The boston smp has been around longer and has higher matriculation stats. Personally, I would not fret over a 10K difference. Rock the boston program my man!

A few differences to point out:

1. If you have a strong desire to stay in state for medical school (i.e. NJMS, RWJ, SOM), then go with UMDNJ. They look favorably upon their graduate students.
2. Boston University has a hefty tuition, a large class size, and the city is expensive to live in. You will get more individualized attention at UMDNJ.
3. Boston University's program is more well known and has been around a lot longer, thus more medical schools are aware of it's rigor.
4. However, if you do exceptionally well in graduate school, it isn't going to matter where you go. Each program is what you make of it.
5. If I remember correctly, ~80% of students in Boston's program EVENTUALLY matriculate into professional school. UMDNJ does not actually "publish" this information, but the program directors at Newark and Stratford would be happy to assist you. The only thing I know for sure numbers-wise is that at UMDNJ-Stratford, 14 of the graduate students last year were offered admission to the School of Osteopathic Medicine. I am not sure how many students gained admission to other schools from Stratford, or what Newark's numbers looked like.

Granted, I am a little biased since I attend UMDNJ and chose it over my Boston U and Tufts acceptances.

hey,

does anyone know the class sizes in most of the umdnj masters upper level science courses??

ive been trying to find this out for the past week hahaha

thanks!

might be a bit early for me to know this, but where can i "review" or look at courses offered in the fall 08 session?

thanks

I am in the stratford program, but we have some similar classes. Please recommend any. Thank you.
