But according to what I read they were not far off from the actual percentage of Indian docs if you include FMGs and current practicing Indian doctors. That is the real reason that we are not under represented. I read on my town's Indian association's website that 38% of doctors in the whole nation were of Indian nationality. that is the real reason we are not URM but rather ORM.

I always feel better after you post.😍

wait what?

I merely said what I said as a simple joke. I know that we're over represented and all that bla bla bla.

It was just a silly comment. Although the next poster who used mock incredulity at us not getting favorable treatment because we are minorities may seem like there was some seriousness to the conversation.

In any case, Im totally understanding of our and everone's situation in terms of race, income, and admissions

not at all, not offended in anyway..just clarifying 🙂

so would you say applying to cincy is a waste of time with what I have?

yea 37S 14 P 11 V 12 B
unfortunately as an Indian I doubt I'm underprivileged even for income.

So basically you dont think I could get into medical school after one year of SMP even if I do top notch?

I love your ECs and your MCAT, but your GPAs are just going to kill you. No SMP can get you past a 3.0 autoscreen outside its borders.

That said, you could get lucky with EVMS, which is kind of a golden ticket. But I wouldn't put much hope in a Cinn or Gtown.

In your shoes I'd be thinking 2nd bachelors to get that GPA over 3.0, and unfortunately also plan on an SMP, and hope hard that your MCAT clock doesn't run out. Or look at DO to bypass the SMP.

Man, rural India clinic work w/local lang, that's a KILLER EC. I'm hoping to do a surg rotation in India but I got nothin' for language.

Best of luck to you.

Here's the way I see it. I'm pretty smart and have decent ECs I say decent because while my india work is cool it was in high school.

Also, my research and volunteering is done by a lot of med students. I think my only standout is my 37 MCAT. also, it expires very soon( I took it in 2006)

I want to at least go to a good medical school. I want to do research and I know that caliber of medical school matters at this level. I also want to do a PhD...I'm not really interested in practicing medicine. Perhaps I should do a Drexel Program for a year and work at NIH for a couple years? 1 or 2 years?

And in the process retake the MCATs and hopefully get a 33+ and apply to medical school when im 25 or 26...(23 right now)

I want to at least get into a decent school. could any of this overcome my undergrad GPA?
what do you think?

actually i'd probably have to get a 37 or higher since a lower score the second time(due to expiration) would look stupid. I only said 33 because I'd probably be working while studying for the test.

I'd say be vague on the chronology and play it up.

Are you sure you need an MD to do the work you want? How about a science PhD with an MPH? Man, skip this madness if you don't want to practice as a physician.

I think you need a ferociously strong performance in a noncompetitive stepping stone to get to anything competitive. The NIH programs and MSTPs are going to be out of reach. But I'd be surprised if you can't land a PhD with funding, maybe after a year working in a lab. If you still want to do med school after you finish a PhD, enough to retake the MCAT, and you apply broadly, then I think you'd have a decent shot.

All that said, I consider it a mistake to apply to med school, period, with a sub-3.0 GPA. A sub-3.5 GPA is cause for pain. There are anecdotes who get away with sub-3.0's, but you can't plan on being an anecdote.

bolty.

well, I'm really interested in studying the brain. Unfortunately the current trend in brain research for PhDs is focused more on brain imaging as well as other areas that I've found to be uninteresting working in various neuroscience labs.

I think an MD/PhD will give me the opportunity to study the brain better than I would as a PhD. I think clinical work is very important in trying to uncover how the brain works and studying patients with neurological dysfunctions.

Right now, I have two issues. The first is that im late into applying what I want. So basically I have to do one of these SMP programs since the deadlines havn't arrived yet. I'll check into the NIH programs to see if I can't get a job yet in something neuro related.

The second is that if I can't work in a lab or study well enough theres very little chance I'll get into a PhD program. Many require a 3.0+ GPA. I guess i could make up for it with stellar subject GREs but thats a big if.

I was looking at a few PhD programs...almost all require a 3.0 or higher. Even then many of these programs have students coming from caltech, MIT, etc...

get over feeling the need to go to a big name program and you'll find a phd program that will take you. network and find someone with funding and you're in.... not nearly as hard to get into phd programs as it is md, but going through 4-6 years of a phd program is hell compared to med school as far as I'm concerned. have watched way too many friends get jerked around during their phd years for me to ever consider going that route....
