Cool... Did you receive any additional information about what's going to be happening on Thursday/Friday? I don't know if they just never sent anything to us or if I just never received anything.

I just got an email today from my student host, but I haven't gotten any other details. I wish they had sent us more information earlier.

Anyone recieve their financial aid awards package yet? For those who got their stuff complete in early march or earlier.

I had everything in by late March. I called them yesterday to ask them if they received it and they volunteered the information that I should hear something in about 2 weeks.

do we know if they send those out in batches?? or individually as we sent in our applications

I got it a couple days ago. They email you a copy, the same day they send it in the mail. I had everything in by late Feb I believe.

Whee! I'm coming here. (Unless I get off the Penn waitlist.) But yay!

Hey peeps. Congrats on choosing (or at least having as a choice) Pritzker! I love it, everyone else loves it, and you will love it too.

If you EVER have ANY questions about ANYTHING - financial aid, getting out of biochem, where to live, rent vs. buy, why to choose Pritzker, what to do this summer, what to do next summer, whatever - I am more than happy to answer them here, via email ([email protected]), or via IM (nosugrefneb) or you can always stalk me if you're in Chicago.🙂

Peace out folks.
Ben

Could you perhaps post something about the international opportunities for med students to take part in? I'm interested in research opportunities during the summer between MS1 and MS2 in developing countries (which I'm sure is probably possible), but I am especially interested in the possibility to do an away clinical rotation somewhere in Africa (I have a major interest in international public health and especially in the AIDS epidemic in various African nations). International health doesn't seem like something Chicago emphasizes or provides easily accessible programs/opportunities for...which is pretty much the main reason it's not my overall first choice if I could go anywhere I want. But if you know of anything I am missing, please share!

DMN, I saw your post in the Pitt thread. What tipped the balance for you? Man, I can't wait for this month to be over....

hi~ does anyone know if Pritzker is good with scholarships and grants? how about the range of money they usually give out per person? ex. $0 - $80,000 over 4 years? I was reading the financial aid info we got on interview day.. and it says something about pritzker scholarship being $0-$ 20,000 a year or something..pretty vague. can anyone who had received their package already this year or any past students comment on this? because it seems like, being on your own, 4 years at pritzker will be $280,000 then + the interest on your loan... I am scared:scared:

So I actually can't comment on this too much because I've never had the opportunity to do international stuff, but I can tell you there are plenty of routes you could take. The most obvious is a student group called Remedy, which fundraises throughout the year and pairs with a local physician for the purposes of delivering medical supplies to a clinic in a country of their choosing (they used to go to Cuba, but for the past two years I think it's been Peru). Usually people stay afterward to volunteer in clinics or vacation, but we had some people from my class participate in the summer research program as well from their site in Peru. Additionally, there is a Keith Edson Scholarship, which I don't know too much about, but it allows for international health research and has been a popular option among those interested in this topic. Finally, there are always a handful of people who find other various scholarships and research opportunities that travel to India and Africa and South America for the summer, so it's definitely doable. To be honest, I'm not too sure how international away rotations work yet, but I'll ask around and get back to you. I can tell you that all third year rotations have to be done at UC hospitals or some other affiliated hospitals, so the only opportunity you'd have to do that is in fourth year.

You're correct: I wouldn't necessarily say Pritzker emphasizes international opportunities, but they are most definitely available to you if you're looking for them.

DMN, I saw your post in the Pitt thread. What tipped the balance for you? Man, I can't wait for this month to be over....

I think I posted that a bit hastily...I would still consider Pitt if accepted, but right now I am definitely leaning towards Pritzker. Not one single thing tipped the balance for me, but I'd say the biggest things were:
1. Location - I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life except for college and don't really want to go back. It isn't so much that I dislike Pittsburgh...I just like the nomadic lifestyle and the opportunity to explore new cities. Plus, although I don't dislike Pittsburgh, Chicago has more to offer.
2. Administration - I've had nothing but problems with Pitt during the application process. First, there were problems with my letters of recommendation. Then, I was home for a month and they wouldn't work to schedule my interview while I was 20 minutes away (this wasn't a last minute request of mine or anything, I let them know over a month in advance when I would be home)--so I had to fly back again 2 weeks later and spend another $250. And well, you read about my lack of receipt of a decision...which means even I were accepted (which chances may be slim now since I'm sure the class is full or almost full), I missed the second look weekend, etc. etc. Pritzker, on the other hand, seems to have the best administration of any school I looked at. They mail me soooo much information since I've been accepted. I'm also not very shy about emailing them my millions of questions that are important to my decision, and Joni answers my questions with lengthy responses within a matter of hours. I've emailed a few students as well who also replied with very very thorough and helpful answers, and I am sure they are very busy. Pritzker just seems more accomodating and there for the students, if that makes any sense?
3. Patient Population - I lived in Pittsburgh--it's not diverse. From my visit to Hyde Park and UChicago, I feel I'd get a much better mix.
4. Student Comments - As much as students at Pitt seemed to love Pitt, many of them also had complaints about various aspects of the school/administration. The students I met at Chicago really didn't seem to have complaints about anything. I'm sure it's not perfect, but perhaps it is *more* perfect?
5. Grading System - I'd prefer the pass/fail system at Chicago, but this wasn't a huge deal to me at first. I could live with Pitts Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail system or whatever it is exactly that they have in place, but once they started talking about the "two standard deviations below the mean" policy and spent a good 15 minutes just explaining the math behind the grading system, it seemed more of a hassle that would create competition. If they had strict numerical cutoffs for the various distinctions, I don't think it would be as bad.
6. Lectures - I like them! Feed me the info and I will digest and synthesize.

The one thing that is making me sort of consider Pitt a little bit still is the areas of concentration. They have one strictly on international health, which I think might be catered to my own interests a little more. They are also big on neuroscience, which is another huge interest of mine. Ideally, I'd want everything about Chicago with Pitt's special programs!

Anybody else get their financial aid packages yet? I'm anxiously waiting to see if I'll be able to afford to come here.

Also, anyone else going on the May 1st second look??

I LOVE PRITZKER! I decided to come here a month ago and never looked back, even though I'm from so. cal and everyone is telling me I'm going to freeze. Hello! I'll buy a jacet and some shoes, both things I lack here at home.

Anyway, to "Ben" - thanks for all of the info.! You sound exactly like the other students I met at Pritzker during my interview day - friendly, helpful, and happy to be there. It totally factored into my decision. Secondly, to those who are waiting for fin. aid, I just got my packet/e-mail last week so no worries, they're on the way. My packet was SWEET! I am going to be able to afford med school more than I was able to afford undergrad! HA! I got a FAT Pritzker scholarship and qualified for the max amounts of Perkins, Sub. Stafford and Unsub. Stafford to completely cover everything. I'm so so so happy to be going to Pritzker and will be at the re-visit day next Monday (April 17) if anyone else wants to meet! YAY! Congrats to us for getting into the best school ever! And don't listen to AProfessor - well, listen to them but with a grain of salt. There are lots of scary things happening in every city - don't you watch Law and Order SVU? If you use common sense and are aware of your surroundings, you'll be fine. Sure there are the freak incidents but the probability of it happening to you is very low and probably the same as any other big city. And since when is the city the big factor? Go to the school for the school! If I would have made location my biggest priority, I would have been sad to leave Cali but now I'm nothing but excited!

Finally, don't you just love the reaction you get when you say you are going to Pritzker? I would say the 3 top responses I've heard are: 1) "Wow! That is an incredible school, you must be thrilled"; 2) "That school is so prestigious! You will get such a good residency!"; and 3)"Oh my God you got in at Pritzker? I am so jealous!"..............such an ego boost when the last semester of college is a busy hellhole for me 😀

Awesome. I'm always psyched to see that kind of enthusiasm!

PS: The new and beautiful Pritzker site is up, replacing the old, crappy, 80s-ish site: http://pritzker.bsd.uchicago.edu/ . Check it out. Explore it. Take the survey. Make comments. Love it.

I will see you there. BTW, Joni told me that we will be getting emails about hosting next week. They haven't started on us yet b/c there's another revisit coming up before ours on the 17th. I'm looking forward to seeing you! 🙂

I LOVE PRITZKER - you guys, we are the chosen few. Don't take this godsend for granted....go to Pritzker and be my classmate! I know it's going to be a big change for some of us....yes we will have to be jackets and shoes, lose our tans, get used to snow shoveling and car-ice picking, study til our brains hurt and all of that.....but if we stick together, we can do it together and it all will be FUN! We finally made it to med school and a GREAT med school so live it up! We are Pritzkerites fo' life 🙂 Gosh, I am just so excited. Sorry if people want to puke after reading my posts but I am just so ready to start at Pritzker. I have a feeling it is going to be life-changing in the best possible way 🙂 😍

Speaking of expectations and enthusiasm--this school keeps FAR EXCEEDING all of my expectations and I am slowly becoming Dolfin-level enthused about Pritzker! I'll be honest with you--I had my ONLY bad interview experience of the entire process with my faculty interviewer at Chicago, so that is why I don't have the "I LOVE THIS PLACE!" enthusiasm that so many other people seem to have. I really wish I did because ever since my visit, everthing I read/hear/learn/etc. about Pritzker makes it seem uncomparable in terms of student happiness and opportunities. I know I mentioned this before, but I am seriously so amazed by the thoroughness of the responses I get when I have any sort of question whatsoever. The administration, in particular, is sooooo incredible. Perhaps I am just used to being blown off by most med schools when I call or email them, but WOW! And that said--I am coming to Pritzker 100% now (yes, Q, it beats Pitt!)!

(Okay so I'm still secretly holding out for getting off my dream school's waitlist, but Pritzker has impressed me so much that I can't even bring myself to write them a letter saying I'd absolutely go there if accepted. If you would have asked me that three months ago, I would have run out into moving traffic/given up my future first-born/etc. to be accepted there!)

woah! the love on this thread!!! did u also get a fat financial aid package D? 🙂

I love Pritzker as well!!! I really do. I thought the second look was great, better than the others I have been on 🙂 if everything come through, I hope I will get to see dofingrl and DNM there

One of my fellow interviewees had a really bad faculty interview experience as well. I was going to ask if you were him, but since you're a she, I'm guessing that's out of the question. Makes me wonder if they've got a bad apple interviewing people, though.

I had an MD who did genetics research. I'm pretty sure my interview was his first attempt at human-human interaction. You can read more about it here (it's actually the only interview I posted feedback for):
http://www.studentdoctor.net/interview/show_entry.asp?ID=13322

But yeah, I wasn't the person on your interview day. 1. I am a she, and 2. I don't recall mentioning my interview experience to anybody else while I was there. It might have been the same person, though. I actually met a girl at my GW interview that had a twin sister who had a bad faculty interview at Chicago as well...so that's 3. They usually do about 3 a year, right? 🙂

i hate to add to the list, but I also had a bad faculty interview. I remembered it lasted about 10 minutes, and I was sure I wouldn't get in afterward.

I got my financial aid package today too (it went to my home address, though, but my uncle left me a message) and just about HALF is covered by the "pritzker scholarship" grant. Niceeee!

OMG, I got a big scholarship from them too that covers about half! Sweet! Congratulations! They are so generous with their aid, it's ri-donk-ulous. And to answer to other posts, yes I know I'm crazy excited with lofty expectations but I don't mind being the starry-eyed one full of hope and dreams and all of that crud. Maybe I'm just so over college at the moment and feel like life is finally gettin' to be interesting since I'm heading out on my own path.....yeah, it's late and I need some sleep. Keep postin' though! This is my fave thread for sure - I like all you guys 🙂

not true... 🙁 I just got my financial aid package, too.. and the scholarship is NOT even close to half of my total cost for the first year.. is there anyway I can ask them for more money? hahaha it is nice that they tell you how much they are going to give you over 4 years... even though it is not as much as I would like

Don't worry, you're not the only one whose grant doesn't help you out as much as you would like! I'm going to be ridiculously in debt too.

is pritzker grant money merit and financial need based? do they split out the difference?

It's kinda of weird actually. According to their website: The Pritzker School of Medicine has about $2.5 million dollars in scholarship money for students in the regular MD curriculum. Some of this fellowship and scholarship fund is awarded for merit or for a particular course of study, but most is awarded based on financial need as part of a financial aid package. Nearly all Pritzker students who have financial need are awarded some University fellowship or scholarship money. Awards are generally in the range of $2000 to $20,000 per year.

So it could be merit and need. I'm guessing if you got over 20K a year there was merit involved then.

I just declined acceptances/withdrew from waitlists at 7 schools! The only one I am still holding onto is Penn. So Pritzker is almost official official!

Just do it! lol  Just kidding pal, take as long as you need but Pritzker is the place to be! Good luck with your decision on what to do, it is a great one to have! You'll be happy either way I bet 👍

I got my package too....pretty decent scholarship money, but definitely doesnt cover half of tuition (i'm envious but happy nonetheless). Does anyone how the package changes over the years depending on parents income increasing and personal expenses increasing (moving downtown second or third year would certainly raise expenses). 1 month until a final decision on where we would be for next 4 years of our lives....

I got my financial aid package. it is m... okay, I guess. definitely not impressive (not a bit close to 1/2) I will be graduating with a very significant amout of debt.

what is a decent amount of scholarship from pritzker?

So apparently my "mean" interviewer teaches a class... Oh well, maybe he's really a great guy and was just testing me!

I'm thinking of revisiting on my own in June sometime to go serious apartment hunting...by "serious," I mean I'm going to hit up everything that says "for rent" in Chicago. I already can't officially settle on a med school, so there is no way I'm going to settle on an apartment without beating the search to death...I don't know how I'm ever going to choose a specialty in a few years. I can't even choose what to make for a final project in ceramics (yes, I'm taking ceramics).

Anyway, the point of this post is...Do you think it would be asking too much for them to arrange for me to stay with a current student during my visit since it is not during a revisit day?

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

😍 👍 😀 😉 🙂 :hardy:

I got my financial aid package and I can afford it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to Pritzker, baby!!!!!!!! See you all there!!!!!!!!

(OK, I'm a little excited.)

Settling down, now...

DNM503, I certainly don't think it would hurt to ask them about staying with a student. The worst they can say is no, right?

MM, that's great news. 👍 See you at second look. 😀

so I didn't get a big financial aid package, and I know I may have to beg for money on the street. but you know what, I am going to pack my bags and move to Chicago just because I like Pritzker that much. 🙂

It's going to be awesome. I can't believe it's already right around the corner!

So, I think we should all share some random little detail about ourselves in the interest of getting to know each other better. I'll start.

I have this ratty old oversized sweatshirt from my first undergrad, St. Norbert College in DePere, WI. It's approaching 15 years old now. You can't read the lettering anymore and there are random holes here and there, but I don't care. I love it and it's my favorite article of clothing. It's my test day sweatshirt... I wear it for just about every exam. I wore it for the MCAT.

I got a few Wisconsin sweatshirts, but they're just not the same. This piece of cloth has history, baby. It's been with me through good and bad -- I'm sticking with it through medical school.

So when you see the girl in the green rags, that'll be me. 🙂

Wahoooo.

You will be sent clothing info over the summer and you can buy all the Pritzker paraphernalia in the world. I don't think the bookstore sells Pritzker-specific stuff except car stickers, but it's worth a shot.

Also, anyone is welcome to stay with my girlfriend and me if you're in town and we'd be more than happy to host you. (We have 2 cats though so if you're allergic, bring a crapload of Benadryl.) Just shoot me an email if you're planning to come in anytime other than on the revisit days and need a place to stay.

ok gang... this may be a really stupid question... so after you send back your paperwork to financial aid office, are you supposed to apply for stafford online?? or do nothing?

by the way, I called the financial aid office one day and they definitely recommed MedLoan over the others.

Can we beg together, then? I, too, didn't get as much financial aid as I had hoped for, but I'm still going to Pritzker. It's a phenomenal school and I can't wait to relocate to Chicago this summer 😀 When is everyone planning on moving up there?

Confession: I already bought a Pritzker Med T-shirt through the bookstore back in March when I was up there to find an apartment... sad, I know.

I'm not sure. End of August/beginning of September, probably. When do leases usually start in Chicago... is there any particular time? (I come from Madison, where >95% of all leases start August 15th.)

Confession: I already bought a Pritzker Med T-shirt through the bookstore back in March when I was up there to find an apartment... sad, I know.

let's do beg together!!!! maybe we can get more money that way 😉

I am a dork and actually will be moving to hyde park end of June beginning of July (if I don't change my mind on U of C before 5/15). I know... but I like to take my time to learn a new place and new area and to settle in.

Ha ha. I signed up for the class as well--the topic certainly sounds intriguing. I'm planning on moving up around July 20th because like you, I need some time to explore Chicago and learn my way around using public transit. It's funny, though, because I have over a dozen friends who are planning on visiting me before classes start in September, so I guess I don't have long to learn my way around, then!
