DMN, I saw your post in the Pitt thread. What tipped the balance for you? Man, I can't wait for this month to be over....
I think I posted that a bit hastily...I would still consider Pitt if accepted, but right now I am definitely leaning towards Pritzker. Not one single thing tipped the balance for me, but I'd say the biggest things were:
1. Location - I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life except for college and don't really want to go back. It isn't so much that I dislike Pittsburgh...I just like the nomadic lifestyle and the opportunity to explore new cities. Plus, although I don't dislike Pittsburgh, Chicago has more to offer.
2. Administration - I've had nothing but problems with Pitt during the application process. First, there were problems with my letters of recommendation. Then, I was home for a month and they wouldn't work to schedule my interview while I was 20 minutes away (this wasn't a last minute request of mine or anything, I let them know over a month in advance when I would be home)--so I had to fly back again 2 weeks later and spend another $250. And well, you read about my lack of receipt of a decision...which means even I were accepted (which chances may be slim now since I'm sure the class is full or almost full), I missed the second look weekend, etc. etc. Pritzker, on the other hand, seems to have the best administration of any school I looked at. They mail me soooo much information since I've been accepted. I'm also not very shy about emailing them my millions of questions that are important to my decision, and Joni answers my questions with lengthy responses within a matter of hours. I've emailed a few students as well who also replied with very very thorough and helpful answers, and I am sure they are very busy. Pritzker just seems more accomodating and there for the students, if that makes any sense?
3. Patient Population - I lived in Pittsburgh--it's not diverse. From my visit to Hyde Park and UChicago, I feel I'd get a much better mix.
4. Student Comments - As much as students at Pitt seemed to love Pitt, many of them also had complaints about various aspects of the school/administration. The students I met at Chicago really didn't seem to have complaints about anything. I'm sure it's not perfect, but perhaps it is *more* perfect?
5. Grading System - I'd prefer the pass/fail system at Chicago, but this wasn't a huge deal to me at first. I could live with Pitts Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail system or whatever it is exactly that they have in place, but once they started talking about the "two standard deviations below the mean" policy and spent a good 15 minutes just explaining the math behind the grading system, it seemed more of a hassle that would create competition. If they had strict numerical cutoffs for the various distinctions, I don't think it would be as bad.
6. Lectures - I like them! Feed me the info and I will digest and synthesize.
The one thing that is making me sort of consider Pitt a little bit still is the areas of concentration. They have one strictly on international health, which I think might be catered to my own interests a little more. They are also big on neuroscience, which is another huge interest of mine. Ideally, I'd want everything about Chicago with Pitt's special programs!
