~*~*~Official USUHS Class of 2011 Thread~*~*~

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been meaning to add my info:

Dan
Born in CA, family now in NV, legal residence is Pittsburgh, PA (wife's home)
B.S. Aerospace Engineering - United States Naval Academy
Currently a submarine officer (hence "bubblehead")
Wife is a 2003 graduate of USUHS

Still waiting on Hopkins' decision before making my final decision - either way, I love USUHS!

I'll start:

From NY, went to school in Maine, work in Boston. I will be in the Army. I'm not prior service. I want to do surgery.

I'm Jared from PA. USAF, no prior service.

I can't wait to get to USU in the fall!! Our class is going to be awesome!

Has anyone recieved info about eQIP yet? I'm paranoid that their email got caught in my school's junk email filter...

Marc from TX, 22, civilian
Graduated from Creighton in 2006
I'm still waiting to hear if i'm accepted, but i chose army
USUHS is my #1 choice

I got my waiver!!!!!!!!!
Finally!!!!!!!
(It only took 3+ months)

A question for those that have already gotten acceptance letters... For anyone that was a non-trad student or is changing career paths into medicine, was there anything you felt "proved" you were committed to the medical field? Or something that you got really good feedback on during your interview?

I have a high GPA (both before and recently taking pre-reqs) and a 32 MCAT. But other then volunteering I have relatively little medical experience, so I think this could be my problem area. What about doing EMT training?

The vast majority of my experience within the medical field came from volunteer work with the American Red Cross and physician shadowing. While I'm sure the admissions committees want to verify that you have tested your decision to pursue medicine as a career, this has very rarely been directly discussed during my interviews (although I have brought it up in answering the question of why I am pursuing the career change).

Hope this helps.

BTW, I don't think you need to do EMT training - don't waste the time and energy unless that is something that you are really interested in doing. I don't think it's worth it to boost the application.

I think getting you EMT-B can be very helpful, or it can be a total waste of time. I have loved my time as an EMT, and I still work on the weekends. Being an EMT reinforced my desire to practice medicine (I think there is only so much you can get from shadowing, cause you're basically watching and not doing anything), and actually getting to touch MY patients went a long way towards proving to me that I liked medicine.

That being said, I have a classmate who took the EMT class when I did, and he hated it. He got the highest score in the class when he took it, and is currently deciding between Penn and Tufts (I think) for med school. He didn't like the emergency (and dirty) aspect of EMS (and patient care), and I think he's planning on being a radiologist.

So, the point of my story is this: an EMT class can help you learn/reinforce why you want to do medicine. It might help a tiny bit on your app (it helped on my USUHS interview, but no where else that I noticed). What it will help with is you will have "played" with patients before, and you'll know how to use a stethoscope and a BP cuff.

Dan, if JH accepts you are you planning on attending and still pursuing a medical corps commission via HPSP, or would you then pursue a civilian residency and academic career? An acceptance from JH sounds very attractive, but USU still would seem to be the better option if your career interests lie with the Navy. What does your wife think about the USU as opposed to JH as an USU alumni?

Ahhh yes. This is the question that is at the very heart of my dilemma.

Based on my time in service (almost 11 years by the time I start med school), I am inclined to pursue a career in Navy medicine either way. As you already pointed out, USUHS is the better option for me in that regard.

However, if I end up going to Hopkins, it will be primarily due to the following reasons:

(1) I really like the way the curriculum is set up at Hopkins. The preclinical years are on the block system, which allows you to narrow your focus for short, intense periods of time (rather than having to balance several courses at once), which definitely favors my learning style.

(2) The preclinical years end in March of 2nd year, which allows for significant flexibility in scheduling your core and elective clerkships, and therefore provides you with the ability to really test yourself in your desired specialty before having to participate in the residency match.

(3) The diversity of experiences with patients - nothing more to be said here.

(4) I would only be practicing medicine in the military for 6 - 7 years beyond residency, so it would be a great opportunity to establish contacts outside of the military.

This has been a very difficult decision-making process for me. My wife and I were married while she was a student at USUHS, so I have a strong appreciation for the school. On the other hand, I have the above factors that are pulling me towards Hopkins. We will see what happens!

Has anyone who interviewed in Jan heard anything yet? I've been calling them every week to check on my status...can't wait any longer  ...please send me some 😍

I also interviewed on Jan 4. I got my letter yesterday.. waitlist 🙁 . But the letter was dated Feb 28, so I guess it is taking them a while to send them out. I have already been accepted to my state school but I think I would rather be at USUHS so I guess I will have to just wait it out and see how much movement there is on the waitlist.

Is it correct to assume that all decisions mailed out from here on out are going to be waitlist, at best? -- until people start giving up spots for other schools, anyway.

I don't recall seeing anywhere in SDN anyone receiving a rejection from USUHS.

I'm hoping this movement off the waitlist is going to start happening soon. Do financial aid decisions get delivered at a specific designated time for civilian schools? or is it scattered? That's probably when people will be ready to give up spots their holding.

Also extremely anxious to hear.... I have a few more weeks to wait. I interviewed Feb 1st.

what part of the country are you in ? I didn't receive any letter from them yesterday...haven't check my mail today yet....maybe it takes longer to reach California??? I called them way after Feb 28 but they kept saying no decision has been made on my file. hm....

i also saw someone inter 1/10 got his waitlist letter 2...

anyway...i'm sorry about your waitlist...but don't lose hope...get those physical exams out of the way and hope good news will come soon!!!

I am in Louisiana. I've already been medically qualified and all that good stuff. So for me its the waiting game. Then comes the final decision. Good luck to everyone.

which branch did you choose? don't mind if i ask 🙂

no mail for me today though..still anxiously waiting

i dont know if anyone gets outright rejected - instead put on alternate list vs. waitlist.

Just FYI, I know the Dept. of Military and Emergency Medicine has a copy of a Fox News report on Operation Bushmaster/Kerkeshner. It is pretty cool to see, but also doesn't add anything (except for some awesome moulage). If you e-mail them they can mail it to you.

Hey all, new member here. I have been reading these posts about waiting for news from USUHS and I couldnt but help do a little venting myself. I see some of you have really waited, but this is driving me crazy, I also interviewed in Jan (albeit late) and am hoping to hear something soon.

I have been in contact with OSA and have given my information to April Broussard, who is in charge of coordinating roommate searches for us.

If anyone wants to submit their names or needs roommates, her email is [email protected]. She can then give you the information of those students who are also looking for roomies.

I put my name and info there 🙂 - I have found a great 2 bed/ 2 bath place only 2 miles away for ~$1000 per person.

Good luck to everyone still waiting or waitlisted - hope to see you all in August.

nothing in the mail yet ...i'm not dare to call them anymore...i'm afraid if i bug them to much they will give me a straight rejection 🙁..... anyway,i don't hold my hope so high up right now...

anyone else inerviewed on Jan 4th receive their letter ???

While waiting, I did everything I could to move things along that was within my control. So I scheduled the earliest physicals possible and got that out of the way. The status on the Concord website just changed to "Closed" on 3/13/2007. I'm really hoping "closed" means that I passed and am physically qualified.

I'm healthy, and typically I'd have no concerns over this. I just want to make sure there are no factors in the way of an acceptance to USUHS. I also don't trust the exam that was performed on me. Specifically the hearing test. I'm convinced the machine was broken. First of all, I was sent to a really sketchy clinic in a pretty scary neighborhood -- I'm talking Compton. The house the clinic was in was pretty dilapidated. Yes, it was a house, more like a shack. The machine the nurse used to test my hearing wasn't working properly. It took her testing one ear to realize it, and to fix the machine, she basically picked up the box and shook it, then cycled all the switches and knobs. I asked for her to re-test and check out the machine again after the test. The conversation from the waiting room was loud and clear through 3 doors and my headset, so it was a struggle to listen for the beeps through the noise. Hopefully, it was really fixed when she was actually testing my hearing. I really don't want to petition for a waiver if the results disqualifies me. I was also bothered by the height measurement. I haven't been measured less than 5'2" or 5'3" since the age of 12. She insisted that I was 5'1" Again, not a big deal, but it contributed to my uneasy feelings about the whole examination.

Has anyone ever received the "Closed" status and then subsequently been informed they were disqualified? For those who are already in and have completed everything, were you informed of a positive passed examination? Or is silence a good indicator.

I was really surprised at how superficial the exam was. I was expecting a more thorough exam for what I thought would be a higher standard in the military. Anyone else surprised?

don't worry! I was sent to a pretty run-down place as well - but it sounds like yours was worse than mine! i think i started faking the beeps on the hearing test because you could anticipate the pattern!

when mine was changed to "closed" i was worried but i was unconditionally accepted so I think "closed" means your file is closed at DODMERB because everything checked out. silence IS a good indicator.

also, i remember hearing that we have to do blood tests and a whole other set of tests once we get to OIS/OBC/OTC.

I found out I was qualified by checking my status at this DoDMERB website:
https://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil/applicant/ssnsearch.asp

Have you tried using this before? The Concorde website was never really very useful.

Since i had to do the physicals run around- i have found out a lot of info:

1) closed means they have all your info- but not necessarily that you are deemed 100% healthy.
- i was sent remedials to get a blood test b/c i was out of range 1x 4 years ago and it was on the medical records.
-but closed is a good thing- you will get a letter in the mail if you are 100%
and an email from michelle if you need remedials b/c they want you to schedule them asap.

2) if you are really wondering about your status give them a call... the dodmerb people are actually really nice, and pretty accomodating. they allowed me to change my site b/c it was closer to my work.

any questions PM me, i'm prob bored at work 🙁

I need to get a blood test 2..similar reason. but i thought we will all get remedials since they request our entire medical record to be turned in. is that right?? not quite sure. but jp7, you should check the DoDMERB website instead of the original Concorde one.

ah, i just called the admission again. They said my file is still on hold and it needs to be reviewed one more time before making final decision. Is that good or bad? any thought?

Operator, Bubblehead, MeMoMa, and LovableDr,

Thanks for all your responses! I just checked the DoDMERB sight and it states "DoDMERB has not recieved your medical examination. Please check back in a few days." I'll find out soon enough...

I'm really hoping to join you all in the Class of 2011 this fall.

Bubblehead, any word from JH?

jp7

not everyone gets remedials- they are for if there is something questionable in your med records... like if you have bad hearing/failed the hearing exam they would send you to another dr, for me i had a level out of range in my bloodwork, so i had to get NEW bloodwork. They just want to clear us 100%

what i found suprising is that they didnt drug test us... i thought that was standard.

As for getting your records- i was told it can take up to 30 days, but you can get accepted without all your medical stuff being taken care of... you will just be conditional.

You'll get a drug test day one of OIS/OBC/etc.... and pretty much every few months while you are on active duty - unless you are a girl and it is harder to find a "monitor" - but then I was on ships and it was harder to find another woman to watch us pee.... kinda funny in the end. I must have been the official pee monitor 5 or 6 times!! Lucky me (sarcasm).

So unless a catastrophe strikes- I too will be USUHS class of 2011. I'm still waiting on my final waiver - but it was recommended from USUHS and DoDMERB doesn't usually overturn them (so I've been told).

Couple of quick notes:
Married, to soon to be retired Marine infanty officer
3 children ages 6 months to 7 yrs
From Texas - went to UT Austin as ChemE (WAY back in the day....)
Former Navy nuke - carriers
Spent the last 3 years as a stay-at-home mom....

That's about it...

We were up in DC last week looking for houses and experienced the snow in March... CRAZY!!!

And for those of you counting down - the Marine Corps marathon registration for Marine Corps Marathon starts on May 9th. Register early because it fills up!!! 🙂 Yes, I'm a little nuts - but seriously- this is a good race and it'll give you something to do during study breaks!

Thanks for asking! I am not expecting to receive notification from them until the first week of April, so I still have some time.

My wife and I are doing some househunting this weekend up in the DC area. We'll see if we find something we really like! Who knows, we may end up eliminating all but USUHS by virtue of where we decide to live!

what do you think the breakdown of traditional students vs. nontraditional students is for USUHS - i am guessing a little more nontraditional than the national average?

I feel like I am the minority here on SDN - I am traditional-straight-out-of-college.

I think you will find that USUHS does have a higher percentage of non-trads than other med schools. However, with a decent class size of ~165 students, there will still be plenty of young, single, traditional med students to socialize with - YOU WILL NOT BE IN A CLASS FULL OF MED STUDENTS THAT ARE MARRIED WITH KIDS!!! I promise! 😉

I hope everyone's house hunting is going well. If you want a second opinion about an area, or the truth about how long it really takes to drive in from Germantown, or worse Fredricksburg! Feel free to message me.

My husband and I spent a good chunk of the fall looking at all the options locally before settling on a house in Kensington. Which I would highly reccomend to RunningMom... the local running club meets for long weekend runs a two minute jog away, and there are parks every few blocks. With baby due in the next few weeks, I want to be back on the trail as soon as possible, and that is much easier when the outside beckons with green trees and quiet pathways. Plus its 10-15 min to downtown bethesda and the base in peak traffic!

Then again Operator you may want to look for an area with a little more nightlife. We had alot of fun in Silver Spring. Its cheaper then Bethesda, closer to DC then Rockville, and has developped as fun little international scene. And you can jump on the J4 or J1 bus and be over in Bethesda for less then a cup of joe. vbmenu_register("postmenu_4903493", true);

Medicaly waiver was finally approved! See you guys in the fall! Any Eagles fans out there? First order of business is installing Sunday ticket or finding a bar not swarming with 'Skins fans. Good luck to everyone still waiting decisions of some sort.

Oohhh!!! Do tell!! We ended up buying a place just in that area - we back to Rock Creek park on the west side of the park. Our address is technically Rockville, but it isn't in the city limit - 4.6 miles from school if I go Connecticut or a little longer (but less traffic) if I use Beach Dr. through the park. Do you have a website for the running club? Where do they meet?

Hey RunningMom, or any other footpath lovers,
This is the Montgomery Country Road Runners Club site

The Saturday bike path runs go from Ken-Gar in Rock Creek Park (on Beach Drive near the intersection at Strathmore/Knowles Ave in Kensington).

anyone knows what the "hold" status really mean??? Is it becuz they can't reject anyone yet so they want to go through all files first and let me wait longer for the rejection letter??? can someone please helppppp??😕

This club sounds like a lot of fun! The Monday and Tuesday (track) runs are pretty close to where I will be living!

I was up in Bethesda looking at places, and I managed to narrow down the areas that I would like to live, specifically Old Georgetown Village and Tuckerman Station. They are within 5 miles of the school, and have townhomes that are For Rent (I found 4 that were around 2500 and were 3 or 4 bedrooms). I know that I will be attending USUHS c/o 2011, and I would like to move in before OIS, et al.

Is there anybody else that is interested in trying to find a place with me? Send me a PM, and hopefully we can figure this out!

Hey Asher2011,

Grew up in Pensacola, went to school in Gainesville...Gotta love 'em Gators!!

Is that how it typically works for an incoming USUHS student, moving into Bethesda prior to going to OBC/OIS/COT? I'm going to COT in July and I'm not sure of the best way to plan when to move to Bethesda from S.W. PA. I think it would be best to move in prior to going to COT but then I would be in AL for a whole month anyway...

What do you guys think?

PS. I'm looking for a roomate (or several) as well so long as our apt/townhouse is close to Metro or USUHS. 🙂

subway5c,

i can't speak for anyone else but I am trying to figure out my housing situation prior to officer training. however, i don't plan on physically moving until after OIS (I am single with no family and I don't need a house).

unfortunately, it's kind of hard to know if i want a 2-bed, 2-bath apartment when i don't know if i will have a roommate. i am proceeding under the assumption that i will find a roommate...

like i said a few posts ago, i found a great place (not the ultimate deal) - it is brand new, 2 miles from campus, and 500 feet from a metro station. it would be ~1500 if i don't have a roommate and ~1000 per person if i did have a roommate.

I submitted my name, info, and housing desires to April Broussard at OSA - she coordinates roommate matching for incoming students - she told me I was the first one from our class to submit any info...(I posted about this a while ago also).

alternatively, i believe my student sponsor said he didn't make housing arrangements until after officer training - but i like to have things planned out ahead of time.....

hope my opinion helps...

Ok, after starting this thread back in the dark ages of 2006, and after interviewing in September(!) I finally got my unconditional! Just had to get that out there. Anyways, I don't know if this applies to anyone else, but I am moving from my undergrad house to USUHS, and in the interest of not paying any more rent than is necessary, I was hoping to move in July (my other lease is up in August). Buuuut, then there is COT to worry about (Go AF- anyone else see the academy NIT men's game the other night?!) Soooo, the point of this long-winded explanation is that my parents have kindly agreed to let me give them power of attorney for moving and volunteered to drive down and watch the military-scheduled movers pick up my stuff, then follow them to Bethesda and watch them move it in for me. That way, when I come back from COT, I don't have to worry about moving everything AND unpacking in the 10 short days before check in starts. Don't know if that will help anyone else, but my parents are both retired AF and seem to think that it is the best option if you can swing it!

Congrats!!

Hate to sound like the proverbial broken record, but has anybody heard from security about starting the EQIP yet?

Asher,

I spoke to the security office a few days ago because I was getting antsy since I hadn't heard anything after getting the unconditional acceptance. The security office told me that EQIP was a system they were testing and that I may not even need to fill it out. They said that the SF86 (or whatever we filled out) might be good enough - Depending on if there was anything that raised flags on your file...

They told me that I would be contacted if they needed any additional information but if I got worried I could call back again in MAY - they stressed May because they said they were still going through files.

Hope this helps....

Congrats on the unconditional Kristen! See you at COT!

Thanks everyone for the replies about when to move... I think it is probably a good idea to get things arranged ahead of time (prior to COT) as well. I've been looking online and through the USU SSC housing listing and there are some really awesome places around USUHS! I'm hoping to get down to Bethesda right after graduation in May to check out a few places.

Any other AF people here that will be going to COT in July?

I have a friend down there in German Town who may be letting me take over his lease ona beautiful town house. I am still trying to figure out when the best time to move would be. Should I get everything scheduled so the movers can pick up our stuff right after OBC or should I have my wife just supervise the move while I am at OBC? She would much rather not have to deal with all that crap but it may be the best way to go.

As a side note, does anyone know where I can get a backup copy of my SF86 (security form). I seemed to have misplaced my orginal backup and am wondering if USUHS can send me a copy for future use.

Well, I pretty much knew this would be the case, but I found out today I am waitlisted...🙁 Sorry just have to feel a littl sorry for myself to somebody today.

I waited to find out I have more waiting to do. I tried to finagle out of the admissions person how many people are on the waitlist, but all she would/could say was that, "it was not that many people" and that being on the waitlist was better then being on the alternate list. So I guess it could be worse...
