***Official where should Pickles matriculate thread***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Someone on pre-allo just posted a map with with ratio of single women to men in a particular regions of the country and asked if anyone is using this as a selection criterion.

I can only imagine the OP was joking....however, I've added this piece of data to my pro/con list just for discussion's sake. 😀

Are your pros and cons weighted?

If not, it looks like Michigan is the clear winner...

(p.s. thanks for the props in pre-allo!)

I'm curious, how did you find this out?

They really advertised their rankings at the interview (MD portion). The director of MD admissions said they are ranked #5 by residency directors. I tried to find a list of residency director rankings but wasn't successful.

Too bad. That list would be HOTTT👍! Hey Pickles, why don't you call Ann Arbor and ask for the list for all us indecisive types? ;-)

USNews does this as a part of their research rankings. I don't remember UMich ever scoring particularly highly (i.e. higher than their overall rank). Anyone have a recent ranking handy? I have some old ones at home if anyone cares.

From the 2008 Edition, they have "Assessment score by residency directors" on a five point scale.

In this category, the list is:
1) Harvard (4.7)
1) Hopkins (4.7)
3)Duke (4.6)
3) Stanford (4.6)
5) Wash U (4.5)
6) UPenn (4.4)
6) UCSF (4.4)
6) Michigan (4.4)
9) Yale (4.3)
9) Cornell (4.3)
9) Coulmbia (4.3)

NYU is a 3.6

How much you want to count that, who knows.

Tied for 6th in the residency directors opinion survey, but #11 in the research rankings. So, since it sounds better than being 11th, somehow they try to sell you that them being 6th in that statistic is important somehow. It never ceases to amaze me what numbers ****** medical schools can be, as much as people (including medical schools) like to complain about USNews Rankings.

I bring this up because I remember them saying something like this back when I interviewed there, so this is not at all a new or one-time thing.

Michigan still says that - not only about the residency director rating but also the research rating. Never heard the phase "top 10" so many times in a single presentation before 😀

And they have so much fabulous propaganda. I've never received so much email from one person, let alone one school before.

:hijacked: So my father asked me what I wanted for graduation, and I couldn't think of anything, so I said "Well, those Nintendo Wii's are really cool." I was joking, they're super expensive. But today he calls me back and asks if I was serious, because it was either a Wii or a really nice engraved watch. Well - I lose watches... Do you think that's a silly graduation gift. I really couldn't think of anything else.

Hell no! Get the Wii! My dad got me one too, for getting into med school haha

And Wiis are $250, so not terribly expensive...about the price of 4 secondaries...

Hmm - I must have missed out on those "getting into med school" gifts 🙂

My parents have one - it is pretty cool. Unfortunately my television is smaller than my computer screen... But I don't plan to get a new one until I move. Wherever that is.

The U.S. News residency rankings are also based on a survey with a 25% response rate. Response bias? You betcha.

So Pickles, make any new headway in your decision? Or are you still too freaked out about your thesis? 😉
