Oh Come On

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know what you were up to. I also understand a guy with your education knows the place of plankton in the food chain.
😉

They're at the top right?

Sort of like some of the med students and residents here! 🙄

Well I guess it was an April Fools Joke.

So WTF is going on mods. Is this all a joke to you guys?

They pulled the plug early.

My two cents, for my 9 years on SDN, I've come to think that the April Fool's pranks are borderline poorly thought out and executed here. Compound that with actual site changes on 1 April, and you engender confusion and resentment. (For example, the integration of the All-Students forum into the Lounge - which seemed to be the epitome of an April Fool's joke - occurred on 1 April, and was legitimate, and badly timed.)

The AS Forum was merged with the Lounge in March of last year. Not on AFD. Other than that factual nugget, I'd agree that it's possible that our volunteer staff might not come up with the most professional, high production value AFD pranks. But some of them have been pretty darn funny.

At the end of March. Close enough that it was not clear that it wasn't an April Fool's Day joke.

As for "some of them have been pretty darn funny", de gustibus non est disputandem. Or, "there's no accounting for taste". When only one side finds it hilarious, but at the expense of the other, a reasonable observer would have to consider that the prank was hateful, poorly conceived, or just not "nice".

A jug of water over your head while walking in, in a t-shirt or a swimsuit, can be funny. A jug of grape juice, when you are in your business clothes, is not.

I am not sure what hateful pranks you are referring to. The dancing hamsters last year must have really scarred some people, I guess.

I don't think you even did it intentionally, but your response is the prototypical SDN mod staff answer: "I am not sure to what you are referring". Alternately, "I don't understand what it is you find problematic". "What you say doesn't make sense to me."

Maybe I am just conflating years of sundry and various events.

Prototypical or not, it's the truth. I don't know what hateful pranks you are referring to. Please feel free to post them or PM me.

OK so the April Fools part of the prank is over. My apologies if anyone was offended or if anyone thought that it was a dumb stunt. We were just trying to have some funsies and lighten up the mood around here.

I was going to post in the other thread titled “Is everyone Happy?” but instead I will do it here and address a few issues that have been brought up and to make a few comments. As always, comments are welcome.

So now we want to censor the med students!

There is no censoring here. This is the most lightly moderated forum on SDN because the users want it that way.

And this isn't North Korea either. If you want censorship of everything said and you want a supreme ruler then thats where this place is headed.

See above.

If it's outside mods or admins, our mods need to assert themselves and complain when they get involved in our affairs.
We don't have to all get along.

Admin is very in tune with this forum and gives the area mods full discretion in all matters.

It seems obvious to me that the more experienced members of this forum are mostly in agreement that this moderation is not what we want. The youngsters with much less experience are mixed. Some still don't like having their words challenged. The mods, well they remain silent.

We are not silent, we just don’t see the point in saying the same thing over and over.

We are going to have to agree to disagree over the interpretation of moderation style.

Arch you have been level headed in the past, what gives man?

I like to think that I still am.

I'm starting to think the mods are foolin around.

We were.

Did Plankton get banned, too?

No, and I am glad that he has been seen around here lately because he is a great contributor to the forum.

Well you can't say this forum is boring any more. And if you did, you'd probably get banned.

Doubtful. Recent threads have been sprinkled with plenty of complaints.

Well I guess it was an April Fools Joke. So WTF is going on mods. Is this all a joke to you guys?

We were just playing a little prank.

I've tried to participate in this forum for a couple weeks now and I gotta say that this is the lowest point this forum has ever seen. People are asking for stories to be posted, no offense to the OP but the latest post was asking for airway stories. This is the most boring time this forum has ever seen.
Nice work Mods!

There was a blowup a couple of years ago that easily rivals this one.

The bottom line is that outside of the lounge, this forum is by far the least moderated and "censored" forum on SDN. I think there has been one longtime user banned in the last two years since I became a moderator, and just take my word for it when I tell you it was a long, long time coming with multiple warnings, PMs, gentle public in-thread nudgings, a post-hold, and plenty of discussion amongst a dozen+ moderators and admins before he was ultimately banned. And even now, I'm only about 90% sure that banning him was the right thing to do.

Like I've said here before, I think the less we as moderators do the better - but that doesn't mean we can always do NOTHING.

What he said.

I'd be happy if people would stop starting new threads to say how much this forum sucks.

Amen.

Thanks for yur comment but me being a mod is the last thing they want. Plus the mods here are not given the full moderation access that the other mods receive therefore they are just tools for the admin to use and are expendable.

False.

Thanks for the participation. Your assistance is second to none. 😉 Look, I know you are not the instigator here but you are the elder mod.

None of the staff are instigators and if they are, they are liable (and have been) removed from staff.

------

As usual, “no comment” on the particulars of the 2 recent “post-holds”. I would be violating the SDN privacy policy that I agreed to abide by.

Read and reread the sticky at the top of the forum from Lee.

These sort of blowups happen periodically in this forum. This is nothing new. How much to enforce the TOS is perpetually an issue. After the last blowup a couple of years ago, staff felt the need to enforce the TOS more stringently. Recent events are not about bringing this forum in line with the moderation on the rest of the site. It is more complicated that a simple TOS violation. I know this answer won’t everyone, but it’s about all I am willing to say publicly.

Hardly anyone is ever banned or post-held in this forum (troll nurses aside). Nothing is ever deleted unless it is porn, spam, etc or something egregious like posting a user’s personal information or attempting to “out” someone. All comments in this forum are reviewable by searching through threads. We are not hiding a single thing.

There have been a few bans of regular users along the way, but in every single case, without exception, a long and tedious process was followed prior to the official act. And then, sometimes we can’t be sure we did the right thing.

The Anesthesiology forum is by far the most leniently moderated forum on this site despite repeated attempts to bring it in line with the rest of SDN and make enforcement equal across the board. Most of us on the board are med studs, residents, fellows or attendings. The further you get along, the less tolerance you generally have for strict moderation, particularly with the personalities that abound in this forum. All 3 of the area mods understand this because we have all been on the board for a good while now and are all attending physicians ourselves.

Every post that is reported is reviewed by staff. Usually all of the forum area mods give input. Sometimes admin, sometimes other staff who read the forums. The ultimate decision comes down to the area mods whatever the matter. The 3 area mods have the final say on 100% of the matters here. Despite the claims otherwise, we are not “tools” of the admin. Every single administrator on this site was vetted by Lee (the dude who started this whole site back in 1998 or so). They are all extensions of him, and I can assure you that he is the most reasonable guy around. Every administrator is very reasonable in their approach to matters of this sort, because they have all dealt with not-easy issues many times before.

Nobody is going to be happy with what we decide 100% of the time. That’s life I guess. We do the best we can.

Peace.

Is it a requirement for mods to (over)use that quote from "Stripes"?

I honestly don't know if anybody can ever overuse any quote from Stripes. I love that movie...

Arch - are you SURE that d712s post hold wasn't because he said something negative about Kentucky's basketball program? 😀

pgg - I started to put that quote in, but I'm pretty sure I've used it on this site before... but it's still one of my favorites from that movie.

I effin' HATE Kentucky basketball (all of their sports, really), so I know that wasn't the reason.
