Ohio Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I doubt the administration would be publicizing specifics if this was not already a done deal. The specific numbers I have heard (from high-level administrators) are 20-22 more seats.

I don't think it's an ideal solution, and I can almost guarantee it was not the first idea to pop into anyone's head, but the fact of the matter is that state support is estimated to drop another ~10% next year. The moral of the story: people need to be writing to legislators and asking them to increase funding for higher education. This is not a sustainable system for veterinary medical education.

(Does this count as a hijack yet?)

I keep hearing about there being a shortage of vets (particularly large animal vets); so maybe admitting more students is a good thing?

Then, when I went to take my exam up, she asked when I was interviewing. I told her, and she said that so far they are interviewing 306 applicants. She said she saw some empty slots on the interview sheets, and that they want to interview 350 total this year. So guys, if you haven't received a rejection yet, there is still hope! She also said that they out of state applicant pool is VERY strong this year, and that the in state applicant pool is "a little soft." So if there's any other in staters on here, that kind of gives us the opportunity to really, really shine in our interviews to set us apart from what is otherwise a relatively mediocre applicant pool.

Wow, thanks for the info. 350 interviews is down considerably from two years ago which was 465. I wonder if there were fewer applicants this year.

So, am I right that getting an interview it is based purely on quantitative aspects of your app? And the interview is open file, yes?

350 is even down from last year, when they interviewed 365. There may have been fewer applicants this year, but like I said, supposedly the in-state pool leaves a bit to be desired so perhaps they just took fewer in-staters this year.

As for your first question, I'm not totally sure. Adcomm members often refer to "getting past the computers" so I have a feeling that the computers do sort out people based on factors like GPA and GRE. However, I'd also guess that those are still checked through for exceptions, i.e. the person with a 4.0 who has a terrible review from a LOR writer and can't write an essay to save their life, or the person with a 2.8 who has amazing experiences, references, and essays. That sort of thing.

Yes, it is absolutely open file. Make sure you know everything that was on your application, including time frames, hours spent doing things, etc. Also know your answers to your supplemental questions in case those come up.

1. will you make a good veterinary student (can u handle the academic aspect).. this means if you show up really nervous, they will say "oh you're nervous now? just wait till you get to the finals, etc... NEXT"

I would say this is probably only true (that they'll pass on you if you're nervous) if you are CRIPPLED with anxiety during the interview and are flustered and can't answer their questions. These people KNOW you are nervous, even if you may not appear to be. They expect you to be, and they are going to give you a free pass on it, provided you are able to get through the interview. I believe on girl in our class cried during her interview, but she still got in. So for those of you who are getting nervous about getting nervous, it'll be okay! I promise!

So, am I right that getting an interview it is based purely on quantitative aspects of your app? And the interview is open file, yes?

I believe this is correct. Multiple schools would tell us before the interviews that if you are there, you've already passed the first round. Once you get the interview, they don't really care about your GPA or GRE scores. Now they want to see who you are in person, as opposed to on paper.

And yes, I believe it is open file. At least, when I interviewed, they had mine sitting on the table. But you already know everything that's in that folder, so just focus on being a human being in there.

Try to look forward to your interview day. The CVM is a really beautiful campus, and the whole day can be a lot of fun. And definitely take advantage of the student panel to ask the questions you don't want to ask the administration.

Getting an interview at OSU is based 100% on science GPA, cumulative GPA, last 45 GPA and GRE score. They do not look at the rest of your application unless you score high enough in those categories. Once your invited to interview they review your entire application and at that point everything is fair game

Ironically, I take this as slightly bad news, as I didn't feel 100% confident about my supplemental essays when I submitted them. I was hoping they had already read them and thought they were at least decent! Sigh.

I also don't take the fact that the OOS pool is extra strong this year as good news. Sigh again. Unless it is ME making the pool strong 😀?

In other news, I am getting really excited for my little Ohio adventure! I am even almost convincing myself that the interview will go great since really, who knows more about me than me? Plus I have been so crazy busy trying to get all my ducks in a row at work so I can leave my students just days before their final exam without too much of a mess, that I haven't had much time to worry this week!

Now... can anyone tell me how best to avoid bringing bedbugs home with me from the hotel? I've got the heebie jeebies from that comment a few pages ago:scared:.

OMG!!!

I just made yet another one of my obsessive checks of the applicant status page at OSU and saw that they had my work phone listed as my home/ preferred phone number. How I didn't notice this sooner is beyond me.

I just changed it to my cell but am wondering should I be worried??? My work number is a 'public' department number and it's a crap shoot who picks up... I suppose I should call them tomorrow and let them know the change; but I really hope I'm currently freaking out over nothing. :scared:

Good luck!

Bed bugs- best advice I have for you is to check your room before you bring anything in the hotel room. Don't know if you know what bed bugs look like, but pull back the covers/sheets and check for them. I've heard some of the people I work with at local health depts tell me that you also should check (if you can) behind where the headboard is. It's a great hiding place for them. In the event that you do find any remnants of bed bugs, I would request another room (or if that's still unsettling... try a different hotel...)

Sorry for freaking you out... just don't want you returning home with more than you've bargained for (especially since I hear those things are a nightmare to get rid of)....

Hey G2D - looks like we were posting at the same time. Anyway, this is what I've been told about keeping the bed bugs away (my home city has them too). :scared:

1. Phone your hotel in advance (or check their website) to ensure that they change linens daily and sanitize the mattress and boxspring between clients. Rumor has it many major cities are apparently posting this info along with whether or not they've had reports of the little buggers.

2. Pack your clothes in a giant ziplock bag inside your suitcase to keep them out of your clothes. Get two so you have one for clean clothes and one for dirty clothes if need be.

2. When you get to your room, lift the bedspread, and mattress if need be, to check for a dark ring around the top of the boxspring - if you see one, leave!!

3. When you get home, unpack your clothes in the bathtub or even outside your house and then immediately toss them into the washer (or keep them sealed if they require dry cleaning).

Aside from that, I've heard about this stuff called Kleen Free. You might want to check it out if you're really :scared:.

:xf::xf: Good luck!! :xf::xf:

Thanks guys! I will definitely look for them, and bring the big ziplocs! It is a Holiday Inn, so I am hoping they are reputable enough to thoroughly clean, but still...

my adviser's point wasn't that if you are a little nervous you are out of the game, but that if you sit there like you are being interrogated, freaking out, and not smiling and at least attempting to have a pleasant conversation, they will notice. Just saying, that is how he grades his interviewees. it is not to say you must be 100% calm because no one will be, but remember to breathe and smile. He told me one girl broke down after the second question because she didn't know the answer, and she cried her way through the rest of the interview. You need to be able to check your emotions a little bit.

The first time I interviewed (gosh.. 3 years ago!) I was terrified. When I didnt get in and i did the exit interview, I was told my file indicated that I looked like they could break me in half! I looked scared and fragile and they thought vetschool would break me. The second time I interviewed I knew that, so I was a lot calmer and composed, and the exit interview just told me I simply didnt make the cut, it wasn't because of me being scared or anything, it just was a tough year and I didnt make it.

And for bedbugs, just keep your luggage in the bathtub, and keep your pj's you sleep in separately in a ziplock bag once you used them 🙂

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!! I JUST GOT THE CALL!!!! INTERVIEWING WED DEC. 15th!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHH😀

YAY!!!! :woot:

I'm still holding out a small bit of hope - I called this morning to ensure that nothing went awry with my work phone being listed as preferred... Then, I brought up that I was of the understanding that they had a 'holding bin' and I figured I was a part of it. The person I spoke with took a long pause and then said 'yeaaaah'...

I think my interview is in the morning.. but maybe we can arrange a meeting!

well at least you get to get it over and done with early in the day! =) Mine is at 3:15...not too excited about that but I can't complain!

and yeah I don't know how the whole process goes, this is my first time applying and my first ever interview but yeah maybe our groups meet for lunch or something...so who knows! =)

SO EXCITED!

This is my second time applying, first ever interview! I think the groups have separate lunch times actually.. good luck though!!! I feel like I don't have enough time to prepare, I have two more exams this week and then I work all weekend.

LMMS, I'm tottally with you! I keep checking my phone like mad to see if they've called...Keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of us in the "holding bin". I guess it's better than a flat out rejection, right?

Congrats LMD!! I am hoping more of you get a call like this!

Just picked up my suit from the tailor (nothing like last minute alterations!), so all that is left now is dropping my dogs off at their sitters and packing! Oh, and I guess obsessively check SDN a bit too.

Hey guys, I hope everyone is SUPER EXCITED for interviews!

We have our last final tomorrow morning (cell bio) and then we are DONE with our first round of finals!!!! 😀😀😀

Have a blast at your interviews! Stay cool and calm and know that if you made it this far in the process only you can hold yourself back, so ROCK the interviews!

Good luck, and def ask current students questions, thats why we are there! 😀

I would like to say that I am so glad that I am staying with a friend in Columbus and don't have to deal with this bed bug business. That would totally freak me out, I've never been to a city with a bed bug epidemic.
I did watch a show about a couple that trained their dog to sniff out bed bugs and started a business with it.

Hey guys, I hope everyone is SUPER EXCITED for interviews!

Oh yes, I'm very excited: :barf:

No really I am, but it would be soooo much easier if this wasn't so important to me. You know? 😉

🙁 I didn't mean to make you guys feel more nervous. I thought it would help. When he said to "beat the shy out of yourself," he extrapolated saying that you somehow need to mentally get past your shyness before you get into that room. He said if you go into the room shy, you'll eventually get comfortable, but by that time it will be too late because your interview will be nearly over.

I know you guys are going to do awesome.

I just read this post. I really do appreciate your post, don't get me wrong. 😀

I HAVE AN INTERVIEW!!!! I'm still trying to process this. I don't know how it happened but am soooo excited!

CONGRATS!!!!! I'm so glad that all our "don't give up hope" comments worked for a good amount of people!! =)

YAY PENNY!!!!!!!!!!!!😀 congrats!!!!

On a side note.. for those of you that received an invite via phone ccall.. are we supposed to call then back and tell them that we received the confirmation email? I have to admit when I was on the phone the only thing I could think was OMGOMGOMG.. so I can't remember if she told me to call her back or not? Thanksss

I HAVE AN INTERVIEW!!!! I'm still trying to process this. I don't know how it happened but am soooo excited!

Yes!!! How awesome penny, you totally deserve it! Now rock it out!

To those of you who have interviews tomorrow...GOOD LUCK! And please come back right away and tell us how it went! We'll all be eagerly waiting 😀

Everyone that's still waiting- don't give up hope. The girl that called me apologized if I had received my rejection letter already... I'm still in shock.

I don't know how I should feel right now. I see all of you freaking out (and I'll admit, three years ago, I was TERRIFIED!).... but right now I'm more determined than anything. I have busted my arse to get to this point since rejection #1 came a few years back and now I'm ready. I'm determined, I'm confident.... I don't know.... I just love the fact that this morning, upon getting the call, my boyfriend looked at me and told me that the glow in my eyes is back. I know these past few weeks has been rough emotionally for me to take, I'm just thankful that somehow, some way I'm given a chance to truly show that I can do this. It's all on me now and I'm not about to screw this up now.

Good luck everyone! :luck:

I feel EXACTLY the same way! I'm more excited than anything.. goodluck!!!

YAY, Penny!!!

That's GREAT news!!!!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

LMMS, I'm tottally with you! I keep checking my phone like mad to see if they've called...

I hear that!! I actually had the morning off and ran a few errands... When I was at the post office I heard a 'buzzing' noise... You should have seen the looks I was getting as I dropped my things to the floor just to dig out my phone! Oh well! At least there's a reason for the psychosis, right? 😛

:xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf: For the rest of us.

As for the lucky ones - I know you're gonna kick some major keister in Columbus!! :luck:

Penny! I'm so happy for you! I'm so glad you got some good news, it sounds like you really deserved it! It's great to know there is still much hope to be had!

LMMS...uh...yeah I've been holding my phone for like, three days now. I'm starting to feel phantom vibrates if it's in my pocket, and I'm slowly going batty. *fingers crossed*

Congrats everyone! I'm so happy for you all!

Hello fellow SDN'ers,

I'm an Ohio resident and a first time poster here (just found out about this site the other day). Can someone tell me if they have begun IN STATE interviews yet? I apologize but I don't feel like paging through all of the threads. Thanks in advance and congrats to those that got invites.

Welcome!

Ohio State doesn't differentiate between in state and out of state interview days. They email you and you sign up for whichever date works best for you. That being said, interviews begin tomorrow. The dates this year are the 10th and 11th and the 13th through the 18th.

Thanks for the info. I just found out that my email (AOL) has been blocking all OSU emails... lol gotta laugh at this and try not get upset (deep breaths Tom deep breaths)

Update: I had to manually find the application status page. It says my app is still in review. I sent an email to April P. I guess I'll find out whether or not they sent me an invite first thing tomorrow morning.

In review is a good thing =) I have an interview and that's what mine says. Good idea to get that sorted out straight away. I've heard they have problems with AOL in that way a lot of times.

Welp, IF I did get an invite, hopefully it's not scheduled early tomorrow morning because I am about 3 hours away from Columbus.

You've heard of other people with AOL having problems with OSU emails? Weird.

I've not heard of other people specifically, I've just heard teachers and administrators at OSU warn us that we'd be better off using an email address that was not an @aol.com email address because there have been a lot of instances of AOL blocking @osu.edu emails. Perhaps you could open another account on a website that offers them for free so that you don't have to worry about that in the future.

If you got an invite through email you wouldn't have been scheduled at all. When you got the email it had a link in it and you went in and picked the date from the list of available dates and then when they emailed you to confirm they gave you a time. I'm sure they'll work something out if somehow your email didn't go through though. Good luck!

People still use AOL?

😆

carry on.....

haha, my douchebag landlord used AOL for his work address... and he's a lawyer 😱. I wasn't surprised when he showed up for petty court in the wrinkliest suit of all times. And his email address was [email protected] (substitute his last name for douchebag).

Is it completely crazy that I'm sitting here at work and willing my phone to ring with an interview at OSU? Can you picture a 32-year-old woman sitting in her cubby, squeezing her eyes shut and thinking, "They will call. They will call. They will ..." I feel like the Little Engine that Could.
