Ohio Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To those of you who still have to interview, the whole day really was great! The student ambassadors are AMAZING! Use them! Drill them with questions! I found out so much about OSU that really made me want to go there even more now.

I guess my interview went well. I didn't feel stellar coming out. My interviewers were both food animal people, and I'm definitely not (SA, maybe lab/exotics, but not food). I feel this made my clinical examples a little difficult, but I'm sure I'm over-analyzing. When I gave my husband a play-by-play, I realized that my answers were actually pretty good, even if I wasn't as eloquent as I would have liked.

Congrats to those of you getting phone calls, good luck to those yet to go, and AHHHHHH for the rest of us who lay in wait!

Congrats Jakesmom!!!!

But AHHHHHHH! I can't get phone calls during the day, so I checked my voicemail after work and had a message from OSU. She left two numbers... I tried both, but of course it was after 6 there so no answer. So my brain is going a mile a minute thinking there is no other reason but to accept me to call, but until I hear that, I am freaking out with anxiety and stress! What if there is something missing or something? And they wouldn't call to reject you, would they? I tried checking the admissions portal and it still says I am in review... Those of you who have gotten calls, did your status change?

You better believe I will be up and calling OSU at 8 am their time tomorrow! Until then, you can find me in the fetal position.
So exciting!!!!! I just check my app status in the portal to be 100% sure and mine still says "In Review" so they have NOT YET changed it to "accepted" (or whatever it is they change it to). I'm thinking that means really good news for you! They wouldn't call to reject you and I'm sure they would have noticed by now if you had something missing. Try to get some sleep tonight (yeah riiiight). Sending tons of good luck your way (although I'm sure you don't need it!). Let us know as soon as you find out!!!!!!!:xf:

I definitely had a panic attack a few days after receiving my acceptance call, thinking, "Oh my god, I was so excited and nervous, maybe I misheard them! Maybe they told me that I WASN'T accepted." I actually ended up calling them to double check. I can't say 100% for sure, but I don't know of ANYONE who received a "We're rejecting you" phone call. So if your phone rings, it's good news.

That being said, for those of you who have had/will have interviews soon, don't get discouraged if you don't hear from them as soon as some of the people who have posted here. I didn't hear until a week after my interview, and I know others who didn't hear until late January. Just because you don't get a call within a few days, it doesn't mean you aren't getting in.

I actually found out I was accepted without a phone call. I went to OSU for undergrad (IS) and about a 2-3 weeks after I interviewed I was checking buckeye link for something with my classes when under my application status it still said IN REVIEW and under that it said condition for admission (completing microbiology). Naturally, the next day I got the guts to call and ask them and they told me that I was accepted and they would have called me over a week later!!! In fact, my admissions page didn't even change from *in review* to *decision* until March. So don't let that cloud your mind. April told me that changing the status is one of the last things they do. So good luck to everyone who is interviewing!!!🙂

Not sure if anyone I met today is on here (I was at OSU from 2:30-4:00ish), if so it was really nice meeting some of you guys. Good luck to all, sending good vibes to all.

p.s. The interview was really personal and I actually enjoyed it! Just go in there knowing that you should be there and let it flow.

The message I received said "Hi this message is for Jakesmom. Jakesmom, this is Dr. Jennifer Brandt from the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. I was hoping I could speak with you briefly about your application. I can be reached at.....*I stopped listening at this point and hit redial*" If this is what your message sounded like, I would be feeling very excited right now!! I don't think they would bother to call you to give you a rejection or to tell you that your application is missing something. I got an email when they thought my application was missing something. If I was a betting woman, which I am, I would be superly (I know it's not a word) optimistic! Good luck!! And I won't even bother trying to tell you to get some rest because we all know that's not going to happen  Hope to hear the good news on here tomorrow!

I just managed to kill 2 hours at a meeting tonight, so now I only have 9 hours to go before I can call! Luckily I have to but up so damn early for my job that I won't even have to make a point of setting my alarm early to call. My message was from April, not a Dr., so that makes me a little more nervous that it isn't the good news I am hoping for. All she said was to call back. At least I am taking heart that they probably didn't call me to reject me!

Sweet dreams everyone... I'll be thinking of you as I lay awake in bed tonight😀.

Jakesmom, I am THRILLED for your acceptance! But G2D, now I'm on pins and needles waiting to hear what they have to say to you! :scared: :xf:

My fortune cookie says that "G2D will receive good news on 12-15".

If you saw my post in the interview invite thread on 11.22, you know that my fortune cookies are always right. 😀

My acceptance phone call was the woman who interviewed me. So don't worry too much! Only like 24 minutes until you can call!! (8 am right?)

G2D what's the news?!!? The suspense is killing me!!

Just smile and knock 'em dead Elliegirl! You got this. 😀

EllieGirl, I know it's the lamest advice someone can give, but it really it true: Just be yourself! The first question I was asked was "How has your experience as an industrial roofer prepared you for veterinary medicine?" I love to joke around and I thought it was a joke, so my:smack:******* said that if I can handle 150lb roll of roofing material, I can handle a Doberman! Turns out he wasn't entirely joking and rephrased the question because he was looking for an actual answer. I didn't get asked a single question related to my actual veterinary experiences. They were more concerned with learning about me. So JUST BE YOURSELF AND YOU'LL DO JUST FINE! I believe in you!!

G2D, I was accepted 2 days after my interview last year and my call was from April rather than either of my interviewers... so I wouldn't be too nervous about that!! Also sounds like a similar message to the one she left me (just to call back, no other details - I was on a plane when she called me). Good luck!!

I'll let you in on a secret- you shouldn't worry about it. Haha because I heard through a member of the adcom that there IS one interviewer that is pretty brutal, just in that he doesn't have a sense of humor and when you start getting comfortable you'll look over at him and he's not smiling. But that's just one interviewer, not a team of two, so even if you did get a scary one the other one is bound to be really nice. So just focus on that one =) But really, I think you'll be fine. I've heard nothing but good things, and I have faith that even if you did get a scary interviewer you'll rock it out!

Hey I'm new on here. I interviewed at OSU yesterday (11/14). He seemed content with my answers and didn't say much either way, but he never smiled or looked much of anything (very difficult to read)! I have been reading through some of the threads on here and they are really helpful! 🙂

Thanks guys...I'm trying to relax but it feels like all the blood has been drained from me and was replaced with adrenaline. My skin is crawling. I can't even think about food. I'm listening to old, cheesy inspirational songs.

World's Greatest by R Kelly, anyone?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we haven't heard the update from G2D because of her busy schedule, and not because it was bad news. Wondering about it as I make my preparations for my flight to C-bus tomorrow.

I don't know how I'm going to make it through work tomorrow. I'm sitting in my office right now and I am feeling my heart racing just thinking about the interview (not nerves- excitement).... I need a sedative....

Has anyone ever had a heart attack prior to their interview from the anticipation? I know I'm pretty healthy but seriously.... this is intense!

As for cheesy inspirational songs... yeah... not so much... I've been trying to calm down with some Jack Johnson.... I have a feeling I'll be in cheesy inspirational song mode tomorrow night on my drive to Columbus.... Might have to compile a playlist for the car....

Same. I'm hoping she had to work and will be on later

this one is totally on the top of the list. The problem is it gets me so pumped up that I feel like I'm going to jump out of my skin and there's no outlet for it! Gahhhh I wish my roommate would come home so I at least had someone to talk to!!

I know how you feel about the lack of an outlet (hence the SDN dependency).... I've relocated to a town where the only individuals I know are friends/relatives of my SO.... and my co-workers have NO CLUE that I'm even applying to vet school this year (how I've been able to be tight-lipped about this all... I don't know). For 8 hours of my day I am forced to put a cap on my emotions and act like life is going along as usual.... *sigh* Can't wait to spill the beans but won't do so for a while even if I'm accepted...

So... has anyone who has interviewed brought their job resume with them? Or a pad of paper for notes? I'm not sure whether to bring them or not.

Still no word from G2D? I betcha she's out celebrating. I know my butt would be at the bar...

Now, Ellie, Penny, and anyone else who was part of the inspirational song talk (sorry, skimming because I have to leave for work soon). Get yourself a copy of these...

I have plenty of others which I can try to post before the wee hours (if you like); but at least it's a start towards gearing yourself up to SHINE! 😎

I interviewed today and honestly I didn't see anyone who did nor do I think you would need it! It was very casual... My interviewers were in jeans! I brought a water bottle and didn't even need it! Ill say this again... Just be YOU! No trick questions! Simple and to the point! 30 minutes fly by!

Goodluck everyone!! 🙂

Sorry for the delay! I ended up playing lots of phone tag today (since I can't get calls during the day) so I didn't know for sure that I was ACCEPTED until around lunch. And I can't (or at least shouldn't so I don't) get on SDN from work, and my cell phone doesn't work in my building, and blah, blah, blah. Sorry to keep you all in suspense!

I really can't believe that this is all coming true for me! I really, really, loved OSU, so depending on how the next few weeks play out, I could definitely see myself as a Buckeye!

Thanks for all your good thoughts and encouragement! This has been a wonderful point of light in an otherwise crappy week.

Fingers crossed for all those still interviewing and waiting!

Okay, I'm not even applying to Ohio and I've been waiting for you to post in that acceptance thread 😛. Way to go, G2D! I'm so glad your persistence has paid off 🙂

CONGRATS G2G!!!!😀.. you and jakesmom must be REALLY smart b/c they told us today that ppl that get calls before christmas are at the VERY HIGH end of the spectrum.. everyone else will hear mid-Jan

Everybody else (especially ellieG).. the interview was SO much better than I thought.. It was really relaxed and my interviewers were REALLY nice. We laughed most of the time.. and one of them totally called me out on my sweaty palms ahha 😱. Anyway I was sick the day before worrying, and I know it's hard to think, but its really not bad AT ALL. And OSU campus is great. I hope I get in!! :xf:

Also they are accepting 160 students this year.. and the additional 20 will be mostly for OOS students.

I feel like I might have met you during the lunch break! Someone told me about how she got called out about her sweaty hands and about other signs of stress!

:claps:Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so cool that we had the same interview time on the same day and we both got accepted!! I'm so happy for you!!!!! Maybe we'll be classmates in the fall (I still can't believe it!)!

Haha yup!!! I was the loud one sitting by tha stairs talking to the other guy from Florida and venting about how I wish I had a morning interview instead of my 3:15! 🙂 thanks for the tips and keeping my mind off of the interview! It went well I think! Nothing too amazing but I wouldn't say bad at all! Better than I expected!

I'm new to posting on here but since I submitted my application in September I've been following this thread. I love all your positive vibes and words of encouragement for each other.

I had my interview at OSU on 12/14 and was called by admissions two hours later offering me a spot! I'm really excited because OSU was the only school I applied to and it is the only school I want to attend. 🙂

Anyway, everything LMD posted above is true. The interview process this year is much more relaxed. I spoke to several interviewers before I had to do mine and they are actually required to ask specific questions this year that are designed to assess you as a student and you as a potential veterinarian, such as your study skills, how you handle stress, your knowledge of current zoonotic events. They are actually given a list of potential questions. I believe there are 12-20 of them but my interviewers maybe got through 5 of them. We went off on tangents about other topics. My interviewers were much the same as LoveMyDobies. They started out with jokes and we laughed most of the time. They just want you to be yourself. I was still a little nervous in the beginning but as the interview progressed, I kept thinking to myself, "Is this really happening right now? I'm actually having fun!" For those of you that still have to interview, I hope this helps!

Congrats G2G!! I knew it would be good news!

Congrats to everyone else who got accepted and good luck to those with interviews. I'm just getting more nervous by the second. Thank you for your kind words...it's SO hard to believe that in 14 hours it will be over! I'm just praying it will go well...I'm shaking this just typing this! Eeeee.

my advice to you.. get off SDN and drink a glass of wine. It will get your mind off everything so you can get a good night sleep! you will be GREAT!! I hope we can be classmates!

Congrats G2D!!! :highfive: I knew you were in!!! I hope you decide to join us at OSU!! You'll love it!

Congrats to you as well Evie1923!!! I can't wait till September!!!!

Good luck to everyone still having interviews this week and to those who already interviewed! :xf::luck:

Congrats on the acceptance!!! who were your interviewers??

I had Drs. Ana Hill and Jennifer Brandt. They were amazing and took non-traditional routes to veterinary medicine like me. Dr. Hill worked for a pet food company as a nutritionist and Dr. Brandt has a Ph.D in Social Work.

I interviewed with Dr. Hill!! She was great. I also interviewed with Dr. Welker.. he was great as well.. I don't think I could have had better interviewers!

You guys are lucky! Those are awesome interviewers to have! Dr. Hill especially is such a delightful woman. Dr. Welker is pretty cool too! He is the one who put on the interview workshop. When do you find out who your interviewers are? Is ti not until right before you go in the room?

The minute you find out is the minute you are walking up the stairs to your interview.

I didn't find out who my interviewers were until they called out my name. I had a heads up on mine only because Lalzi22 and I were talking beforehand about the interviewers and she was raving about how wonderful Dr. Inpanbutr was for anatomy and then 5 minutes later, she's standing next to Dr. Ballard as he calls out my name. Needless to say, it made me feel so much less nervous walking over to greet them!! Dr. Ballard mentioned as we were walking up the stairs that his wife was a late-comer to vet med like myself. She had taught English Literature prior to changing to vet med. That also put me a bit at ease since he has an idea of what I am/was going through. 😀

Thanks for the info guys!

I have a question that I totally should have asked earlier but I never thought much of it--if I have a morning interview, do I still have to show up at 8:30 or whenever it is that it starts? Or can I show up at like 9:00 for my 9:45 interview?

You can just show up before your interview... you don't have to be there all morning waiting! Just ask me and GRG😉!

I feel really terrible that I can't for the life of me remember the names of either of my interviewers😳. I'm sure they told me their names, but apparently it did not stick at all! I wold definitely recognize them if I saw them again (and one had a very unmistakable accent), but I really wish I knew their names! Maybe I'll find out in the fall...

The accent could be none other than Dr. Hoet =) Does that ring a bell? He works with the DVM/PHD program.

Is Dr. Hoet a food animal guy? The DVM/PhD doesn't ring a bell, nor does the name.... I may be a lost cause!

Yeah, he does food animal =) That might have been him. He's my roommate's best friend's dad. He's a really great guy! Must have thought you were pretty great too!

Excellent! Thanks! He was super nice! I guess I was even more stressed and nervous than I realized, given how little I remember from the whole affair!

I have a feeling that will be me. I want to remember who my interviewers are but if I don't I'm not stressing over it. If I spend the whole time worrying about remembering that I know I'll forget what I'm saying!
