Ohio Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's no specific computer needed. Some people have macs, some people pc's 🙂

I'm a Mac user. I don't find it to be a problem, but keep in mind that there are some limitations to having a Mac as opposed to a PC. For example, in histology, we have some glass slide sets on a program called Aperio that PC users can download for free (and therefore access those slides at home), but it isn't available for the Mac. That being said, we aren't tested on glass slides, and I've never felt the need to even open Aperio, but if you did for some reason have a burning urge, you could always use the PCs in the computer lab in VMAB. There was another instance of PC-only stuff, but I can't remember what it is, so obviously I'm not suffering.

So it turns out the reason I couldn't activate my account was because I use my Safari browser. All they have to do is put a little disclaimer up on the page that says: "Does not work with Safari or Chrome" and it would've saved me lots of hassles! So, note to self...don't try to use Safari on their websites.

If I don't get into Davis, then yes. You?

I can't say for sure yet. It depends on Davis and how I feel when I visit the other OOS schools I am interviewing at.

I have a spouse who will be moving with me wherever I go, and she wants to stay in CA, so even though I love everybody on this Ohio thread, I have to take other factors into consideration.

Hey y'all, I have a question. In the KSU thread Cartya said this:

I was forewarned from many people that OSU CVM has a bit of a stuck up nose. Being from Ohio (and being an OSU fan) I wasn't shocked.

Do you guys agree? Does it extend to CVM students or just applicants? On whose part, admin/profs, etc?

That actually really offends me. People at OSU, from the CVM or otherwise, have been nothing but wonderful and helpful to me.

Well that's why I'm asking for other opinions. I know I've been warned the same about Davis.

That's just silly. There is a lot of school spirit, but certainly not stuck up. It's not like we're Penn-wes. 😉

I moved to Ohio last September (I'm originally from Pennsylvania) and I've had an amazing experience at OSU. The help and support I received from OSU's MPH and CVM faculty and instructors is one of the reasons I wanted to become an Ohio resident and why OSU was the only vet school I applied to. My experience has actually been the opposite from Cartya, I was surprised how nice and friendly everyone was in Ohio as compared to some parts of the East Coast.

I've only had limited exposure to OSU, but everything I've experienced has been positive. I went to the open house last spring and got a really great vibe from everyone there; no sense of "stuck-up-ness" in any way. I also went to sit in on a meeting in Oct and had another tour of the campus. Again, nothing but wonderfully welcoming people. It seems to me that everyone involved with the CVM has a strong sense of pride in the program and I don't know if that gets interpreted the wrong way, i.e. seen as they are full of themselves. I know 4 vets that all went to OSU and they all have nothing but wonderful things to say about the program.

I definitely never got that impression. Coming from the east coast, I actually find that people here are ridiculously friendly and helpful. Yes, you will get attitude from OSU fans if you wear opposing team's gear on game day, ALTHOUGH I walked into the stadium for the Penn State game wearing Penn State gear and didn't get heckled at all. As for the students in the CVM, I haven't encountered anyone I'd call stuck up. There are going to be people you don't mesh with, but I wouldn't expect to get along with everyone at any school.

Ultimately, go by your own feeling.

Oh, and the other anti-Mac thing was browser incompatibility. Some of our professors posted videos that I couldn't view in Safari, so I had to use Firefox.

Cool, thanks guys for your responses about the attitude comment in the other thread. I certainly haven't had anything but a positive experience there myself.

EllieG did you go away? You can come back now, no one thinks OSU is stuck up!!!

*Peaks out from under covers*

Is it over?

I think that someone, somewhere, is going to say that about people from any school. There's always someone who will have that opinion based on one person they met 20 years ago who graduated from [school] and was a snotbag. Don't worry about it! And, if someone tells you the same thing about another school, take it with a grain of salt. 🙂

Yes, OSU football fans are.... well... (and I even include myself in this grouping) a bit extreme.... (no, I do not spit on people, burn couches, or flip cars.... but I have jumped in Mirror Lake, experienced kegs & eggs and know it is futile for me to study during M*ch*g*n weekend).

As for the faculty and staff... I've had nothing but positive experiences with the majority of them. I agree with tt that you will have a handful of snotty profs... but really, where won't you find that?

O-H!

(Side note: I had to come to Columbus today for a training.... I'm so excited to be able to drive past the VMAB and not make the "someday I'll be THERE!" statement.... but change the statement to "September 22 I'll be THERE!" Even though it's snowy and roads are poo, I'm so excited to be back in C-bus-- first time back since being accepted)

I know exactly what you mean penny! I'm heading down on Friday to begin my housing search and am so excited to be able to look at the campus and say "this is my new home!"

Innocent ploy- have 3 bedroom house.... will be looking for roomies.... 🙂 pm me for info....

Eeee I know this feeling too! I get it every morning when I'm on the bus to class and I pass the vet school 😍

Hey guys, just chiming in to say hope you all are getting pumped!

I passed my first quarter (hurray!) and have come back for more. Hope you all enjoyed the now-that-you-got-accepted stress free holidays!

BTW- my friends and I ROUTINELY still have those moments, and we have been here for 3 months already. Sometimes I sit in class daydreaming, I mean diligently taking notes, and realize "Holy s***, I'm in vet school!" Or when I'm walking through the hospital....😍

I appreciate the offer penny, but I'm going to have to pass. I'm sure you would make a wonderful roomie, but I'm willing to admit that I probably won't make a wonderful roomie. I'm too darn old and too darn grumpy about how I like things. I've had roommates most of my adult life and I'm just not willing to go there again. I know it'll wind up costing me much more, but this way I won't have to worry about little things like if I leave out my stuff or didn't my dishes or where in god's green earth did someone put the flippin' remote?! I hope you find some good roomies for your house!!

I am not offended. Figured I'd throw it out there...

hey guys,
i've been trolling some real estate websites and--does anyone know the best places to live around osu? i'm oos so i'm completely clueless 😕

Has anyone else on here NOT received their official letter of acceptance in the mail after getting an email before Christmas?

I called them and they reassured me that I was accepted but still no letter! 🙁

I'm attending the Off-Campus housing fair tomorrow down at OSU, so I'll let know what I find out. To me, it seems like if you are looking for something more geared towards the undergrad students, there are lots of apts & such to look at which have leases you can sign now for the fall. If you're like me and am looking for something geared towards non-students, you may have to wait to find something that has a lease that will begin in the fall, as these properties aren't for rent yet. In the OSU acceptances thread from last year there is a pretty lengthy conversation regarding housing if you'd like to see what last year's people said.

Soooo...this thread was on the second page for the first time in like, months, and I found that unacceptable =)

Has anyone filled out that scholarship application?

"Last reported gpa in vet school" Um, n/a?

Organizations section: this part is seriously blank for me!

- I'm not active in any veterinary organizations, heck my school didn't even have a pre-vet club.

- As far as non-veterinary organizations, would outreach I do for The Marine Mammal Center count?

List elective/independent study topics....: In undergrad???

I'm assuming this is used for students of all years in the program, so not all of it applies to us newbies.

👍

And Squibby, I'm planning on doing that scholarship app this weekend...I think I'm going to email the school and see about the GPA thing and stuff...

i called and asked and they said anything pertaining to vet school (i.e GPA) just leave blank

Thanks LMD, and yeah, let me know what they say EllieG.

I just had my first dream/nightmare about being in vet school. We had a "welcome dance" and for some reason I found myself on the dance floor dancing without a shirt or bra on.

I'm not looking forward to months more of dreams like this.

That's just in keeping with your exhibitionist nature. Is there a problem with that? 😉

So, I see they want us to email/fax this thing to them. I don't have access to a fax. How do we email it? It doesn't appear to be setup so that we can fill the form in on the screen. Pasting it into an email, or copying it into Word and then attaching as a file, both seem very cumbersome since typing anything into the form screws up the format.

Help for the computer illiterate?

Can't I just snail mail the damned thing?

There is a pdf file on this page: http://vet.osu.edu/education/incoming-class#scholarship

I wasn't able to type right into it, so under "File" I selected "save as text" (don't know if this is an option on PC, I have a mac). It created a .txt file that I could type into, and would print in a reasonably similar format as the original .pdf version. Edit: I mean maybe you could email it in that format, or copy and paste it into word, and it would print reasonably similar on their end if they needed to. That all seems like too much trouble though, I would just call.

I would call on Monday and I would be that you could just mail it in.

Well I had JUST met everyone, so I was a bit self-conscious. After the song ended I sat down on one of the folding chairs lining the wall and said to the girl next to me: "I usually wear a shirt."

The only thing I like to show off in real life are my calf muscles and my moonwalk. I guess I also like to show off how cute my dog is.

If anyone is looking for a place now, here are some websites for off-campus housing. Most of these properties seem to be in the areas of campus where the undergrad kids live. After talking to several people at the Off-Campus Housing Fair, I've put my housing search on hold until April/May, because there are few properties that fit what I'm looking for that are available now.

http://www.foxandhoundsapts.com/ They said they don't have size restrictions on dogs, but rather breed restrictions. When the lady said that they don't allow Pitties, German Shepherds, Rotties, Dobermans, Chows (and maybe one or 2 more breeds) I said that wasn't going to work for me as I have a Chow/Lab mix and a Shepherd/Dobie mix. Oh, well, I want a house anyways😀

Thanks for the info! I really want to find a place that has a washer/dryer or washer/dryer hookup at least. I've been spoiled the last few years and don't think I could go back. To columbus area people, is this easy to find?

Also, how fast does good housing go for the fall?

Damn. I'm in the same boat as you, Jakesmom. But I was hoping I could fly out for Spring break in March and find a house to rent. My lease here is up May 31st, so I was planning to move in May. Do you think it wouldn't be worth it for me to look in March (for a May availability)?

This is the main reason I haven't committed to Ohio State yet. I can't attend if I can't find a decent house to rent.

LSD, I think you would be fine looking for a place in March for a May move. I think because Columbus is such a large area, with so many places to live entirely unrelated to the school, that finding a place to move to shouldn't be too hard. I've been watching Craigslist for rentals that are available now and I would probably be pretty interested in some of them if I was moving now. They seem to list properties as they become available, so I'd be keeping an eye there to see what comes up. One woman I spoke with said that many of the graduate-type students live in Victorian Village/Harrison West (which I like both these areas) and these properties are often rented out by the owner and won't be listed until the current renter gives their 60-day notice.

Yeah... not totally unreasonable timeline.

From those listed, I have known people to have rented from fox and hound and not had issues.

A lot of my classmates (myself included) live in the area where Fox and Hounds is (north of campus, sort of near Dublin). There are a few places you could check out (Olentangy Commons, Governour's Square).

Keep in mind that while many places report having breed restrictions, there is wiggle room. It really depends on who you talk to, and if possible, I definitely think those conversations are better had in person than over a phone or via e-mail. I know people who have pit bulls here. My neighbors have both a pit mix and a rottie, so it's definitely possible.

(Also, you don't necessarily have to tell the leasing office. That can cause problems later on, but just saying...)

hope i can find a place to live with my dobies.. they are very nice dogs but my male can be a little intimidating.

although I would love to find a houseeeeeeeee with some land.

👍👍 I currently live in a house with 25 acres of wooded area behind us that the dogs get to run and play in. We have deer and creeks and a pond. My kids will not do well in apartment living.

awesome

Yeah I haven't lived in an apartment in ten years, and am not looking forward to maybe having to live in one again. My dog would definitely not dig that.

[FONT=Calibri,sans-serif][FONT=Eras Medium ITC,sans-serif]Hello EllieG,..
[FONT=Calibri,sans-serif][FONT=Eras Medium ITC,sans-serif]First I want to apologize for the e-mail I sent that had the dreaded e-word in it. I won’t even repeat it. ..

......

Haha. I cracked up when I saw that she opened this new email with that greeting. There must have been a universal freak-out when 'error' appeared in the previous message =)

Y'know, it's a minor thing in the grand scheme of things, but I am impressed that Sara addressed the emails individually to each one of us (including the individualized greeting at the beginning). She could have just sent out a generic blanket email to all of us. Just another of the little things that has so impressed me about Ohio. Very student-focused. Unlike other schools to which I applied.
