Hi. Thought I would start this. How's everyone doing on the supplemental?

Anyone else working on the essay questions?

I definitely waited until the last minute to do them last year. They totally sucked too haha....i'd suggest working hard on them! Most of all...prepare for their interview if you get one. By FARRRR the worst one I had. It was complete misery compared to my other 3

Where is everybody? Anyone other than me and twelvtigers applying to Ohio State?

Essay number 5 is playing mind games with me. I need some camaraderie.

I NEVER thought I'd do it, because I am so sick of Ohio, but I'm applying to OSU. Just decided today after making sure calc was ok. Count me in as "in denial" about the supplemental. I have this Saturday off, and I'm planning on sitting my ass down in the coffee shop and working on supps until I have to go horse show.

Blarrrrrg.

I am applying to OSU too. But, I am in denial as well. I haven't even started any of the supplementals. I have signed up to take the GRE on September 1st. I hope the scores come back in time. :scared: That is the only thing I am really worried about right now. I have the night off tonight so I am going to try to fill out all the supplementals and all of VMCAS besides the personal statement (which I still haven't started). I am so far behind this year, oh well it will all work out.

Currently on the fence... Waiting to speak with someone from the professional admissions office regarding some of my prereq courses. I wasn't planning on applying, but had a colleague suggest I talk to them to see what they thought of my professional experience counting towards my OLD grades. Will know more next week, but sounds like I should get started on things ASAP just in case. Yikes!

So I'm finally (oof) starting on the supplemental for OSU, and on the FIRST QUESTION I am about to have a panic attack. "What animals are you proficient in handling, and what animal handling procedures have you performed?" Easy, right?

I've been working with horses since I was 8 years old. I've worked in about 8 barns, run an equestrian program, taught lessons in riding and horsemanship, volunteered at handicapped riding centers, trained babies, and owned horses. Not to even get into my veterinary experience. How the hell am I supposed to cover all the "handling procedures" here? Mostly I'm laughing about it, because if I listed everything I've ever done with a horse it'd be about 8 pages long. But what's important? *tears hair out*

OMG! I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the fact that I left my browser open when I left my building and came back to this. WEN55 - I think my hair may fall out on its own without the benefit of pulling. Thanks for the warning and you have my sympathies! I don't know I could present the last 13 years of my life much less having to go back to when I was 8! I guess your best bet is to put down the stuff that you've done without supervision and/or taught. However, I fear that would be everything in your case! Time for a call to the admissions office??

My current strategy is "eff it, they're getting everything!" Including that I taught my deaf cat to walk on a leash and sit on command.

Hey, they asked for it! I'll parse things down later. It's just going to be hilarious for now.

Huh, that's a new one. The two year's previous they kept the questions basically identical. Plus that seems like sort of a silly question to include in the essay section...seems that information would be more easily obtained from interview/application.

Chordy, I suppose (and others have thought) that it is meant to weed out people with no real hands-on experience handling animals. It's easy to say you've observed milking or bovine surgeries, etc, but you've never actually been up close and personal with 1200lbs of dairy cow.

I agree with you though - it seems like the sort of thing you'd better be able to assess by talking to me in person.

I don't like this question 🙁

I only shadow and cannot perform procedures for liability reasons. Seems like an unfair question (makes me feel like crud because I don't know how to do anything).

Yeah, I remember reading Ohio State's supplemental questions the first time and wanting to scream. "Discuss a time when you had to solve a problem in a group. What did you do? What did you learn?" CAN WE VAGUE THAT UP A LITTLE PLEASE?

Good luck, guys!

nitheninny, the similar one this year is about a time when you demonstrated integrity and a time when you didn't. WHAT THE HELL. :bang:

yeah they had the integrity one last year too...which was definitely a pain to write about. do you guys still have the 5 essays to write? or did they up the number?

Yup, it's still 5. So many essays to write for my supps, ugh!

Touche! LOVE your idea and attitude ta-boot! While I was doing my rounds I gave thought as to how to answer this one... The issues I've had in the past include the fact that there's a character limit - I'm a victim of bullets and, my personal favorite - the dreaded semi colon. Perhaps Ohio State is my chance to go to town. This ought to be fun!! No deaf cat though. Only taught mine to sit and roll over. Bummer...
Hey! They've got a dancing monkey icon - sweet!:zip:

Yeah, that first question is bugging me. So I'm typing "trimmed nails, flushed ears, groomed" and then I realize I did all of those things as a tech, so should I not list them here? Where do I draw the line between owner and tech?

My favorite is teaching my rat to walk on leash... picture a tiny little harness.

Should I also put "rode on my shoulder everywhere with me" ?

This is silly.

That's when I took mine last year. IIRC all the schools got mine on time.

What all are the questions this year? I don't remember them being too too bad last year but there were some tough ones (in a 500 character limit to boot, IIRC).

Yup, it's still 5. So many essays to write for my supps, ugh!
Are you applying to Western? 😀 They have 11.

ELEVEN?!?!!:wow: No thanks, I'll pass! 😉

OSU's this year are the aforementioned "list animal handling etc." and:

  • List up to five non-biomedical challenges faced by today's veterinarian. (For example, achieving work-life balance, rates of suicide in the profession, the economy, etc.) Select ONE obstacle or challenge from your list that is most pertinent to you and provide a specific, succinct plan for how you would address it. Briefly discuss the consequences you may need to be prepared for as a result of your plan.
  • .Discuss how human medicine and animal medicine intersect to serve society. Please be specific..
  • .D. *.escribe a time when you demonstrated integrity. Describe a time when you failed to demonstrate integrity. Please be specific..
  • .In rank order (where 1 = most important, 2 = next most important, etc.) list the five non-technical (cognitive and emotional intelligence) skills you believe to be most important for achieving overall success in the veterinary profession. Of the five skills you listed, which skill is currently your greatest strength? Please provide a brief description of how you have successfully applied this skill in your personal or professional life. Of the five skills you listed, which skill represents the greatest challenge to you? Briefly describe your plan to overcome this challenge. Please be specific.

Wow, those are hard ones this year....😱. The thing I hated about OSU's questions was how much time they took, and the whole time I was writing, I was freaking out thinking about how I was probably messing it up!

eww, yeah those questions are infinitely worse...mainly the two involving lists.

good luck guys!

The good news is they gave you three out of the five already. 😛 The bad news is you still have to do the last part

Not too bad. Any zoonosis should do.

Seriously, **** this question. I used to hate it. I still do, but I used to too.

Uhm....yah...have fun!

So on the questions when it says "list", does that mean we have a bullet point list and then answer the question? Or are we supposed to write it out?

For example in the first question it says "Equine: applied halter". Are we supposed to do it like that?

I'm just listing everything.

ok cool. I hate words like that because you're bound to think you should actually list it, but then sometimes they really just want you to write it out.

I'm applying to OSU, too, and haven't even started the supplementals! Yikes! I'm so not looking forward to this.

Wow those are harder than last year. And I thought last year's sucked!! Just a little note- when I did my interview they brought up my essays. They said they put a lot of weight on these essay questions and I believe that this was def one of the reasons I got in.

Just remember as you write these terribly long and tedious essays that they can def help boost your chances of getting in. Any questions please feel free to PM me 🙂 Good luck!!!

I don't think they even mentioned my essays in my interview.

I'm applying to Ohio State this year. I'm also one of the slackers-I plan on finishing my Personal Statement tomorrow, then getting my Explanation Statement done and revising and finalizing my Personal Statement by next Wednesday so I can submit the VMCAS and get working on the Supplemental. Not to mention staying on my two (admittedly absent-minded) veterinarians about their eLORs. Thanks for posting the questions though, so I can start to work them out in my head. They do seem rather daunting. Is there a character/word limit? That would make it even worse!

And away we go... Count me in on the insanity! I think I may be out of my mind... :d

Got my supp started and the essays really don't look too too bad to me; but I'm a veteran of the Cornell process. Thus, my opinion may not bear too much weight here. However, I can say that the 500 word limit is going to be an issue more me on a couple of them.

Good luck to all!!

I don't mind that their supplemental questions suck. I agree they do, but I like having a chance to personalize the application - it's better than just hoping I meet their definition of "a competitive applicant" :scared:

I'm stuck on just how much to list on the animal handling, like a lot of you are saying.

I'm a horse person - of course I have tons of equine handling - so that's endless. But what the heck do you even list with feline and canine after nail trims, grooming, and restraint for various procedures? There's not much else you CAN do hands-on. I have a ball python - I wanted to put that I have some reptilian handling from that, just because it's different, but it's nothing specific..just, 'handling'....so is it even worth mentioning?

Can I put my cat sat on my lap and I pet her while filling out applications?

Definitely include the python. It sets you apart from the many people who have no reptile experience.

You should definitely mention the python, like LivestockDoc said it will set you apart from the many who have little to none experience with reptiles...plus pythons are SWEEEET!😀
