Hi,

I was wondering if anybody has interviewed at OHSU?

Also, has anybody been accepted to OHSU?

If anybody has interviewed at OHSU, what is the interview like? Is it informal or formal? What type of questions are asked (hypotheticals, ethical)?

Any help would be much appreciated?

Thanks
😀

a friend of mine inteviewd ther a few years ago and got in, and thats where he ended up going. it ia great school, good luck to you.

from what i have heard, the interviews are inofrmal and relaxed... nothing too different from any other onterviews.. the only weird questions that he was asked was "if you could be a car, what would you be and why?" (answer: you want to say that you are strong and reliable)... such questions are usually asked at job interviews to just get to know your views of yourself and what you want to be!!

good luck again...

I really appreciate the info. However, from what I have heard at my interviews, everybody has been telling me that they are really bad. I hope you are right.

Thanks for the info.

If anybody else has heard anything please post 😀

Has anybody else heard anything about OHSU as a dental school and anything about their interview process.

Thanks

I am a current dental student at OHSU. The interview I had here was by far my easiest. It was very casual and I was asked a lot of off-the-wall questions. There are some faculty here that are certainly a lot tougher to interview with that others, but as a whole, OHSU made the process of applying and interviewing very simple. This is a great school. Good luck with your interviews.

Hi Green Fox,

I was wondering how you like OHSU as a dental school. What aspects do you think are positive about the school and what aspects are negative?

In retrospect would still attend OHSU or would you have attended another school?

Do you mind me asking which year you are in?

Thanks,

I am a first year student and I really love it here at OHSU and don't regret my decision to attend here at all. The atmosphere is very friendly. Faculty is great...very helpful. Upperclassmen are very good about showing you the ropes. We get extensive test files, and our class is great about distributing papers, etc that would be helpful in clinic and in exams. The environment here is not cutthroat like a lot of other schools. The faculty has stated to us more than once that the student body is much like a family and they, for the most part, treat us as such. The freshman simulation lab clinic was just completed this year and is a million dollar project with state of the art equiptment. Negatives: Every school has them but I can't think of any that would be limited to OHSU. There is A LOT of course work and studying to be done. But you are going to find that anywhere. Plus, OHSU doesn't have a lab staff so you will have to do all your own lab work for all of your patients throughout school. It requires a lot of extra work, but you graduate with extensive lab knowledge that you wouldn't obtain at a school that lets you send out your lab work, like crowns, etc. Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Do you even do all your own dentures and porcelin crowns.

As far as I understand it, we are responsible for ALL of our own lab work

Hi Green Fox,

I had a few other question. How do you find the courseload? How many clinical/pre-clinical hours do you do for the first two years? How man hours do you spend in class and lab a day? Also, what is the grading system used? And anything else you think i should know about the school would be great

Thanks😀

To answer a few of your questions:
1) The courseload is pretty intense, but I am sure you will find it that way no matter which school you attend. The information you are covering in each class isn't necessarily difficult to learn, there is just quite a bit of it so you really need to be able to prioritize your time and use good study habits.
2)As far as clinical time goes, you see your first "patients" during the first quarter of your first year...they bring in local elementary school kids and you do exams on them. We have at least one clinical class per quarter during our first year, including a periodontology class where you learn to clean teeth...you are required to do prophylaxis during your second year. You start having your own "real" patients during your third year, but prior to that, you recieve a lot of clinical practice and experience. They have us work on each other quite a bit-giving exams, cleaning teeth, etc. We also start in the lab during the first quarter doing fixed pros and waxing...these classes meet twice per week (three hours per day) and continue throughout the first year.
3)The grading system at OHSU consists of letter grades. There are occsional classes that are pass/fail, but these tend to be fairly easy classes and are usually one credit.

I have nothing but great things to say about the school so far. Everything has run really smooth and the faculty have helped make the transition to dental school relativly easy.

If anybody has interviewed at OHSU, what is the interview like? Is it informal or formal? What type of questions are asked (hypotheticals, ethical)?

I actually just interviewed today. Very relaxed. There actually was only one other interviewee there. My interview was in the afternoon so I spent the morning in the clinic observing, wich was followed withlunch with a 3rd year then two seperate one on one interview. For all the 3rd years I talked with it depends a lot on who your two interviews are with. Mine was very layed back the first talked more than I did then the second was more questions about what I thought someone else would say about me.

The only thing that threw me off was first thing in the morning they have you hand write an essay. I get the impression that the question changes but my question was: If you could have lunch with anyone (real or fictional, alive or dead) who would it be and why?

Hope this helps 🙂
